Harbour Guide 2015 - No Stress Yachting
Harbour Guide To give you a few personal tips on planning your route, we have created this guide on some of the best places to eat, sleep and sail. Please contact us with any questions or suggestions for the guide. This guide should not be used as a navigational aide, please use the charts provided as well as Rod Heikell’s Ionian Guide Book. We love sailing in the Ionian but we realise it can be a busy area and one where local knowledge can make the holiday a whole lot less stressful! The guide starts from the North and works its way South. Unfortunately we can not mention every single great bay or picturesque harbour as that guide would not fit in your chart table. So we have tried to mention all of our favourites including some of the smaller bays that will keep you off the beaten flotilla track! In the top of each section for the main harbour there is a NO STRESS RATING. These are a quick guide to the harbours facilities and are there as a rough guide, please don’t quote this if you have a bad time mooring, it may be a one off! The guide works like this: :) = Average :) :) = Good :) :) :) = Excellent Water and Electric is simply Yes or No NO STRESS RATING MOORING SWIMMING SHOPPING dining bars NOISE water electrics :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) Y N E.G. the example on the right shows the mooring could be busy or a little tricky, but there are great shopping, dinning and bar facilities. There is water but no electric hook ups here. So good on quiet days but if you want a quite night, try the next harbour. For the busy harbours we will try to give you different options should you not get in or you want a quiet night onboard. In some harbours, we have recommended tavernas and bars, do not feel like you have to go to these, they are just for those who can’t make decisions! We recommend looking around at all the menus first before dinner to find the best meal for YOU! We hope you find this guide useful and appreciate any feedback and personal views/ recommendations for anywhere that caught your eye are always welcome! A Few Bits of Greek! In Greece we have very minimal tides, created by a change in atmospheric pressure. Therefore we can moor using different methods to the normal. The following section is to help you understand a few of the techniques, of course let us know if you would like a demo or some friendly advise! Free-Swinging Anchoring This is the most simple and some say peaceful way of mooring. All you have to do is drop your bow anchor, providing: • You have at least 4 x the depth of the water in chain out. • You have the room to swing around in a full circle around the anchor chain • The area you have dropped anchor in has good holding, i.e. sand or mud. You have to be aware of weedy areas as they can sometimes let your anchor slip. ! Side-To Mooring This is the type of mooring most people are familiar with from the UK. It isn’t very common in Greece as there are no tides to fight and room on the quay is a precious thing in August. However there are places like Frikes in the South Ionian where this is the best way to moor. • You will need most of your fenders on the side facing the quay at the same level as the quay. • You will need a bow line, stern line, bow spring and stern spring. • Don’t be afraid when people moor alongside you, as long as they have fenders out and walk around the bow of you boat, it is a sociable way to moor. Copyright - Sam Peters 2014 Stern-To Mooring Everyone panics about this part of sailing in Greece, here are a few tips for keeping it Stress free! The first point (which makes the whole thing a piece of cake) is preparation: 1. Make sure your crew knows what you are going to do, where you are aiming for and what they have to do. 2. You will need the bow anchor ready (which means hanging over the bow, not still tied on!). 3. You will need two stern lines ready (which means two lines TIED on to the cleats, ready to go ashore, not tangled in your guard wires or still in the locker!). 4. You will also need your fenders out, on both sides and on the transom (don’t use your hands or feet, we are better at boat building than surgery!) Here is a picture of the ideal stern-to mooring. This is what you have to picture in your head as you are lining yourself up. • The aim of the game is to get your anchor about 2 to 3 boat lengths out and chain in a straight line in the middle of where you want to be on the quay. The best way to do this is with a long run up. Don’t be afraid to start reversing from well out of the harbour. It gives you more time to think about everything, a better flow of water over the rudder giving you better steerage and it means you can get that perfect straight line. • The person on the windlass also needs to be on the ball, they have to let enough chain out to keep you going backwards but they also have to keep it tight enough so there is no slack that can come loose later. ! Copyright - Sam Peters 2014 ! • The best place to stand when you are in reverse on the helm is forward of the wheel facing backwards. On most new yachts this means you can steer like a car exactly where you want to go. • In general it is normally best to go fairly slowly into a berth, it means you have more time to correct steering and think about what is going on. However if there is a lot of wind on the beam you may need to give it more power to keep steerage and stop yourself drifting. This is fine as long as you are ready to stop the anchor and possibly a quick burst of forward to stop the yacht. The last and most important point: DO NOT PANIC! As long as you are going slow, you have fenders out and everyone is awake it will be fine! Bows-to Mooring This type of mooring is great if you are not sure of the depth of water next to the quay (or where ever you are mooring), as this means your keel can sit further out in deeper water. It also means you can swim off the back! As you may have guessed, it is very much the same as stern-to tactics, just a few differences: • If you haven’t been on the boat before it may be hard to see the bow and tell how close you are to the quay. This is where hand signals and various communication methods come in. Whoever is on the bow with the (tied on, non-tangled) shore lines can tell you in words or fingers how far from the quay you are. • Again preparation is important with this mooring. Have the kedge anchor out on the transom/swim platform. Have the chain and warp ready to go, not tangled or tied up still. Most importantly have the end of the warp TIED ON, with a bowline or OXO onto a stern cleat. • You will drop the anchor the same as the bow anchor, 2 to 3 boat lengths out. Just be sure not to have your feet around the warp when you throw it. Once the bow lines have been tied on you can pull tight the anchor warp. Bowline Copyright - Sam Peters 2014 OXO Long Lines Ashore This is the exact same set up as going stern-to just with long lines attached to shore instead of a quay. ! There are a number of ways and orders to do it in: • The best way we have found is if you can drop someone off in a dinghy with the shore lines to tie a bowline around a rock, tree or lamppost. Once they have tied on, you reverse towards them, drop the anchor as normal and they meet you in deep and safe water with the lines. This means everyone can do their job in their own time with no rush or stress. • If you are doing this short-handed say with two on board, if the wind and conditions allow then there is another option. Drop the anchor with both of you on board as if you were free swinging. Then get in the dinghy and tie a really long line to shore, you can then pull yourself into position. • One method that we have seen which can be very difficult is: you reverse towards the rocks, drop the anchor as normal then someone takes a line to shore that is still attached to the boat. This way can be perfectly fine and go to plan, but if it takes the shore team a while to tie up then it can become hard to keep the yacht in place while they are trying to tie up. I don’t know if you have tried but tying a bowline with a 12 ton boat blowing in the wind attached isn’t the easiest. • Remember, the wider the shore lines the less the yacht will swing, so if you are in a tight spot, take your shore lines wide. Copyright - Sam Peters 2014 The North Ionian KASSIOPI ST STEPHANOS AGNI GOUVIA CORFU TOWN SAGIADA PLATARIA PETRITI SIVOTA MOURTOS PARGA PAXOS TWO ROCK BAY ANTI PAXOS VONITSA PREVEZA Corfu The perfect place to start your sailing adventure. Our base is in Gouvia, about half way up the East coast. From here you can head North to Kassiopi and to some outstandingly beautiful bays or South towards Paxos and Lefkas or across to Mainland Greece where there are historical towns and great spots to explore. The whole of the East coast is full of bays and harbours to moor in and if you fancy a trip on scooters or a hire car then the West coast’s rugged coast line has some magical views to find. Copyright - Sam Peters 2014 Gouvia A natural harbour that has been turned into a large marina with extensive facilities. We are based right on the end of the A pontoon, ( )where we have shore power, water and nearby shower blocks. As well as many cafes, bars and restaurants. When you leave the Marina on the 1st day you must stick to the channel inside the marks on the way out to avoid the shallow patches. The channel is clearly marked with two sets of port and starboard markers. Keep green to port, red to starboard on the way out! NO STRESS RATING MOORING SWIMMING SHOPPING dining bars NOISE water electrics :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) Y Y Before you return on the last day, there is good anchorage in Kontokoli Bay ( ) to anchor in just to the north of the harbour entrance. This is a great place to pack your bags and have that last swim, maximising your time with No Stress and keeping your refreshed before you fly. All the berths in the marina have what they call lazy lines. This is a fake anchor. When you are coming back in all you need to do is have two stern lines ready and we will give you the lazy line to walk forward. This means taking the thin line (that runs forward a fixing in the marina and aft to the quay), you can then walk towards the bow dropping the thin line back into the water, until you reach the thicker line on the end. When you reach this thick line and the stern is tied off you can then tighten this thick line and tie it off on a bow cleat, like it was your anchor. There are some great places to eat in Gouvia or you can get a cab into Corfu Town to explore the stunning old town. Some of our favourite places in Gouvia to eat are The Hotel Telisilla, for the traditional home cooked lamb, Harry’s for the great Greek live music and Zorbas if you are hungry! These are all very close to the Marina, just turn left at the end of the main entrance. The Marina also has a good selection of tavernas which do good sea food and traditional meals for a reasonable price. Copyright - Sam Peters 2014 Heading North to the Bays ST STEPHANOS If you head North East from Gouvia the first bay to stop at is Ormos Agni. (Ormos meaning Bay) KOULOURA KALAMI AGNI NO STRESS RATING There is a good taverna here on the South side of the bay and you can anchor in either the Southern or the Northern ends of the bay in sand/mud. It is possible to take a long line to shore in the Northern side to keep your bow into the passing big ferry wake. There are jetties outside the tavernas but these can get uncomfortable in the ferry wake. MOORING SWIMMING SHOPPING dining bars NOISE water electrics :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) N N :) :) Ormos Kalami is a bit more spacious and easier to anchor in but not as tranquil as the other two, however for an easy spot to stop for lunch on board it is perfect. Sand and weed makes it ok holding but make sure the anchor is well dug in. There are tavernas ashore but not quite as picturesque as the other two. Ormos Kouloura is another tranquil bay with a nice taverna ashore. Don’t attempt to get into the harbour as it is very shallow. You can anchor to the West of the harbour with a line to shore or free swinging slightly deeper out in the bay. Copyright - Sam Peters 2014 Ay Stefanos Ay Stefanos is a great place to stop for lunch or spend the night. It has a sandy/weed bottom so you need to make sure your anchor is well dug in if you are free swinging in around 4- 8m of water. The best place, providing there is enough space is right in the harbour almost level with the break water on the left side. NO STRESS RATING MOORING SWIMMING SHOPPING dining bars NOISE water electrics :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) N N :) :) :) There are many great tavernas here. Generally the staff will come to their jetties to help you out of the dingy and are always willing to help in any way. There are also two small supermarkets here for provisions with a fairly good range. Important Notes When sailing in this area it is important to use the charts provided to stay clear of the two reefs around the North East corner, Nisis Peristerai (x) and Ifalos Serpa (X). They are both marked with markers, but if in doubt give them a wide berth. Pages 52-53 of Rod Heikell’s Ionian goes into more detail. x GALIATES When heading North the Eastly Cardinal Marker and rocks (X) should stay on your port side. Do not go between this and Corfu. As you go further round the corner you will see the other reef. You can easily go between Corfu and this visible rock. Just give it a wide berth as there are unseen rocks surrounding the one with the light house on. X ST STEPHNOS As you go round the corner there are more tranquil bays (red and yellow stars) you can stop at for lunch or overnight, providing the weather is fine and there are no big winds forecast. A good tip is to enter the bay aiming for the middle, then you will stay away for any rocks that may stick out either side of the bay. Ormos Galiates is a great anchorage with a lovely taverna just off the beach. But do not anchor here if any strong wind from the North is forecast. Copyright - Sam Peters 2014 Sam’s Bay Ormos Arrilas As you may have guessed this is one of our favourite spots. It is definitely one of the nicest secluded bays in the North Ionian. Even in mid summer it is not generally too busy. NO STRESS RATING MOORING :) :) :) The best way to anchor in here is using a long line ashore. The easiest way is SWIMMING :) :) :) to drop someone off in the dinghy who can go in and tie a bowline around one SHOPPING of the big trees on the left side of the bay, for the other longline you can tie onto dining bars the small metal framed quay in the centre of the bay. Then simply reverse from NOISE :) :) :) the centre of the bay dropping water N the anchor in around 10m at 4 electrics N boat lengths from the shore. When you are around a boat length off the shore in around 3-5m of water you can tie off the long lines and tighten your anchor. You can the relax and swim in some of the clearest waters in Greece! The reason for having a line ashore is to keep your bow pointed right out into the ferry swell that will occur as the big fast ferries speed around the corner. There is no bar or taverna ashore here which makes it a nice quiet night onboard. It does mean you will have to cook onboard, but it is truly worth it when you finish dinner and look up at the stars. The No Stress Mooring Bouy Ormos Imerolia Just to the West of Kassiopi is Imerolia Bay. Here there is a beautiful bay with a nice beach and clear waters. KASSIOPI NO STRESS RATING MOORING SWIMMING SHOPPING dining bars NOISE water electrics :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) N N :) :) :) :) :) :) This year we have put in a permanent mooring buoy, tucked in behind the outcrop of rock to your port as you come in. This means there is now a sheltered position to stay near Kassiopi. In summer it can become very busy and the harbour can be difficult to find a good mooring, therefore this mooring should give our guests more options. It is also a lot quieter in this bay for a peaceful night. From this mooring, if conditions are fair then you can dinghy ashore to the beach, where the centre of town is only a short walk around the coastal path/road or along the road. The only problem is that some one may have already taken our buoy, even though it is clearly marked as private. We hope this will not be the case! If so there should be enough space to anchor in front to the beach. Copyright - Sam Peters 2014 Kassiopi Kassiopi is probably the most Northern harbour recommended for yachts to stay in. It is one of the most picturesque villages on Corfu with breath taking views from our Villa ‘The Eagles Rest’, and great choice of fantastic tavernas around the water front. It can be hard to spot from a distance, but as you get closer you will see the villas/houses on the hills. NO STRESS RATING MOORING SWIMMING SHOPPING dining bars NOISE water electrics :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) Y/N N Inside the harbour you can moor bows-to on the East side and the North side. It is possible to go stern-to however only in some spots as there are large rocks which take no prisoners when it comes to rudders. The bottom is weed so is generally poor holding, therefore you need a lot of anchor chain out. However be aware of other anchors that may be out, especially the day trip boats. In some spots you may find a lazy line which you can use as a backup for your anchor. There are some great places to eat and drink here, many just a stone’s throw from your boat. There is also a supermarket just back from the quay, where you can get supplies and inquire about going scuba diving (PADI) off the beach around the corner. The old Venetian Castle is free to explore. A nice little walk around the headland to the West takes you to some great little beaches and views. You can also get water on the North quay if you ask nicely at the Wave Bar ( great cocktails and breakfasts). ) (which also does Kassiopi can be busy in the height of summer with flotillas and cruisers, therefore you should always have a backup plan, e.g to head back round to Ag. Stefanos or a nearby bay like Sam’s Bay or our new mooring buoy. It can also be uncomfortable in a strong wind from the North as the swell does bounce you around in the harbour. But if conditions are good, it is a brilliant and beautiful spot to explore, definitely worth a look! Albania DO NOT GO THERE UNLESS AUTHORISED! Albania is now open to visit, however port authorities need to be notified from Greece prior to the visit and a special permit is required. Therefore if you do wish to go explore please let us know before you come out so we can make the necessary arrangements. Copyright - Sam Peters 2014 Corfu Town There are a few places to moor here; you can go into one of the yacht club marinas. POIATH (1) on the North Side, however it is usually full in summer, you will also be charged around 20-30 Euros. NAOK (2) on the Southern side of the castle, sometimes has more room, you will also have to pay here as well. Both have showers, great restaurants and easy access to Corfu town. 1 2 3 The other option is to NO STRESS RATING free swing in the MOORING :) :) harbour to the SWIMMING :) :) SHOPPING :) South of the castle dining :) :) (3). The other option is to moor in the new town quay, which is a new addition last year. This is located on the North side just after the commercial dock, directly under a church spire. Unfortunately the builders put a sewage drain inside the harbour so it does not smell great. However it is free and is a great place to quickly tie up stern to or side to, and go ashore for the afternoon shopping in town. Corfu town is full of places to eat and drink, there are many back streets to explore with some great traditional tavernas hiding away, so don’t always go for the first place you see. You can explore the castle for a small entrance fee. There are also museums, art galleries and many craft shops to visit. Or if you want to get into the Greek way of life, go find a café and enjoy a Greek coffee and one of the amazing pastries. Copyright - Sam Peters 2014 Anchorages South of Corfu Town CORFU TOWN Mouse Island Just South of Corfu Town, at the end of the Airport runway, there is a small Island with a small Church on. This is Mouse Island. You can anchor on the South side of this, but be aware of the shallow depths. It isn’t the best place for a night time mooring but a good lunch time spot, to sit and watch the planes fly over the mast. MOUSE ISLAND BENITSES Benitses Benitses is a great little harbour, the only problem is that is is always full of ‘live a board’ yachts and yachts that have been left. You can anchor just outside the harbour, which is good in a NW wind but not good in any wind from the East. PETRITI The village is a lovely place with a local Greek feel to it. It used to be an English party town and has since been taken back by the locals. There are some great tavernas and there are some nice little backstreets to wander around. Petriti Petriti is a small fishing harbour with some good fish restaurants. It is located to the West of Lefkimi Spit. 1 2 NO STRESS RATING You can either go bows to (or stern to if you are MOORING :) :) :) SWIMMING :) :) careful and are sure SHOPPING :) there is adequate depth) dining :) :) bars :) :) on the East side of the NOISE :) water N harbour (1) or free swing in the bay (2) just outside the harbour. PAXOS GIOS MONGONISI There are three lovely spots to spend the night in or visit along the way. A great spot to relax and go swimming, or you can hire scooters in either Lakka or Gios and really explore the island. EMERALD BAY ANTI - PAXOS Lakka Lakka is the most Northerly bay on Paxos. It really is a post card setting, with the turquoise waters and tavernas on the side of the quay. However it is a beautiful bay to free swing in, it is usually so clear you can see you anchor dig into the sand. Try not to anchor too close to other yachts and always think about where other anchors may have been dropped so as not to cross. 2 1 If it is busy, a good tip is to head over to the west corner (2) and put long lines ashore to a rock or two. There are some great tavernas in the village, not just on the water front but down the side streets. As well as a good range of bars that do a range of refreshing cocktails after a tough day on the water. The village has a few supermarkets that are not hard to find, as well as a couple of fresh fruit and veg shops and a brilliant bakery! Copyright - Sam Peters 2014 Gaios As you will see from the chart there are two entrances to this harbour. Use the Northern entrance as our boats will definitely touch the bottom in spots around the Southern entrance. Find a space on :) :) the main quay (1) to go stern to. Generally it is very busy in summer and you will have to pay a fee of around €30, which includes the electrical hook up and water. Alternatively you can long line on the outer part of the harbour (2) for free either side of the channel. This is a quieter place to stay and enjoy a swim. 2 1 From here you can hire scooters if you fancy a land based day. Or dig out your shoes and find some of the islands beautiful walking tracks. There are a number of good supermarkets, as well as traditional tavernas and bars, including a great fish restaurant in the back streets. Mongonissi A quiet little bay where you can go bows-to on the quay or take a long line to shore on the South side of the harbour. A small bay with one taverna run by a friendly family. Theo’s Taverna is one of the best in the North Ionian for Greek dancing (including fire dancing). A fun experience for any age. Copyright - Sam Peters 2014 Anti Paxos A beautiful place and for that reason the locals keep it a day anchorage. It can be busy around the middle of the day in summer, so if you want to see it at its finest it’s recommended that you head off early for a brunch stop, possibly before heading South. Emerald Bay The most Northern bay on the Island (1). Free swinging is the only way to moor in here, and finding space can be a challenge. 1 2 As mentioned before, getting there before all the day trip boats is the best way to see it. Great swimming and snorkelling, the perfect start to the day. Ormos Agrapidhia The bay to the south (2) of Emerald Bay . It too can get very busy for obvious reasons. Both anchorages can be uncomfortable when the sea breeze picks up in the afternoon so getting there early is recommended. NO STRESS RATING MOORING SWIMMING SHOPPING dining bars NOISE water electrics :) :) :) :) :) :) :) N N Paxos and Anti-Paxos are stunning on the West side. However you need to pay attention to the charts to avoid under water reefs. The Southern tip of Anti-Paxos has many reefs so is best to be avoided. Copyright - Sam Peters 2014 Mainland There are some great spots on the mainland to visit, all very different from each other giving you an interesting route and something for everyone on board. This section starts from the North. CORFU SAGIADA PLATARIA SIVOTA MOURTOS PARGA PAXOS TWO ROCK BAY PREVAZA VONITSA ! The first taverna as you walk around the harbour is run by a lovely Greek/German who serves prawns and calamari by the kilo at a reasonable price. Due to the shape of the bay/hills behind it can sometimes funnel the afternoon breeze for a great sail into harbour. MOORING SWIMMING SHOPPING dining bars NOISE water electrics :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) Y N When you get close you will see a low lying harbour wall, enter through a fairly narrow gap on the South side, which is very shallow so approach slowly. You can moor stern-to on the wall on the West side. It is good holding but make sure you have around 2-3 boat lengths of chain out. If it is quiet you can also moor side to on any of the left hand side walls. The port police will want to see your papers and take a small mooring fee. They are located in the building at the end of the quay. There are no shops but you can buy very nice fresh bread from the tavernas in the morning. It is a good place to fill up with water. If you want to stretch your legs there is a nice walk (about 2-3 hours) up to the old abandoned village, just head up the only road into the village. Some nice views, but can be a hot walk. Plataria Another harbour at the end of a large bay, also with some glamorous afternoon sailing. Moor on the town quay stern-to or on the outer wall. Either place needs plenty of anchor chain out (3 boat lengths) as the muddy bottom is known to drag. There numerous tavernas, including Oil and Lemon with tasty Greek food and Olgas where there are good showers as well as traditional classics on the menu. You can fill with water if you ask Olga nicely. The main supermarket on the left of the harbour will deliver to your yacht if you are on the quay. A range of much needed ice cream and clothing shops can also be found Do not be tempted to exit over the 2m bar to the South of here, the sand bank does move and depending on atmospheric conditions the water level can drop. In Parga there are a few super markets, ask a local for directions as it would take the rest of this book to describe the streets of Parga. There are a whole range of souvineer shops, cocktail bars, tavernas and everything else here. A perfect place to spend an evening exploring or relaxing in. There are also bars and restaurants along the main beach if you don’t want to venture over the hill. Our favourite restaurant is Castellos, which does one of the best steaks in Greece. They are located in the centre of the back streets. Again ask if you can’t find them. It does get busy here in summer so go early or book early to avoid disappointment. It has a modern Greek feel to the town, with lots of water side cafes and bars. NO STRESS RATING To get in there is a buoyed channel all the way into the harbour starting from around a mile outside, which you should stay on the starboard (right hand side) of, so that you pass other vessels Port to Port. Copyright - Sam Peters 2014 Vonitsa The first harbour you get to as you sail into the inland sea. After following the buoyed channel through Prevaza, you can then curve around the vaguely buoyed channel, following the headland on your port side. You can then go either side of the small island on the point. Going through the centre of the gap keeps you in the deep water. You can moor stern-to on the quay. The town quay (in front of the tavernas) is best avoided as it can get bumpy when the land breeze starts in the evening. If there is no space inside you can free swing out side the harbour in a suitable depth position. NO STRESS RATING MOORING SWIMMING SHOPPING dining bars NOISE water electrics :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) N N There are good local tavernas as well as a Venetian castle to explore. If you are going to swim off the beach be aware of the little black spiky sea urchins (tooth paste is good to draw out the spines). There are other nice spots to explore in the inland sea, but be aware of the shallow patches. Just outside of Vonitsa there are some lovely anchorages that would be perfect for a quiet night onboard. Further South South of Prevaza is the Lefkas Bridge and canal. After Lefkas, is a whole new area to explore called the South Ionian. Copyright - Sam Peters 2014 The South Ionian LEFKAS MARINA NIDRI VHILO MEGANISI KALAMOS VASAKILI KASTOS ITHAKA KEFALONIA The first stage of getting into the South Ionian is the Lefkas Bridge. This opens EVERY HOUR ON THE HOUR (during day light hours). On the North side of the bridge there is not a lot of room to wait so it is recommended that you time it well to get to the gate around the right time. There is a very rough wall you can tie too Starboard side to, but it is often taken by fishing boats. On the South side is a canal which is fairly narrow, so it is recommended when coming back up it, give yourself some room, don’t bunch up around the gate too much. On the North side of the gate there is a marked…ish channel, which has been dredged in 2014. It is best if possible to keep to the sand spit side of the small channel, keeping it nice and slow and keep an eye on the depth gauge. Remember your eyes work better than any chart plotter! MOORING SWIMMING SHOPPING dining bars NOISE Water Elecrics :) :) :) :) :) :) Y Y :) :) :) :) :) :) There are three choices when mooring here. The first is to go stern-to on the town quay, which costs nothing but is fairly busy. The holding here is not the best so it is good to get as much anchor chain out as possible (3 boat lengths). The other free option is to free swing in front of the stern-to yachts, think about where their anchors are and try not to cross anchors with them. Do not anchor in the main channel. TOWN QUAY THE MARINA FUEL QUAY THE CHANNEL SOUTH The third option is to call up Lefkas Marina on VHF69 and request a berth for the night. It will cost around €40 but you will get shore power, water and good showers. A fuel quay here if you are running low The town and marina has a variety of great tavernas, restaurants and bars, however this does mean some nights can be a little noisy. Good provisioning options with three supermarkets and some really good fruit and veg shops, a pharmacy and a butcher. Anchorages Near Lefkas After heading down the channel from Lefkas there are a few good anchorages for lunch or the night. Ligia is the first harbour on the right as you exit the channel. This is a small fishing harbour, which our yachts can not enter but anchoring is possible nearby in around 5m of water. Dinghy ashore where you can get great fresh fish in one of the tavernas. Once you get down to near Nidri you will see a Nisis Skorpidhi and Nisis Skorpios. These are both private Islands owned by the Onassis family. Anchor in one of the beautiful bays but please do not go ashore. Copyright - Sam Peters 2014 Nidri Town Quay - Lefkada Nidri is an excellent place to stop and restock the supplies. There are good supermarkets, fruit and veg shops, as well as A LOT of souvenir shops. If there is space you can moor stern to on the town quay which is straight ahead of you as you come in. This is vaguely sign posted from the main road, ask a local for help. The route is around 1 hour each way with the reward of a refreshing swim at the end. If you are interested in water sports this is a good place to waterski, wakeboard, parasail and go on the ringo/banana boats. You will see them at the end of the quay on the beach. Tranquil Bay If you can’t get onto the quay in Nidri or you want a quieter night then head across the opposite side of the channel to Tranquil Bay. Dimitri will always look after you well here. If you need supplies there is a small supermarket behind the tavernas at the bottom of the hill, ask for directions if you don’t spot it. If crew numbers allow, having someone in a dinghy to tie lines ashore first before you anchor and reverse in can also be helpful as a cross breeze can often make it interesting with nothing holding your stern.
