Is it any wonder we’re always banging
on about the weather when it changes
the short-term fortunes of retailers
and their personnel?
While the rain hasn’t been great for bike retail, other
industries have benefited. BikeBiz sister mag PCR, dealing
with the retailing of PCs (you guessed it), conversely has
seen retailers perform well. One day before Halfords
published its results, John Lewis revealed that store sales had
increased 15.3 per cent year-on-year, with its Electrical and
Home Technology department cited a ‘star performer’. The
retailer said that the inclement weather had played a part in
those results, with customers willing to spend on indoor
activities and equipment when it’s cats and dogs outside.
So maybe that’s why we do like to talk about the weather
so much in the UK, when a percentage of takings depends
on it. But just how much poor weather really dents profits is
a bit of a moot point, however. With the regularly
inconsistent summers we get in Britain you’d be mad to
assume May to September would solely see sun and the
accompanying sales boost. Do any falls in sales due to the
weather just get evened out – with customers spending the
same amount – just over a shorter period when there’s a
break in the rain?
The Olympics may be the other significant factor in how
bike sales perform for the rest of the summer period. And
then there’s Bradley Wiggins’ Tour de France win (fingers
crossed – I’m writing this three days before the Tour has
ended). Will success at the top translate to sales at the till,
whatever the weather?

I WAS lucky enough to spend a couple
of weeks in sunny Spain last month,
where temperatures regularly hit 34C
and I was beginning to wonder if I had
been imagining all that wet stuff falling
from the sky back home.
Once the fortnight was over and I
stepped off the plane in Blighty it was
soon pretty clear that I hadn’t dreamt
up the rain and that the UK had indeed
just seen one of its wettest May and Junes ever.
Needless to say, that’s not ideal for the cycle industry,
where the sunchine/rain balance is literally the difference
between enthusiasts and fair-weather getting on their bikes
and into their local bike shop.
Halfords’ quarterly results said as much and reported a fall
in like-for-like revenue for its cycle sales over the thriteen
weeks leading up to June 29th – perhaps a bit of a shock
when cycles have, together with the rest of its leisure
business, usually been a solid performer for the retail chain
of late. There’s more on how the wet weather has impacted
on the cycle trade over the page in our news section.

Dire weather

bike sales
Wet summer sees dip for retailers But mudguard and rainwear are up
By Mark Sutton
CYCLING BUSINESSES across the country are
reporting tough trading conditions largely
thanks to the wet spring and start of summer.
Halfords openly pinpointed the weather as
a key factor for a 9.6 per cent dip in cycling
revenues in the first quarter. In the same Q1
report CEO David Wild announced his
resignation from the retailer.
Evans Cycles too pointed to a footfall dip
thanks to the poor conditions. Ben Hart,
director of marketing and eCommerce at
Evans said: “Unpredictable weather over the
spring and summer has certainly had an
impact on our customers and their interest in
cycling. When the sun is shining customers
respond, when it’s not then cycling decreases
and it’s tougher to get customers to invest in
new bikes and kit. On the upside, sales of
mudguards and rainwear has seen stellar like
for like growth.”
Brian Curran, owner of Pedalworks in
Dunstable told BikeBiz that he had expected a
combination of Olympic and Tour de France
hype to motivate cyclists to spend big this
summer, but this has so far failed to
materialise.
“I can say that we had a poor May, but
sales in June bounced back and were nearly
double May’s levels. July has got off to a slow
start though. I think that we all had very high
expectations that the combination of
weather, Brad and Cav and then London
2012 would provide a huge boost, but
we haven’t really seen the take off yet.
We’ve stocked up for a good summer
and hope that it will be along soon.
Maybe we’ll get out for a sunny ride or
two ourselves.”

UPGRADE HAS inked an exclusive UK
distribution deal with precision sprocket
manufacturer Praxis.
Run by industry veterans David Earle and
Ardy Chen, the firm boasts to be the only
manufacturer, aside from Shimano, able
to create forged shifting rings. A very
close association with Dragon
Technology Manufacturing in
Taiwan allows for exclusive metal
forming techniques to be used –
ultimately creating some of the
most accurate tooth profiling
and long wearing sprockets in
the business.
With offices in Santa Cruz
County and Taiwan, Praxis'
purpose is to enable OEM
customers of any size to enter
the drivetrain market without the
heavy engineering investment and
focus on manufacturing that is
typically required.
Launching as a standalone brand at last
year's Interbike, the product range currently
includes road, MTB and cross rings, as well as
a BB converter and BB sets.

Bancroft launches Elephant BMX Distribution
US labels Volume, Demolition and S-One helmets first to join Elephant stable Shop tour planned with
US brand stars Stock arriving as early as September Bancroft remains associate editor of The Albion
By Mark Sutton
20-INCH BMX industry veteran and Albion
associate editor Steve Bancroft has set up
Elephant Distribution – founded with
Volume, Demolition and S-One helmets
on board.
Set up alongside business partner
Russell Lowe, Bancroft has moved quickly
to emphasise that the distribution
business is a separate entity to the
magazine. He said: “Elephant Distribution
is a completely separate venture to The
Albion. Obviously, it goes without saying
that there will be no editorial bias towards
Elephant brands and I will be paying for
any adverts I run in the mag, it couldn’t
work any other way. It’s going to be hard
work giving full commitment to both
ventures, but after working on magazines
for so long I’m used to be bit of stress and
I’ve never been one to shy away from a
bit of hard graft.”
With stock of Brian Castillo’s Volume
and Demolition labels landing as soon as
September, Bancroft has already laid out
plans for a UK shop tour, happening later
in August.
“These days the majority of BMX

thing as nearly all of it rides well and is
durable and affordable, but it does mean

that marketing is very much key,” said
Bancroft.
“The BMX industry has come down to
an ideas game, and we’ve got lots of
them. To relaunch the brand over here and
kick off some relationships with a few
dealers we have a Volume and Demolition
shop tour happening in late August. We’re
bringing over Stevie Churchill, Mike
‘Hucker’ Clark, Broc Raiford, Chris Doyle
and Mike Mastroni and we’ll be putting
out a bunch of content from that.”
Of the product, Bancroft concludes: “In
the USA, Volume and Demolition are two

of the biggest brands in the industry, they
are up there on the same plain as Fit and

to be mirrored in the UK.”

Halfords’ chief
exec moves on
Four years after joining the huge retailer, Wild
leaves top job Search now on for successor
By Jonathon Harker
DAVID WILD has stepped down from his
role of CEO at Halfords.
The announcement came on the same
day (Thursday July 19th) that Halfords
revealed a fall in like-for-like sales for the
13 weeks to June 29th (see page four).
Wild joined Halfords in August 2008
from Wal-Mart US, where he was senior
vice president for new business
development. Prior to that, Wild held the
role of president and MD at Wal-Mart
Germany. He spent the preceding 18 years
at Tesco – latterly in the role of Group
Supply Chain Director.
While the search is on for a successor,
Dennis Millard, non-executive chairman, is
to become interim executive chairman
until a successor is appointed – a process
that will take a number of months,
according to Halfords. Following that,
Millard will return to his non-exec
chairman role. Millard will also chair
Halfords’ exec committee while the search
is on for the new CEO, assisted by his
Board colleagues finance director Andrew
Findlay and commercial director Paul
McClenaghan and the rest of the
leadership team.
“I feel it is time to step
down and seek new
challenges elsewhere.”
Wild said: “I have enjoyed my
time at Halfords and feel we have
accomplished a great deal during
my tenure as CEO. Now that we
have developed the overall strategy
that will guide the future of the
business over the coming years I
feel it is the appropriate time to
step down and seek fresh challenges
elsewhere.”

Ecommerce gold
In August 2011 a report by the London School of Economics (LSE) found that
cycling is worth over £2.9 billion to the UK economy, with almost a quarter
of the population getting on their bikes. Dave Lomax of Sitemakers
discusses the importance of online in today’s retail environment...
“Simply going online

Dave Lomax, Sitemakers
10 BIKEBIZ AUGUST
IN RECENT years a combination of factors
including record fuel prices at the pumps, cycle
to work schemes, and a concerted effort by
national and local government to improve the
provision of cycle routes has resulted in a boom
in those participating in cycling.
Correspondingly the improvement in high
speed broadband in the UK combined with an
increase in mobile devices is bringing about yet
another surge in online shopping. Now over 25
per cent of all retail sales are taken online and
this figure is rapidly increasing.
Retailers are fast looking to the internet in
the face of struggling high streets stores. For
many, such as Wiggle and Chain Reaction Cycles,
both originally independent bike retailers, the
web has provided a unique opportunity where
they compete on equal terms with businesses
many times their size.
Those that have successfully diversified online
combine the latest in user engagement and
functionality to help effectively turn website

visitors into paying customers. Above all else
they recognise the huge importance of investing
in online marketing, as well as the need to
evolve and redevelop when necessary to ensure
that their ecommerce website delivers a high
return on investment.
For most, getting to grips with selling online is
a daunting prospect. In reality, with the right
help, advice and expertise it’s a great deal easier
and friendlier than you may think. Above all else
you must be committed, simply going online
because you feel you ought to have a website
will more than likely end in a fall.
Providing your customers with a fantastic
‘shopping’ experience is where it’s at. This
doesn’t necessarily mean flashy animation and
wacky graphics, but an online shop that’s easy
for your customers to find the products they’re
looking for, engaging and informative content, a
fast checkout procedure, and the provision for
your customers to be able to contact you easily
and quickly, perhaps by way of live chat tools.
Ecommerce solutions that are capable of
growing with your business, provide you with
your own unique design, an intuitive
administration system and ongoing technical
support can easily cost many thousands of
pounds. However this kind of investment is, on
the whole, significantly lower than the costs of
opening and running a bricks and mortar outlet.
What’s more, growth is without doubt more
abundant than it currently is on our High Streets.
From a purely commercial perspective, the
cycle industry lends itself incredibly well to
online shopping. As a social activity it has huge
scope for social media marketing, it has a deeply
loyal following, and provides a host of
opportunities in the way of specialising in
particular sectors, be it cycle fashion, safety gear
or perhaps concentrating on particular brands.
Recent moves by the Government including
nearly £11 million allocated in April this year
targeted at helping school children to learn how
to cycle safely and confidently on our roads
promise a bright and prosperous future for UK
retailers.
This summer the British Olympic Cycle team
have their sights firmly fixed on improving on
their haul of eight gold medals from the Beijing
games. The likes of Sir Chris Hoy, Mark Cavendish
and Shanaze Reade will undoubtedly inspire the
next generation already used to a digital
environment, and primed as your future paying
customers.

SAINT GOBAIN
Norglide
bearings
used in a
front mech
Bearing up
The NorGlide
bearing was created
to improve rear
suspension pivots
Even small, but perfectly formed, components like bearings
can have a significant impact on a bike’s performance.
Jonathon Harker talks to Saint-Gobain’s marketing
manager Paul Humphreys about the nitty-gritty…
MTB ATHLETES Catherine Vipond and Andrew
Watson are both no strangers to winning,
Vipond the current champion of the Women’s
Canada Cup cycling competition, while Watson
has won the national Men’s Canada Cup series
Under-23 competition three times. Both
elected to ride Norco’s Phaser during the 2011
championship season.
The Phaser is one of a growing number of
bikes that has made use of Saint Gobain’s
lightweight Norglide composite bearings – in
its rear suspension.
BikeBiz picks up the story with SaintGobain’s marketing manager Paul
Humphreys…
Why did Norco team up with Saint Gobain?
It really started with a discussion between
Norco and Saint Gobain – they were
developing a bike that was relatively new type
for them and we discussed how our composite
bearings could be used for the suspension
pivots on the rear suspension.
They found that Norglide bearings provide
significant weight savings – they could save
quite a bit of weight because the bearings
weigh 1.2g each. I’d estimate the weight of a
ball bearing to be around twelve grams each.
With for or six of them on each frame that’s a
significant saving.
So weight was one of the key reasons?
Definitely, we find that weight is either the

philosophy is to

for the
application.”
Paul Humphreys,
Saint Gobain
most or one of the most important factors
when we talk to bike designers.
The other advantage of Norglide for Norco
was that we could provide a low friction
alternative. With suspension, the bike provides
a smooth comfortable ride and offers the
traction at the rear end of the bike between
the wheel and the ground through the
suspension system.
In addition Norglide bearings are durable
and reliable – they don’t have to be changed
too frequently and also maintenance-free.
The other benefit is that the bike is sold
mainly in Canada, where they have quite a bit
of wet weather. It’s important that the
Norglide bearing is durable in those kind of
gritty and wet conditions that the MTB is used
in so there are no bearing failures.
Has Saint-Gobain worked with any other
bike brands?
Madison UK used Norglide bearings in the
Saracen Ariel, that’s one of the most
recognisable names. We’ve also worked closely
with Cane Creek, where they use Norglide
bearings in the AER headset – which I believe
they call the world’s lightest headset.
How long have you been in the bike
market?
Probably about ten years, since then it’s been
building from year to year – especially over the
last seven years.
How large is the range for the bike
industry?
We have a whole range of products, but our
philosophy in general is to have a custommade bearing for the customer’s application.
So we don’t actually have a catalogue range of
products, we develop bespoke bearings
specifically for the customer.
Is it the fastest bearing on the market? Is
that the right term?
In terms of superlatives, I’m not sure fastest is
the right one, but it might be the lightest – it’s
certainly very lightweight and that’s why it’s
been selected by our customers. It does have
the ability to control and reduce friction in the
bearing area, so that you have a very smooth,
easy to operate suspension joint or fork. But
fastest? I’m not sure I could apply that –
maintenance-free, lightweight and reliable are
the superlatives I’d use.
How would you summarise Norglide
bearings for the industry?
Norglide bearings are small parts that a cyclist
might not necessarily see on the bike, but it’s
an important part which improves
performance and the rider experience, whether
that’s on a city bike, road race, folding bike or a
cool MTB like the Norco Phaser. It’s something
that helps the overall experience.

From product
launches to shameless

Eurobike has it all

EUROBIKE 2012
Back in the Euro-zone
Probably the world’s biggest international show for the bike trade is just
around the corner. Jonathon Harker provides a brief guide…
AND BEFORE you know it, Eurobike is around
the corner. If it was ever in any doubt, the
event has long since come of age – this year it
its 21st – and it can reasonably lay claim to
be the title of most important cycle trade
show in the world, though there are other
contenders who would argue the point.
From beginnings as a Southern German
trade show with a MTB bias virtually every
bike genre is served by the event, including the
mighty (on the continent at least) electric
bicycle market, but more of that later.
This year the show runs from Wednesday
August 29th to Saturday September 1st, with
the Demo Day taking place on the Tuesday
before the show opens.
Just when you thought the show could
scarcely become any bigger, this year the
show is expected to see 1,200 exhibitors (100
more than 2011) from 45 countries. Industry
visitor numbers are expected to exceed
40,000, while over 1,800 journalists from 36
countries will be struggling to make sure they
don’t miss the biggest news from those 1,200
exhibitors.
Recent developments like the Demo Day
have gone from strength-to-strength – this
year with some companies ‘exhibiting’ at the
Demo Day instead of the show proper. Last
year Demo Day predictably broke its own
records helped by the good weather
(compared with 2010’s flooded exhibition
grounds). 1,840 visitors attended the Demo
Day (up from 1,460), with 608 media
representatives (577 in 2010) from 34
countries.
Location has helped the Demo Day grow –
test riders will now be able to roll through the
foothills of the Alps in the Allgau region, while
there will also be a large test area in
Ratzenried. It’s all about a 35-minute drive
from the exhibition grounds and attendees will
be able to test out MTBs, road bikes, e-bikes,
apparel, accessories, parts and just about
anything else they can lay their hands on.
E-bikes, customisation and wheel sizes
Despite the naysayers, e-bikes have proved to
be steady sellers in some European territories,
so they’ll be back at Eurobike and claiming a
significant presence once again. Germany is
set to sell 400,000 e-bikes this year, according
to the ZEV (the German bicycle association),
having grown eight-fold over five years. More
electric newcomers to the market are
expected at Eurobike, with the likes of Yamaha
offering e-bike parts alongside the likes of
other heavy hitters like Bosch and Panasonic.
Yamaha is supplying Giant, according to
Eurobike’s organisers.
Other tips from the people behind the
Friedrichshafen-set show include the
continued shift towards bicycles as a style
BIKEBIZ.COM
statement, from fixies to folding bikes. Will
Eurobike see the world of mountain bikes
continue to tussle over the best wheel sizes? It
seems so, with 29ers and 650b vying for
industry domination.
While stalking the halls of Eurobike we’ll
also see more electronic gear shifting systems
– for 2013 Shimano has announced electronic
gear hubs for sporty leisure bikes. Sticking with
electrics (notice the pattern here?) Fox Racing
will show its new generation of suspension
forks and rear wheel shock absorbers, which
will communicate with each other
electronically. Time to take a course in
electrics, maybe?
The regulars
Trends will also be covered in show stalwarts
like the Fashion Show, regularly help in the
East Foyer (three times a day) and also in the
Eurobike Awards, hosted for the eighth time
with the internationally recognised iF Design
Forum. While only ten entries will win one of
the coveted Gold Awards, a good few will pick
up prizes (59 last year) out of the hundreds of
entries (430 in 2011, from 27 countries).
Winners get their hands on the prizes at the
Awards Ceremony, held in the East Foyer on
the opening day of the show – Wednesday
August 29th.
If you’re tired of being dry you could always
get involved with the Lake Jump (Thursday,
6pm) or in need of more bike thrills participate
in the ‘King of Dirt Jump’ contest for mountain
bikes and BMX. There’s a party too if you're in
need of a shindig. That takes place on Friday
August 31st from 6.30pm (or whenever you
can grab a beverage) in the West Open Air
Grounds.
If you’ve something to
announce to the world’s
cycle industry, Eurobike
is not a bad place to
start...
Getting there
If you haven’t booked a hotel yet then
prepare your tent as rooms are usually very
thin on the ground even months before
the show takes place. Getting to
Friedrichshafen can be an ordeal too,
with no direct flights from the UK. Did
we ever tell you about the time the
BikeBiz team missed a connecting flight in
Franfurt and ended up on a seven hourplus train journey through Germany?
Once you’re there, however, getting
around shouldn’t be too hard. There’s
a shuttle bus making runs at the start
and end of each day, while the
catamaran and ferry take visitors
across Lake Constance. There’s
more on travel around Eurobike
at the official site
www.eurobike-show.de.
Missed flight connections
nonewithstanding, we’ll be at
Eurobike, so see you there.

CYCLE SHOW 2012
Going big in Brum
There won’t be too much HED scratching
with sales teams on hand to answer trade
and consumer questions at the NEC
Cycle Show’s NEC debut last year was always going to throw up challenges for organisers catering for a hardto-please trade audience. Ahead of the return to the Midlands venue, Mark Sutton talks to head of
marketing Lucinda Hyde-McCready about how the exhibitors themselves are shaping the 2012 show…
HOW DOES it feel to see so many big name
brands committing to space in 2012?
Specialized and Trek clearly have a large
consumer following and they’re both being very
proactive in promoting the show with ticket
offers and incentives, which we can see is
helping to drive tickets already. Having their
2013 test fleets on the MTB track is also a big
draw for mountain bikers. The ability to properly
test bikes on an outdoor facility was a major
reason for moving to the NEC and the only issue
last year was a shortage of bikes to meet
demand, which won’t be a problem this time.
Raleigh were the third most asked for brand
at the show last year, behind Specialized and
Trek, despite the fact they had a stand at the
show. In fairness, it was only a small space for
electric bikes previously, but no-one will be able
to miss them this year, with over 250m2 of
stand space and a special Raleigh 125 entrance.
What incentives are there for the trade to
attend this year’s exhibition?
The theatre will have some really interesting
trade content this year. Dave Clutterbuck from
Future Publishing will be presenting the findings
of their proprietary BikeTrack research into the
shopping habits of cycling enthusiasts. Future’s
head of search and social media, James Morell,
will be showing you how to get your shop’s
website listed higher in search engine results.
Something that should be fun for the trade is
the new BMX Shop Battle on Thursday that
we’re running with Ride UK magazine. It’ll be a
chance for local flow riders from each shop to
ride on the street course against each other with
the winning shop getting GoPros as prizes and
free online advertising with Ride for a year.
Also on Saturday after the show closes, the
exhibitor party will be happening alongside the
crit racing just outside the show. Sweetspot are
doing a brilliant job of bringing together all the
elite men’s teams like Rapha Condor, Team UK
Youth, Raleigh-GAC, Node4, plus the elite UK

women and the top youth girls and boys.
“40 per cent of
last year’s
trade visitors
had never been
to the show
before...”
Lucinda HydeMcCready
From last year’s NEC debut, did you see a
greater geographical spread in attendees?
The move to the NEC certainly delivered a new
and much broader audience than before. It had
always been a very South East-centric show (79
per cent of visitors), but last year saw a big shift
to other parts of the UK. On the trade day,
exhibitors were really pleased to see a lot of
new IBDs – 40 per cent of trade visitors had
never been to a Cycle Show before. We know
some companies were concerned that there’d
be a drop-off in quality of consumer visitor, but
that proved not to be the case at all. The ABC1
percentage was 80.1 per cent compared to 81
per cent the year before and the number of
people spending £1k, or more, per annum on
bike products actually went up.
e-bike guru, Lloyd Clarkson, at the show hosting
a talk on this sector of the market.
Who’s opening the show this year?
Jo Rowsell will be opening the show on the first
public day. We have someone very, very special
lined up for the trade day, which BikeBiz will
report first.
How can firms get a bike on the test track?
Just by contacting anyone on the show team.
We have expanded the registration and ‘pit’
area for the MTB track so we can
accommodate pop-up tents too.
Who are the sales contacts for the show?
Cheryl Carroll 0207 288 6621, or Bansi Patel

NEED TO KNOW
What feedback did you receive on last year
and how has this helped shape 2012?
Getting some of the big brands back ticks a lot
of the boxes right off the bat, as that was the
major point raised. We’ve also looked at all the
feature content and added new features to
address gaps. Some exhibitors said parts of the
venue had less atmosphere than other areas, so
to help fix this we’ve moved the theatre.
We also wanted to up the ante on the
mountain bike front, so are adding a pump track
sponsored by DMR. The pro contests are just
plain good fun to watch, and the masterclass
sessions tick another box for us to keep
providing interactive content.
The electric bike companies came to us after
last year’s show with a lot of feedback. We
listened to them and committed to making the
changes they wanted and the response has been
great with nearly 20 e-bike exhibitors signed up.
Any seminars scheduled for the trade day?
The ACT are hosting several Cytech sessions and
one on retail finance. Raleigh will also have its

GATORADE
Dave Brailsford’s ‘marginal gains’
strategy has inspired Gatorade in
its work with Team Sky
Put your drinking cap on…
With nearly 50 years dedicated service to the science behind sports nutrition, Gatorade has built a
reputation for extensive research and development, identifying that no two athlete’s bodies behave the
same while under strain. Mark Sutton finds out what else the brand is learning alongside its partners at
Loughborough university, Team Sky and rugby stars today…
What goes into developing a sports drink
from start to production?
For us the process hasn’t changed much from
1965 when Dr Robert Cade and his team at the
University of Florida invented the world’s first
sports drink for the Florida Gators. Developing
sports nutrition products means identifying
athletes’ physiological and functional needs,
then carrying out research and producing the
best possible solution, after which you need to
continually test and evolve products with real
athlete feedback. It’s what Dr Cade did back
then and we like to continue in that spirit of
genuinely science-led innovation.
22 BIKEBIZ AUGUST
Has it always been in the pipeline to develop
and sell your product to the cycling world?
Gatorade has been involved in endurance sports
for many years – particularly triathlon. Many
people will remember our partnership with
Ironman since the 1970s, for example. Working
with endurance athletes gives us very specific
data about how the body works at the very
limits of human ability. Our work in cycling
today is a continuation of this.
Tell us a bit about your link up with British
Cycling and Team Sky?
Gatorade is about fuelling athletic performance.
“There are
many products
out there that
are functionally
great, but
voluntary
intake can be an
issue...”
In order to do this we need to work with the
best athletes and their support teams – it’s
these singularly focused guys that give us the
cutting edge scientific data to feed into our
research and development agenda.
From Usain Bolt to Serena Williams, the
National Football League in the US to the
Brownlee brothers here in the UK, we have to
work with the very best in their respective
fields in order to develop the innovations that
will provide transformative sports nutrition
innovations in the future.
British Cycling and Team Sky fit squarely
within this strategy – there isn’t a team we

work with anywhere in the world right
now that is as singularly focused on
finding marginal gains to drive excellence. Dave
Brailsford and his team are all about success –
they strip away anything that doesn’t drive it –
and they only work with partners that can
support this vision. We like this singularity of
focus – it’s what Gatorade is all about.
How much R&D work do these partnerships
produce?
Our team at the Gatorade Sports Science
Institute (GSSI) based at Loughborough
University work with BCF and Team Sky on
various research projects and collaborations. As
the relationship progresses more and more of
these will happen.
What do athlete’s typically ask you for?
Athletes want to better understand their own
body’s nutritional needs and plan the strategies
to fuel them to success. Often they overlook
the fact that each body’s needs can be very
different and our GSSI team are trained to
identify these differences in detail and prescribe
strategies that work best for each individual. A
good example of our work that most people
know about by now is the triathlete Chris Legh.
Chris infamously broke down with a
dehydration-induced bowel shutdown in the
finish line chute at the 1997 Ironman Hawaii.
As it was a Gatorade event, our team were
there to see the awful moment first-hand and
we made the offer of some specific testing at
the main GSSI labs in Chicago. At these labs we
have an environmental chamber, which can
replicate the extreme temperature and
humidity of Kona and after countless sweat and
blood tests we discovered that Chris had a
relatively unique sweat rate. The team were
able to formulate an individualised protocol for
Chris to be able to the replace the amount of
sweat and sodium he was losing. Chris still
refers to those two days of testing as, “the best
two days I could have applied to my career”.
24 BIKEBIZ AUGUST
That story sums up what we’re here for – we
work with all types of athletes – from the
world’s most successful teams and individuals,
to everyday athletes achieving the incredible.
Another example is Mark Bayliss who is trying
to be the first person to do the Enduroman
Arch to Arc (87 mile run, English Channel swim
and then a 181-mile bike ride) without a
wetsuit during the swim. The sport scientists at
the GSSI help these athletes maximise their
potential and the payback is the knowledge and
data that each new interaction provides. And
we don’t just work with sponsored athletes –
almost every level of athlete can teach us
something, so the GSSI team strive to work
with as many different types as possible. If
you’re interested in performing at your body’s
very best, the GSSI can help.
The G Series is your main performance
focused line – what do these bring to the
table that’s new?
They are designed holistically with the athlete
in mind; not just backed by the best science
and made with the best ingredients – which is
the minimum you’d expect from Gatorade –
but also designed to be usable in the way
athletes need them to. One example is taste –
there are so many products out there which
functionally have some of the right ingredients,
but they don’t taste great, so voluntary intake
can be an issue. We know that how a product
tastes is just as important as the functional
ingredients it contains – every athlete is also a
human being and human beings – even those
working at the limits of athletic achievement –
like stuff that tastes good.
Take our Recover product, it provides the
protein athletes need towards the end of a hard
session to bounceback, which you would
expect. But we’ve designed it to be ready to
consume and without a shake-like consistency,
meaning it is palatable whether chilled, or at
room temperature. So an athlete can gulp the
bottle down immediately after a session,
wherever they are and without the need for a
fridge, ice, milk and a shaker. This means that
the athlete is more likely to consume and in
turn recover more effectively.
Another example – the new Prime product
has been designed with packaging that won’t
burst in your gym bag and you can open onehanded with your teeth on a bike – it’s the
difference between understanding the theory of
sports nutrition and the reality of how athletes
actually train and compete.
“More elite
athletes use our
products than
that of any
other sports
nutrition brand.
This gives us a
very broad base
of experience...”
British Cycling and Sky aside, you’re involved
in many forms of cycling and other sports –
what other athletes and disciplines
contribute to Gatorade’s work?
Well we’ve been around longer than pretty
much any of the other sports nutrition guys, so
we’ve had the chance to work with the best
athletes in every major sport on the planet;
more elite athletes in the world use our
products than any other brand. This heritage
and scale gives us a very broad base of
experience from which to develop our strategy
and products.
Here in the UK we are focusing on cycling
and triathlon (working with Ironman UK, the
Brownlee Brothers and Stephen and Bella
Bayliss for example) and Rugby (all 12 teams of
the Aviva Premiership) predominantly, but we
also work with world-leading Olympians such
as Dr Tim Brabants (Kayak), Joanne Jackson
(swimming) and Victoria Pendleton (cycling)
among others.
Any plans to develop solid foods, gels or
tablets tailored to sports use?
We definitely have more products coming out –
details of these will be coming later in the year.
Just follow @gatoradeuk on Twitter for updates.
Of course the really exciting innovations are
the transformative ones that will be unlike
anything currently in the market, but I can’t tell
you about those at the moment – but watch
this space.

Bedford & Biggleswade
Unlikely
bed-fellows
On our travels Mystery
Shopper has come across a
lot, parking tickets, sat navs
leading us across army

more. It gets better, though.
Read on to find out which
bike shop stunned us with
the advice ‘buy from a bloke
in a van’ this month…
26 BIKEBIZ AUGUST
Halfords
Go Outdoors
ON THE back of a sterling experience in Cheltenham
last month, I’d hoped the winds of change were blowing
through stores nationwide and that Biggleswade’s
branch would similarly impress.
This experience was, to put it blunty, quite amusing
from my position of anonymity – one in which this
Mystery Shopper had to strain to resist a guffaw at the
advice being dealt. Granted the assistant was proactive
in approaching me, but I almost wish he’d have stayed
away given the coming experience.
“Why would anyone want to take a £1,000 bike
through the dirt,” said he, while err.. selling me a
Boardman. “You’ll wreck it,” he continued.
So what about the Carreras, I ask. “You’ll buy two of
those for the one Boardman. They’re not up to much
when compared to a Boardman’s build quality.”
I thought he’d just said I’d wreck it with a little mud?
“Your best bet is to go up to Chicksands and mingle,
see what they ride and I probably shouldn’t be saying this,
but I believe there’s a bloke who sells bikes from his van
up there too, he’ll see you right,” concludes the salesman.
LARGELY A curiosity visit, BikeBiz has noticed the rise of
non-specialist chains gradually entering the bike market.
Go Outdoors is no exception, aside from the gradual
creep being more of a full-on assault on the family
cycling sector. Knowing I’d not find my performance
mountain bike here, I switched the brief to ‘canal
workhorse’ and proceeded to seek assistance.
It was refreshing to see a healthy workforce in a store
as large as this and I was stopped on three separate
occasions by staff looking to help. One even offered to
fetch me a trolley so I could ‘take a bike home today’.
During my time with one assistant I was told of the
store’s ability to fully PDI check a bike and glancing over
at the Park Tool clad workshop, it was a believable claim,
especially given the staffer’s reasonable depth of
knowledge. While no expert on technical elements, I can
see families being suitably impressed by the
Diamondbacks and Claud Butlers on offer.
As a specialist in outdoor gear and with a growing
presence nationwide, this could be another threat to the
independent cycling business specialising in family bikes.

Transition Cycles
STOCKISTS AND advocates of Cube and Specialized,
among other brands, Transition is one of those stores
where you immediately know that you’re in the
presence of riders.
Quickly seeing to customers, which for a slightly out
of town store wasn’t lacking, Mystery Shopper was
quickly greeted.
From the start the sales pitch was very much about
brands, with emphasis placed on the reputations of both
the aforementioned labels, as well as on Transition’s own
customer service reputation. Incentives for buying here
were provided in the form of concise and value for
money service plans, as well as the promise to make
sure the bike was fitted correctly for my dimensions.
A Cube slightly above my budget was removed from
a difficult to reach rack in order for it to be properly
demonstrated and the assistant’s enthusiasm and
personal Cube ownership shone through in his depth of
knowledge as a result. Near faultless sales pitch, though
could have asked for deposit to cement my custom.
Cycle King
Pedals Cycles
ARRIVING DURING a delivery, staff were flying in and
out the front door shifting boxes. Luckily for customers,
the boss had a sharp eye on potential punters and
instructed a staffer to take a moment to serve those on
the shop floor.
Though limited as to what could be offered for my
“up to a grand” budget, the assistant was able to
contrast and compare the Ferrari ‘Colnago’ line and a
new European import label seemingly an exclusive of
Cycle King.
Comparing and contrasting the two, my helper was
strong on his spiel about build quality, understanding
that Colnago’s Italian-made frames were renowned in
design and finish, as well as pointing out carbon
seatstays on the hardtail and explaining how this
benefited the ride in jargon free language.
Perhaps the only let down was to leave feeling like I’d
done the sale part, speculating about when I would
return to buy, without any suggestion of deposit.
Otherwise, I can’t fault the knowledge and advice given
here on the day.
A SPECIALIST of family cycling with a penchant for
collecting retro and antique bicycles, Pedals is as
interesting as a museum as it is a bike shop.
It’s on the scruffier side, with a workshop invading the
shop floor slightly, but as such there’s presumably
always somebody at the door ready to serve, as was the
case on my visit.
Two staff were on hand, with one of the pair
explaining that with my brief he could order in a bike of
my choice inside seven days, if I knew what I wanted. I
quoted a few brands off the top of my head with a
mountain bike inside my price bracket, though the first
of these was ‘unobtainable’.
As the conversation progressed, the assistant
suggested that stock of a number of mountain bikes was
soon to be available and I’d best pop back in a week’s
time for a look. I’d hazard a guess that most would not
return, however, the assistant was strong in his emphasis
that his workshop would see a thorough safety check on
every build, something he said would perhaps be lacking
elsewhere.
BIKEBIZ.COM
Summary
TESTING THE worth of a non-specialist chain aside from
Halfords proved to be worthwhile on this occasion.
Though cycles presumably makes up no more than a
tenth of the business, Go Outdoors proved to be strong
on the customer service front, with staff incredibly proactive when meeting custom, despite being by far the
largest premises we’ve visited on our travels. Whether
or not every store is as strong remains to be seen.
There’s no taking the shine off the star store,
however, whose main merits on this occasion was an
enthusiasm and knowledge born from actually riding
and a knack of charming a customer to a brand, or
store. Transition was near faultless.

Going for gold
While the industry sits tight to see if London 2012 will inspire a
generation of cyclists, Jonathon Harker takes a look at the
events set to captivate the nation for the next few weeks…
THE WAIT for the London 2012 Olympics is
finally over. In a piece of fortuitous timing, the
games – running from July 27th to August 12th
– are taking place at a time when interest and
participation in cycling is enjoying a recent
high – and also at a time when cycle stars are
fully capable of winning plenty of medals for
Team GB.
While some trade pundits have been glum
about the forthcoming home turf Olympics
having an immediate impact on sales – many
saying sales will likely drop in the short term
while people are watching Hoy, Pendleton, et
all in action – it would take a remarkably
pessimistic head to imagine the games won’t
spark the imagination of the general public and
cycle fans alike.
It’s that legacy of London 2012 that will be
keenly in mind of the event’s organisers, media
and cycle trade alike. Beijing’s cycling successes
for Team GB were well publicised and have
been cited as drivers of growth and all
important interest among the public in cycling.
While cycle fans might be more focused on Le
Tour and the World Championships, the
Olympics doubtless has the kind of audience
threatened only by the World Cup.
Cycling’s 18 individual events get started on
Saturday July 28th with the men’s road race,
while the men’s cross-country race will be the
final cycle event at London 2012, taking place
on Sunday August 12th (see inset).
The BBC is the UK’s official broadcaster of
the Olympic Games, producing over 2,500
hours (or four months worth) of HD television
covering every sport, over 24 ‘Olympic
channels’ available across standard BBC
channels and the Red Button.

Want to grow your
bike shop business?
Wondering how your shop can get the most out of
EPOS? Citrus-Lime provides its take on the sector...
WHETHER YOU’RE exploring your EPOS
(electronic point of sale) options for the first
time or have an existing system beginning
to show its age and limitations, Citrus-Lime
can deliver a fully integrated multi-channel
solution that will dramatically change the
way shops run their businesses.
The Citrus-Lime system brings together
all of your channels into one unified stock
control system, including:
Retail
Workshop
Supplier Integration Module
Ecommerce
Integrated EBay Store
Integrated Amazon Store
Investment in a modern EPOS solution
is an essential step to allow bike shops to
grow and manage their businesses.
CITRUS-LIME
Since our first cycle industry tradeshow at
Core Bike 2009, Citrus-Lime has
32 BIKEBIZ AUGUST
established itself as one of the leading
EPOS and Ecommerce providers available
to UK Cycle Retailers. We currently look
after 100 cycle sites, ranging from
independent shops through to mediumsized chains.
Highlights from 2011/2012 include our
system rollout into many IBDs as well as
to Giant UK franchise stores, Chain
Reaction Cycles’ store in Belfast and also
with Cycles UK.
Citrus-Lime has continued to expand its
Support, Training and Account
Management positions recruiting from
within the cycle and outdoor industry. Our
goal is not only be able to help our
customers with the technology but also
be able to help with processes such as
stock aging and automating
replenishment.
EPOS
At the heart of the Citrus-Lime system is
arguably one of the best-supported, most
widely deployed and feature-rich EPOS
BIKEBIZ.COM
CHAIN REACTION
A decent EPOS system is
essential to allow bike shops
to grow and manage their
businesses, says Citrus-Lime
platforms available – Microsoft Dynamics
Retail Management System (RMS).
Not only does this core software have
great functionality for stock control,
customer special orders and a great
customer database, but it also enables
Citrus-Lime to build upon these features,
developing a range of solutions tailored to
the needs of Cycle Retailers including
software to manage your workshop and
integrate with your suppliers.
Supplier Integration Module (SIM) has
led the market in integrating EPOS
systems with supplier data. SIM boasts all
of the core data import tools you would
expect; enabling you to import all the key
product data to populate your own
system, run price updates and stock
checks through your system.
In addition to these features and
arguably SIM’s biggest strength, lies in its
extended Ecommerce features allowing
authorised dealers to display supply chain
stock availability for out of stock items.
This has dramatically boosted revenue for
many of our customers by securing these
sales as special orders, where they would
otherwise have been lost to a competitor.
Our list of available suppliers is constantly
growing. Check http://sim.citrusretail.com/ for an up-to-date list.
ECOMMERCE
Ecommerce (a transactional website) is
one of those steps that can be highly
BIKEBIZ.COM
profitable with the right tools. CitrusStore, our integrated Ecommerce platform,
provides a feature rich, versatile and userfriendly path into multi-channel retail.
We offer a full range of design and
hosting services to support your website,
alongside an extensive list of upgrades
which includes integration with eBay,
Amazon stores and Google Shopping.
Some recent additions to our product
catalogue include the integration of
MoneyWay’s Cycle Finance via Pay4Laters
paperless e-signature technology, enabling
the whole finance process to be
completed online.
CUSTOM BIKE BUILDER
July will see the release of our Custom

PressCamp 2012:new
products revealed to
captive media
Intimate and deliberately small, PressCamp is a chance
for boutique brands to get quality facetime with US
bike editors. Carlton Reid tags along.
THE FIRST PressCamp was held in Sun Valley,
Idaho. The second and third were staged in
Deer Valley resort, Park City, Utah. This year’s
fourth annual staging of the meet-the-press
schmoozefest was also held in Deer Valley.
Deer Valley is a ski and bike resort in the
Wasatch Range, located about 40 minutes east
of the international airport at Salt Lake City.
Down the hill from the plush resort is Park City,
a former mining town with a Main Street lined
with Victorian wooden houses that would have
once been miners’ cabins, but which now retail
for upwards of a millon dollars apiece.
The Sundance Film Festival is staged in Park
City each February. It’s an upscale town, with
dining to match. Close to town is the MidMountain Trail, a 20-mile MTB trail that starts
in Deer Valley, stays at about 8,000 feet and is
twisty, turny, swoopy and all the other sweet
singletrack adjectives you can think of.
Park City has 400 miles of mountain bike
trails. That’s worth repeating: 400 miles. Even
for a ski town which wants to suck up to
mountain bikers, that’s a lot. And the length
and quality of the trails is the reason Park City
is the one and only gold-level ‘ride center’ in
IMBA’s rankings.
The format of PressCamp is simple: host 25
or so influential bike editors and writers in a
luxe resort and make sure they book one-onone time with a select group of exhibitors
wishing to reveal details on their 2013 lines.
Journalists and industry types stay in the same
luxe condo, eat together and, most importantly,
ride together. Mornings are spent
photographing, taking notes and videoing;
afternoons are spent riding. It’s a tough life, but
somebody’s got to do it.

HERE ARE THE BRAND
HIGHLIGHTS
KNOG
The cult Oz brand was at PressCamp for the
first time. Oz founder Hugo Davidson said he
was blown away by the quality of the
journalists present (LA Times, Outside
magazine, Bicycling, you get the picture) and
was extremely happy with the online coverage
that started to appear during PressCamp itself.
Knog was showing its new products,
including the Milkman retractable cable lock;
the Kransky, part of the Sausage line of
silicone-covered shackle locks; and the USBcharged Blinder LED lights (demoed in the
condo presentation by being dropped into a
glass of water). Blinder 1 has one LED; Blinder 4
has, you guessed it, four.
Knog’s packaging is made of biodegradable
sugar cane pulp wrapped in recyclable PET
clear plastic. A new POP display holds 40
Blinder 4 lights.
HUTCHINSON
Naturally, the French-tyre-company-foundedby-an-American is keen to show off the latest
road tubeless tyres, now said to rival tubulars
for performance. The 23mm Galactik weighs
245 grams, less than a lightweight tyre and
tube and it’s claimed to have lower rolling
resistance than a standard tub. Plus, late into
650B, the company is now an evangelist,
offering three tyres in this old/new size.
ENVE
Aerodynamics consultant Simon Smart was
again at PressCamp for Enve. He was helping
the Utah composites company explain the
details on the SES 3.4, 6.7, and 8.9 clincher
wheels (not new) and Enve’s AM Tubeless
wheels, which are available in 26, 650B and 29inch diameters. I also learned that the YouTube
36 BIKEBIZ AUGUST
video of Smart that I shot at PressCamp last
year is used by Enve to explain the science
behind its wheels. http://youtu.be/nCu_rxlYhbg
GT
Long in the tooth trade types will remember
the GT Edge titanium road bike, a departure for
the BMX company. GT has reintroduced it, but
with new geometry, disc brakes and a
composite fork. The triple-triangle design stays.
There’s also a 29er ti version of the 1990s
Xizang hard-tail. GT has been sponsoring Hans
Rey for 25 years and to celebrate this has three
signature models, with part of the profits going
to Rey’s Wheels for Life charity.
“Hugo
Davidson
(Knog) said he
was blown
away to find
LA Times,
Outside mag
and Bicycling
journos at
press camp... ”
NINER
Standing for Steel is Real, the S.I.R 9 is a 29er
that might be made with a ‘heritage’ material
but the frame – with triple-butted Reynold’s
853 front triangle – has a whole slew of notheritage features, including 142/12mm Maxle
rear axle, and a through-axle rigid composite
fork. Niner has been able to bend the heattreated Reynolds 853 down tube, said to add
strength in the head tube junction. The bike’s
rear dropout features cast stainless steel inserts
that convert the bike from single speed to a
geared bike. According to Niner, the S.I.R 9 is a
‘quiver bike’: one of a stable of bikes for any
one owner.
SUGOI
Born 25 years ago, Sugoi is celebrating the fact
with a Silver Edition road clothing line, based
on the high-end RS road clothing line. Sugoi
reps were also keen to point out the RSE line
gets a new three-layer, Italian chamois that’s
not made from moulded foam but has been
CNC-machined with a graduated edge. Sugoi’s
MTB lines now have the X suffix. The RSX
jersey will feature Icefil fabric and this is said
to be similar to a menthol rub, and can cool a
hot rider.
GORE BIKEWEAR
Integration. Integration. Integration. That’s the
long-held mantra from Gore Bikewear. Items
work as part of a system: jersey shoulder
seams won’t snag on a matching jackets; arm
lengths differ so there’s no overlap.
The new Active Shell fabric is a windproof
packable material that is said to be 50 percent
lighter than the company’s previous Pack Light
fabric.
The Alpe Cross is a high-end drop-tail MTB
jacket with shoulder stretch panels designed
for use with a hydration pack.
SHEBEEST
Ex downhill pro Jill Hamilton, formerly brand
manager at Haro, was at PressCamp to help
relaunch Shebeest, the women-specific
clothing brand that ceased production some
years ago, but has now been resurrected by
LeeMarc Industries, the company behind Canari
Cyclewear.
Shebeest was founded by Claudia Ried, a
New York fashion designer who was restyling
Wrangler jeans when she realised cycle
clothing didn’t offer the same women and
bike-friendly fit. Shebeest became an instant
favourite with US women and Ried later sold
the business. In new hands the brands
withered. Now with Canari as the owner the
brand is being resurrected. Ried is a consultant
on the brand relaunch but doesn’t have any
equity in the company.
Playing on the name, Shebeest garment
feature some animal prints. The ‘S’ curve in the
Shebeest logo is based upon the curvy female
cut of jerseys. The new Sheebeest line is due in
Spring 2013.

Easy is launching two new products
to the trade – the Ecobike Adventure
and the Mobiky folding electric bikes.
The full-size Ecobike Adventure
sports bike delivers a 45-mile range
on a single charge and sports a high
torque hub motor and lithium ion
battery, which is incorporated into
the frame. The Adventure also uses a
Shimano Tourney Mechs system, so
riders retain control and pedal
response with the option of electric
assistance.
The Adventure spent years in
development with a Spanish
manufacturer working with the
Catalonia University in Barcelona.
Exclusively available via Cycling
Made Easy, the Adventure retails at
£1,699.
Cycling Made Easy’s Ray Wookey
said: “We are seeing a massive
increase in sales and many people are
beginning to understand the
economic benefits of using an electric
bike. Of course there are known e
bike markets such as motor homers
and people with caravans, but
increasingly we are seeing younger,
more style-conscious people wanting
to enhance their lifestyle, commute
with ease, minimise their travel
expenditure – and have fun.”

Cycling Made Easy has also been
appointed exclusive UK distributor for
the Mobiky folding e-bike.
Manufactured in Normandy, the
Mobiky rolls on its own wheels while
folded, sports a lithium ion battery
and has a ten to 15 mile reach.
Worldwide patents protect the bike,
Cycling Made Easy said, and the bike
retails for £1,299. It is also available
with a larger 11 Amp hr battery
which doubles the distance on a
single charge.
Lights, leather saddle and side
stand are all included as standard
with the Mobiky.
Wookey said of the electric folder:
“We are excited by this special
product in that its flexibility means it
has so many applications.
“Naturally it is great for
commuters or people wanting travel
freedom from train travel but it can
also be used by car owners wanting
to minimise the storage space for a
bike on holiday or weekends away.”

ELECTRIC BIKES
PowaCycle: “The way people use
e-bikes in the UK is different...”
PowaCycle’s managing director Wazz Mughal talks to BikeBiz about
the limitations of the market, why moving the technology forward
can be a slow process and much more…
Performance
e-bikes
Powered by
Retail - £1699 to £2799
Left: Powacycle’s Rio,
Right: The Prague
YOU RECENTLY told BikeBiz that
the UK e-bike market spend is
capped at around £1,500 to £2,000
– why do you think this is?
There does seem to be a block on
people spending more than around
£1,500 – £2,000 on an electric
bicycle. My thoughts on this are that
the people who would spend more
than this on a bicycle are pure cycling
enthusiasts. These cycle enthusiasts
do not buy electric bicycles.
The way people use bicycles in the
UK is very different to the way people
in other European countries use them,
which is perhaps why the amount
that people are prepared to spend on
a bicycle in the UK is less.
What are the biggest challenges
facing the UK electric market?
The biggest challenge facing the UK
electric bicycle market at the moment
is still the same in my view and that
is making people aware of what an
electric bicycle is and how they can
save you money. As the cost of
transport is increasing, electric
bicycles really are becoming an
alternate mode of transportation, as
opposed to a leisure pursuit luxury.
You’re now selling product abroad –
which territories are you focusing
on and how are they doing?
We have been selling large quantities
of our high-end Infineum branded
bikes into Holland. Our PowaCycle
and Infineum brands are also starting
to appear more in the Czech Republic.
We are also looking into other
territories and are in discussions with
various potential distributors.
Do you foresee any improvements
in battery technology and thus the
range of bikes in future? And are
reductions on the base price of
batteries in sight yet?
Battery technology is something that
45 BIKEBIZ AUGUST
bought out two new models, the Riga
and Prague. These bikes feature new
frame designs giving a new look and
also displays on the handlebars. We
are anticipating these bikes to sell
very well in the UK.
On the Infineum we have a new
gents model available, and we are
looking into bringing in a couple of
cheaper models that still utilise the
patented stackable battery tech.
“Battery technology
is continuously
looked at. There are
better power to
weight ratios, but
they’re just not cost
effective”
Wazz Mughal,
PowaCycle
is continuously being looked at. There
are other technologies available that
have better power to weight ratios,
however the cost makes them not
commercially viable at the moment.
Perhaps as these technologies become
more known and used with the
resultant cost drop in manufacturing
they may appear in electric bicycles.
The price of batteries in the current
chemistries I do not see coming down
in the foreseeable future. This is due
to the cost of materials, labour
involved in manufacturing and of
course the rate of inflation not just in
our own country, but also in the
countries where the batteries are
produced.
What improvements have you
worked into both the PowaCycle
and Infineum lines in the new line?
On the PowaCycle range we have
Has the demographic of who buys
an e-bike changed at all, either at
home or abroad?
In the last few years, the demographic
in our opinion has not shifted much.
Why should dealers who have so
far been reluctant to commit to
electrics now commit?
It gives the dealers another product
they can sell and servicing is not very
different to that of a normal bicycle.
The only difference is there are a few
modular electrical components that
are very easy to replace.
We do not have minimum order
quantities for dealers so I would
encourage them all to get in touch
with us and discuss the benefits and
opportunities that they could enjoy
by selling electric bicycles.
What improvements to a bike’s
technology do you foresee coming
in the next five years?
I think over the next few years we
may see some changes in battery
technology. I would also expect
electric bicycles to look even more
like normal bicycles than they already
do, with the additional components
that electrify them being disguised
more and in novel ways.

BIKE SECURE
All Cybertill retailers
have now been invited
to register customer’s
bikes during a sale
Secure your customer’s bike
Bike crime blights the industry and can deter potential customers, so a new initiative that registers a
bike at point of sale – effectively giving the bike a log book – has been developed. Jonathon Harker
interviews ex-Met cop Paul Troughton, the brain behind BikeSecure…
YOU’VE GOT a unique perspective on bike
crime, because I believe you were in the
police force yourself?
Yes, I was in the Met and my time there
highlighted some of the issues around bike
crime. I am a keen cyclist myself and I race for
the Wheelbase shop team and it just kind of
came about when I was working in the Met.
The Sergeant that I worked under was in
charge of one of the cycle teams for the
borough and we’d done partnership days – like
on a Sky Ride where you’ve got the gazebos up
and you do the protective marking schemes.
I’m not knocking those schemes – they’re
always helpful for repatriating goods.
But what we were finding on the bike
products was that you get any Joe Bloggs
coming up to you saying they wanted to mark
their bike. It creates a nightmare when
someone falsely registers them.
One thing that came back is that the Police
National Databank is good for some things,
but unfortunately for verifying lawful
ownership of bikes it just wasn’t helpful, really.
So the idea was born out of that. I sat down
and had a think about how best it could be
done and what existing schemes are out there
and came up with the BikeSecure product.
“We’ve all
bought
products and
thrown the
warranty card
in a drawer.
This system
takes registers
automatically.”
And the main unique selling point is that
the bike is registered at the point of
purchase, so it can’t be falsely registered
after its been stolen?
Exactly. One point against it is that someone
who has a nice bike at the moment can’t
register it, so we’re working on a plan to do a
retro-registration, but that has to be done
securely, obviously. The USP of BikeSecure is
that it is done at POS, but it’s also that it’s all
done for the customer. We’ve all done it, been
to Comet, or a similar store and bought
something like a microwave – you get the
warranty cards and you just don’t send them
off. They just get thrown in a drawer and left.
So one thing we wanted to do was to take
that out of the customer’s hands and register
the bike automatically.
That was where Toby [Dalton, Cybertill
director] came into it and why we teamed up
with Cybertill. It comes straight from the POS
and if the BikeSecure product is opted into,
Cybertill do a sweep at the end of the day so
any product sold with the BikeSecure option
gets picked up and sent across to our
database.
And how long has it been running now?
It has been running for just six months.
Wheelbase has been the test bed for it and has
46 BIKEBIZ AUGUST
been really helpful. We’ve got all the bugs out
of the system and it’s now running brilliantly. A
letter has now gone out to all the shops that
use Cybertill’s system informing them of the
product, so we’re rolling it out.
In an ideal world the system will be running
with most bike shops?
That’s the long-term aim, yes. I’d like to see
every new bike sold in the UK registered on
our secure database.
I’ve lived in London and I’ve raced, and it
feels like pretty much everyone in London has
had a bike nicked somewhere down the line.
It’s an issue for bike shops as well: One of the
guys told me that they lose out through sales
from people that say they’re not going to buy
another £1,000 bike to ride to work on
because it’s going to get nicked a few months
down the line. So yes, for me I’d love to see it
rolled out. I don’t see the mentality of
spending thousands of pounds on a bike and
having no history to it.
One of the other benefits of it is that if you
want to sell your bike in the local paper, or
online, if you can verify the history of the bike
you will gain extra revenue.
We’ve all been on some online marketplace
auction sites and seen some questionable
bikes. If you make the product harder to sell
after it’s stolen then you hit the ‘nickability’ of
it. If you can’t sell it, nobody will want to nick
it in the first place.
You can transfer ownership of the bike using
BikeSecure and the name stays with the bike.
I’ve got six bikes on the site of my own. You
can interact with it too. If you buy a new set
of wheels, say, you can update the entry.

YOUR shop, YOUR brand, YOUR gift card!
Always on the lookout for ways members can increase sales, reduce overheads and promote their own
brand and business, ActSmart gives the lowdown on The Experts gift cards and introduces its No
Service Fee promotion, available now to UK bike dealers...
THE UK gift card market is booming, with 11.8
per cent growth in the first quarter of 2012
and a market that is reportedly worth around
£4bn per annum. Many of the UK’s major
retailers already reap the rewards of prepaid
gift cards, and with consumer demand on the

gift value sold) is it time you considered them

likes of British Cycling and Sustrans.
The Experts’ gift cards programme enables
retailers to put their own brand and business
details in front of consumers – both new and

and most importantly, what you do.
When a recipient receives a gift card with
your shop details and branding on it, not only
will they (more than likely) visit your shop, but
they will have recognised your brand and what
you do. Then it’s about
engaging with them
and building trust so

49 per cent of gift card

Action and adventure mag Coven hits the newsstands
Magazine – pitched at women – features mix of sports and hits second issue in July
By Jonathon Harker
A NEW female-focused magazine named
Coven has launched in the market,
covering ‘action, art and adventure’.
Already distributed via cycle retailers
and cafes including Look Mum No Hands
and Kye Forte’s Pro cycle Centre – as well
as outlets like the Design Museum,
Magma and clothing stores – Coven
features a wide array of sports, including
cycling and snow sports.
Coven founder Juliett Elliott told
BikeBiz that she has firm plans to grow
the fledgling mag, the second edition of
which hit the market in July.
“My ambition is to build the magazine
into a bigger and better publication, with
bigger budgets for shoots and travel and
there access to more athletes.
“So far we’ve been lucky to work with
some amazing brands, and we want to
keep delivering for both our advertisers
and our readers.”
Issue one contained a strong bike focus,
but Elliott explained she’s striving to
feature a consistent combination of sports.
54 BIKEBIZ AUGUST
“Each issue aims to have a variety of
sports, artists and photography. Although
I’m careful not to overdo the bikes as I
would like a strong mix of sports, with
there being so many different kinds of
riding which interest people, a lot does
end up in there.”
The creation of Coven came about
from a dissatisfaction with the lack of
titles aimed at her demographic, Elliott
told BikeBiz: “I decided to launch Coven as
I felt frustrated at the lack of quality
publications for women like myself, and I
guess I just realised that if I wanted to do
something about that, I was in a really
strong position to do so. The more people I
spoke to, the more it confirmed my belief
that there was a market for what I was
planning.”
Elliott added: “There are a lot of
women out there who like inspiring
stories, quality products and travel pieces
pegged at the women who like a little
comfort and have money to spend.”

ANTIDOTE SOLUTIONS
Bernard and Guiral
aspire to see more bikes
made in Europe
The French connection
Antidote Solutions has engineered bike designs for Sunn, Caribou and Formula, among others, for the
past two years. Jonathon Harker speaks to the French duo behind the young company...
ANTIDOTE SOLUTIONS, based in the South of
France close to the Pyrenees, was founded by
cyclists Frederic Bernard and Alexandre Guiral
two years ago. Both worked as product engineers
for Sunn, which currently outsources all of its
product development activity to the company.
Antidote’s portfolio has developed in a short
space of time and the duo has worked French,
Italian, Dutch, Taiwanese, and Andorran bike
brands and in virtually every sector from road
to MTB, BMX and – increasingly – e-bikes. In
Antidote’s own words, it operates ‘in the
intersection between manufacturers, subcontractors and consumer’. Bernard and Guiral
tell BikeBiz about their frustration at the lack of
scientific testing in the industry compared with
the motor sector and their dream of seeing an
increase in European bicycle manufacture...
How did you come to form the company?
We had many discussions about working
independently, and two years ago launched
Antidotes Solutions. We had this dream of
creating a company right in the middle of the
industry with strong links to manufacturers,
sub-contractors and riders.
We have both worked as product engineers,
as well as product managers, since graduating
from engineering school ten and 15 years ago,
respectively. In our current work we offer a
combination of the two skill sets.
So engineering is part of a wider service you
provide to brands? Yes; we also provide other services to our
clients, in the areas of sourcing, design and
development. For example, the very first thing
we did was to develop a Data Acquisition Tool,
which we have used extensively ever since.
Some of our clients purchase the tool itself,
others buy research from us.
BIKEBIZ.COM
We don’t claim to have invented sliced
bread, but we do find that there is too little
scientific testing in the industry, compared to
the motor sport industry, for example. Our tool
can be used to various ends; performance
enhancement in general; or very specific
improvements on brakes, suspensions etc. We
have a lot of demand for this service, and to
give a recent example: Cole used it to prove that
their wheels had an excellent lateral rigidity.
“Engineering
requests are
mostly very
vague with no
clear idea why,
for whom and
how the bike
will be used.”
Which bike brands have you worked with? We have worked with a large number of brands
from around the world – French, Italian, Dutch,
Taiwanese, and Andorran. Our relationship with
our former employer Sunn is still very strong –
they currently outsource all of their product
development activity to us. For each of our
customers we first develop a strong
understanding of their brand values, to be able
to offer products that reinforce the image they
wish to project. For one it could be fun,
energetic and playful, for another we focus on
competitive performance, and for a third it will
be all about sleek design.
What's the most important development in
bicycle engineering in the last two years? Well, you have the trend of ‘big wheels’ which
has radically changed the industry, providing
interesting challenges to bicycle conception,
and a need for brands to review product lines.
But the single most interesting development
is definitely the e-bike. It opens up a whole
new market, targeting people with no previous
‘bicycle-culture’, and competes with
established means of transportation, such as
mobilettes, scooters and even cars.
We find this area very exciting, as there are
so many things still to be done – we see
phenomenal development opportunity. For
example, the market currently seems to be
segmented according to price, not taking into
consideration the practise type. Engineering
requests are mostly very vague with no clear
idea of why, for whom and how the bike will
be used. Today only a few brands, such as
Moustache, have grasped the possibilities, but
in a few years the market will surely be abound
with different types of e-bikes, tailor-made for
different occasions: commuting, utilitarian,
mountain bikes, urban bikes. Already, 40 per
cent of our turnover stems from this segment
and we expect it to increase over time.
Where do you see bike design heading in
the future? New materials? Lighter frames? Our motto is ‘The right material in the right
place’. In other words, we are not unconditional
fans of carbon fibre. For World Cup racing it’s
perfect, but your average weekend mountain
biker may not be best served by the vulnerable
carbon fibre frames. Also, it’s not very
‘democratic’ as it increases the consumer price,
nor is it easy to recycle. Look at an airplane – it
is made up of all kinds of different materials to
form an optimal whole. So we are all for usage
of steel, aluminium, titan, carbon fibre – each
material has its place and function.
Any final thoughts on the future of bicycle
design and manufacture?
We’d like to see a bike manufactured locally –
close to the European user. The region we live
in – Midi-Pyrenees in the South of France – is
the home to many important companies in the
aeronautics industry, and we are actively working
with some of the local contract manufacturers
to develop an industrial tool that can
manufacture bicycle frames. The competency is
there, it is just a question of time.

RETAIL ONLY
The trade’s guide to sourcing stock, up-and-coming IBDs and the very latest products
RETAIL
COMMENT
I’VE READ a number of articles this month on the subject of
marketing to non-enthusiasts. On the face of it, the bicycle
industry seems to be wary of reaching out beyond the
comfort zone of enthusiasts.
At a retail level and with minimal spend to be had on
placing adverts, banking one-time customer’s details on clever
EPoS and utilising social media platforms may seem like the
only way to progress. However, as many will have found, both
require perseverance to gain any ground.
If retail and the wider industry doesn’t make further
progress in luring in the masses to two wheel travel, my
conclusion has to be that the consumers will continue to
browse within their comfort zone – which means one thing,
shopping convenience. Most large towns now have retail parks,
often found on the main artery roads into town.
“I’d like to hear from the trade on how
you entice non-bike-savvy types to
take up two wheel travel...”
If you follow the antics of BikeBiz’s Mystery Shopper, you’ll
have seen by now occasional reports of chains challenging the
notion that personal, or in fact qualified and competent
service, is exclusive to the specialist independents.
Just this month, the review of Go Outdoors, an outsider... in
the bike business, suggested on many levels that, with the
right staff and equipment in store, sales to a non-savvy, but
curious shopper can be as simple as listening to the customer,
being polite and sounding like you know what you’re talking
about. I suspect that when we eventually stumble across the
expanding Decathlon network that the reputation the firm has
in mainland Europe may prove dangerous, not only to small
stores, but perhaps even to the likes of Halfords.
To put it into context, if I were to suddenly develop an
interest in fishing, for example, convenience would place me
back in Go Outdoors, simply because I’ve no idea where my
local independent is found. I’d probably check Amazon too, but
that’s another kettle of fish altogether.
Before I have a stab at a solution, I’d be interested to hear
from the trade on the best methods to entice non cyclists in
store, so don’t be shy, get in touch.
The DIY approach and one which I know to work in other
professions, is the old fashioned leaflet drop. With no shortage
of bikes sat in sheds waiting for a sunny day rush on the
nation’s workshops, perhaps it’s time to beat the Jet Stream’s
journey back north and get those customers flowing in evenly,
as opposed to a mad rush as the mercury rises.
It wasn’t so long ago that Raleigh ran national newspaper
advertising promoting its 100-plus Cyclelife stores. Perhaps
other large labels could consider supporting their dealer
network in this way?

Rolling through the decades

Email: [email protected]
Ben Haywards is one of just a few cycle stores now in the century club. Combine that with the fact that
the store, to this day, stands in strong stead despite massive local competition and you’ve got to
conclude they’re doing something right. Mark Sutton finds out more from current owner Rob Turner…
What’s the secret to your longevity?
Good customer service, which can only be
achieved with the right product mix and
experienced loyal staff.
Looking back, what’s presented the greatest
challenge to the business? Pressure from the internet. We are very much a
local shop, trying to offer relevant cycling
equipment at a fair price for our market. The
diversity of equipment now available online,
reviewed by the world and his wife, seems to look
more attractive than our offer, and of course
there is always a bargain out there somewhere.
Any stories from the vaults worth sharing?
The impact of the Moulton bicycle on Cambridge
in the 60’s. The style, engineering and break from
traditional design really appealed to the
Cambridge market, resulting in a boom in interest
and sales. The great and the good all seemed to
ride a Moulton. The enduring image I have is of a
chap in tweeds, his bike piled high with boxes
riding back and forth, puffing at his pipe. He was
moving house on his Moulton Deluxe, took all
day, but mission accomplished by twilight.
To the present day, what does an independent
have to do to turn profit and retain custom?
Concentrate on fairly unique services we can
offer – bike fitting, shoebeds, cleat fitting, cycle
62 BIKEBIZ AUGUST
servicing, mobile mechanics, education, but at the
same time stay fresh on the retail side.
You’ve an offsite and out of town workshop –
is this a growing part of your trade?
Cambridge has expensive parking and much
congestion, this was starting to impact on footfall
and limit growth. We are fortunate to have a
large cycle commuter clientele, so it’s important
to keep a city centre presence, even though high
rents make larger premises impossible.
An out of town shop became imperative. With
free parking, larger display, workshop and storage
areas, easy access to test riding routes and more
time, we could offer something different to our
main shop. In these times of austerity, we have
seen more growth in our rural location.
Do anything special to celebrate the big 100?
A Rollapaluza party, a really great celebration,
based at an open day with lots of competitions,
offers, archives and a barbeque. The Fold a
Brompton competition was very popular, while a
display of a Golden Sunbeam sold to the Mayor of
Cambridge in 1912 and an Moulton Safari bike
from the ‘60s proved a point of interest.
Describe the typical Cambridge customer:
We’ve a large utility cycling population in
Cambridge and the daily commuter makes up the
majority of our customers. Students are obviously
“Continued
growth of the
cycling network
certainly gives
confidence to
newcomer
cyclists...”
Rob Turner, MD,
Ben Haywards
a large part of our city centre business. Getting
around the Uni is near impossible without a bike.
There’s also a growing leisure and exercise trade.
To what extent has improved cycling
infrastructure in Cambridge helped business?
Continued growth of the cycle network certainly
gives confidence to new cycle users. Interestingly,
a new guided bus route in from the north of
Cambridge has had greatest success in also
offering a safe bike route in from outlying villages.
You’ve some strong competition locally – how
have you retained and built custom as rivals
have popped up?
Our phone book lists over 30 bike shops with
Cambridge numbers, so our business does have to
stand up to strong local independent
competition, as well as from the multiples.
Trying to keep an individual character and the
trust of our customers is vital. A strong web
presence is also crucial – many customers shop
online, or research on the web pre-purchase.
We remain adamant that bikes should not be
sold in a box. Any rider needs the support of a
local expert to give advice, assemble, customise
and service their machine. A particular bugbear is
bikes from insurance companies; rarely do
customers seem to get an appropriate bike, one
that is properly serviced, or any type of a good
deal – shame on them.

LIGHTS AND REFLECTIVE CLOTHING
Silva
Spiro
THE NEW range of lights
officially launch in the
autumn, but have already had
an outing – the Silva and
Singletrack at Mountain
Mayhem in June. The Singletrack (1030
Lumens) is pitched as rugged
and uncompromising,
providing those
aforementioned 1030 lumens
as well as long-lasting
battery. It uses Silva’s unique Intelligent
Light System – which creates a
‘triangle’ of light which is wider at the
bottom, helping the rider see more
while minimising light ‘bounce’ from
higher objects like leaves, whether
mounted on a helmet or handlebar.
Available now, it retails at £299.00.
The Velo (110 Lumens) is Silva’s new
offering for road and commuters. The
waterproof light can cope with rain,
SPIRO’S DASH Training Shirt is
available for a number of outdoors
activities, not least cycling, with RRPs
ranging from £14.50 to £15.50. The
breathable and lightweight garments
feature Cool-Dry performance fabric
with added moisture fast wicking
control to keep skin cool. Contour fit
panels with reflective piping provide
added visibility.
Spiro’s Micro-Lite Team Jacket (£28)
is water repellent, wind resistant,
breathable, lightweight and quick
drying. Again made from Cool-Dry
fabric, UV protection is also offered by
the jacket.
The range also features the Sprint
Training Shorts (£20). These soft, nonrestrictive, four-way Z-Tech stretch
shorts guarantee maximum freedom
of movement. The lightweight,
breathable, quick drying fabric gives
optimal muscle support and when

the road ahead without weighing
cyclists down. The compact unit runs
on standard AAA batteries and can also
work as a red rear light in emergencies

MOUNTAIN BIKES
Man of the mountain?
With the revelation that some shops are now ordering more 29ers than they are
26-inch bikes, the MTB market is in for a shake up. Mark Sutton talks to the
distributors specialising in off-road gear about their hot new product…
Avocet Sports
AVOCET’S CLEVER online ‘find a bike’
calculator says that the distributor has
118 different pure-bred mountain bikes
in its catalogue, from brands such as
Whistle, Coyote and Reflex.
Coyote’s catalogue is one of many to
embrace the popularity of the 29er,
bringing four models to market, spanning
£399 to £649. There are also a collection
of six 26-inch bikes beginning at just
£209 and topping out at £425.
One of the new 29ers is the Turnpike,
a 27-speed gents model, retailing at
£499. Specced with Suntour XCT
suspension forks, complete with lockout
and 100mm travel, as well as a Truvativ
triple chainset, the bike is built robust
where it matters and it comes with Tioga
tyres and Shimano mechanical discs,
to boot.

Roll up, roll up…
This month BikeBiz discovers an essential garment for
deflecting city fumes, a new way to weave carbon for an
optimal strength-to-weight ratio and much more...
Respro Cinqro face mask
Madison: 0208 385 3385
JOINING THE Respro catalogue this month and
Madison’s catalogue shortly is the Cinqro mask.
Protecting the rider from airborne particles known to
cause breathing difficulties, the unit includes two
optional filters and has upgraded exhalation valve
mouldings that allow heat and water vapour out to
enable easier breathing during strenuous activity. The
mask’s outer cover is constructed from sports
Neoprene with an overlaid metallic skin in four colours
with Limited Edition red, white and blue graphics.
Respro MD and mask inventor Harry Cole
comments: “A vast number of people exercise outside
daily in any city and probably a larger percentage
commute to work by bike. This consistent daily
exposure to urban pollution such as airborne
particulate matter, including black carbon soot
particles, diesel dust, un-burnt fuel vapours or acid
gases is enough to cause breathing difficulties ranging
from an irritating cough to more serious chest
conditions like exercise induced asthma.”

NEW AND exclusive to Walkers Cycles is pocket
money BMX components brand Evoke. With stock
already at the distributor’s HQ, dealers now have
access to 16 different components, all available in
black, white, blue, red, purple or gold.
Various chromoly handlebar dimensions and

two width options.
A number of pedals will be on offer for riders on a
budget, including transparent plastic pedals
particularly popular with those customising their
bikes.
You’ll also find pivotal style seat and seat posts,
machined lightweight stems, a half link chain,
tensioners, an aluminium u-brake and a number of
brake pad and grips to choose from, again in a
variety of colours.
DESIGNED TO withstand the punishment of some of
the world’s bravest street riders, United’s new Nash
two-piece crank is Nathan William’s signature model.
United says of the cranks: “The design has been
kept slim, clean and simple to create classic looking
arms without any fancy gimmicks, but it’s what’s on
the inside that counts. By hollowing out the 22mm
spindle as much as possible and creating arms with a
shape to offer greater bend resistance and strength,
we have made a set of cranks Nathan is proud to put
his name to.”
As a final touch, all cranks are supplied with an
installation/removal tool and a small sachet of
grease, which make fitting them a breeze.
SET FOR introduction at Eurobike, Pro will reveal a new
disc wheel boasting a few industry firsts. The TexTreme
wheel uses a unique carbon technology that is new to
cycling. By spreading the carbon fibre yarns into tapes
and arranging them in the woven structure in the
straightest orientation possible, both in and out of the
plane, the fibre properties can be exploited most
effectively for carrying tensile and compressive loads. This
creates an optimal strength-to-weight ratio and is a new
way of working with carbon.
The sub-1kg wheels measure 24mm wide and the
woven Spread Tow structure from the TeXtreme
Technology provides a superior surface smoothness.
Another unique aspect of this wheel is the pressurized
oven used to create a one-piece monocoque
construction, as opposed to two half shells bonded.
The PRO TeXtreme disc wheel will be available within a
complete disc line up on Shimano Ultegra and Dura-Ace
level. The wheel will be assembled with an 11-speed
Dura-Ace hub, but it is 10-speed compatible. A
protective wheel bag and a valve adapter are included.

Transition Carbon Covert
Surf Sales: 01303 850553
THE 2013 carbon Covert is Transition’s first fullsuspension carbon frame, designed and built from the
ground up and inspired by Italian super cars.
The Covert is the first bike on the market to offer
what Transition call “C.O.C.K. and B.A.L.L.S”
technology (the wags). The ‘Completely Optimized
Carbon Kinetics’ utilized in production of the carbon
structure are an industry first; only available on
Transition Bikes. The ‘Basically Aligned Linear Leverage
System’ suspension works with the shock making the
suspension incredibly easy to tune; once again, only
available on Transition Bikes.
Working in conjunction with the B.A.L.L.S.
suspension system, the 2013 Carbon Covert features a
longer 8.5” x 2.5” custom tuned Fox CTD Adjust rear
shock. The longer shock helps contribute to improved
suspension performance and easier shock setup for
riders of any size. The rear travel has been increased
from 150mm to 160mm further expanding the
performance. For riders looking for ultimate downhill
performance, an optional Fox RC4 coil shock is available.
The B.A.L.L.S. suspension system uses a higher main
pivot placement for improved pedaling performance
with modern 2x10 and 1x10 drivetrain setups.

Rock Shox Reverb updates
Cube: 01905 798692
Windwave: 02392 505320
Fisher Outdoors: 01727 798345
BIKE MANUFACTURING giant Cube has revealed two
off-road rigs that it's particularly excited about in the
2013 line up.
These are the Elite Super HPC 29 with optimised
carbon construction and AMS 100 HPC Super 29 –
both based around Cube's Agile Ride Geometry. The
bottom bracket height on these 29ers sits at the
same level as 26-inch counterparts, providing a more
planted ride. The special (patent pending) positioning
of the front derailleur delivers performance
advantages and gives more tyre clearance. Also this
offers the possibility to shorten the chainstays for
quicker handling. The derailleur mount position also
means that the seat tube doesn't need to be bent or
offset from the bottom bracket shell, so every frame
size shows the identical seat angle.
Ideal for marathon races, the AMS 100 HPC
weighs in at less than 10 kg, much thanks to all
bearing seats and the linkage plates being made of
full carbon.
HAVING PERFORMED well in magazine tests
worldwide, BBB’s minitool line is now available to
bike dealers.
The MicroFold XXL, which scored ‘best in test’ in a
What Mountain Bike magazine analysis, is a rubber
coated aluminium unit that’s both comfortable to
use even under leverage and houses 20 tools. Hex
keys from 2mm to 8mm are carried, among other
common Torx and t25 wrenches. You’ll also find a
chain tool, tyre levers, spoke wrenches and much
more – incredible value for a sub £20 multitool.
BBB also has a smaller unit dubbed the MaxiFold
L, again sporting an aluminium case. 14 functions
nearly cover all small repairs likely to occur during
rides. A dual sided hex key bolt prevents the tool
from separating when being used.
ROCK SHOX’S popular on-the-fly adjustable seat

diameter, as well as a Stealth 150mm travel model.
Further to these two additions, there are now
accessories to fine-tune your Reverb.

through the frame by featuring a hose exit point
from the bottom of the post.

BSOs: Change the law
Bikes in boxes should be given a full PDI and follow up,
but can a law enforcing those that set bikes up are
trained make BSOs safer? asks one BikeBiz reader…
Dear BikeBiz
As a small IBD, we’re growing increasing
alarmed at the quality of some bikes we see
come into the shop – mainly those that are
sold by High Street catalogue stores and
supermarkets.
In many cases the bikes barely meet
standards, but what causes greater alarm is
that they are sold in boxes.
I would not sell any bike without a full predelivery inspection and follow up. How can
anyone get away without doing something as
basic as that?
It should be made part of law that everyone
has trained staff to at least Cytech level 1, but
preferably level 2, and that all bike get a predelivery inspection and setup.
If that happened then there would be less
poor quality bikes on the streets and maybe us
IDBs might get fair prices for what we’ll sell.
But more importantly that that, it will stop
this disposable bike culture that is occurring
and reduce the number of unsafe, substandard
bikes that are being sold to the un-educated
general public.
I’d like to see a change in the law. I feel very
strongly about this matter and would like to
hear the trade’s thoughts on the problem.
Could we collectively push for a change to
legislation to prevent bikes from leaving stores
without a detailed and qualified assessment of
its safety for use on the roads?

What’s stopping the
trade pushing for safety
legislation relating to
building bikes?

THE BIBLE
IS BACK!
80 BIKEBIZ AUGUST
DMR is rumoured to have some very
fresh goods to launch at Eurobike –
can you let us in on what these are?
Yep, lots going on and DMR is going to
have a bumper crop for dealers to get
stuck into for 2013.
We’ll not release product names and
details just yet, but the new DMR web
site will be up before Eurobike. All the
new stuff will be on show there, then
in the UK at Cycle NEC toward the end
of September.
Key new lines include an entry level
pump track bike, making DMR more
accessible to a wider audience. There’s
a new mid-price point dirt jump frame
to sit below the world renowned 898
frame. Further to that, we’ve a revised
Bolt frame, designed for bigger riders
landing soon. To top it all off, there’s a
host of accessory revisions.
Tell us about your increased
participation and sponsorship in
pump track events:
We love pump tracks. They are
springing up all over the place and
often have council backing or funding.
Pump tracks are a great way to
increase skill and have a bunch of fun
with mates. We want to promote that
and raise attention via the race series.
Last year was the first DMR Pump
Track Challenge series promoted by
Chris Roberts and Naked Racing. That
series is to run at both the Cycle Show
in September and the London Bike
Show in January will have indoor events
on the Shoretrax wooden pump track.
With a new bike launch in this
category, DMR is putting it’s bit into
the sport as always.
Is the Vault pedal standing up to the
legendary v8/v12 pedal in popularity?
Vault’s success has been runaway since
the start, it’s winning awards all over,
including Dirt 100 inclusion. The v8 and
v12 are both still big sellers, as Vaults
are expensive by comparison and in the
case of dirt jumpers like Sam Reynolds,
the small platform of the v12 is far
better suited.
Among many famous riders on
Vaults are Richard Cunynghame in the
Gravity Enduro scene and in downhill,
Brendan Fairclough and our own
Bernard Kerr.
You’ve a new employee on DMR –
tell us about him:
Olly Wilkins has been a member of the
DMR Dirt Jump team for nine years
now – that’s a lot of scuffed knees. But
Olly is also a talented graphic designer
and has a very good head for what is
needed on the bikes he rides.
Upgrade is growing at a rate of
knots and the DMR brand needed more
man hours, so we have welcomed Olly
as a full time employee. However, we
are not stopping Olly doing what he
does best, riding a bike with his
recognisable extreme style – this is
part of his job, we love the videos and
social media he creates too.
In the first few weeks at Upgrade he
rode a “wall of death”, was
commissioned by Vital MTB for a video,
has helped on the creation on new
product lines and is closely involved
with the new DMR web site, due to
launch at just before Eurobike.
Olly aside, who else will be
representing the brand this year?
We headline with our dirt jump team
riders: Ray Samson, Jimmy Pratt and
Clinton Johns. These riders all feature
heavily in our ad campaigns this year.
What feedback are dirt riders giving
you at present? What’s trending?
Slacker, wider, lighter, stronger, grippier.

statistical
How many inner tubes does an IBD sell every year? Is the number
of those cycling at least once a week on the increase? How well did
the good people of Greater Manchester do in the recent Cycle
Challenge? All these questions are answered here, together with
some number crunching from the Government…
£15m
David Gaule,
Retail Consultant & Trainer,
Citrus-Lime
Transport Ministers Norman Baker and Mike Penning pledged £15m,
via the Department for Transport, for local authorities to tackle
dangerous junctions for cyclists.
What bikes do you own? I’ve just finished building a Nukeproof Mega, I have a Genesis
Alpitude and an old Wethepeople Addict. My dream bike is a
Yeti SB-66.
Favourite place to ride?
Lake District, Coed y Brenin, Peak District… too many to name
– I‘m happy most places on my bike.
What’s your background?
I’ve worked in a number of places during education since I
was 14, in both the cycle and outdoor industry. I worked as
part of the sales staff at CIT Camping and then at
Snow+Rock. I then had a stint as a climbing instructor at
Craggy Island. After that I worked again as sales staff
at Cotswold Outdoor, then at Gaynor Sports and then
Biketreks. At University I gained a BA degree in Adventure
Recreation Management and since then worked at Madison as
internal sales advisor, Decathlon as deparment manager and
then at Royles as assistant manager, including working in sales
and customer care.
I’m also in the process of obtaining Mountain Leader
(Summer) Award and also of obtaining British Cycling Level 2
Mountain Bike Leadership Award
Explain your role at Citrus-Lime:
As a ‘non-techie’ at Citrus-Lime, my role is to provide clients
with initial training on their system from a retail perspective;
provide support on retail questions such as “What’s the best
way to process Cyclescheme vouchers through the system
from quotation to remittance?”; and last but certainly not
least, helping our clients achieve the most from our system,
such as generating and mail-merging a list of customers who
haven’t had their bike serviced for six months, so they can be
targeted by email to help drive revenue through the workshop
(an often under-utilised tool) in the quiet winter months.
3p
3p was the rise in fuel duty delayed from
August to January. The delay will cost the
treasury a cool £550m, £535m more than
£15m pledged to boost cyclist safety at
junctions (see above).
How can dealers get in touch?
Via our website at www.citrus-retail.com or by phone on
0845 603 9254.

Gannicott grabs
‘Top Scottish Rider’
accolade
Velocite tops podium
VELOCITE HAS scored a couple of notable podiums over recent months, not least in Stoke
for the (rainy) end of the 2012 Tour Series. The Velocite Geos was dead centre – with
Matrix Fitness-Prendas taking top team honours as well as individual and sprinters titles for
Annie Simpson. Shortly afterwards, Maxine Filby took her Velocite Flux to her first ever
National podium with a 3rd place at Kirroughtree.
THE INAUGURAL Alpine Bikes ‘Top
Scottish Rider’ trophy has been
awarded to George Gannicott. He
picked up the price at the UCI
Mountain Bike World Cup in June at
Fort William.
Gannicott started the seeding run
in 199th position to impressively
qualify in 40th position for the race.
Sadly mechanical failure meant he was
unable to complete the race, but that
didn’t detract from his top efforts,
according to Alpine Bikes director
Bryan Shedden. He said: “It is great to
recognise a young Scottish rider
whose performance has improved so
much over the 2012 season. We wish
him the best of luck for the future.”
Tiso CEO presented the award to
Gannicot on the day.
Alpine was also Retail Partner for
the event.
Haro’s new signing
is the real McCoy
TWENTY FIVE years after turning pro with the brand, Dennis McCoy has reunited
with Haro Bicycles.
McCoy is the inaugural member of the Haro Legends Team, a newly created
role that includes not just sponsorship, but also an ambassadorial role, helping
Haro shape future projects. McCoy said: “I can’t really put into words how cool it
feels to make it back home.”

AHEAD OF the Tour Series round in Woking, team Cycle Premier Kovert took
time out from their hectic schedule to visit Fisher Outdoor Leisure’s SRAM
UK Technical Centre. While there, SRAM technicians gave the team’s bikes
the once over. The team itself has been kitted out with Santini Sleek custom
clothing, while the bikes are (you’ll never guess) loaded up with SRAM Force
group sets. The SRAM Technical Centre is a joint venture between SRAM and
Fisher and is contactable on 0843 487 8815.

SPOKES
There’s no such thing as
a free lunch
Carlton Reid gets his cones adjusted.
Two minutes later, and $14 lighter, he’s
a happy bunny. Why?
LAST MONTH I was in Utah for PressCamp and needed to
get a borrowed Cannondale EVO fettled before a two-day
sportive out in the boondocks. The sportive’s tech support
likely wouldn’t carry a full line of tools, and I needed a
Chris King cone tool. I had been lucky enough to bag the
use of some Enve carbon clinchers, but they wobbled and
I didn’t fancy riding 175 miles on wheels that would only
get wobblier, and certainly didn’t want to damage such
premium bits of kit.
I was travelling with a
Utah resident and he knew
a bike shop which would
probably have the right
tools for the job. We
decided to pay a visit to
Contender of Salt Lake
City. This is a high-end
bike shop, with the best
part of a million dollars of
classy inventory stocked
at any one time (that
was my estimate, and it
was confirmed by the
shop’s owner). Contender
is so high-end the shopbranded road jersey is
made by Assos.
Contender’s mechanics
took the EVO from me and adjusted the cones in a
matter of minutes. The mechanic charged me 14 bucks.
My friend was surprised I was happy to pay this. “But it
only took seconds, it would be no skin off their nose to do
that sort of job for free,” he said.
I was
happy
because the
shop was charging
for the use of specialist
tools and the time of a specialist member of staff.
Now, there’s a lot to be said for doing some jobs as
freebies for the ‘good will’ engendered – a bike purchase
may be made next visit by a customer made happy by
such largesse - but where do you draw the line? Does a
car garage do
these simple jobs
for free in the hope
a car purchase may
come from it?
Absolutely not!
Contender’s till
receipt carried a
menu item for cone
adjustment. A
tightly itemised
EPoS system for the
workshop clearly
pays dividends for
Contender. Time is
money; expertise is
valuable.
Many bike shops
give away what ought
to be charged for. And too many customers expect bike
shops to do “simple” mechanical tasks for free. Some bike
shops – and many customers – need to wake up and
smell the coffee.
