It is Oklahoma’s only public liberal arts college. As a liberal arts institution, we believe it is important that students always have before them the simultaneous experience of specialized and general learning. We believe it is important that they be challenged to relate their academic concentration to the broader realm of knowledge and that they continually be encouraged to develop meaningful and useful associations between diverse bodies of information. This is the meaning of interdisciplinary education, and it is what truly distinguishes the learning experience at USAO. Many of the classes are taught by faculty teams, where two, three and sometimes four instructors plan the course and teach it together. For example, American Civilization may be taught by a historian, philosopher and artist. World Thought and Culture could include a philosopher, sociologist and a literature professor. Math in the Modern World might involve a mathematician, computer scientist and musician. Instructors interact in dealing with complex topics, all bringing his or her particular academic concentration into a conversation of perspectives. This form of education is not easy. We intend that the rigors students face in interdisciplinary learning will result in significant personal growth and development. Difficulty is a necessary prerequisite of growth and development. Challenge is what interdisciplinary education is all about. It is what USAO is all about. USAO has an extremely qualified faculty to offer and help conquer this challenge. Now, almost 90 percent of professors have earned the highest degree available in their field. In 2011, USAO joined the prestigious list of “National Liberal Arts Colleges” in the U.S. News and World Report’s annual ranking — the only institution in Oklahoma, public or private, to be included on this select, national list. The same list includes Trinity, Amherst, Swarthmore and hundreds of other respected, private liberal arts colleges. USAO also received an ‘A’ grade from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA) for the strength of its IDS curriculum, making it one of only 22 universities nationwide to earn this near perfect score. No institution in Oklahoma has higher admission standards. This is only one of the ways this institution is being transformed by its 10-year Mission Enhancement Plan. In addition to the unique curriculum, USAO is a National Historic District and is the only college or university in Oklahoma to be on the National Register of Historic Places. It was given this status because of its history and the preservation of numerous original buildings on campus. Originally founded as Oklahoma College for Women in 1908, the school was the first college created by Oklahoma’s first Legislature. Additionally, it was one of only seven colleges nationwide developed with the mission of catering to women. Along with a rich history, USAO has the oldest original mission of any state college of university. Its original motto states: Not for livelihood but for life. 4 President John Feaver drover women women’s history President John Feaver drover coaches • USAO is the only institution in Oklahoma – public or private – to be ranked on the exclusive “National Liberal Arts Colleges” list in U.S. News’ America’s Best Colleges Guide. • The American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA) includes USAO in a group of only 21 colleges and universities nationwide accorded with the highest accolade for the best quality and content of its core academic curriculum. • Kiplinger magazine lists USAO on its exclusive national role of the 100 “Best Values in Public Colleges” in America. Thank you to all our students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends who continue to work to better the university every day. We wouldn’t be where we are today without you! Best of luck to the Drovers this season! Keep driving to be the best – and so will we! usao overview drover coaches usao.edu/sports sac & polls @USAOlive men’s history USAO Drovers drover men John, Marilyn and Katy Feaver We take great pride in the accomplishments of our students outside the classroom — and athletics is a prime example. In 2012, three Drover teams made appearances in NAIA National Championship tournaments as men’s soccer, men’s basketball and baseball all represented our fine institution on a national stage. These are just three recent examples of the school’s achievements. Throughout its rich 41 years of Drover athletics, the university boasts 45 All-Americans, 63 national scholarathletes and 228 All-Conference athletes and coaches. I know you take pride in the accomplishments of your Drover teams – setting records, graduating excellent student athletes and helping create a vibrant campus culture. USAO also competes aggressively on a national level with the finest schools, public and private, and we’ve racked up several other “titles” that should add to your pride as a Drover: • USAO ranks No. 4 in America among peer colleges for “promoting upward social mobility,” according to Washington Monthly. Its “upward social mobility” measure is based upon USAO’s ratio of graduation rate of Pell Grant recipients to net price. 5 Drover History The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma was well into its history before introducing its first sports teams in 1973 — teams that became known as the Drovers and the Droverettes, named after the rich heritage of cattle driving in the Chickasha area. Today, both teams are referred to as the Drovers. The athletic programs began when the school was still named Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts. It started with baseball games, golf and tennis matches scheduled in the spring of 1973. The Drovers’ most prominent sport — basketball — began in the fall of 1973. During that first year of basketball, the Drovers borrowed uniforms from Oral Roberts University in blue, gold and white. In the school’s second season, the OCLA Drovers became the USAO Drovers, and new uniforms in our trademark green and gold colors were acquired. The first Drover basketball games were set against Bethany Nazarene College on Nov. 17, 1973. Two days later, on Nov. 19, then-Chickasha Mayor Samuel E. Evans declared “Drovers Day” as the university celebrated its first home game in Myers Fieldhouse, which is owned by Chickasha Public Schools. In 1981, the Drovers broke ground on the USAO Fieldhouse, which gave the teams a place to practice and play in their own backyard. Phase I of the building was completed during the 1981-82 season. Three more phases added dressing rooms, training areas and a swimming pool. Long-time head basketball coach and now athletic director Brisco McPherson played for the first Drover basketball team and has been connected with the program ever since. In 1984, basketball star Gordon Musgrove earned the university’s first All-American honor. A few seasons later, in 1988, Herb Blunt became USAO’s first All-America First Team recipient and earned Player of the Year honors in the Sooner Athletic Conference and NAIA’s District 9. In 2002, the men’s basketball team went on to claim the Drovers first NAIA National Championship, beating out conference-rival Oklahoma Baptist 96-79. After a 17-year hiatus, baseball was reborn in 1994, when the USAO Board of Regents voted to expand USAO’s athletics programs to include baseball, softball and cross country. Long-time Drover supporter and USAO administrator Bill Smith donated his personal baseball memorabilia to auction off for funds to help re-establish the Drover baseball and softball programs. In 1995, he became the namesake of the Drovers’ ballpark. Both baseball and softball programs have served the university well, with baseball earning the Red River Conference North Division Championship in 1999 and softball claiming the Sooner 6 Athletic Conference Championship in 2004. The softball program earned three straight NAIA National Tournament appearances in the mid-2000s while the baseball program represented the university at the NAIA National Tournament in 2013. USAO proudly supported tennis teams for years. In 1999, the women’s tennis team became the first in school history to win a regional championship. That year, both the men’s and women’s teams qualified for the NAIA National Tournament. While the golf team served the college sporadically for many seasons, it, along with tennis, was discontinued in lean years. In 1998, the Drovers began the men’s and women’s soccer programs under Coach Jimmy Hampton. The Drover men have claimed numerous Sooner Athletic Conference championships and have been to the NAIA National Tournament five times. In 2010 and 2011, the Drover men made it all the way to the quarterfinals of the tournament, making history for the young program. In 2011, the Drover women’s soccer team competed in their first NAIA National Tournament and won the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament title for the first time in the program’s history. Beginning in fall of 2012, the Drovers brought back cross country, which served the university a few seasons in the mid-1990s. USAO began play as part of a five-school group that started the Sooner Athletic Conference. USAO dropped out of the SAC in 1994 for brief stints in the Oklahoma Intercollegiate and Red River Athletic conferences, but was granted re-admission in the SAC for the 2000-01 season. It is one of only two original members currently in the conference. The Drovers have a rich history of winning and producing quality student-athletes. The university boasts 45 All-Americans, 63 NAIA Scholar-Athletes and 228 All-Conference coaches and athletes throughout its history. Distinguished Drovers USAO is proud to boast their 45 All-Americans, 63 NAIA Scholar-Athletes and 228 All-Conference athletes and coaches. 2010-11 2011-12 2012-13 Nikola Cakarevic John Gardner Gabby Dancers Gracing the sidelines and promoting Drover support for the last three years have been USAO’s own Drover Dancers, a squad that developed out of the former cheerleading team. Much like in the past, the Drover Dancers perform during halftimes and create a presence on the sidelines during USAO home games. This year, the Dancers also will have dances corresponding with some of the basketball game themes. Led by Emily Godwin, formerly Emily Hector, the Dancers have been fine-tuning their performances since finalizing the squad in September. In addition to coaching the Dancers, Godwin is an adjunct professor at USAO as well as the owner and teacher of Love to Dance Studio. USAO Pep Band Supplying the fans with popular music as well as old-time favorites, this season’s USAO Pep Band is around to get you on your feet! The small five-piece set includes four students as well as USAO’s own Dr. Dan Hanson. While it is small in size, the potential for this band is endless! The band will continue to perfect their traditional repertoire of the USAO Fight Song and Star Spangled Banner in addition to playing some new and classic hits — including “Another One Bites the Dust” after each home victory. Hanson describes the band’s music as a riff motif similar to what you’d see on the David Letterman show. 8 2014-15 Themes DateOpponent Time drover coaches drover women women’s history drover coaches drover men men’s history sac & polls Fans are in for quite a treat this season as the Drover basketball experience adds energy, excitement and everyone’s favorite: free stuff! We were looking for someone who understands that academics as well as success on the court need to be equal and that’s where her strengths lie.” In her first season, she had two Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes and seven players named Academic All-Conference, which was the most athletes in the conference honored academically for a school. Additionally, she had a player named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete the following year. “USAO is a place where students can be successful both as a student and an athlete,” Hayden said. “I am very excited about the potential I see at USAO for the women’s basketball program. USAO has proven to excel in other athletic programs, and I believe the women’s basketball program also can become a strong competitive program.” In the 2013-14 season, Hayden had a player become the third member in USAO women’s basketball history to reach the exclusive 1,000-Point Club. Hayden came to USAO directly from Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas. There, she recruited and coached the 2011-12 American Southwest Conference West Division Newcomer of the Year and had three NCAA Scholar-Athletes. Sul Ross is an NCAA Division III school. Prior to joining the Lobo staff in 2010, Hayden spent two seasons starting a new program as the head women’s basketball coach at NAIA Division I University of the Southwest in Hobbs, N.M. Both years she coached at USW, her team qualified for the Red River Conference tournament. During her two seasons at USW, Hayden had a RRAC Player of the Year, a two-time NAIA All-America selection, six All-Conference selections and numerous student athletes recognized as scholar athletes by the conference as well as the NAIA. Additionally, Hayden’s 2008-09 and 2009-10 teams were both recognized as NAIA Scholar Teams. Before her time at the University of the Southwest, Hayden served as the assistant women’s basketball coach and director of student activities at Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa. She also served as a graduate assistant for athletic administration and sports information at West Texas A&M University and was an assistant women’s basketball coach at Oklahoma Panhandle State University after graduating from there. Hayden graduated with her master’s of education in administration from West Texas A&M. She earned two bachelor’s degrees in accounting and business education from Oklahoma Panhandle State University. Additionally, she played basketball and softball at Oklahoma Panhandle State. Hayden and her husband, Sam, have one daughter, Carlie. It keeps me busy.” Johnson came to USAO after spending two years as a graduate assistant at Northwestern Oklahoma State and two years as a player for the Lady Rangers. We have been battling several early season injuries but should have everyone back within the next couple of weeks,” said Jennifer Hayden, USAO head women’s basketball coach, at the beginning of the season. “I expect us to play hard every game and to be competitive.” Last year, the Drovers struggled through a short bench and injuries all season. Before the season began, Hayden lost two likely starters to seasonending injuries. With only a handful of subs available, other athletes battled stress injuries as the season progressed. But this season, Hayden said, depth will play a big factor in the Drovers’ success. “We worked really hard on this year’s recruiting class and were excited to sign seven transfers and five freshmen,” she said. “We are looking for all seven transfers to make an immediate impact on our team. We also have a couple freshmen who are developing well and pushing for playing time.” Two key players lost from the 2013-14 campaign were seniors Paige Pulliam and Rashelle Carr. In addition to the leadership they provided, they were the team’s main scorers. In the Drovers’ final game, Pulliam became the program’s third member of the 1,000-Point Club. “Paige and Rashelle are definitely difficult to replace,” Hayden said. “We wish we could have all our seniors another year.” This year, USAO has just two players who have seen 12 significant time on the floor as a Drover — but not together. Ndeye Ngom, who was injured last season, played in 2012-13 and led the team in steals (43) and assists (85) and was second on the team in total rebounds with 163. The other player who returns for another season is Brooke Worcester, who joined the team last season to play in 21 games and secure 59 points. Agota Jozan, a transfer from New Mexico Junior College, was expected to make a huge impact on the 2013-14 team before she was injured in the season opener. “Our obvious weakness right now is being a virtually new team so we don’t have any real game time playing experience together, which is why our scrimmages are so important to us this year,” Hayden explained. “The more we play, the more they are learning about each other and improving as a team.” The Drovers had two scrimmages in October before the season began. In the tough Sooner Athletic Conference, the Drovers have plenty of top-level competition. Three SAC schools — Oklahoma City, John Brown and Oklahoma Baptist — are ranked in the NAIA’s Top 10 in its Preseason Coaches Poll and two others are receiving votes nationally. “We had four teams in the national tournament last year and two of those made it to the Fab Four,” Hayden said. “So there are definitely no easy games. We have to be prepared to play hard every night.” Hayden begins her third season with the Drovers. In her first two seasons, she saw the Drovers to back-toback SAC tournaments and had three players named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes. 2014-15 Women’s Roster usao overview drover coaches drover women women’s history Ht. 6’6 5’8 5’10 5’8 5’5 5’7 5’4 5’9 5’8 5’10 6’2 5’3 5’5 5’2 Hometown/Previous School Riga, Latvia/Western Texas College Oklahoma City/Southmoore HS Dakar, Senegal/Redlands JC Cache, Okla./Oklahoma Baptist Tulsa, Okla./Seminole State JC Hugo, Okla./Redlands JC Lubbock, Texas/Frenship HS Denver, Colo./Western Oklahoma State Denver, Colo./Western Oklahoma State Nagykorös, Hungary/New Mexico JC Abilene, Texas/Western Texas College Bridgeport, Texas/Alvord HS Dallas, Texas/Sunset HS Chickasha, Okla./Pauls Valley HS Head Coach: Jennifer Hayden Assistant Coach: Leandra Johnson USAO Drovers @USAOlive usao.edu/sports sac & polls Pos. Hall becomes the seventh head coach in Drover basketball history. He said he is eager to get started with his players, bond as a unit and establish their strengths. Hall describes his playing style as high energy and enjoyable for coaches, players and fans. Hall comes to USAO from the University of Missouri – Kansas City, an NCAA Division I institution, where he was an assistant coach for the Kangaroos for a year. Prior to serving as an assistant, he was the director of operations for three years at UMKC. From 2001-09, Hall was the head basketball coach at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas. He left Southwestern College as the third winningest coach in school history, compiling a 145-92 overall record. The 145 wins are the most during any eight-year span in the 103-year history of Southwestern College basketball. Southwestern is an NAIA school in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, and while he was there, Hall coached against former USAO coach, Athletic Director Brisco McPherson. In 2006, he led the Moundbuilders to a school record of 28 wins and was named KCAC Coach of the Year. In the classroom, Hall left Southwestern with a perfect 100 percent graduation rate, as all 33 of his seniors earned their degrees. While at Southwestern, Hall also served as an associate professor of sport management from 2001-09. Additionally, he worked in the development office, where he left the school as an Assistant Athletic Director. Hall joined the Moundbuilder program from the Detroit Pistons of the National Basketball Association, where he spent two seasons as the corporate sales coordinator. Before being hired by the Pistons, he completed an eight-week internship in the athletic department of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Hall played collegiately at Wartburg College, a liberal arts institution, in Waverly, Iowa. During his varsity action, he was a two-year starter on teams that combined to go 56-23 and to win two Iowa conference championships. Those teams both played in the NCAA national tournament and the 1990-91 team reached the Sweet 16. He graduated from Wartburg in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in fitness management and a minor in business. Hall earned a master’s degree from the West Virginia University sport management program in 1994. He and his wife, Tiffany, have two children, Darren and Katie. 22 Hall Briefly Personal • • • • Born: March 20, 1971 Family: Wife, Tiffany; son, Darren; daughter, Katie Education: B.S., fitness management, Wartburg College, 1993; M.A., sports management, West Virginia University, 1994 Interesting Fact: Enjoys water skiing and bicycling Playing Career • Hall started two seasons at Wartburg College Coaching Highlights • 2012-13: Assistant Coach, University of Missouri — Kansas City • 2009-12: Director of Operations, University of Missouri — Kansas City • 2001-09: Head Coach, Southwestern College Third winningest coach in school history (145-92) KCAC Coach of the Year, 2006 School record of 28 wins, 2006 100 percent graduation rate • 1999-2001: Corporate Sales Coordinator, Detroit Pistons Chris Francis drover women women’s history institution. Since Hall joined the team about the time school started, he really had to hit the ground running, learning what his team was capable of and where to put the pieces to create success. Through a month of official practices and two scrimmages, Hall has seen the Drovers through the process of turning preseason talent into outcomes on the floor. “I feel like our team is making slow, steady progress each day,” he said. “As a staff, we are trying to get them to understand the value of each possession and the importance of competing at a high level every time they step on the floor.” As the preseason comes to a close, Hall said he believes the team’s efforts will show as the season develops. “I’m just excited for the players. It’s their team and their season,” he said. “I think they will get out of it what they put into it.” The Drovers went 15-15 (10-10) during the 201314 campaign, which ended in the SAC Semifinals. The Drovers, however, graduated key seniors from that team, including All-American Jahseth Lloyd, All-Conference athlete Shavon Scott and All-SAC Tournament team member Tyler Reynolds. Without those starters, who provided senior leadership and offensive firepower, the Drovers will look to their six returners to fill in the gaps, returners 24 including guards David Tucker, Jr., and Donnie Brown, each of whom saw starts in the majority of games last year. Also returning is Markens Charles, another guard who started the 2013-14 team’s first three contests and averaged nearly 14 points a game before sustaining a season-ending injury. “Our strength, at least right now, is our backcourt. We have a solid group of guards,” Hall said. “We need to find consistent, positive leadership and a core group willing to defend and rebound.” In addition to the returners, the Drovers brought in eight new players, including three freshmen, two sophomores and three seniors. “I like our new players. They are actually all new to me, so it gives everyone a clean slate,” Hall said. “I came in with no pre-conceived notions of who could do what.” The Drovers play in one of the best small college leagues in the country with three Sooner Athletic Conference schools — Saint Gregory’s, Oklahoma Baptist and Wayland Baptist — present in the NAIA’s Top 25 in the Preseason Coaches Poll this year. Two others are receiving votes. Further, the Drovers have scheduled two nonconference opponents ranked in the preseason in (20) Evangel University and (T25) Our Lady of the Lake. “Our goals this season are to play as close to our maximum potential as possible, compete and play hard and have fun doing it,” Hall said. “We have a good group and some talented athletes. I hope people will come out and support them.” 2014-15 Men’s Roster usao overview drover coaches drover women women’s history drover coaches Cl. Jr. Sr. Jr. Sr. Sr. Sr. Jr. Fr. Fr. So. So. Jr. Fr.
