almost 90 percent of professors have earned the highest
degree available in their field.
USAO is one the prestigious list of “National Liberal
Arts Colleges” in the U.S. News and World Report’s
annual ranking — the only institution in Oklahoma, public
or private, to be included on this select, national list. The
same list includes Trinity, Amherst, Swarthmore and
hundreds of other respected, private liberal arts colleges.
USAO also received an ‘A’ grade from the American
Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA) for the strength
of its IDS curriculum, making it one of only 22 universities
nationwide to score this near perfect score.
As of fall 2011, no institution in Oklahoma has higher
admission standards. This is only one of the ways this
institution is being transformed by its 10-year Mission
Enhancement Plan.
In addition to the unique curriculum, USAO is a National
Historic District and is the only college or university in
Oklahoma to be on the National Register of Historic
Places. It was given this status because of its history
and the preservation of numerous original buildings on
campus.
Originally founded as Oklahoma College for Women
in 1908, the school was the first college created by
Oklahoma’s first Legislature. Additionally, it was one of
only seven colleges nationwide created with the mission
of catering to women.
Along with a rich history, USAO has the oldest original
mission of any state college of university. Its original motto
states:
usao
overview
USAO is one of the most unique and progressive
universities in the nation. It is Oklahoma’s only public
liberal arts college.
As a liberal arts institution, we believe it is important
that students always have before them the simultaneous
experience of specialized and general learning. We
believe it is important that they be challenged to relate
their academic concentration to the broader realm of
knowledge and that they continually be encouraged to
develop meaningful and useful associations between
diverse bodies of information.
This is the meaning of interdisciplinary education, and
it is what truly distinguishes the learning experience at
USAO. Many of the classes are taught by faculty teams,
where two, three and sometimes four instructors plan the
course and teach it together.
For example, “American Civilization” may be taught
by a historian, philosopher and artist. “World Thought
and Culture” could include a philosopher, sociologist
and a literature professor. “Math in the Modern World”
might involve a mathematician, computer scientist and
musician.
Instructors interact in dealing with complex topics, all
bringing his or her particular academic concentration
into a conversation of perspectives.
This form of education is not easy. We intend that the
rigors students face in interdisciplinary learning will result
in significant personal growth and development. Difficulty
is a necessary prerequisite of growth and development.
Challenge is what interdisciplinary education is all about.
It is what USAO is all about.
USAO has one of the best-prepared faculties in the
state to offer and help conquer this challenge. Now,

We take great pride in the accomplishments of our
students outside the classroom. And athletics is a prime
example.
Last year, three Drover teams made appearances in
NAIA National Championship tournaments as men’s
soccer, men’s basketball and baseball all represented our
fine institution on a national stage. These are just three
recent examples of the school’s achievements.
Throughout its rich 40 years of Drover athletics, the
university boasts 39 All-Americans, 62 national scholarathletes and 210 All-Conference athletes and coaches.
I know you take pride in the accomplishments of your
Drover teams — setting records, graduating excellent
student athletes and helping create a vibrant campus
culture.
USAO, though, competes aggressively on a national
level with the finest schools, public and private, and we’ve
racked up several other “titles” that should add to your
pride as a Drover:
• USAO ranks No. 4 in America among peer colleges
for “promoting upward social mobility,” according to
the latest report from Washington Monthly. Its “upward
social mobility” measure is based upon USAO’s ratio of
graduation rate of Pell Grant recipients to net price.
• For the third year in a row, USAO is the only institution
in Oklahoma – public or private – to be ranked on the
exclusive “National Liberal Arts Colleges” list in U.S.
News’ America’s Best Colleges Guide. USAO remains on
its national list of the top 100 colleges and universities
graduating students with “Least Debt.”
• The American Council of Trustees and Alumni
(ACTA) includes USAO in a group of only 21 colleges
and universities nationwide accorded with the highest
accolade for the best quality and content of its core
academic curriculum.
• Kiplinger magazine lists USAO on its exclusive
national role of the 100 “Best Values in Public Colleges”
in America.
Thank you to all our students, alumni, faculty, staff and
friends who continue to work to better the university every
day. We wouldn’t be where we are today without you!
Best of luck to the Drovers this season! Keep driving to
be the best – and so will we!

Drover History
10
The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma was well
into its history before introducing its first sports teams in
1973 — teams that became known as the Drovers and the
Droverettes, named after the rich heritage of cattle driving
in the Chickasha area. Today, both teams are referred to as
the Drovers.
The athletic programs began when the school was still
named Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts. It started with
baseball games and golf and tennis matches scheduled in
the spring of 1973. The Drovers’ most prominent sport —
basketball — began in the fall of 1973.
During that first year of basketball, the Drovers borrowed
uniforms from Oral Roberts University in blue, gold and
white. In the school’s second season, the OCLA Drovers became the USAO Drovers, and new uniforms in our
trademark green and gold colors were acquired.
The first Drover basketball games were set against Bethany Nazarene College on Nov. 17, 1973. Two days later, on
Nov. 19, then-Chickasha Mayor Samuel E. Evans declared
“Drovers Day” as the university celebrated its first home
game in Myers Fieldhouse, which is owned by Chickasha
Public Schools. In 1981, the Drovers broke ground on the
USAO Fieldhouse, which gave the teams a place to practice and play in their own backyard. Phase I of the building
was completed during the 1981-82 season. Three more
phases added dressing rooms, training areas and a swimming pool.
Long-time head basketball coach and now athletic director Brisco McPherson played for the first Drover basketball team and has been connected with the school ever
since.
In 1984, basketball star Gordon Musgrove earned the
university’s first All-American honor. A few seasons later,
in 1988, Herb Blunt became USAO’s first All-America First
Team recipient and earned Player of the Year honors in the
Sooner Athletic Conference and NAIA’s District 9.
In 2002, the men’s basketball team went on to claim the
Drovers first NAIA National Championship, beating out
conference-rival Oklahoma Baptist 96-79.
After a 17-year hiatus, baseball was reborn in 1994,
when the USAO Board of Regents voted to expand USAO’s athletics programs to include baseball, softball and
cross country. Long-time Drover supporter and USAO
administrator Bill Smith donated his personal baseball
memorabilia to auction off for funds to help re-establish
the Drover baseball and softball programs. In 1995, he became the namesake of the Drovers’ ballpark.
Both baseball and softball programs have served the
university well, with baseball earning the Red River Conference North Division Championship in 1999 and softball
claiming the Sooner Athletic Conference Championship
in 2004. The softball program earned three straight NAIA
National Championship tournament appearances in the
mid-2000s while the baseball program represented the
university at the NAIA National Championship tournament
in 2013.
USAO proudly supported a tennis teams for years. In
1999, the women’s tennis team became the first in school
history to win a regional championship. That year, both the
men’s and women’s team’s qualified for the NAIA National
Championship tournament.
While the golf team served the college sporadically with
pride for many seasons, it along with tennis, was discontinued in lean years.
In 1998, the Drovers began the men’s and women’s soccer programs under Coach Jimmy Hampton. The Drover
men have claimed numerous Sooner Athletic Conference
championships and have been to the NAIA National Tournament five times. In 2010 and 2011, the Drover men made
it all the way to the quarterfinals of the tournament, making
history for the young program.
In 2011, the Drover women’s soccer team competed in
its first NAIA National Championship tournament and won
the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament title for the
first time in the program’s history.
Beginning in fall of 2012, the Drovers brought back cross
country, which served the university a few seasons in the
mid-1990s.
USAO began play as part of a five-school group that
started the Sooner Athletic Conference. USAO dropped
out of the SAC in 1994 to join the Oklahoma Intercollegiate
Conference. The Drovers played in the OIC for just four
seasons before moving on to the Red River Athletic Conference. After only two seasons with the RRAC, USAO applied for and was granted membership back into the SAC
for the 2000-01 season.
The Drovers have a rich history of winning and producing quality student-athletes. The university boasts v39
All-Americans, 62 NAIA Scholar-Athletes and 210 All-Conference coaches and athletes throughout its history.

Head Coach
The kinks have been worked out. The newness has worn off. And the
legacy has started. Now, it’s just about the baseball.
Head Coach Mike Ross is now entering his sixth year at the helm of
USAO’s baseball program and coming off of one of the best seasons in
program history.
In 2013, Coach Ross’ Drovers earned their first bid to the NAIA Baseball
National Championship Opening Round, broke the all-time wins record
with 41 and had two players who signed with professional baseball franchises. That season, Ross also earned his first All-Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honor.
The 2013 season just built on Ross’ previous success. Each year since
being named head coach, Ross has logged a winning season. In February
2012, Ross celebrated his 100th win in a victory over No. 1 Oklahoma City
at home at Bill Smith Ballpark.
During the 2009 season as a co-head coach with long-time coach L.J.
Powell, Ross took the Drovers to their
second best record in school history
and followed it a year later with the
oss
program’s fourth best season. Numerous players set school records
ecord
and two were named All-Sooner Ath5 Seasons
letic Conference athletes.

assistant coach at Vernon College, where he helped lead the Chaparrals
to 30-plus wins two seasons in a row.
He had brief stints coaching a premier league summer team in Burkburnett, Texas, and as an assistant coach in the 2004 Junior Olympic trials
before finding his way back to his alma mater. Ross is a 2002 USAO graduate.
As a player, Ross helped take Redlands Community College to become
conference and regional champions and finish fifth in the JUCO World
Series in 1995. The following year, Ross moved to Graceland University,
where he played for three seasons, two of which he served as team captain. He set the school record for saves in both the 1998 and 1999 seasons
and was named All-Conference in 1999.
Ross earned his bachelor’s degree in history from USAO in 2002 and
achieved a master’s of sports science in sports coaching from the United

“This is what you get when you recruit junior college
guys,” Ross said. “We identified the players we needed
and Coach Hayden did a great job of making a lot of contacts and bringing these guys in.”
With so many new faces and the depth Ross expects,
he was unable to isolate key newcomers for the Drovers.
“They are pieces of the puzzle that I’ve got to figure out
where they go and at what times,” he said. “There will be
guys who will be ‘every day’ guys but for the most part, it
is going to take all 30 guys to go out and have a successful season.”
The always-tough SAC has undergone some changes in the last few years. Starting this season, four teams
— (13) Northwood, Southwestern Assemblies of God,
Southwestern Christian and (20) Texas Wesleyan — have
joined the conference.
Including the new teams, four SAC schools are in the
preseason Top 25 poll.
“The league is just loaded. It’s just unbelievable,” he
said. “It is probably stronger … It’s Sooner Athletic Conference baseball, and that’s why I love being here and
working in this league.”
USAO will be offering free, live stream broadcasts of the
majority of the home games this year. Games will stream
in real time along with live stats, a convenience USAO
added in 2010.
“It’s exciting for us because we get a lot of kids from different states where their parents don’t get to watch them
play,” Ross said. “I hope the fans are excited about it, and
I hope they take advantage of it.”

As Head Coach Mike Ross enters his sixth year at the
helm of the baseball program at the University of Science
and Arts of Oklahoma, he says the main thing he looks for
in his team is the same every year.
“I’m expecting them to go out and play hard and compete every day, and we will see where we end up,” he
said. “My goal is, at the end of the year, to have a chance
to play for a championship, and you’ve just got to make
the national tournament to do that because anything can
happen when you’re in the postseason.”
Coming off of the best season in Drover baseball history, the expectations are high for the 2014 squad, but Ross
said he thinks his players can carve their own space in
Drover baseball history.
“This team this year is going to have to go out and create their own success. We can’t rely on what those guys
did for us last year,” Ross said. “We’ve been there before,
and now it’s their job to keep us there. We don’t want to
take any steps backward.”
The Drovers are receiving votes in the 2014 NAIA Baseball Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll and were picked
fifth in the Sooner Athletic Conference by conference
coaches.
Preseason polls are based off of the previous year’s
performance. In 2013, the Drovers made their way to their
first-ever NAIA Baseball National Championship tournament, playing in three games in the Oklahoma City pool
before ending the season.
That year, the Drovers had a record-breaking 41 wins,
the program’s first NAIA All-Americans and two players
sign with professional baseball franchises. Additionally,
Ross won his first SAC Coach of the Year honor.
“I think last year we got where we wanted to go and got
to the national tournament. That’s always been our goal
and last year was the first time we got there,” Ross said.
Returning for another year are starting catcher Owen
Adams, starting pitcher Chris Fischer as well as catcher
Kyle Lewis and pitchers Aaron Copfer and Josh Terrell —
all of whom Ross said he expects to lead the team.
“Those guys were here last year and they know what it
takes to get to where we want to go. I’m going to expect
a lot of big things from those guys,” he said.
Spending a great deal of time over the summer recruiting new talent for USAO, Ross and Assistant Coach Sam
Hayden assembled an essentially new team.
