Seasons Greetings Members!
When your partner brags about snuggling up to
Beckie Scott for a photo-op, it’s grounds for
worming your way into the media section of the
World Cup to do the same with one of the very
handsome and incredibly fast gold medalists in the
classic sprint relay, Eldar Roennin … don’t you
think? I’m officially a Norwegian groupie and my
heart is still racing. Of course, Brian’s story now is
that Beckie actually asked him for the picture, not
the other way around.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m an ardent and devoted
fan of the Canadian team. How could you not be when
Beckie finished the week by doubling her World Cup Medal
count to 10? Sarah’s finish line comment after her 6th place
finish in the 15 km Classic went something like, “I’m thrilled
with 6th and to do it in my home town… That’s just like a
gold for me.” The excitement in Canmore and I’m sure also
in Vernon is still raging. What a spectacular event to have
in our own backyard for the first time in many years.
As instructors some of us are watching these amazing
athletes and looking at what we can learn from them and
how to pass that on to those that we coach and teach.
Some thoughts and tidbits are shared in this issue. It’s
worth a ponder.
And once I get over being star struck and stop
wondering what could have been with Eldar, I’ll be sure to
join you in that pondering.

du relais du sprint, Eldar Roenning … ne pensez-vous pas? Officiellement, je
suis une groupie des Norvégiens et quand j’y pense, mon cœur bat encore
plus vite! Bien sûr, la version de Brian maintenant est que Beckie Scott lui a
en fait demander de prendre une photo avec lui, et non le contraire.
Comprenez-moi bien, je suis une fan inconditionnelle de l’équipe
canadienne. Comment ne pas l’être quand Beckie a terminé la semaine en
doublant à 10 son nombre de médailles obtenues en Coupe du monde? La
sixième place de Sarah au 15 km classique lui a suscité cette remarque : « Je
suis très excitée de la 6e place et chez moi en plus… que c’est comme de l’or
pour moi. » L’emballement à Canmore et j’en suis certaine à Vernon aussi est
au maximum. Quel événement spectaculaire nous avions dans notre cour
pour la première fois depuis de nombreuses années!
Comme moniteurs, certains de nous regardons ces athlètes incroyables et
apprenons d’eux et de comment transmettre leur excellence à nos élèves et
athlètes. Quelques idées et remarques sont partagées dans ce numéro. Ça
mérite réflexion.
Et quand je cesserai d’être éblouie et que j’arrêterai de rêver à Eldar, je me
joindrai à vous dans cette réflexion.

President’s Report
CANSI AGM December 10, 2005

T
he CANSI Board has been very active and become
even stronger since the December 4, 2004 AGM in
Canmore, Alberta. As per last year, the Executive and
Board continues to use the financially economical process
of conference calling to regularly touch base and conduct
virtual meetings to make better and more timely decisions
on your behalf.
Benefits and service improvements continue to be
reaped from the October, 2004 relocation of the CANSI
National office from Canmore, Alberta to the Canadian Ski
Patrol System in Ottawa, Ontario. Both the Board and
Membership have expressed appreciation for the
enhanced bilingual service capability and more timely
responses to member inquiries and current reporting on
finances. Based on member feedback and an assessment
of the financial costs associated with maintaining the office
and level of service, the Board has determined that a
strong and stable CANSI national office is a key foundation
element for the organization to grow and it is in the best
interest of the organization to continue with the current
arrangement with The Canadian Ski Patrol System.

restructuring of the current membership database was
critical for the Board to have the necessary statistics to
make financially prudent decisions. Due to the past data
management structure, many statistics were unclear and
skewed. Two years ago, it appears that the organization
was comprised of nearly 1,000 active instructor members.
Due to the office relocation last year only an estimate of
instructor numbers (750) could be made. Thanks to the
intensive work on the database, statistics now clearly show
that there are 672 active CANSI instructor members. The
Board has taken special note of this significant decline over
two years and the associated lost revenue.
As a further cost cutting measure, the CANSI National
Board has decided to conduct the National AGM in

encore plus solide depuis l’assemblée générale annuelle du 4 décembre,

Conseil d’administration continuent d’utiliser le processus économique
d’appel-conférence pour être en contact régulièrement et pour tenir des

décisions en votre nom.

Puisque l’une des principales sources de revenus de l’organisation est la
contribution des membres, il a été déterminé que la restructuration de la
base de données des membres est primordiale pour permettre au Conseil
de posséder les statistiques nécessaires pour prendre des décisions
financières prudentes. À cause de l’ancienne structure de gestion des
données, beaucoup de statistiques étaient imprécises et erronées. Il y a
deux ans, il semblait que l’organisation comprenait près de 1 000 membres
moniteurs actifs. L’année dernière, à cause de la relocalisation du

conjunction with the CANSI Manitoba AGM, which is to be
held in Winnipeg, Manitoba on December 10, 2005. Ian
Hughes, CANSI Central Vice President, will represent
CANSI National. One of the key items on the 2005 National
AGM agenda was the creation of a National Strategic Plan.
After reviewing the current financial situation, the Board
has decided to park this item until the required funds are
available for this project.
The Board decided that the Technical committee
meeting/seminar should proceed on December 2-6, 2005
in Le Domaine St-Bernard, Quebec, but on a reduced
budget of $3,000.00. Further, it is the Board’s expectation
that the Regions would provide financial travel assistance
to their representatives.
The work to the CANSI Instructor Manual has finally
been completed. The Skating, Classic and Downhill
technical chapters have been rewritten and updated. As
another cost-cutting and efficiency measure, the Board
decided to leverage technology and as a result it is
available in CD format.

The DVD Project has progressed well over the year
and we are closer to a released date.
CANSI Ontario received a Trillium Grant from the
province of Ontario in the amount of $92,000 payable over
two years. The grant is to be used for rebuilding the CANSI
National organization's administrative and volunteer
infrastructure in order to meet the increased demand for
Nordic ski instruction and certification. The RFP (Request
For Proposals) is now listed on our web page and I
encourage you to read it and see what the future holds.
I would like to thank the CANSI Board the Technical
Committee and our professional staff at the Canadian Ski
Patrol System for their ongoing dedication and for providing
valuable knowledge, skills and forward thinking.

he 2005/2006 season is looking positive, with an increase in members and an increase in courses
offered. The biggest news for this season comes from the hard work and dedication of many who have
contributed to the updating of the Technical Manual. This is the bible for our existence; it was in need of
revising for many years. Tiffany Edwardson has given many hours of her time to making this possible, I would
like to take this opportunity to thank her and all who have contributed their time. If you would like to assist in
improving this manual, please contact myself; it will be an ongoing process now that it is in electronic form.
Updates are sent to regions on a CD then distributed to course conductors in the areas. Please contact your
regional office for details.
In the past few years, limited membership and fewer courses have produced a reduced budget for the
Technical committee’s meeting and seminar. This year we have had to offset some of the expenses occurred
for the regional tech reps back to the regions. For some regions like the Atlantic (they work on a break-even
budget), this means that they cannot send their Tech rep to the meeting and seminar. Remember that these
volunteers put their time and sometimes their money towards these seminars, which DIRECTLY benefits your
regions. We are a coast-to-coast organization, the opportunity for Tech members to make the content of the lessons consistent happens when
we can get together on snow in one location. By attending the regional seminars, not only do you get the latest info and a ‘tune-up’ but you also
support the tech reps (a portion of the seminar fees go to the costs of sending the reps to the national seminars). Smile at them and say ‘thank
you’, they enjoy the feedback!
We are encouraging members to achieve a higher level of certification. As our higher-level Course Conductors get older (yes, it happens to
all of us at some point), they may be in need to pass on their vast experience to a new course conductor so that a ‘fresh set of legs’ is up-front,
running the show. Jump into it this year! Find that course you need on the CANSI website. Also, look into other organizations for supporting
courses that will make you a better instructor (coaching, alpine, snowboard, public speaking, etc.).
Some mountains have opened early this year, get your boards out of the closet and set them free on the snow!
For my last comment, “if nothing else works in your class, always remember to dance like no one is watching”. Enjoy life.
Data Integrity Notice

his year we've moved our National office to Ottawa. Unfortunately, when that transfer was made some information did not make it. It’s
unclear how some member information disappeared but it means that when you received your membership renewal that it may not have been
correct. If this is the case, then please send the correction when you send in your membership fee. Write down when you took your last course,
what course it was (ie. Refresher, Level II XC, Level I Tele, etc), who the instructor was and where it was. You can email this info to Renee at
[email protected]. Thank you for your patience while this gets sorted out.

Viessman World Cup – Welcome to Scott Land!

I was thrilled to watch some world class skiing recently at Sovereign Lake
Nordic Center as Becky and Sarah did us proud with several podium visit during two
exciting days of racing.
Here are some quick technical observations:
•
The racers who included two skate in the their sprint race after gaining
top speed with one skate always did well
• The amount of bending at the knees in double poling was different
from nation to nation
• There was very little rotation in any of the skating manoeuvres
• Sprint racers are built differently from long distance skiers, there is a
new breed of Nordic skier emerging
• Despite the best efforts of the dynamic women in my ski club, the
Italian men preferred dancing with each other in the saloon
We are lucky to have racers of this calibre in our neighbourhood. I was also quite lucky to bump into some world cup racers out training on
the trails. They were all very friendly and all were skiing quite slowly for training. So remember, train slow, long and strong to build good
technique, then crank up the tempo on race day.

Watch Your Words
Whether it be in skating or classic, diagonal stride or double
pole, how many times have you heard a client ask where to plant
their poles? It’s probably hard to keep count, eh?
And how many times have you heard coaches or instructors or
maybe even yourself respond with “even
with the binding” or “near the toe of the
boot”?
It’s a valid answer. The problem is that
it is actually only valid for an advanced
skier with the appropriate length of pole. As
soon as you change the flexion in your
ankle, you change the position of the pole
plant in relation to your foot. The same
goes for pole length and you are bound to
see varying sizes amongst recreational
skiers.
What you don’t want is to find your
client head down, looking at their pole plant, adjusting their arm
reach so as to plant “even with the binding”.
A more appropriate alternative is to discuss the position of the
hand at the pole plant—arm pit height, directly in front of the
shoulder. The tip will fall where it may regardless of ankle flexion
or pole length and it won’t need to be adjusted as the skier
improves or upgrades equipment. Watch your words!

entendu un élève demander où faut-il planter les bâtons? C’est
sans doute difficile à comptabiliser, n’est-ce pas?
Et combien de fois avez-vous entendu des entraîneurs ou des
moniteurs ou peut-être vous-même répondre « vis-à-vis
vos fixations » ou « près du bout de votre chaussure »?
C’est une réponse valide. Le problème est que c’est
valide seulement pour un skieur expert qui a la longueur de
bâtons appropriée. Aussitôt que vous changez la flexion
des chevilles, vous changez la position du planté de bâton
par rapport à votre pied. La même chose pour la longueur
des bâtons et vous voyez probablement des longueurs
variées parmi les skieurs récréatifs.
Ce que vous ne voulez pas, c’est de voir votre élève la
tête en bas à regarder son planté de bâton, ajustant sa
portée de bras pour planter « vis-à-vis sa fixation ».
Une solution plus appropriée est de discuter la position de la
main au planté du bâton – à hauteur de l’aisselle, directement
devant l’épaule. La pointe tombera où il faut sans égard à la
flexion de la cheville ou à la longueur du bâton et ne nécessitera
pas d’ajustement avec l’amélioration du skieur ou de son matériel.

CENTRAL REPORT
Early snow in November and consistent temperatures through December has meant a great start to the ski season here. Here being
Manitoba at least, although it looks like Saskatchewan and Nunavut are enjoying a good season as well. (With no members in Nunavut to report
I can only imagine skiing up there. Snow availability isn’t likely a problem.)
We ran a combination Level I/II briefing and Level I Pre-Course December 10 In Winnipeg. Laurie Penton conducted a well received
session in changeable conditions as the temperature started at -2 and dropped to -18 before the day ended. It was surprising for me to realize
we actually had more Level II instructors present than Level I. Looking at the member list at the end of the day I realized we have more active
Level II than Level I instructors in Manitoba.
The new CD version of the Instructors manual was very well received by all members present. Many had read of the DVD project and were
eager to see it as well. Both were seen as powerful teaching tools for the “average instructor”, a rewarding sentiment.
We recently received a request from the Provincial Ski team to include three team members in the upcoming Level I course. Fitting it in to
their race schedule may be a challenge but worth the effort if we can pull it off. The course is currently scheduled for January 14 & 15 at
Windsor Park Nordic Centre in Winnipeg. Registration is still open. We are not offering any higher Level courses this year but interested
members may be eligible for a travel subsidy to attend a course in another region.
CANSI Central also hosted the National Annual General Meeting December 10, immediately following our Regional Briefing. A short report
on the AGM can be found elsewhere in XCitation.

The stars were out as Ulf Kleppe joined our senior CANSI Course Conductors Clare Magee and Mike Moran for a deep and thorough
sharing of XC skiing educational knowledge. Ulf is a highly respected Cross-Country
Canada coach who over the past 15 or so years developed a unique and simple 5point method for teaching XC skiing (especially Classic) for both racers and
recreational skiers. Work done on this regional weekend brainstorm will certainly
percolate up to CANSI National Technical Committee.
Also present were Peter Grey, Kevin French, Steve Gentles and Jan Vopalensky.
Special thanks to Clare, Peter and Jan for bringing and preparing all the food. It looks
like the cuisine came together pretty well and the weather cooperated!

refinements adopted by the National Course Conductors and anyone who wants to keep current will benefit from these sessions.
Everyone is encouraged to attend annually and (when required) your certification can be refreshed for a small paperwork fee. Participants
will have members of the general public to present to in the afternoon. Think about booking one of these fun and informative sessions at your
local hill next season.

Assessment of the responses to the RFP for fulfilling the Trillium grant has begun. The winning proposal will be announced in the next
issue.
Thanks to the Ontario Ski Council 100% of the course fees will be refunded to any youth (between the ages of 16 and 21) who has passed
a CANSI Ontario certification course. For all other courses and successes, all youths will be refunded 25% of the course fee. Recipients of
these grants will be announced and awarded at the CANSI Ontario AGM.

The Annual General Meeting of CANSI national was held in Winnipeg December 10, 2005. Highlights are reported below.

Motion: To accept the treasure’s Report

Discussion: In the 2004 – 2005 fiscal year CANSI reported revenue of $32059.54 and expenses of $44,135.90, ending the year in a deficit
position of $12076.90. The current year began with retained earnings of $9455.26. The deficit is a result of less than anticipated membership.

"Manning on the Move"By Mark Simpson
Manning Park Resort is a great ski area just over two hours drive from Vancouver. They recently added a new General Manager, Peter
Bueschkens and promoted Wayne Cooper to Snow School Manager for all snow sports. I was privileged to conduct a XC Level 1 course there
last week and had a really fun course with 8 keeners. Wayne and Peter have challenged all staff (including restaurant and hotel staff) to try
every winter sport on the hill and are actively encouraging cross certification. This supportive professional development culture will be a great
incubator for future leaders in our sport. I will watch closely as this resort takes their Nordic product seriously and strives for excellence. I also
saw three adult lynx travelling in pack during three days of full moons, hoar frost, cool, clear temperatures and last but not least, a ceremonial
bonfire where old skis were sacrificed to Ullr, the Norse God of Winter. A great way to start winter.

“You Can Teach an
Old Dog New Tricks”

Mark is a Vancouver-based winemaker and
outdoor enthusiast. He holds his CANSI XC Level
IV, CANSI Telemark Level III, and CSIA Alpine
Level II certifications. His article is a report on the
Technical Seminar at Domain de St-Bernard,
Mount Tremblant, December 1-6, 2005.
I
was privileged to facilitate this year’s
National XC seminar in Quebec. We had nine
participants from across the country. This old dog
learned a lot from these people, made new
friendships and nourished existing ones. In this article I will
share my impressions as well as some comments from the
participants. I asked everybody to make a comment or two
for this story.

J’ai eu le privilège d’être le facilitateur

fond au Québec. Nous avions neuf participants de partout au pays. Ce
vieux singe a appris beaucoup de ces gens, s’est fait de nouvelles
amitiés et a nourri d’anciennes. Dans cet article, je partagerai mes
impressions, ainsi que les commentaires des participants. J’ai demandé
à tous de faire un commentaire ou deux pour cette histoire.

My name is Michael Moran, a CANSI level 4 XC that
has been active since 1979. I find these types of seminars
very useful as they help hone my skills both as a skier and
an instructor. Even the young new members offer us more
experienced members great new skill development drills. I
encourage any person who interested in improving their
professionalism in the ski industry to attend one of these
seminars at every opportunity both for their benefit and to
help develop their fellow instructors.

In the midst of reminiscing about the “step-turn shuffle”
and contemplating the “offset meringue” on the bottom of
the bunny hill at Tremblant, there was definitely evidence of
“old dogs” (so to speak) learning new tricks. Throughout
the two days at the PDP seminar, many new drills and
skills were demo-ed, invented, and most importantly
shared. The east met the west and the younger met the
more experienced. And in the spirit of making our goals
publically known in order to help them to happen, I would
like to go now and facilitate more collaboration between
senior instructors in my local area. (Ottawa area
instructors look out!). Happy trails!

Je me nomme Mike Moran, niveau IV CANSI en ski de fond et actif
depuis 1979. Je trouve que ces genres de séminaires sont très utiles
puisqu’ils aident à polir mes habiletés, tant comme skieur que comme
moniteur. Même les jeunes nouveaux membres nous montrent à nous
les membres d’expérience, de très bons nouveaux exercices de
développement. J’encourage toute personne intéressée à améliorer
son professionnalisme dans l’industrie du ski à assister à un de ces
séminaires à chaque occasion, tant pour son perfectionnement que
pour aider les autres moniteurs au leur.

En me rappelant le « pas tournant traînant » et en contemplant la
« meringue du pas de montée » au bas de la pente des petits à
Tremblant, il y avait définitivement « un vieux singe » (on peut dire) qui
apprenait de nouveaux trucs. Au cours des deux journées du

D’un répit du DVD XC Zone presque terminé, à voir comment le
nouveau Manuel du directeur de stage changera la façon dont le ski est

Mont-Tremblant était l’endroit par excellence pour travailler nos
exercices pour techniques de descente (et de montée). La camaraderie
et les avantages d’une rencontre entre moniteurs de différentes régions
sont probablement les meilleures choses qu’on rapporte chez nous.
Mais l’hospitalité, la chance d’exercer notre français, et l’excellente
bière du Québec ont aussi rendu ces 3 jours inoubliables!

From a sneak peek at the almost-finalized XC Zone
DVD, to seeing how the new Course Conductor Manual is
going to change the way skiing is marked on CANSI
courses, this was the place to see what’s new and exciting
with CANSI. For the XC Seminar, Mt. Tremblant was an
excellent place to work on our downhill (and uphill!) skills.
The camaraderie and benefits of meeting other instructors
from different regions is probably the greatest thing to
come home with. But the hospitality, chance to practice

levels 3’s with great teaching and skiing skills, who are our leaders of
some French, and great Québec beer also made for a
memorable 3 days!

during our recent 3-4 seminar in Quebec. You are a
talented skier and far more important, a strong facilitator

As you can see from the comments, there was some
good energy at this session. There was not much snow, so
we made the best of it by skiing in the back yard of our
house (it was a big back yard), affectionately named “La
Jardin de Domain de St-Bernard”. We also tried Grey
Rocks, but it was pretty desperate there as well. We found
some good snow at the bunny hill at Mount Tremblant and
spent most of the two days there skiing up and down the
small piste.

Despite encouragement from Maurice, I refused to take
the magic carpet up and treated my legs (and those foolish
enough to join me) to many climbs up and down this hill.
This seminar was the most technologically enabled with
banks of laptop computers, stills and moving digital images
at our disposal as we bombarded our senses with many
types of ski related stimuli. There was also screening of
the evaluation copy of “Ski Your Best” DVD, produced by
xczone.tv. This is a very professional piece of work that
should be promoted heavily by every CANSI member once
it comes out in early 2006.
Despite the snow challenges, this was a very enjoyable
seminar and a real joy to facilitate. I salute the vision of
John Gallagher for creating this concept. I encourage
every CANSI instructor to attend a National Seminar
whenever possible, as it is a valuable professional
development experience. I would also like to mention two
up and coming CANSI professionals, Karen Messenger
and Steve Gentles. These two Ontario skiers are dynamic
the future!

Comme vous le constatez d’après les commentaires, il y avait une
bonne énergie dans cette session. Il n’y avait pas beaucoup de neige,
alors nous avons fait ce que nous pouvions dans la cour de notre
maison (une grande cour), nommée avec affection « Le jardin du
Domaine de St-Bernard ». Nous avons aussi essayé Gray Rocks, mais
c’était assez désespéré aussi. Nous avons trouvé une bonne neige sur
la pente des petits à Mont-Tremblant et y avons passé la plupart des
deux jours à y skier des allers-retours.
Malgré les encouragements de Maurice, j’ai refusé de monter sur le
tapis magique et j’ai payé la traite à mes jambes (ainsi que ceux assez
fous pour se joindre à moi) à de nombreuses montées et descentes sur
cette côte. Ce séminaire a été très techno avec plein de portables, des
images fixes et en mouvement à notre disposition, bombardant nos
sens de nombreux stimulus en matière de ski. Nous avons aussi
visionné la copie de travail du DVD « Ski Your Best », produit par
XCZone.tv. C’est du bon travail très professionnel qui, quand il sortira
au début de 2006, devrait recevoir une bonne promotion par tous les
membres de CANSI.
Malgré le manque de neige, ce séminaire a été très plaisant et une
pure joie comme facilitateur. Je salue la vision de John Gallagher pour
la création de ce concept. J’encourage chaque moniteur de CANSI à
assister au séminaire national lorsque c’est possible, étant une
expérience professionnelle de développement valable. J’aimerais aussi
mentionner deux professionnels CANSI pleins de promesses, Karen
Messenger et Steve Gentles. Ces deux skieurs de l’Ontario sont de

La gestion des risques pour les moniteurs de ski de
fond
The English text is titled Risk Management for XC Ski Instructors and may be
found in the Fall 2006 Issue of XCitation.
En tant que moniteur, nous tentons constamment de fournir une expérience d’apprentissage positive à nos élèves. Nous sommes
conscients du temps qu’il fait, du terrain et du niveau d’habileté ou de forme physique de nos élèves afin qu’ils ne soient pas exposés à
des risques inutiles dans le cadre d’une leçon. Nous prenons des précautions semblables pour nous protéger des blessures.
Souvent oubliés, cependant, les risques de pertes financières par litige si un élève est blessé pendant une leçon. Bien que notre
police d’assurance couvre tous les membres actifs de CANSI pour responsabilité, nous devrions être conscient de ce type de risque
comme nous le sommes des risques de blessures physiques plus familières pour nous.
Le Conseil d’administration de CANSI a étudié les pratiques de gestion de risques, incluant une consultation avec des experts des lois

Une bonne partie est uniquement une bonne planification de leçon. Soyez vigilants par rapport à votre environnement et choisissez le
terrain selon vos élèves. Assurez-vous qu’ils soient informés de tout risque possible du ski de fond avant de commencer la leçon.
(Au risque de rappeler ce qui est évident, le télémark et autres techniques de descente sont une tout autre histoire. Ces activités ne
doivent jamais être nommées « à bas risque ».)
Expliquez les risques à vos élèves. La plupart des skieurs voient le ski de fond comme activité à bas risque. Toutefois, croyez-le ou
non, nous avons eu des fractures de jambe en faisant l’exercice de « la trottinette ». Non, je ne suggère pas de leur dire qu’ils pourraient
se fracturer une jambe en faisant la trottinette! Devenons craintifs et ne sortons plus de la maison! Cependant, énoncer que le ski de fond
est une activité physique et bien que les risques de blessure soient minces, ils existent quand même, est une bonne présentation.
3. Demandez aux élèves s’ils comprennent et sont à l’aise avec ce niveau de risque. Prenez le temps de leur faire lire l’information
décrite dans les documents mentionnés plus bas et de poser toute question avant le début de la leçon.
Enfin, demandez à vos élèves de remplir les formulaires de renonciation par rapport à l’activité. Le Centre pour le sport et la loi
(www.sportlaw.ca) a développé trois formulaires de renonciation à utiliser par les moniteurs de CANSI et les directeurs de stage. Nous
suggérons que ces formulaires soient utilisés pour toutes les leçons individuelles ou de groupe et aux stages de formation de moniteurs
pendant la saison 2005-2006. Les formulaires peuvent être visionnés ou téléchargés de www.cansi.ca.

Nous n’essayons pas de vous faire peur; c’est un peu intimidant quand vous commencez à
énumérer les choses terribles qui peuvent arriver sur la neige. Cependant, cette approche nous permet d’éclaircir
quels sont les risques pour telle ou telle leçon. Une leçon de « bosses au télémark » contient des risques plus grands de fracture à une
jambe que le « pas alternatif dans l’allée du troisième trou ». Il faut leur laisser savoir.

(Canadian Ski Council, Toronto, ON) The Canadian Ski Council National marketing Committee and Board of Directors have set dates
for Canada's next National Ski & Snowboard Week: January 14-22, 2006.
What: National Ski & Snowboard Week (NSSW) is an annual celebration of skiing and snowboarding. It is an opportunity for ski
and snowboard areas across Canada to conduct festivals, organize events, coordinate competitions, throw parties and offer discounts and
incentives under a common, instantly recognized theme.
No matter who you are or where you live, NSSW encourages Canadians to get out there and ski or snowboard!
When: NSSW is traditionally held the second week of every January. It is designed to kick off winter. The next Canada-wide
festival will take place January 14-22, 2006.
Who: Every person working in the Canadian ski and snowboard industry is encouraged to participate in some way. Events,
competitions, equipment demonstrations and discounts help liven up ski areas in January-traditionally one of the quietest winter months for
most ski area operators. Contact the Canadian Ski Council (CSC) for advice and suggestions on how to organize events and specials.
Where: Every ski area in Canada is encouraged to participate. . Let's make this a true country-wide celebration.

Motion: CANSI Pacific Second Mike Moran. To make the Telemark Level 1 course 24 hours long and add a module on guest
experience and professionalism. Rationale: This is also to accommodate the large class size that some regions experience. More time is
needed to give a high level of instruction to the students. Regions can work on the timing depending on class sizes. If we give a strong
module on guest experience and professionalism at this point, the student can build on this through the next levels. Since CANSI also has
the majority of students taking level One courses, we can improve on CANSI as a professional organization with this change. Motion

Motion: Glen Lee Second: Steve Gentles. To integrate elements of the CSIA guest experience content into our Level 1 Telemark and
Cross Country Courses. This will be effective for the 2006-2007 season. Motion Carried
Action: Mark Simpson To communicate with Normand Lapierre to seek permission to utilize appropriate elements of the CSIA guest
experience content.
Action: Glenn Lee: To develop a written module to be included in all pre-course material for all courses. This module will be piloted this
season with full implementation in the 2006-2007 season.
Motion: Norman Thibault Second Glenn Lee. To ask the National Board to strike a committee that would be given the mandate to
approach the CSIA to discuss all the possibilities and benefits of an alliance with the CSIA. There was considerable discussion regarding
the need to ensure that the integrity and reputation of our Cross Country programs are also enhanced by this initiative. Carried

The International Ski Instructors Association arranges reciprocity agreements between the sport’s governing bodies in
different countries. However it only recognizes one such body in each country, in our case the CSIA. We will need to address this with and
through the CSIA. This motion originated in a request to recognize a PSIA (US) Instructor. We will try to develop an arrangement with them
based on geographical proximity and an already close connection between CANSI and the American body. Under such an agreement an
individual might be recognized as an instructor but would need to apprentice and attend a CC seminar before being eligible to examine
courses.

A skier may apply to the Technical Committee to be assessed for a skill level greater than Level I. With the committee’s
consent, a course examiner of the applicable level can assess the applicant’s skill level through an appropriate on-snow session. If the
examiner is satisfied the individual’s skills are at the desired level he or she can indicate so to the applicable technical committee, Regional
for Level II (XC and tele), National for XC Levels III and IV and Telemark Level III. The applicant may then be invited to attend, at full cost,
the appropriate course. Successful candidates would still need to apprentice, etc before being certified to conduct courses.
Suitable protocols need to be developed to sufficiently outline this process. The practice will not be instituted until such protocols are in
place.

Proposition de Glenn Lee, appuyée par Henry Madsen : Que le budget, la logistique, le recrutement et la compensation des
facilitateurs pour les séminaires nationaux techniques soient la responsabilité exclusive du Comité technique. Proposition acceptée
Action : Richard Haywood doit demander la réconciliation du solde précédent des comptes d’Interski et du Comité technique.
Approbation des directeurs de stages
Tous les critères suivants doivent s’appliquer lors de la sélection des directeurs de stages (extraits du Manuel du directeur de stage,
édition de mai 2004) :
1. Les habiletés pour les démonstrations de ski sont au niveau approprié.
2. La pleine compréhension de la biomécanique de la technique de ski.
3. La pleine connaissance des critères d’évaluation technique.
4. L’aptitude supérieure au transfert des habiletés.
5. La représentation de CANSI de manière professionnelle.
6. L’assistance à un cours d’appoint pour examinateurs au cours des deux dernières années.
7. Avoir été assistant lors d’un stage et avoir reçu l’approbation du directeur de stage pour ce niveau et le ou les niveaux plus
bas.
Pendant la saison 2005-2006, les membres suivants sont reconnus pour diriger un stage national dans leur discipline respective.
Atlantique : ski de fond, Keith Nicol
Québec : ski de fond, Maurice Mondoux, Carmen Archambault; télémark, Stéphane Perreault
Ontario : ski de fond, Mike Moran, Jean-Pierre Lavoie

Révision du Manuel du directeur de stage
Proposition de Mark Simpson, appuyée par Richard Haywood : Qu’un comité soit formé pour mettre la dernière main au Manuel du
directeur de stage pour la saison 2005-2006 et pour l’élaboration d’un brouillon avant le 23 décembre 2005. Le brouillon sera distribué
pour recevoir l’approbation finale par le Comité technique avant le 15 janvier 2006. La copie définitive sera distribuée à toutes les régions
après l’approbation. Proposition acceptée
Le Comité technique a le plaisir de nommer Mark Simpson, Karla Wikjord et Henry Madsen à ce comité.

2006, Sovereign Lakes ski de fond, niveaux II-III du 7 au 12 mars 2006, Hollyburn/Lost Lake ski de fond, niveaux II-III aux dates à
déterminer, Manning Park; télémark, niveaux II-III du 23 au 26 mars 2006, Whitewater.
Proposition de Mike Moran, appuyée par Glenn Lee : D’approuver les dates des stages et les détails mentionnés. Proposition

Révision du Manuel du moniteur
Proposition de Richard Haywood, appuyée par Glenn Lee : D’approuver l’édition de décembre 2005 du Manuel du moniteur CANSI.
La version anglaise en format PDF (uniquement), disponible pour chaque participant à un stage de tout niveau pour la saison 2005-2006.
La version française sera produite dans le meilleur délai. Proposition acceptée
Action: Richard Haywood a entamé une discussion au sujet de la protection du droit d’auteur du matériel fourni par l’AMSC. Tous
présents étaient d’accord pour nous assurer que ce matériel n’est pas utilisé ou copié de façon inappropriée. Richard ajoutera une note
de remerciement dans le prochain XCitation et une note spécifique concernant les droits d’auteur sera ajoutée lors de la révision du
prochain manuel.

Proposition de CANSI Pacifique, appuyée par Mike Moran : D’allonger le stage de niveau I télémark à 24 heures et d’ajouter un
module sur l’expérience d’un invité et son professionnalisme. Raisonnement : Ceci est aussi pour accommoder les classes nombreuses
qu’il y a dans certaines régions. Plus de temps est requis pour donner de l’enseignement de haut niveau aux élèves. Les régions peuvent
travailler sur la durée selon la taille des classes. Si nous donnons un solide module sur l’expérience et le professionnalisme d’un invité à
ce stade-ci, l’élève pourra construire sur ceci vers les prochains niveaux. Puisque CANSI a aussi une majorité d’élèves s’inscrivant au
niveau I, avec ce changement, nous pouvons nous améliorer en tant qu’organisation professionnelle. Proposition refusée
Proposition de Glen Lee, appuyée par Steve Gentles : D’intégrer les éléments du contenu de l’expérience d’un invité de l’AMSC dans
les stages de niveau I télémark et ski de fond. Ceci prendra effet pour la saison 2006-2007.Proposition acceptée
Action : Mark Simpson devra communiquer avec Normand Lapierre pour demander la permission d’utiliser les éléments appropriés du
contenu de l’expérience d’un invité de l’AMSC.
Action : Glenn Lee devra développé un module écrit à être inclus dans le matériel de tous les stages préparatoires. Cette saison, ce
sera un module-pilote et l’implantation se fera pour la saison 2006-2007.
Proposition de Normand Thibault, appuyée par Glenn Lee : De demander au Conseil national de former un comité avec mandat
d’approcher l’AMSC pour discuter de toutes les possibilités et avantages d’une alliance avec l’AMSC. Il y a eu beaucoup de discussions
au sujet du besoin de nous assurer que l’intégrité et la réputation de nos programmes de ski de fond soient rehaussées par cette initiative.
Proposition acceptée
Action : Richard Haywood devra présenter cette proposition au Conseil d’administration national en décembre 2005.
Proposition de Keith Nicol, appuyée par Steve Gentles : Que les critères d’évaluation soient changés tels que les candidats au niveau I
télémark devront obtenir une note satisfaisante à la technique de télémark parallèle. Proposition acceptée
Action : Mark Simpson demande que le stage télémark II soit décrit comme un 40 heures et que le télémark III soit décrit comme un 48
heures, et que tout le matériel écrit (incluant le Manuel du directeur de stage) soit changé pour refléter la durée du stage. (Calendrier des
stages de la région du Pacifique).
Action : Richard Haywood devra étudier des méthodes alternatives et la durée des réunions du Comité technique et du séminaire
national combinés et présenter des recommandations au Comité technique à la prochaine réunion (16 janvier 2006). Une solution
discutée était de déplacer le tout à une réunion de printemps sur neige.
Présentation de l’Ontario sur les objectifs et le processus du Trillium Grant
Glenn a donné un aperçu des objectifs et du processus de cette initiative. Cette information est couramment disponible sur le site
Web de CANSI.

Discussion au sujet des candidats qui visent un stage de plus haut niveau de
CANSI
Il y a eu discussion concernant ce processus. La politique pour les candidats qui se présentent à un stage pour lequel ils n’ont pas la
certification courante prérequise appropriée est décrite dans les extraits suivants en italique.
Proposition de Tiffany, appuyée par Keith : Que CANSI étudie et adopte réciproquement les certifications de moniteurs de d’autres
organisations. Discussion : L’Association internationale des moniteurs de ski arrange des ententes de réciprocité entre des entités
sportives dans différents pays. Cependant, elle reconnaît seulement une seule organisation dans chaque pays, dans notre cas, l’AMSC.
Nous devrons nous pencher sur ceci avec et par l’entremise de l’AMSC. Cette proposition a pris origine par une demande d’un moniteur
de la PSIA (USA). Nous tenterons de développer un arrangement avec eux basé sur la proximité géographique et sur un proche contact
entre CANSI et l’entité américaine. Sous une telle entente, un individu peut être reconnu comme moniteur, mais devra être assistant et
assister à un séminaire de directeurs de stage avant d’être admissible à évaluer un stage. Proposition acceptée
Action :
Stéphane parlera à Normand Lapierre de l’AMSC et Keith vérifiera avec la PSIA.
Proposition de Tiffany, appuyée par Keith : Que CANSI développe des critères ou établisse des procédures (par exemple, des
prérequis, un coût, des habiletés de ski, etc.) pour les individus qui veulent obtenir l’équivalence d’un stage.Discussion : Un skieur peut
demander au Comité technique d’être évalué pour un niveau plus élevé que le niveau I. Avec l’approbation du Comité, un examinateur de
stage du niveau concerné peut évaluer le niveau d’habileté du candidat au cours d’une session sur neige appropriée. Si l’examinateur est
satisfait des habiletés de l’individu selon le niveau désiré, il ou elle peut en faire part au Comité technique concerné, régional pour le
niveau II (ski de fond et télémark), national pour les niveaux III et IV ski de fond et III télémark. Le candidat peut alors être invité à assister,
au plein coût, au stage approprié. Le candidat qui a réussi aurait quand même besoin d’être assistant, etc. avant d’être certifié pour diriger
des stages. Des protocoles adéquats doivent être développés pour décrire pleinement ce processus. Cette pratique ne sera pas instituée
avant que de tels protocoles soient élaborés. Proposition acceptée

Une conférence téléphonique aura lieu les lundis 16 janvier, 20 mars et 24 juillet. Toutes les réunions auront lieu à 18 h HNP, 19 h
HNM, 21 h HNE.
Action : Glen Lee partagera l’information sur les outils VOIP télé-conférence développés dans la région de l’Ontario.
