Now that the annual Medical Needs Foundation Spirit 5K Run/Walk
is over, we have had time to reflect about how many wonderful people
support our fundraiser. We are overwhelmed by the community
support of this event. From the runners and walkers to the racecourse
volunteers (all of whom were high school students), the bakers, the
policed officers, the ambulance attendants, the media consultants,
entertainers, and the many businesses that support our race, we are
amazed year after year by the outpouring of support for this event.
With your help, the Medical Needs Foundation is able to support
many people each year. Over the past several years, the foundation
has assisted over one hundred families by dispersing funds of over
1.25 million dollars. This would not be possible without the help of
people like you.
A special thanks goes the Wildwood School staff who, each year, hold
a bake sale for us. This year they raised $700.00 for the Medical
Needs Foundation. We appreciate the staff’s support. Thank you.

We had a beautiful day for this wonderful cause, a terrific new venue,
and a challenging course. The enthusiasm and excitement were
palpable as the Lakeland Hills YMCA crew, under the direction of
Denise Munday, warmed the runners and walkers up. DJ Brian
Robertson entertained us with terrific music, and Maura Gill provided
us with delicious snacks and drinks. What a terrific way to spend a
Sunday afternoon— meeting, running, or walking with friends, getting
some exercise, and eating some healthy snacks. If you missed the race
this year, be sure to catch it next year!
Sincerely,
Carol Marosits

Borough Dispatch Provided by LWVML
October 24: An ordinance was introduced to allow land use
ordinance enforcement, by an officer or employee designated by
the Borough Manager.
The Governor is recognizing three ML fire fighters, Reilly, Happer and DeSantis, for
their efforts in Hurricane Irene.
The well #4 renovation work currently included in the 2011 capital budget will be put
off until the spring of 2012.
Chief Tovo requested that the Council put together a subcommittee to consider the
addition of a cell tower(s) within the Borough. Mayor Gormally agreed to assemble a
committee. Councilman Jackson suggested that a Solid Waste Committee be reestablished in advance of the expiration of the current contract (late 2012).
The Woodland committee has planted chestnut trees in the courtyard at the high
school and around the borough. They also reported that the deer are expected to be
aggressively eating plants this winter, as there have not been many acorns dropping
from the trees this fall.
November 14: Abby Kimmelman, a senior at the MLHS and a competitive figure
skater said she really likes the look of the Cove. She said the argument that stone
steps at the Cove are unsafe is invalid. Skaters do not use benches to lace skates and
should not be walking on stone steps, wood steps, dirt or grass when wearing skates
as this will ruin the ice skate blades. Skaters have always sat on shoreline rocks to
lace up skates. She suggested the use of rubber mats on the stone. She looks forward
to skating at the Cove this winter with her friends and the hockey team.
Historic Preservation Ordinance: Committee studied demolition vs. invest. The rate
of demolition has increased in the last ten years. The Master Plan encourages historic
preservation and the committee wants to help Lakers preserve history. The committee
recommends incentives such as increasing FAR to 23%, change set back to a total of
50 feet for both sides, and increasing the demolition permit time to 90 days. They do
not recommend disincentives.
It costs more to renovate than to build new. If more than 50% of the home needs
renovation, it is cheaper to tear down the home. Elimination of potential variance
process (which can take 4 to 6 months) would encourage homeowners to renovate.
Council feedback was positive and they directed the committee to work on an
ordinance with the town attorney. The public will be allowed to give input in the
future.
