Zu Gott die Herrlichkeit!
“I shall walk through this world but once. Therefore, if there is any good
thing that I need to do, let me do it now. For I shall not walk this way again.”
(A poem found in the pocket of Abram Lincoln when he was assassinated)
As I step down from the presidency of the De La
Salle Alumni Association De La Salle UniversityDasmariñas Chapter, Inc., I shall go with sorrows
knowing that there are still a lot of things to be done.
However, I know in my heart that I led the Alumni
Association to great heights (like other presidents have
done before me) and as Frank Sinatra would sing “I did
it my way”. For now, it is time to give others the chance
to serve.
In retrospect, “my way” didn’t mean throwing my
weight around doing the things I want. It didn’t mean
that I arbitrarily pursued my objectives. On the contrary,
I tried practicing humility and patience, and above all,
maintaining harmony within the organization. For I firmly
believe that, “Harmony being the strength and support
of all societies…” True enough, I survived the two-year
term with my team fully intact and performing very well.
“My way” simply means I did it with style. Tatak Golla ika
nga! Going back to the concept of doing good, the Alumni
Association thru “Alumni Tulungan Center” has extended
its helping hand towards the various initiatives of the
University and the different members of the Lasallian
community. A total of almost a million pesos were
disbursed to support scholarships, career development,
infrastructure, medical and mortuary assistance,
trainings, and many other significant programs and
activities. In scholarship alone, the Alumni Association
set aside five hundred thousand pesos (Php 500,000.00)
to form part of the Alumni Scholarship Endowment Fund.
By and large, we committed ourselves to do what we
believe is good. It is the thrust of my incumbency, and
modesty aside, we know that we delivered. As aptly put
by Kahlil Gibran, “You give but little when you give of
your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that
you truly give.” Your Alumni Association led the way in
giving, it is our standing appeal to our fellow alumni to
4
follow the path. I have enumerated the accomplishments
of our team during our term in the President’s Report.
It may not be enough but it gives me a sense of fulfilment
knowing that somehow or the other we touched the
lives of our constituents. Carl Jung once said, “It is
better to be whole than to be good”. At the end of the
day, I prefer to be good than to be whole but better
yet, to be both.
It was not a perfect
stint, but it sank to me
that there are no
mistakes only lessons
learned. For those I have
wronged, my sincerest
apologies. For those
I have done
good, may you
‘pay
it
forward’.In the
final analysis,
what matters
most, is that in
future life, I will
have the portion
to hear from Him
who sits as Judge
Supreme
the
welcome
words,
“Well done thou
good and faithful
servant : enter thou
into the joy of thy
Lord.”
See you at the
Grand
Alumni
Homecoming!
Animo, La Salle!
Spotlight on 83’s and 98’s
Circa 1998
Circa 1983
Going down memory lanes
By Verniño B. Gutierrez
In case you haven’t heard a grand party is in the
works and for those in the know they’re monitoring
things like a hawk on a prey. Let me fill you in on some
tidbits about the cause of our celebration. It’s in honor
of our beloved Silver Jubilee celebrants from Batch ’83
that the fun fares are blown. They say that it takes a
village to raise a child, let’s take a look at the condition
of the village to which our celebrants have been born
into, shall we?
A perfect concoction to keep a party going is to fill it
with spirits. Not the kind though that we all think hides
under our beds when we were small or the discotheque
up in summer capital Baguio City. I’m talking about
some good old fashioned booze. Tanduay Rhum is one
good example. For your amusement I was able to find
out that it’s one of the most awarded rum produced in
the Philippines and it is in 1983 that they bagged most
of the awards. But don’t get me wrong, liquor of any
kind was and still prohibited in campus. Much more
don’t expect a Tanduay to be served during the
homecoming. Hi! Hi! Hi! Of course we’re aware that
1983 was a dangerous time in Philippine history. In
August of 1983 Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. was
assassinated. As Ninoy once said “ The Filipino people
is worth dying for.” The media was released from its
shackles and the whole world saw a nation in mourning.
That event led eventually to the historic Edsa Revolution
of 1986. What a time it was. Back in school, in 1983,
the name of our institution then was Emilio Aguinaldo
College with the late Dr. Paulo C. Campos as its
president. Some faces during those great times are
still around now in De La Salle University-Dasmariñas
like Dr. Laura R. Campos who was the Asst. Dean of
Student Affairs, Dr. Myrna F. Ramos who was the
Secretary of the Division of Arts and Science, and
faculty members Mr. Ricarte Balayo, Mr. Bienvenido
Ramirez Jr., and Mr. Liberato Lontoc.
Of course a party is only as good as the dashing
debonair and graciousness of its host so without further
ado let me introduce you to our Alumni homecoming
host, Batch 1998. From the fun times of 1983 let’s move
forward to more familiar times. Let me take a peek
from what I can remember during this time.It was in
January 8, 1998 that Ramzi Yousef was sentenced to
life imprisonment for the planning of the World Trade
Center bombing. Shortly after that another bomb hit the
US. Then President Bill Clinton denied on American
television “Having sexual relations with that woman
(Monica Lewinsky)”. I recalled looking at one Lewinsky
cigar which became very fashionable then. How could
you forget Titanic, the 1998 Academy Award best picture
winner. It was also in 1998 that famed Japanese
director Akira Kurosawa passed away. I have to admit
to having been ignorant of the late director’s genius back
then but after seeing his movie “Ran” I got to understand
what a great talent Asia just lost. This was the year
when we celebrated our centennial of independence
with the theme “Kalayaan: Kayamanan ng Bayan”. In
DLSU-D, our campus was part of the De La Salle
University-System with the late Br. Andrew Gonzales
as president and Dr. Herminia Torres as executive vice
president. This was a year of new vigor in student
activities as the team of Office of Student Affairs were
composed of dynamic workers headed by the late Mrs.
Felicitacion A. Antonio. This was the year of the women
as it saw the election and appointment of female student
leaders such as Ivy Morales, president of the Supreme
Student Council and Nohrin Evangelista, editor in chief
of Heraldo Filipino.
I wish I could spend more time picking brain with you
but time is a luxury we don’t have. Let’s treasure and
savor it. Raise your glasses as we salute the glorious
past that has come alive at the present. Our salute to
Batches ’83 and ’98! Animo, La Salle!

Golla presents
chapter projects
in World Congress VI
The president of De La Salle Alumni Association De La
Salle University-Dasmariñas Chapter, Inc. Nathaniel S. Golla
participated in the De La Salle Alumni Association World
Congress in Toronto, Canada on May 24-27, 2007.
Alumni Orientation Year 4
The Alumni Orientation 2008is now on its fourth
year. There were one thousand four hundred four (1,404)
graduating students who participated the program held
on March 4,5,6 and 8, 2008 at the Severino delas Alas
Hall, De La Salle University-Dasmariñas.
The alumni orientation is basically designed to give
new members information regarding their membership
in the Alumni Association. Important matters were
discussed including among other things their rights
and privileges, the programs and activities, and how
could they contribute to the initiatives of the Alumni
Association. The facilitators were the collegiate alumni
officers headed by the respective presidents.
The alumni orientation was first launched on a
systematic implementation on 2005 during the
presidency of Dr. Alvin D. Crudo.
In day 3, Golla presented the major projects of DLSAA
DLSU-D Chapter, Inc. which included its community outreach
aptly entitled “Alumni Tulungan Center”, the collegiate
homecomings coined “Kapihan”, and the environmental
initiative “Greening the Roots.” The presentation of Golla
garnered applause among delegates coming from the United
States of America, Canada, and Philippines. As the official
and sole delegate of the chapter, Golla casted his vote to
elect the new officers of DLSAA. In an overwhelming support,
Johnny Valdes was elected president.
The Word Congress happens every two years and hosted
alternately by chapters here and abroad. World Congress
VI with the theme “It’s Green and Go to Toronto” was hosted
by the DLSAA Toronto Chapter headed by its president Tom
Mascardo. The 7th World Congress will be on May 2009 in
Los Angeles.
Alumni Scholarship Endowment Fund created
Through Board of Trustees Resolution dated February 12, 2008, the De La Salle Alumni Association De
La Salle University-Dasmariñas Chapter, Inc. created the Alumni Scholarship Endowment Fund. As seed
money, the Alumni Association donated five hundred thousand pesos (Php 500,000) to the said fund.
The idea to create such fund was proposed by Deodoro Abiog II, vice president for finance, to fine-tune
the existing scholarship scheme that benefits the immediate relatives of alumni. For the moment, there are
six (6) scholars and one of whom is the sister of an alumnus.
The Alumni Association hopes to increase the number of scholars by encouraging alumni to contribute to
the Alumni Scholarship Endowment Fund.

OUTSTANDING ALUMNI 2008 OUTSTANDING ALUMNI
Ms. Marian Rivera
Hon. Jennifer N. Austria-Barzaga
Hon. Mark Llandro L. Mendoza
To my fellow alumni:
I am extremely overwhelmed of being conferred
as an Outstanding Alumnus in the field of Public Service
by the Board of Trustees and Executive Council of the
De La Salle Alumni Association, Dasmariñas Chapter,
Inc. My sincerest gratitude to the entire De La Salle
community for the recognition and commendation.
I wouldn’t be where I am now if not for the wisdom
and values DLSU- Dasmariñas instilled on me. I thank
you because you played a vital part in the success that
I am reaping at the moment. Everything I learned from
my Alma Mater honed and molded me to become a
better person that I am today. Be assured that as
Municipal Mayor of Dasmariñas I would be steadfast
to my commitment as a public servant and that I would
live by the morals and principles of De La Salle
University.
To all DLSU alumni, may you continue to make a
difference and create a positive change in the lives of
the people around you. Be an inspiration…be a
blessing. To everyone, I share with you this award……
ANIMO LA SALLE!
HON. JENNIFER A. BARZAGA
Municipal Mayor
Dasmariñas, Cavite
I am overwhelmed by the award conferred on me as
one of the Outstanding Alumni of De La Salle University in
the field of public service. As the elected representative of
the fourth district of Batangas, I try my best to respond to
what our people expect from their leaders. I know that as
a lawmaker, my primary mandate is to actively participate
in the crafting of laws that will benefit our country and our
people. Having gone around my district I have, however,
witnessed the situation of our constituents and realized
that if I were to live up to the Christian teachings of my
alma mater I may have to do more than what is expected
of a mere legislator; I will have to respond with haste to
their present situation or predicament.
I have thus used my Priority Development Assistance
Fund, otherwise known as pork barrel, in answer to the
demands of my most needy constituents. My work is
transparent and anyone may examine how I have allocated
my pork barrel for education, infrastructure, medical
assistance for indigent patients, and others. Humility aside,
I believe that my fellow Lasallian alumni will find that I have
proved the people correct in voting for me.
Thank you very much for this distinction. I pray that I
will continue to do La Salle proud as I continue to perform
my tasks as an elected official of this country.
Animo, La Salle!

The President’s Report
T
o my fellow alumni, it is with great pride and honor
to present to you the accomplishments of the Board of
Trustees and the Executive Council of your De La Salle
Alumni Association De La Salle University-Dasmariñas
Chapter, Inc. Under my watch, we strived hard to
improve our initiatives and services. I know that we did
it “all for the love of thee”.
Number one on my list, is the creation of the Alumni
Scholarship Endowment Fund designed to benefit the
underprivileged but deserving students. On this regard,
the Alumni Association donated five hundred thousand
pesos (Php 500,000.00) as seed money for this
purpose. Also during my incumbency, we were able to
enact policy by which the beneficiary of the Alumni
Scholarship is the immediate relative of the alumni. The
first beneficiary is Ms. Monica V. Pineda, HRM1-1, sister
of Rommel V. Pineda, a graduate of BSBA Economics
Batch 2007. It is my fervent hope that you help us
increase the number of our scholars by contributing to
the Alumni Scholarship Endowment Fund.
The Alumni Association has also contributed in the
various projects and activities of the University and the
different sectors of the Lasallian community. A total of
three hundred thirty six thousand two hundred seventy
one pesos (Php 336, 271.00) was spent for different
endeavors such as medical and mortuary assistance,
career development, alumni assemblies,
infrastructures, among others.
The Alumni Association has also spearheaded or
co-sponsored projects and activities in partnership with
the different offices. Just to enumerate some, the
Career Seminar Series with Guidance and Counseling
Office, the Grand Homecoming of Former SPREAD
Scholars with the Student Admissions Office, the
Accountancy Alumni Assembly with the Accounting
Department, and the Resource Mobilization Program
of the Vice Chancellor for Mission, External Affairs and
Development Office. Other milestones accomplished
by the Alumni Association were in collaboration with the
Alumni Relations and Placement Office such as the
Alumni Portal which is a state-of-the-art platform for
career matching and the Alumni Database that hosts
twenty thousand five hundred fifty (20, 550) profiles.
I am extremely elated to report to you that since we
assumed office in 2006 there are nine hundred sixty
three (963) alumni who returned to visit the Alumni Office
and our campus. The number does not include the
14
14
attendees of the alumni homecomings which has also
tremendously increased. Also, our new alumni card is
honored in one hundred thirty six (136) establishments
for perks and privileges. It is my challenge to the would
be elected officers to include discounts in the purchase
of medicines and in payment of tuition fee in Lasallian
schools. It is a dream but it is not impossible,it is doable.
In our two-year term, the Alumni Association has
managed nine (9) collegiate homecomings and two (2)
grand alumni homecomings. I would like to personally
commend the efforts of the Vice President for
Homecoming Joel Espedido and the Collegiate
Presidents for making the homecomings successful
and meaningful. It is also noteworthy that the Alumni
Association has given citations to alumni for their
exemplary performance in their chosen fields. Let me
congratulate this year’s awardees of the Outstanding
Alumni in the different fields, Ms. Marian Rivera in the
field of entertainment, Hon. Mayor Jenny Barzaga in
the field of public service, and specially to my worthy
brother and classmate in PNPA Tagapagpatupad Class
of 1992 , Hon. Congressman Mark Llandro Mendoza
also in the field of public service. Our awardees are
our role models as they continue to exemplify the
Lasallian motto of being “Christian Achievers for God
and Country”.
Finally, I would also like to express my deepest
gratitude to all the members of the Board of Trustees
led by the chairman Dr. Alvin Crudo, thank you for your
vote of trust and confidence. To the Executive Council
and College Presidents and Representatives, I could
not have pulled it off without your genuine support. To
the alumni staff and scholars, job well done people!
There are a lot of things to be done and I’m sure
those who would take our place will strive harder and
do better. For now, I offer our accomplishments, first
and foremost, to the Great Architect of the Universe
and to you my fellow alumni, my fellow Lasallians! To
God be the Glory!
Animo, La Salle!

ILOG
isang oras. At tuwing mahinahon kaming nakikipag-usap at
makatarungang lipunan.
isang Lasalyanong paghubog o edukasyon? Pangalawa, lubos
masukat at maunawaan.
Education is a mission and a ministry at the service of God,
the Church and Society, and directed towards integral Human
and Christian development and liberation.”
maka-tao, maka-Kristyano at mapagpalayang paghuhubog.
at pamayanan.
pamilya?kapwa?at pamayanan?
Maraming
paraan
upang
maisakatuparan ito tulad ng pagiging
maagap at masipag sa trabaho,
pagiging masunurin sa mga batas,
pagbabahagi ng tulong sa mga
nangangailangan at marami pang
iba.
maka-Diyos, makatao, at
makabayan ay bahagi ng
Lasalyanong paghubog. At
kapansanan, at iba pa.
(working with like minded elements of society).
makatotohanan at mapayapa.
isang makatao, maka-Diyos at makabayang edukasyon?
pangangailan.

for the renewal of the church and for the integral development
of society.”
dinanas noon. Sana rin, sa iyong sariling pamamaraan ay
aktibo at makahulugan kang nakikibahagi sa pagpapanibago
ng ating lipunan upang gawain itong mas makatao, maka
Diyos at makabayan.
bansa. Ika nga, “the only thing for evil to prosper, is for good
men to do nothing.”
