His A&S in N.Y. Sells
50 A Year To Latins
Selling films for over 20 years to
Latin America and still going
strong is the word from A&S Motion Pictures International Corp.,
presided over by Argentinian Alberto Sabetay. Product handled has
been almost exclusively from Yank
indie companies, but Sabetay is attending Cannes Film Festival in
May to expand-purchases. He
handled some 50 titles last year with
Latin America, dealing with such
major distribs as Transeuropa,
Transmundo and Centuria in Argentina, Cine Colombia in Colombia, Empresas Cines Unidos in
Venezuela and others.
Sabetay said that he was also
hyping contacts for sales of pix to
Spain. Released by banner over the
past year have been such films as
"Camille 2000," "Land Raiders,"
"Billy Boy," "Bitter Honey" (latter shot in Spanish), "Brother of
Blood." "Alice Sweet Alice," "Fifth
Season." "Little Mother,"
"George," "Carmen Baby" and
"Journey Into Fear." Some of
above were produced by Falcon International in Gotham.
Tuesday Weld joins James Caan
in "Thief." rolling March 24 in Chicago under director Michael Mann,
who also scripted. United Artists
will release and Jerry Bruckheimer and Ronnie Caan are producing.

Puerto Rico."
Greco commented that first
Latins had gone to labs in other
places such as Miami and Puerto
Rico, but that in the long run they
realized they'd get better and more
reliable work done in New York.
Last year TVC handled about 12
features, compared to only three
from Latin America the year before. In addition lab processed
about 18 documentaries and over
100 commercials. About 70% of
work came from Puerto Rico,
Colombia and Santo Domingo.
"Our only real competition is in
Venezuela," he added, "but we do
chemtone process which they don't.
We ran off seven CRIs for the Julio
Iglesias pic "Every Day One Day."
Billings from the Latin area in 1979
were over $1,000,000."
Greco said one of the main reasons customers were drawn to New
York was that prices were considerably lower than in Latin
America. "We can make a negative for cheaper than what you'd
pay for a print down there. Raw
stock too is far more expensive in
Latin America, Europe and Australia than it is here. A 90-minute
feature here last year cost only
about $800. It'd cost you $2,400 to do
a print for a pic like 'Les Petites
Fugues' in Switzerland; we did the
negative for $4,000.
The TVC director also mentioned that he has a team of Spanish and Yank technicians working
in the lab and that his dealings with
Hispanos has proved an eye-opener. "The Latinos I've dealt with
have all been scrupulously honest.
A handshake is good enough.
There's no contract needed, but
they're very cautious. Either they
trust you or they don't,

sensation in Buenos Aires than
Sarli's films was an incident that
made headlines throughout the
country last December. At a reception organized by the National
Film Institute, Isabel Sarli, sporting
a dress which left no doubt as to the
prodigality of nature, got involved
in a conversation with a priest, Father Daniel Zaffaroni, who does a
video program called "Mass For
Artists.'' Sarli reportedly asked him
something about the bringing up of
her son: the priest in turn asked
whether she wasn't ashamed to be
flouncing her allures so shamelessly, upon which Sarli let go with a
slap across the priest's face which
resounded through the whole room,
and later through the whole country.
