INTRODUCTION TO ASIA DIVE EXPO (ADEX) CHINA 2015 ABOUT ADEX Boasting a history of 20 years, ADEX is the longest running dive show in Asia and is the only event to be endorsed by major organisations in the industry, such as the Diving Equipment & Marketing Association (DEMA), Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and Singapore Underwater Federation (SUF). Organized by Underwater3some Group, ADEX is held annually in Singapore and features speakers, exhibitors and visitors from all around the world, as well as workshops, presentations, demonstrations, dive pools and dive tanks. Earlier in 2015, there was a record-‐breaking 41,053 total visitors over the three days at ADEX Singapore, of which 57% were locals while the remaining 43% were foreign tourists hailing from 64 different countries. ADEX CHINA 2015 With the succession in Singapore, ADEX expanded to China in 2014 and in 2015, ADEX China was successfully co-‐organised by Underwater3some and Beijing BeiAo Convention & Exhibition Co., Ltd. Taking place over three days from September 11 to 13, 2015, the dive expo consisted of programmes related to recreational diving, free diving, tekdiving, underwater photography and marine conservation efforts, including presentations by world-‐renowned photographers focusing on their passions and their work. Together with the sales of diving products, gears, underwater equipment, diving trips etc all under one roof, this attracted both diving enthusiaists and organizations that have businesses in the diving industry from all around the region, having a total of 10,442 visitors over the three days. ABOUT UNDERWATER3SOME uw3some is the platform for divers created by Asian Geographic Magazines Pte Ltd, where divers come to get information about the region’s diving and to share their experiences with other divers. It is also a partnership between the three giants of the dive industry of the Asia-‐Pacific region: Scuba Diver AUSTRALASIA/OCEAN PLANET, Asian Diver and ADEX. Combined, these three champions of the sea bring over 75 years of scuba diving experience to the table. ABOUT BEIAO CONVENTION & EXHIBITION Beiao Convention & Exhibition was established in 2003. Customer-‐oriented and pursuit of excellence are the targets of the company since its foundation. Expertise and standardization are the principles they provide service to their accounts. Beiao’s core businesses are to organize conventions, exhibitions and sports events by themselves or for their clients. Their customers mainly come from national organizations, local and international companies and world organizations. 3 For Circulation OFFICIAL PUBLICATION ADEX China official publication, Scuba Diver AUSTRALASIA, is a regionally focussed magazine, staying true to its roots with its editorial exclusively covering Asia-‐Pacific, with one story from Australia in each and every issue. Scuba Diver AUSTRALASIA specialises in dive travel and marine conservation, and is the official media partner of Divers Alert Network (DAN) Asia-‐Pacific. Scuba Diver magazine is taking print to the next level. The pages of the magazine now come to life with digital content through the magic of modern technology. Using their smartphones and the ADEX SCAN, readers can unlock multi-‐media content such as videos, image slideshows, and audio. Scuba Diver is bringing the industry into the 21st Century. ABOUT THE ASIAN DIVER AND SCUBA DIVER CHINESE E-‐MAGAZINE The world of diving cuts across borders and cultures. Increasingly, Mandarin-‐speaking divers from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia are becoming regular visitors to destinations across Asia-‐ Pacific and the world. This is a growing market within the dive industry and now is the time to get in on the action by becoming a part of the Asian Diver and Scuba Diver Chinese e-‐magazine. The e-‐magazine is a compilation of the most comprehensive content from each issue of Scuba Diver and Asian Diver, and includes an exclusive section for ADEX with the most up-‐to-‐date information on the expo. Every issue, the Scuba Diver section also includes one extra article from an Asia-‐based contributor, showcasing Asia’s abundant talent. It was a huge success with 60% of ADEX China visitors using this newly launched app during the event, we are aiming for 100% visitors’ usage of the app next year. This event featured world-‐renowned members of the underwater photography community providing invaluable insights on what they look for in a winning picture. Judges include Aaron Wong, Yorko Summer, William Tan, Wu Li Xin, Laurent Ballesta and Richard Meng. Many ended up having to place their orders after not being able to get their hands on the books. Gombessa: A Meeting with the Coelacanth by Laurent Ballesta tells all about the exciting journey he and his team took more than 120 metres underwater in Sodwana Bay to meet the fish thought to have been extinct for 65 million years. SPEAKERS FREE DIVE DADA LI (China) Dada claims to be an "Avid free diver", she is not only a well-known mermaid and underwater model, but is also AIDA International Free Diving Instructor and Judge. In order to enjoy travel in the sea, Dada had to put in tremendous amount of efforts to learn free diving. Diving under the tutelage of the German national team Richard Wonka and Belgium five-time world record holder Jean-Pol Francois, she obtained AIDA International Free Diving Instructor and Judge qualifications in May and June this year. How to be an Underwater Model VINCE PAN (Taiwan) Pan Ying Ji, also known as Vince, resides in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, which is holds one of the longest history for the diving industry. Back then in 1999, Vince was the president of NAUI instructor course, together with his partner Alken, introduced SSI Diving Organization and founded SSI Taiwan. Free Diving - Self Transcendence Soul MARINE CONSERVATION CLEMENT LEE (Malaysia) President HDS Asia Industry Pioneer, Icon and distinguished PADI Course Director, Clement Lee has been appointed as a Tourism Advisor of Malaysia to represent and help promote the diving industry in Malaysia. Clement became a PADI Instructor in 1985 and in 1991 was one of the first of two Malaysians to become a PADI Course Director. He then set up the Borneo Divers Training Institute to begin PADI Professional certifications. Topic: Simply Sipadan - Before and After 22 For Circulation SHARON KWOK (Hong Kong) ADEX Ocean Ambassador 2015-16 Born in Hong Kong of a Chinese mother and an American father of German decent who was one of the founding members of Ocean Park, Sharon began a lifelong love of animals during her youth when she was able to interact with numerous marine animals. Sharon then spent many years in San Francisco where she was a student at The Academy of Arts. She also taught at The Asian Arts Institute of San Francisco and even then, she has sold her works to raise funds for charitable causes. Her career as an actress began with beauty pageants with the strong support of her mother. Topic: Blue Hong Kong ZHANG XIONG (China) Xiong Zhang, born in China, is a doctoral candidate, majoring in Zoology in Project Seahorse, the University of British Columbia. His research interest is to identify areas of high priority for rare and threatened marine fishes. Topic: iSeahorse TEKDIVE GEORGE ANG DY PAY (Philippines) George Ang Dy Pay is a TDI Instructor Trainer, Asia's most experienced Advance wreck Instructor Trainer, and also Philippines Navy diving consultant. As the head instructor trainer, he personally trained Philippines Navy divers only great depth salvage and rescue unit team. Having the dive shop business in Subic for nearly a decade, his students come from all over the world, having over three hundred students in Shanghai alone. Topics: 1. Safe Diving 2. Fun of Tech Diving along the way JIN HUI (China) Jin Hui is the co-founder of Unscuba Diving Club, he is also the sponsor and the in-charge of GUE China communications. Jin Hui officially started his diving career in 2006, accumulating more than 1,500 dive experiences to date. In 2009, Jin hui, introduced GUE Diving in China with Unscuba Diving Club’s partner Cui Wei and became the only 2 GUE Diving Coaches in China in 2013 and 2014, he is also responsible for GUE’s publicity and 23 For Circulation promotion in China. In the span of one and a half years, China has nearly 200 GUE certified divers. Topic: The Journey of GUE Sweden Shipwreck Discovery JOHN FANG (Taiwan) John Fang is a doctoral candidate, majoring in Leisure Industry Research and Business Administration. He is currently the regional manager of Taiwan for TDI / SDI / ERDI, and also skilled in SCR and CCR, advanced mixed-gas and a cave diving instructor. In Taiwan, he is the Government Public Safety Diving instructor, responsible for training firefighters in underwater rescue operations in Taiwan. Topics: 1. Ambient Pressure Diving 2. A diving course specially designed for the government sector - Public Diving Safety(psd) SIMON PRIDMORE (United Kingdom) Simon has been at the sharp end of the scuba diving industry for the last two decades and has been a speaker at all the Tekdive conferences we have held with the ADEX shows over the years. In the 1990s, he pioneered mixed-gas deep diving in Asia and ran IANTD operations in Micronesia through his dive centre on Guam, Professional Sports Divers. He then moved to the UK to operate the IANTD franchise there and also worked with cutting edge dive equipment manufacturers VR Technology. Topic: What Makes a Good Technical Diver? 24 For Circulation UNDERWATER PHOTO/VIDEO SPEAKERS AARON WONG (Singapore) Aaron Wong is one of the most published and recognised underwater photographers in Asia. With over a decade of field experience, Aaron’s images and his trademark lighting technique have won him international acclaim. He is also the official ADEX Ambassador of Photography. Topics: 1. Lights, Cameras, WATER.COLORS ALAN LO (Hongkong) A commercial photographer based in Hong Kong and a scuba diving aficionado, Alan Lo expresses his passion and curiosity to the underwater world through his multi-faceted approach to photography originated by his innovative and artistic interpretation of life, people and nature. Macro Behaviour CIPTO AJI GUNAWAN (Indonesia) Cipto, who began his career as professional diver and underwater photographer in 1993 had his first publication in 1996, and since then have had 30 more in various magazines including the Garuda Magazine, Reader’s Digest, and National Geographic Indonesia, most of them addressing the issue of marine conservation. He is the first Indonesian to have received the highest professional credential in the diving industry as a PADI course director in 1996 and since 2008 have served as the consultant for the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Topic: Diving in Indonesia 25 For Circulation EDWARD LAI (China) Edward is the Chairman of the Hong Kong Mould & Die Council. He had collaborations with Nokia, Trina, Gillette, Barun etc. After he established Nauticam, Edward personally experimented on the different brands and cameras with different functions in order to provide the most ergonomic and most powerful underwater image forming apparatus, Edward began diving in 1997, he was keen to appreciate the beauty of the ocean and is committed to the cause of marine conservation. Topic: Underwater Photography Optical Lens LAURENT BALLESTA (France) Born in 1974 in south of France, Laurent Ballesta is a marine biologist and research diver. He combines his passion for underwater photography with his skills at diving to extreme depths. With meticulous attention to every detail during his deep diving research expeditions and unique photographs from the depths of the ocean, Ballesta has gained recognition in international publications. Taking photos in Deep Dives and Low Lights conditions RAYMOND MAN (Hong Kong) Raymond Man is a famous ecological documentary filmmaker, producer and underwater photographer in Hong Kong. He also founded the Professional Underwater Photographers Association. In 2002, he clinched several titles at the Hong Kong Underwater Photo and Video Competition including merit, runner-up, the overall champion and the best photo video award. He is not only skilled in photography, but also has several accomplishments in Diving technology. He is a PADI Diving Course Director and Founder of the former Haitian Diving Training Center. Topic: Amazing Marine Life and Marine Covservation RICHARD MENG (China) Richard graduated from Beijing University, and have studied overseas in Japan, the United States, and worked in the world's leading advertising company for many years. He have been diving and taking underwater photography for more than 10 years, touring the world's oceans, and won numerous awards at international underwater photography competitions. Topic: Intelligent Ocean World 26 For Circulation WILLIAM TAN (Singapore) William Tan has been fascinated with the sea creatures since childhood. While studying at the Johns Hopkins University (USA), much of his spare time was spent gazing at the marine collection of the National Aquarium in Baltimore. William travels extensively throughout the Pacific region judging underwater photo competitions, and photographing marine life for tourism organisations, scientific research groups, dive magazines, camera manufacturers, and resorts. Extreme Underwater photography WU LI XIN (China) Asian Diver Field Editor for China, Wu Li Xin is a tek diver and professional underwater photographer who has many accolades under his name, such as the Silver award for macro photography at the 11th World Underwater Photography Championships. Besides being an avid underwater explorer, Wu is also a contract photographer with Chinese National Geography, as well as a member of the China Artistic Photography Academy. Topic: Prying into China's underwater world YORKO SUMMER (Taiwan) Yorko Summer is a Taiwanese certified dive instructor and travel journalist who has visited many countries and exotic islands.
