Get Going
Health Trainer Activity
Get Going is a brand new FREE programme in North
Lincolnshire for children and young people aged 7- 16yrs
above a healthy weight. It aims to motivate young people and
their families to lead a healthier lifestyle through individual
appointments and weekly group activity sessions, and so
reduce the risks of adult obesity, cardiovascular disease and
diabetes as the young people get older.
Health Trainers continue to engage with individuals and local
communities to support them in making healthy lifestyle
choices.
The programme will be run and delivered by the Get Going
team who will work with young people and their families over
10 weeks on a 1-to-1 basis with the focus on increased
physical activity, nutrition and positive behaviour change. In
addition each young person will also be issued a leisure card
where they can access activities in their own time such as
swimming, badminton and exercise classes through a joined
up approach with leisure providers to help ensure
sustainability; essential in developing lifelong healthy habits.
As well as their one to one work with clients two of the
Health Trainers have organised and run 8 very successful
cook and eat sessions with small groups of clients across
North Lincolnshire including; Barton-Upon-Humber,
Winterton, Hibaldstow, Epworth, Scunthorpe and Ashby
areas.
The sessions help individuals to develop; Basic cooking skills,
learn how to prepare healthy meals when often on a tight
budget or with limited resources, and help them to gain
confidence in their own abilities and improve their health.
Get Going is unique from other childhood obesity
intervention programmes in that:
• Every 10 week programme is personalised to each
individual young person or family
• Get Going is delivered local to every young person or
family involved
• Young people and families can start the programme as
soon as they are ready
• Young people are invited to holiday clubs outside of the
school term
If you would like to find out more about the Get Going
Programme, have any questions or would like to enquire
about how to refer a young person onto the programme,
please contact Alex Piercy on 07702 275246 or email
[email protected]
Feedback from the sessions has been excellent with
individuals really benefiting from the friendly, fun, but
structured sessions.
As the work has become so popular the service is looking to
set up new cook and eat sessions in new venues across
North Lincolnshire.

has arrived in North Lincolnshire
Scunthorpe is now home to the phenomena, which is Park
Run. Park Run is a charity that aims to introduce free, timed
5km runs that are open to everyone, regardless of age and
ability.
More than 200,000 people have taken part in a Park Run
since just 13 people turned out for the first one in Bushy Park,
Teddington, in 2004.
Park Runs have been set up in more than 160 different
locations - not just here in the UK, but as far away as Australia
and Afghanistan.
Park Run’s success is
down to the teams of local
volunteers who organise
the events.
Scunthorpe’s central park
is now hosting Park runs
every Saturday morning,
with the run starting at
9am. The starting point being the rear of the Pods. This
event take place in the pleasant parkland surrounding the
pods and is aimed at people of every ability to take part; from
those taking their first steps in running to Olympians; from
juniors to those with more experience; we welcome you all.
Park run started in February 2013 and has already seen over
300 runners registered and over 150 runners take part.
Cllr Carl Sherwood, cabinet member for Customer Services,
Sport and Leisure at North Lincolnshire Council, said:
“We all saw how an army of volunteers made the London
2012 Olympic Games such a memorable and inspirational
event for billions of people across the globe.”
This is your opportunity to bring some of that Olympic magic
to North Lincolnshire and help introduce weekly 5km runs in
your town or village to be enjoyed for years to come.”
“Running is one of the most inclusive sports on the planet
and it’s a great way to keep fit.”
All park runs are free but you must register in advance. Once
registered with park run, you can participate in any of our
events at any time without letting us know that you are
coming. If you want to be a park runner, you will need to
register once only.
If you would like further information or would be interested in
volunteering to help run these weekly events then please call
Michelle Spacey on 01724 297280 or 07717588192 or email

Exciting new project for North Lincolnshire’s
expectant mothers and young families
North Lincolnshire Council is developing a
Start4Life programme that will contribute towards
reducing obesity in North Lincolnshire through
physical activity. The programme is aimed at
childhood and maternal obesity in North
Lincolnshire as this is above the national average.
The programme will be aimed at:
• Prenatal groups/expectant mums
• Postnatal mums and their children up to two
years of age
• Families with children up to five years old,
providing them with active play sessions
North Lincolnshire Council has received over
£28,000 from NHS North Lincolnshire to set up
the programme. The council will be working in
partnership with Northern Lincolnshire and Goole
Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to provide the
programme. Start4Life will deliver advice, support
and practical sessions in physical activity and
healthy lifestyles.
It is planned that the programme will take place
across a range of locations to suit the needs of
the user, including leisure centres, children
centres, community centres and local parks.
North Lincolnshire Council are in the process
of advertising for the Start4Life Activator
who will be key to delivering this project.
Sportshall
Athletics Stars?
We are writing with details of a brand new athletics activity
beginning in North Lincolnshire. Following the success of
London 2012 we are keen to ensure that children who have
been enthused to try athletics are able to do so.
The new club will be a Sportshall Athletics Club known as
Sportshall Stars. Aimed at 8 – 12 year olds (Year 4 – 7) it will
run every Friday evening, beginning 12th October, at The
Pods, Ashby Road, Scunthorpe.
Whilst unlike a traditional athletics club being based at an
athletics track, Sportshall Athletics is still as much fun. It uses
bright and colourful equipment and provides safe, indoor and
enjoyable multi-skill activities. The club will be an excellent
introduction to the sport, led by experienced coaches who
will be assisted by some of our aspiring current athletes.
If your child would like to join the Sportshall Athletics Club,
please contact The Pods to reserve your place. This will cost
£25 for 10 sessions. There are 2 sessions available that will
run at 5 – 6pm, please ensure you give your preference on
which time you would like upon booking. Payment can be
made directly at The Pods or by ringing on 01724 291900, to
pay by credit/debit card.
We do envisage the club to be popular so we would
encourage you to call as soon as you can to ensure you
reserve a place.

Wanted
As an employer, investing in the
health and wellbeing of your
workforce is part of looking after the
people who are working hard for you. By
supporting and advocating a healthy lifestyle to
staff, you as an employer could invest in the health of
your team; ensuring they are valued and cared for thus
improving morale and creating a happier workforce.
Within North Lincolnshire we are now offering you the
opportunity to take up a corporate offer, which will help to
achieve the above outcomes. The first of these being a
corporate over 18 years Ladies Netball Session. This session
is specifically targeted at ladies who have either never played
netball or not played since leaving school and have settled
into a fairly sedentary lifestyle.
Regular weekly sessions will be played at the new leisure
facility The Pods, Ashby Road Scunthorpe, starting Thursday
19 January 2012, from 8:00pm until 9:00pm at a cost of £2.50
per head per session. All equipment will be provided; the
ladies just need to turn up in appropriate clothing and
footwear ready to play.

Sky Ride
North Lincolnshire
During the summer of 2012 Sky Ride Local bike rides took
place throughout North Lincolnshire
Sky Ride Local led bike rides are organised by British Cycling
in partnership with North Lincolnshire Council and supported
by Sky as part of their National Sky Ride campaign to get 1
million more people in the UK riding their bikes.
Sky Ride Local is all about helping a community to embrace
bike riding, to explore their local area and meet like-minded
people. There will be 10 Sky Rides delivered across North
Lincolnshire in the months of June and July.
They are free to attend and vary in levels, from beginners to
more experienced cyclists, so you can pick a level to suit your
skills and enjoyment. Whatever level you choose, you'll be
riding on safe routes, with your ride leaders. And if you
haven't dusted off your bike for a while, they'll happily check it
over for you. All the information about the rides and how to
book on will be coming on www.goskyride.com
This is an exciting time for cycling in North Lincolnshire, dust
down your bike and make sure you’re part of the journey.

Ladies Breeze
Cycle Networks
A number of ladies only cycling groups are currently being
established across North Lincolnshire. The emphasis is on the
novice cyclist, and is very much geared around a friendly
informal network of women, all of whom have a passion or
desire to get out on their bikes, however anyone is welcome.
The Ulceby Breeze Cycle group meets up at Ulceby Village
Hall every Friday evening, during the lighter summer months,
leaving the village Hall at 6:30pm. The rides can take in a
number of historic sights such as the impressive Gates and
arches to the Brocklesby Estate, Thornton Abbey as well as
the idyllic site of Wootton Village Pond. Rides will vary in
distance depending on the riders ability and loop backs can
be made so that most riders can be easily accommodated in
terms of the distance they want to travel.
Street Sport is about getting young people who hang
out with ‘nothing to do’ involved in sport. A mobile
team of sports leaders will provide street sport on
evenings and weekends directly into local
communities.
Street Sport aims to get more young people
participating in sport, having fun, learning new skills
and getting active. Reducing youth crime and antisocial behaviour.
All sessions are FREE and for ages 8 – 18yrs unless
stated otherwise. All participants will need to
complete a parental consent form before taking part.

Study Parks
Here at Study Parks our objectives for our taught food course
have always centred on healthy eating, healthy living and
healthy lifestyle. However, after a while even we begin to find
ideas becoming run-of-the-mill and a little staid! An objective
look at what we do, is occasionally needed, to ensure we are
being fresh, innovative and forward-thinking. So our tutors
attended a day of ‘Lets Get Cooking’ at Heslam Park
(Scunthorpe) with professional trainers - Lisette Baker and Sue
Blackburn, in order to brush up on a few skills, old and new.
engage less able children by utilising
innovative kitchen gadgets. In addition
our tutors were supported to develop
greater cultural awareness and
understanding about family budget
constraints. This is exactly what we
needed for our 14 – 16 year groups and our Family Learning
sessions. After a day of sharing good practice, we were left
invigorated and brimming with fresh enthusiasm.
Whilst our cooking facilities at the Heslam Park Study Centre
are great, we wanted to maximise the skills of our tutors and
the space/equipment available. The refresher course
provided new healthy and tasty recipes and exciting ways to

School Lunches
“School lunches have come such a long way since I was at school", this is one of the many
great comments that came back from our recent Family Lunch Day at St Peter St Paul CE
Primary School. Over 70 adults stayed for a healthy and tasty school lunch with their Child
or Grandchild, which considering there are 90 children on roll was a great result for the
School and the Councils Catering Service.
Mrs McGuire Head Teacher said the many of the visitors commented on the quality of the
service, the atmosphere in the dining room and the great meal provided and said the
experience compared very favourably to their memories of school lunches. The day was a
great success and something that St Peter St Paul will be holding again in the near future.

“Community Public Health Improvement
Grant Scheme has been a huge success”
The community public health improvement grant scheme went
live in November 2012 and has been a great success. The
funding was available to non-for profit organisations working
with people aged 40+ with the focus to reduce health
inequalities. The funding was accessible to organisations across
North Lincolnshire with up to £2,000 available for each group.
The funding scheme had ended in March 2013 after all the
funds were successfully allocated.
Successful bids have come from organisations across the
localities and have already begun to have a positive impact on
the health. These include reducing obesity through physical
activity, increasing healthy eating, and decreasing isolation and
improving mental health.
Some of the successful bids across North Lincolnshire included:
• Isle dances for health – Village dances to live folk music delivered across the Isle. A great way to exercise, socialise and have fun
• Crowle and Ealand Bowls – New mats for the club
• Isle Pilates – 10 free sessions delivered in Epworth helping older people to maintain their mobility and independence.
• The apple of the Isle juicing project – Apple juicing project to enable people to make healthier food choices.
• Epworth Pavilion equipment – Audio equipment for exercise classes and events at the pavilion.
• Haxey Happy Circle club – Funding given to give member the opportunity to go on day trips and keep the group going.
This is the only chance some Haxey residents get to leave the house and socialise so it is money well spent.
• Crowle and Ealand blind and partially sighted club – Funding used for a walking trip to Cleethorpes. Increasing physical activity
and social experiences for the members.
• A Friend In Sight- Befriending Project- equipping befrienders with relevant training to help visually impaired and blind people
are involved in social activities and increase participation in activities.
• The Knotted Note Charity- Health Living Days focussing on substance misuse, exercise, sexual health and healthy eating.
• Grasp the Nettle- Soupadelic project which will address issues of obesity and poor diet/healthy eating by create a soup club
• Scunthorpe steelers-Wheels in Motion- Sports wheelchairs for individuals with disability to participate in sporting activities
including basketball sports.
• Frodingham Community Centre: Equipment in supporting set up of Zumba sessions
• Folk Dance taster sessions were delivered across North Lincolnshire. Sessions were focussed on improving the
health & well-being of people who don’t usually attend dance exercise classes.
Comments received from one of the taster session at:
Kimberley School Of Dance, South Leys
“Very enjoyable & excellent exercise. Good way of
building up stamina & fitness, Brilliant. Feel much better
