ADIRONDACK YARNS: Bill Smith accompanied by fiddler Don Woodcock in medley of lyrical lore SACKETS HARBOR — The Concerts on the Waterfront series continues July 4 with Adirondack raconteur and musician Bill Smith and Don Woodcock, master fiddler. Mr. Smith hails from near Colton. Gathered around the old round oak stove, his extended family and an endless stream of visiting characters wove tall tales, most about how a city slicker (or anyone official, like a game warden) is dazzled and sometimes hoodwinked by the wise and crafty rural hero. Characters include Lanty Martin and his blue tick hounds, Uncle John and Aunt Lillian, Ira Irish and the Reverend Waterson. Bill, the youngest of 10 children, was born in the Adirondack foothills to Emily Bicknell and Roy Smith, a woodsman who delivered provisions to lumber camps more than 70 years ago. Emily boarded the loggers as they traveled from camp to camp, so there was a steady supply of north country originals. Once he learned to play the guitar, Bill began hanging out Adirondack raconteur and musician Bill Smith, right, and master fiddler Don Woodcock are featured Sunday in Sackets Harbor’s Concerts on the Waterfront series. with the fiddlers at Cook’s Corners and learned hundreds of the old tunes and ballads. He has spent his life in the Adirondacks, as a hunter, trapper, logger, fisherman, basket maker and guide. Mr. Smith has become well known throughout the Northeast having performed in hundreds of schools, town halls, church meeting rooms, and banquet halls, as well as sites such as the National Folk Festival in Lowell, Mass. and the Augusta Heritage Center in West Virginia. He has appeared in dozens of publications, including National Geographic and Dirty Linen, and has recorded a half-dozen albums of songs and stories. Mr. Woodcock holds the title of Grand Champion Fiddler of New York State, having won the state championship contest three times: in 1977, 1979 and 1982. The Concerts on the Waterfront is a free program of the Sackets Harbor Historical Society. All concerts are held from 3 to 5 on Sunday afternoons at the Battlefield State Park in the village. The rain site is the United Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Broad St. The concert July 11 features Soft Spoken, a seven-piece rhythm and blues group from Syracuse. Reggie Siegler, bass player and founder, records numerous commercials and voiceovers for radio and TV in his Bishop Marguerite studio. With the SSB he has played nearly every venue available to a regional act. He majored in voice at Alabama State University and currently plays bass and is elder statesman for the SUNY Cortland Gospel Choir. His wife, Donna Alford, brought up in church choirs, has recorded numerous jingles and commercials in addition to nearly 17 years of performing with Soft Spoken. She is also responsible for the vocal harmonies for which the SSB is noted. She has been nominated for a Syracuse Area Music Award (SAMMY) three times. She also sings for ceremonies and events, and with her husband has traveled the Caribbean, performing on cruise ships. The association, the largest chapter of the New York State Old Tyme Fiddlers’ Association, has three members — Fred Bingle, Jim DuPre and Jesse Hastings — who were inducted into the state Fiddlers’ Hall of Fame. It is also the busiest chapter. From 1 to 5 p.m. every Sunday, members volunteer their time to put on round and square dances at venues such as fire halls, civic halls and fairs in the Watertown area. Last year the group raised more than $20,000 to benefit various organizations including its parent group, the state Old Tyme Fiddlers’ Association. The next free fiddle concert, from 2 to 5 p.m. July 18, will feature Floyd Sherman of Potsdam, playing old-time fiddle music. The Hall of Fame and Museum is open during weekend performances and events. Handicapped-accessible facilities include a covered, enclosable performance and seating area and with a patio and umbrella tables. Refreshments are available from a food vendor. The concerts are funded in part by the New York Council on the Arts, a state agency. For more information and a schedule of activities, visit www.brvfa.com or call 4088061 or 408-8062. Orchestra personnel have performed with the Montreal Symphony, the Syracuse Symphony, the National Arts Center Orchestra and many other orchestras around the world. Under the direction of maestro Kenneth Andrews, this concert will celebrate Independence Day and highlight music from the Broadway Stage. The orchestra invited fans this year to vote on the music that will be played from a selection of shows including “Oklahoma,” “West Side Story,” “Carousel,” “My Fair Lady” and “The King and I.” This concert will also feature Americana selections such as “Armed Forces Salute,” “America the Beautiful” and “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” Other events at the opera house soon include Relay for Life’s presentation of comedian Dave Reilly on July 10, and the next installment of TIPAF’s “Sunday Series” featuring the River Rat Rhythm Project, at 4 p.m. July 11.
