elcome to the 56th annual Show and Celebration.
Enjoy all the festivities that this annual week brings. Volunteers and office staff have
been working for a year to make this week memorable. Check the daily schedule so
that you don’t miss any of the events. There is always something for everyone: trail
rides, versatility events, shopping, horse sales, clinics, food, and the crowning of the
World Grand Champions on Saturday night. This is also the time to visit with many old friends
and make many new friends. Encourage a new member to participate and answer his/her questions. Thank you to our promotional committee and membership committee for once again putting
together an outstanding show program. Please compete with camaraderie and sportsmanship and
let the officers and board of directors know what they can do to make your stay a pleasant one. Let’s
celebrate the greatest horse in the world, the Missouri Fox Trotter and most of all, “HAVE FUN”.
Dr. Joyce Graening
MFTHBA President
History of the Show and Celebration
In 1948, fourteen men secured a charter and started a stud book in the hopes of preserving
the breeding of Missouri Fox Trotters. Between the time that the registry was started and 1955, a lot
of progress was made in registering horses; however, in 1955 the Secretary’s home burned and all of
the records were lost. Following the fire there was a period of much confusion when finally a bigger
group with larger capital reorganized in 1958. After this reorganization, more stock was sold and
the breed began spreading to other states. From this point forward, each year there was an increasing number of colts being registered.
In 1959, the first Missouri Fox Trotting Horse Jubilee Celebration was held in Ava, Missouri,
which is now the International Headquarters for the Missouri Fox Trotting Horse Breed Association. The first Celebration had fourteen classes and since then a Celebration has been held each
September in Ava.
In 1973, the Association moved from a stock company to a membership corporation and
with this changeover the MFTHBA saw the interest in the breed grow. To better accommodate the
large crowds at the Ava fairgrounds due to the increased popularity, the Association purchased land
just outside of Ava in 1976 and established the show grounds that we have today. Two fifty stall
barns were built and camper hookups and lighting facilities were installed as well. The following
year, an additional three barns were constructed.
In the spring of 1978, the first Annual Spring Show as held by the Association. The first
Spring Show was not too big because of other conflicting horse activities, but it was proof that the
breed and Association had grown in interest. Due to the increasing popularity, a sixth barn was
built that year and another barn was constructed the following year. In 1981, the Association and its
members saw a dream come to fruition with the construction of the office building and the Hall of
Fame room right on the show grounds.
Currently, on the MFTHBA 130 acre show grounds, there are seventeen barns with fifty
stalls each. There is a main show arena, a versatility arena and two warm-up arenas. There are 334
full service RV sites and a restaurant.

Show Basics
Model
During model classes horses are shown
in hand.
Horses are judged on how
closely they match the breed standard for
conformation. In addition, judges evaluate
the horse on gait at the flat foot walk.
Performance
In the performance ring, Fox Trotters are
judged against the breed standard for gaits.
Horses compete in either two gait (flat walk
and fox trot) or three gait (flat walk, fox
trot and canter) classes. Horses three and
under are only eligible to show in two-gait
classes. Horses competing in the Amateur
division do not canter until age five.
Fox Trotters in the performance ring typically
exhibit with a standard bridle including a
brow band and cavesson. Saddles should
be western. Horses also wear ribbon in
their forelock and mane. The ribbons help
illustrate the rhythm of the horse. There
are exceptions to the tack described above
depending on the requirements of the
specific class
Versatility
The versatility arena covers a variety of
competition classes. These classes may
include western pleasure, horsemanship,
English, reining, barrel racing, pole bending,
and ranch horse competitions.
These
classes follow similar guidelines as other
breed competition for these events with
one exception. In most classes, horses are
asked and expected to perform a fox trot.
Performance and
Model Scoring System
In model and performance classes,
MFTHBA utilizes the High-Low Olympic
Judging System for scoring classes.
Judges positions rotate with the judge in
the southwest corner of the ring serving
as the Call Judge. This judge determines
when horses will change gaits during the
performance classes.
Once placings have been assigned by each
judge, the highest and lowest placing for
each entry is eliminated. The remaining
placings for each exhibitor will be assigned
points. The entry with the most points wins.
In the case of a tie, the Call Judge’s card
breaks the tie.

hedgpeTh saddlery:
Technology TransForMing TradiTion
By Josephine Cozean Styron
You’ve heard the saying “Give the People What They Want.” Well, that’s just what Hedgpeth Saddlery has
been doing for over 20 years. Under Don Goyette, the renowned saddle company has kept its high standards
while incorporating technology that has made its saddles and tack even better, as well as easier on the
pocketbook.
Their hisTory
Hedgpeth Saddlery has a long history with Missouri Fox Trotters, going back to the 1980s and Clarence
Anderson, who owned Mary’s Saddle Shop in Willow Springs, Missouri, where he designed his own saddles.
“The distinguishing feature of Clarence’s saddles is that they were comfortable. The seat was ergonomically
designed to place your weight comfortably for you and the horse, and the fenders were cut to prevent strain
on the knees,” said Goyette.
Those features, along with the saddle tree configuration determined by Clarence, are still used by Goyette
today. “Clarence only had a fourth-grade education, but he knew his stuff,” said Goyette.
Don Goyette likes personalizing his work for his In 2003, David Hedgpeth bought Mary’s Saddle Shop, renamed it Hedgpeth Saddlery, and moved it to
customers, like this flank bag, reachable from the
Rogersville, Missouri. Hedgpeth kept the same designs and established name recognition for his saddles at
saddle. Jody Styron photo
Fox Trotter shows.
Meanwhile in Connecticut, Don Goyette got educated in electrical engineering, owned a computer shop, then moved to Missouri. Goyette started
riding Quarter Horses but wisely switched to Missouri Fox Trotters. “I went to Hedgpeth Saddles to buy a saddle because I had heard through a friend
that they were comfortable,” he said. Of course, you know the story: go in to buy a saddle and leave owning the company. Well, not quite that fast, but
after training with Hedgpeth, Goyette bought the saddlery in 2009 and moved it to Bolivar, Missouri.
Making The saddles
Goyette has supplemented the excellent design of Hedgpeth saddles with his own skills in engineering and computer technology. “I follow
the same design that Clarence used, but I do things a little differently,” said Goyette. “Most of my skill comes from engineering. I use state of the art
computer software, then cut it out with a CNC cutting machine. Cutting by hand, you can’t get it that precise. Using the cutting machine also cuts down
on labor costs, so it’s less expensive for the customer. Custom-made saddles are more of a challenge because they involve programming the design and
the computer work,” he said.
Everything is then assembled by hand in the Bolivar shop, using American products: leather from Pennsylvania and saddle trees from Tennessee.
Goyette uses only English bridle leather in his saddles and tack, another Clarence idea. “It’s lighter weight but twice as strong,” Goyette said.
While making saddles and tack is enjoyable for Goyette, his greatest satisfaction comes from the positive feedback he gets from his customers.
He likes knowing the person for whom he is building the saddle. “That way I can put personal things on that I know they would like,” he said.
Goyette rarely gets negative feedback; when he does he might use it to make changes. One change is making saddles that weigh less. “I
support my customers, because if you buy one of our saddles, you pretty much have this saddle the rest of your life,” he said.
The MFThBa and hedgpeTh saddlery parTnership
Because of their long history of working with and designing saddles that
have worked for the Missouri Fox Trotting Horse, Hedgpeth Saddlery became the
Official Trail Saddle of the MFTHBA in 2013. “This designation made sense for the
MFTHBA,” said Dr. Joyce Graening, MFTHBA president. “Hedgpeth Saddlery has a
long history of providing quality trail saddles.” The partnership between Hedgpeth
Saddlery and the MFTHBA runs through 2017. “We value being partnered with
Hedgpeth Saddlery and hope our relationship will extend well beyond that time
frame,” said Graening.
Through this partnership Hedgpeth Saddlery and the MFTHBA will be
providing a Hedgpeth saddle to the winner of the Amateur Versatility World Grand
Championship and the Amateur Owned 5-Years-and-Older World Grand Champion.
In addition, an attendee at the Show and Celebration may register to win a saddle,
with the winner being announced on Saturday night of the show. One participant in
the MFTHBA Fox Trot America program will also win a Hedgpeth saddle.
Don Goyetee believes his company is different from other saddleries
because of its guarantee, technology, and quality. Go to www.hedgpetheasyride.

What is a MFTHBYA Delegate?
Most MFTHBA Affiliates will offer a Delegate Program for their youth members. MFTHBYA Delegates are selected and sponsored by an Affiliate or can be
individually or privately sponsored. All MFTHBYA Delegate Programs are a source of leadership development. The best and brightest youth are selected to
represent their area. These are members who have excelled in their own equine abilities, have served in their communities in other ways, and have been
deemed worthy to represent their fellow youth. The MFTHBA Delegate rank recognizes members’ leadership abilities, but it is also a working honor. Specific
responsibilities and pre-requisites may vary somewhat depending on the Affiliate or individual sponsorship. Divisions are:
· Teen Delegate must be 15-17 years of age as of January 1.
· Junior-Teen Delegate must be 12-14 years of age as of January 1.

2013 year old futurity reserve champion
Skittles
“I will say that the first tube we used on our 3
year old stud colt because he was just worn
out from being ridden so much to get prepared for his Stallions & Geldings class. He
loved the taste...in fact so much so when I
went back the 2nd & 3rd time he wanted
to eat the whole tube. Now the true test for
me was how he responded back with his get
up and go. He was perky again after about
an hour after being given the tube. It never
caused any highly excitability in him for his next practice Thursday morning and after his class
Thursday night we gave him another tube with the same results. He place reserve in the 3 Year
Old Stallions and Geldings class! His last performance was Saturday night and he was ready! He
placed Reserve Overall in the 3 Year Old Futurity and we are extremely happy!” - Jennifer Stewart
