The real pine tree was hung with lights, bells and numerous bangles. Snow men and dolls guarded the entrance and looked over the guests. The table center pieces were living baby pine trees and poinsettias. Prior to dinner there we enjoyed much camaraderie and a lot of catching up on the past year. Our special guests were Laura Simonds, the MBCA National Treasurer, and husband Richard, the MBCA Past National President. Everyone enjoyed talking to Laura and Richard as many of our members were acquainted with Richard and Laura from past events. It is always a pleasure to have guests and it is especially nice to have members of our National Board join us in our events. Our guests of honor: Laura & Richard Simonds We dined on prime rib of beef and salmon with all the trimmings, and the chef’s signature Chocolate Mousse desert. Section President Jonathan White recounted our past year’s events hitting the highlights of each one. He recounted his odyssey of shepherding a very used Mercedes-Benz Estate Wagon from Long Island, New York to sunny San Diego. The car had not been driven for quite sometime, so it required a bit of maintenance prior to setting out on the journey. Bud and Kristine Hartwell Mary and Cecil Ross, Major, US Army Steve Seiver and Carol Osselear Nune and Tom Richards, our Charity Chairs Chuck and Elaine Davis Floyd, Pam, and Evie Burgess The table center pieces were awarded to two lucky people at each table. We are looking forward to seeing you at our events this new year and for sure at this year’s Christmas/Holiday Gala end-of-year Party. Hazel and Gary Jarvis Page 6 January 2012 STAR BU LLE TIN SAN D IEGO SEC TION NE WSLETTER Effective January 1, 2012 MBCA membership dues will increase as follows: 1 Year 2 Years 3 Years U.S. Membership Dues Was $45 Will Be $49 Was $87 Will Be $95 Was $127 Will Be $139 Canadian & Int’l Membership Dues Was $55 Will Be $59 Was $107 Will Be $115 Was $157 Will Be $169 5 Reasons for the 2012 Dues Increase 1. It has been 12 years since MBCA last raised its dues 2. 2012 dues represent an increase of less than 9% over 2011 3. MBCA has been able to avoid a dues increase for more than a decade but increasing operating expenses makes it virtually impossible to avoid a modest increase today 4. The list of MBCA member benefits and discounts has markedly expanded in the last two years. Please see the 2/3 page advertorial in the January/February issue of The Star ® magazine for details or visit www.mbca.org/member-benefits for a complete list of benefits 5. We want to ensure that MBCA can continue to meet its promise/value proposition: To be an enduring and sustainable Mercedes-Benz enthusiast organization known for nurturing and inspiring the Mercedes-Benz experience Special Incentives for MBCA Members, Effective NOW! Members who RENEW their membership beginning 1/1/12 or AFTER will receive: 3 additional months of membership FREE when they renew for 3 years (at the 2012 rate) 2 additional months of membership FREE when they renew for 2 years (at the 2012 rate) Regional Director’s Report Steve Ross Greetings and Happy New Year to all of my fellow MBCA Star people. We have completed another fantastic year of fun with our Star Cars. Every Section now has a website, good newsletters and many exciting and interesting activities. I again congratulate the Long Beach-South Bay Section for winning the 2010 Section of the Year award. Wouldn’t it be fantastic for one of our Sections to win the award for 2011! If you need help contact the Long Beach-South Bay Section for assistance. I am here to help also. The highlight event of our region was the Regional Event in Borrego Springs Resort and Spa. It was decided by the Sections that we would not have a Regional Event this year in order that we could support the Desert Stars Section in their sponsoring of StarFest 2012. This is shaping up to be a most elegant, top-shelf StarFest with something for everyone to enjoy. Follow The STAR magazine and our local Section newsletters. I want all to know that I am extremely proud of our SW Region. I thank all for the hard work volunteered to make 2011 such a success. Our National Board meeting was held in Detroit, MI in early November. Actually, we were in Dearborn, MI. It was a busy meeting with some significant issues addressed and dealt with. The paramount issue was dealing with the 2012 budget. As most are aware the economy has not been kind to us and the MBCA was not exempted. The budget committee worked well into the evening hammering out a budget for the National Board to approve. Several budget line items were either cut drastically or eliminated. A significant item cut was the Spring National Board Meeting. It was apparent that in order to provide the support expected from the MBCA to its Sections, a dues increase was inevitable. After much debate an increase in annual dues of $4.00 was approved with no increase in Section rebates. In addition to the reason stated above other rationale for an increase were: we have not had a dues increase in twelve years and this increase is 8.0% as compared to the last increase of 30%. The benefits to us, the members, have increased over the past twelve years. We have been able to avoid a dues increase for a long time, but increasing operating costs over the past twelve years make it unavoidable now, IF we are to continue to provide the support to the Sections specified in the By-Laws and Procedures Manual. I voted yes to this dues increase. I am available to discuss any of the Board Meeting decisions with you. Thank you for your support. SAN D IEGO SEC TION NE WSLETTER STAR BU LLE TIN January 2012 San Diego Section’s 2011 Holiday Season Military Family by Tom and Nune Richards Thanks to all the MBCA members who donated to our Military Family: Sgt. Ryan Lopez (deployed on the USS PEARL HARBOR off Thailand), wife Mary, son Justin (6) and daughter Eileen (18). The gifts that Nune Richards bought were greatly needed and appreciated. Tom and Nune drove up to Camp Pendleton where we were greeted by about 60 families representing 3 battalions there. The Bells of Freedom required a gift basket with food items, $150 gift card from Target and a $25 card from Albertsons. We added educational DVDs and a "Thomas Train" for Justin. Justin has Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome… enlarged tongue; can't talk; tube-fed and other complications, but otherwise runs around just like a normal 6 year old. Eileen got a scarf, hat, mittens and bath soaps. It was quite an inspiring afternoon. Thank you San Diego Section! San Diego Section’s 2011 Member of the Year San Diego Section President Jonathan White awards Carol Ross the prestigious “Member of the Year Award” to our Section Treasurer, Carol Ross. Carol has served on the Board for the past three years and has been our Section Treasurer for the past two years. Congratulations Carol!!
