Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds' sixteenth studio album, Skeleton Tree, will be released
globally on vinyl, CD and across all digital platforms on 9th September 2016.
This follows the Bad Seeds’ most critically and commercially successful release of
recent times, Push the Sky Away (2013).
The LP comes in a rigid sleeve with thick black lined board and includes a download card.
Skeleton Tree began its journey in late 2014 at Retreat Studios, Brighton, with further
sessions at La Frette Studios, France in autumn 2015. The album was mixed at AIR Studios,
London in early 2016.
The first opportunity anyone will have to hear any of the songs from the album will be to
watch One More Time With Feeling, directed by Andrew Dominik (Chopper, The
Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Killing Them Softly). The film will
screen in more than 650 cinemas across the world on 8th September 2016, immediately
prior to the release of Skeleton Tree the following day.
Filmed in black-and-white and colour, in both 3D and 2D, the film is stark, fragile
and raw, and a true testament to an artist trying to find his way through the
darkness.

Gang of Four have always been exciting to watch live: edgy, unpredictable, appearing to
threaten to dissolve into chaos and yet never losing the tightness, funkiness and
angularity that is the hallmark of their sound. During a year spent touring the world,
Gang Of Four recorded two of the greatest of their shows.
Available as a CD+DVD set or as a 2xLP black & white splattered coloured vinyl package ,
this is Gang of Four's first live release since 1984.
The band filmed their sold-out show at New York’s Irving Plaza which will be available as a
DVD. They also recorded their penultimate show of 2015, at London’s Islington Assembly
Hall. This will be available as an audio CD and b&w splattered double coloured vinyl
album. The DVD will be packaged with the CD format.
The set list of each show brings together a catalogue spanning more than 35 years, from
Entertainment!’s 'Damaged Goods' to 'Where The Nightingale Sings' from their current
studio album, 'What Happens Next'. The only live Gang of Four record since 1984’s 'At the
Palace', 'Live...In The Moment' captures the taught, punchy energy of Gang of Four live
and at their very best.
Sandwiched between Joy Division’s landmark album 'Unknown Pleasures' and Led
Zepellin’s iconic IV, Gang of Four’s debut 'Entertainment!' sits at #8 on Pitchfork’s Top 100
of the 1970s. It is, says Pitchfork, “caustic and bursting with disgust for unethical
capitalism, opportunist politicians and consumer society, among other things, but it’s also
crafted with amazing pop sensibility -- and is, of course, remarkably danceable.”
Mojo simply named it a “record that changed the world”.
That same album was found on Kurt Cobain’s handwritten list of favourite albums.
Echoing the singular importance of the band’s impact on music, Rage Against the
Machine’s Tom Morello told Rolling Stone in July 2014 that “there’s no one more
influential on my guitar playing than Andy Gill.” Having been acknowledged as a massive
influence by hundreds of artists including Bloc Party, R.E.M., The Red Hot Chili Peppers,
Massive Attack, Nine Inch Nails, The Rapture, St. Vincent, Franz Ferdinand and LCD
Soundsystem, Gang of Four’s legacy is assured but isn’t yet fixed.

Following the ‘Introducing' EP earlier this year, Dan Whitehouse releases ‘That’s Where I
Belong’ his first full-length album for Reveal Records on September 2nd 2016.
The title track will be available as a download single from August 12th
A talented songwriter and storyteller, a modern day troubadour, Dan Whitehouse was
born in Wolverhampton and has spent a lifetime in Britain’s industrial heartland with a
brief detour along the hippie trail when his parents decided to board the magic bus to
Katmandu and San Francisco in the 1970s, and then to London as an eighteen year old, his
prodigious talent making him a sought after guitarist.

28th Sep - Bicycle Shop, Norwich

07th Oct - Red Road Cafe, Biggar
09th Oct - Green Note, London
13th Oct - The Old Stables, Swindon
14th Oct - The Folk House, Bristol
For Dan the songwriting is key - his observational lyrics and imagined stories are
soundtracked by an original take on modern folk /Americana - Black Country Soul if you
will. Political stories of displacement and refuge (Close Up) and lyrics dealing with anxiety
and mental health (CCC, Little Left Unsaid), sit beside more personal reflections and
universal themes of family and love, loss and compassion (Work).
Recorded at Reservoir Studios in London and Kyoti in Glasgow, the album was produced in
the main by Chris Clarke (The Rockingbirds) and Danny George Wilson (Danny & The
Champions of the World). It features the legendary pedal and lap steel player B.J.Cole and
folk/trance singer Jess Morgan.
Of his influences during the recording sessions, Dan says:
‘Around the time of recording specific tracks I was listening to a lot were ‘Precious Angel’
by Dylan, ‘Ry Cooder’s ‘How Can A Poor Man Stand Such Times And Live’, Hiss Golden
Messenger ‘Saturday Song’ and The Deelines ‘Colfax Avenue’, great songs.
The recordings were finished in March this year, Dan then headed out on tour with labelmates Eddi Reader and Kris Drever giving him a chance to showcase the new songs to
appreciative audiences. No stranger to playing live Dan has shared stages with a host of
inspiring artists including Mark Eitzel, Richard Thompson, Sun Kil Moon and Julian Cope.
Dan is back on the road again later this year as Special Guest on Boo Hewerdine’s UK tour.
Between recording and touring Dan works as a community musician using music and
songwriting in a therapeutic way with vulnerable groups of people such as those with
learning difficulties, acquired brain injury or disaffected young people in PRUs (pupil
referral units).

Cradle Of Filth - Classic Filth

PEACEVILLE
HARD ROCK/METAL
'Classic Filth' is a triple disc set combining the ‘Peaceville era’ trilogy of releases
from the UK’s premier extreme metallers.
One of the most infamous and notorious names in metal, Cradle Of Filth shock, excite,
disgust and inspire in equal measures across 30 tracks of darkness & debauchery.
First on the menu is the band’s ninth studio album from 2010, ‘Darkly, Darkly, Venus
Aversa’. Described at the time by Cradle's infamous frontman Dani Filth as “without doubt
the fastest and most brutal album we've created to date”, this is a relentless gothic horror
themed slay-ride of fervour and perversion. Yet amidst the orchestral melodrama and
lush, cinematic production, there sits stalwart a ravening beast of furious riffing, flesh
ripping vocals and monstrous, unstoppable percussion.
Originally released as a companion piece to ‘Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa’, the ‘Evermore
Darkly’ release features new tracks, reworkings and rarities, including the exclusive track
‘Thank Your Lucky Scars’, plus a special remix of album track ‘Forgive Me Father’, courtesy
of Rob C from Anthrax. Also featured are tempered demo versions of ‘Darkly, Darkly...’
songs, along with a choice cut from the band's orchestral project which eventually
manifested as 'Midnight in the Labyrinth', in the form of a haunting, classic reworking of
fan-favourite, ‘Summer Dying Fast’.
Closing the circle of this trilogy is the band’s 2012 opus ‘The Manticore and Other Horrors’.
This, Cradle of Filth’s tenth studio full-length, can be likened to a bestiary, a collection of
stories on Monsters; personal demons, Chimeras, literary fiends and world-enslaving
entities. The album itself possesses an altogether new atmosphere for the band,
incorporating a heavier, faster NWOBBM punk vibe that is both current and cruel, blended
with ornate orchestration and the quirky immediateness of 2000's acclaimed ‘Midian’
opus.
Grammy nominated Cradle Of Filth have been pioneers of extreme music since their debut
in 1994 and have continued to evolve with each of their subsequent releases. Unafraid of
ruffling a few feathers, the band have continually refused to bow to convention or to
conform to prevalent trends and fads. Yet despite this uncompromising stance the band
are still the most successful British heavy metal band since Iron Maiden, with legions of
fans around the globe.
CD 1: The Cult Of Venus Aversa / One Foul Step From The Abyss / The Nun With The Astral
Habit / Retreat Of The Sacred Heart / The Persecution Song / Deceiving Eyes / Lilith
Immaculate / The Spawn Of Love And War / Harlot On A Pedestal / Forgive Me Father (I
Have Sinned) / Beyond Eleventh Hour
CD 2: Transmission From Hell / Thank Your Lucky Scars / Forgive Me Father (I Have Sinned)
(Elder Version) / Lilith Immaculate (Extended Length) / The Persecution Song (Elder
Version) / Forgive Me Father (I'm In A Trance) / The Spawn Of Love And War (Elder

Following the release of the critically-acclaimed 'Fear of a Blank Planet' album and the

The mini-album (29 minutes of music) was written during the 'Fear Of A Blank Planet'
sessions, completed over the Summer of 2007, and is presented as a cohesive, selfcontained Porcupine Tree work in its own right.
The title track features Robert Fripp on lead guitar, and the album moves through the full
Porcupine Tree spectrum of atmospheric ambience, melodic hooks, and crushing riffs.
The band began as a solo studio project created by Steven Wilson in the late eighties. It’s a
multi grammy nominated act and one of the world's most revered live bands, selling out

ROCK
When the band Agitation Free came together in 1967 as a result of the merging of two Berlin
rock groups, one of the most interesting groups in a dawning independent German music scene
was created. With their improvisations between rock, jazz and new music, Agitation Free –
soon relegated to the not so flattering category of "Krautrock" – made musical forays into areas
that few of their fellow German musicians had ever penetrated.
At a time when most in Germany were still orienting themselves as closely as possible to AngloAmerican musical formats, Agitation Free found a completely new and very original form of
musical expression. Starting with their debut album Malesch, Agitation Free delivered a
fascinating sound, influenced not least by the manifold impressions from a Near East tour. The
band moved toward a form of meta-music, a weaving of exotic-sounding compositions. The
albums has been justly regarded as a milestone in the genre, especially abroad.
Looking back, it's evident that the Agitation Free was one of the most important bands of the
experimental circle known as the "Berlin School", and a career springboard for a whole slew of
musicians. At the same time, this policy of changing personnel also meant risking that the band
couldn't keep itself together over the long run.

ROCK
The release of ‘Act V’ marks the long-awaited continuation of the band’s album concept series
chronicling the story of a boy at the turn of the century, only referred to as ‘The Dear Hunter’,
and is the main project of multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and songwriter Case Crescenzo.
From the beginning, it was a high-concept project: Casey mapped out multi-page treatments for a
six album story arc about the birth, life, and abrupt death of a boy, set at the dawn of the 20th
century. Act I: The Lake south, The River North, Act II: The Meaning of, and All Things Regarding
Ms. Leading, Act III: Life and Death and the fourth installment Act IV: Rebirth in Reprise were
released between 2006 and 2015.
Crescenzo temporarily stepped away from the series to work on the critically acclaimed 2.5 hour,
9 EP, 36-track collection: The Colour Spectrum, his latest studio album Migrant, and his own
personal symphony Amour & Attrition. The Dear Hunter has now completed a new chapter of the
story after the highly anticipated Act IV: Rebirth in Reprise. Act V is produced entirely by
Crescenzo and written in the same time frame of its predecessor.
‘Act IV’ has over 4.5 million Spotify streams to date, with the record peaking at #6 in Billboard’s
Alternative Chart & #37 Billboard’s Top 200 Chart

One of the first and greatest "black metal" albums, and one of the records that helped launch
the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement, the 1980 self-titled debut from Angel Witch
still packs a wallop some 36 years later.
Real Gone Music is proud to present the first vinyl reissue of this classic metal album, in limited
edition (of 600 copies) sporting red-and-yellow "flame" marbled vinyl.
Unlike, say, Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin, songwriter Kevin Heybourne's lyrical imagery just
doesn't dabble in the occult, it lives (dies?) there, with abundant sword and sorcery themes and
tales (e.g. "Angel of Death") of damnation. Yet, as on the title track, the band is not above crafting
some catchy hooks, though the raw production ensures that those hooks have barbs.

Limited edition of 900!
The one and only LP release from X-Ray Spex and its irrepressible frontwoman Poly Styrene has
been deemed by everybody from Greil Marcus to Robert Christgau to Spin to Mojo as one of the
greatest punk albums ever made, yet, somehow, this is its first vinyl reissue (and you can tell
because prices for the used vinyl are insane)! And we've done it right; besides the colored vinyl,
we've reproduced the inner lyric sheet, where you can read Poly's brilliant observations about the
plastic, corporate nature of modern society. All of which she sings in a passionate yowl all her
own (with Lora Logic among others backing on saxophone); this is not only one of the most
penetratingly observant punk records, it's also one of the most passionate, and, surprisingly
enough, catchy.

John Renbourn & Wizz Jones - Joint Control £7.99

CD
RIVERBOAT
FOLK
'Joint Control' wonderfully captures these two great artists and consummate guitarists
performing together live and in the studio. The album is all the more poignant because it
represents the final recordings by John Renbourn (who achieved worldwide fame with
Pentangle), the final tracks made just days before his death on 26 March 2015.
At the time of John's death, 'Joint Control' was almost entirely finished. The pair had been
working together since the start of the year in a small studio near John's Hawick home.
Alongside the sheer artistry of their playing you can't but escape the warmth of the
camaraderie permeating these performances. Most of the songs are drawn from a repertoire
honed through their touring together since 2012. The only original composition is Wizz's
instrumental "Balham Moon". Also includes classic renditions of three Bert Jansch songs.
Many of the songs date back to that extraordinary period of the 1960s when Wizz and John
first met, reflecting the ideas and techniques that were shared by all the young British pickers
and the influences which neither Wizz nor John would have hesitated to acknowledge - Big Bill
Broonzy, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, Josh White and Davy Graham.
As much as 'Joint Control' is steeped in the celebrated history that its two participants shared,
these genuinely historic recordings also sound utterly fresh and contemporary. John and Wizz
had only rarely appeared on record together in the past. John produced (and played a little) on
Wizz's 1972 album 'Right Now', as well as on 2011's 'Lucky the Man' so we can be particularly
thankful that these recordings were made.
As Peter Paphides (whio writes the liner notes) concludes: "Joint Control is a fitting testament
to two musicians who never forgot the spirit of joy and exploration which made them pick up
their instruments in the first place; two fires of more than fifty years standing. We're very
fortunate that they managed to capture it in time."
The album is released to coincide with a special John Renbourn Tribute concert on 22nd
September at Cecil Sharp House, London.

John Calvin Abney doesn't stand still. He'd be the first to tell you that.
Abney originally made his name as a rowdy side man, playing guitar, pedal steel, keys
and drums for a number of other acts. Thanks to years of extensive touring, both solo
and as a gun-for-hire, Abney is possessed of some impressive instrumental stage
chops.
But lately, it's lyricism where he finds his inspiration, with encouragement from a host
of Oklahoma songwriters in close proximity. Few songwriters can weave so seamlessly
in and out of genre that listeners are left wondering if they indeed heard what they
thought they heard. And if they listen again, they're likely to hear something else.
Abney's songs can be both frenetic and meditative, deeply affectionate and mired in
loneliness, and, like Abney himself, both road-weary and ready for adventure.
John had the opportunity to work with some wonderful musicians from Tulsa and
Nashville, including Megan Palmer on harmony and fiddle, Paddy Ryan on drums,
Aaron Boehler on bass, and Cody Clinton on electric guitar. This record is the
culmination of John's writing during the post-phase of his previuos album, Better Luck
and his journeys that lead him across the states and sea, incorporating the last year of
experience into what became FC&CC.

Vocalist Alexander Stewart returns with an orchestral, cinematic album, that dusts off
the constraints of nostalgia, leaping forward into the contemporary and places the
twenty-something Mancunian back in the UK music spotlight.
Tour Dates 2016:
Labelled as “one of the most precociously talented vocalists of his generation”, Stewart's
acknowledgement of both standards and popular music is greatly referenced in his choice
of material, both in his live and recorded work and no more so than in this upcoming
release.
06th Sep - The Hippodrome Casino, London
The 12-track album includes new takes on timeless songs, ranging from Jackie Wilson (The

Sweetest Feeling) to Dusty Springfield (The Look Of Love), and from up-tempo
interpretation on Etta James (I Just Want To Make Love to you), to the opening track, a
sweeping orchestral mambo through a Stevie Wonder favorite (Part Time Lover).
Blending with these cornerstones in popular musical legacy, are four original compositions
by Stewart, (including a co-write with long time collaborator, Alex Webb) showcasing a
huge development of Alexander, as both artist and now songwriter.
Add to all this, a total reimagining of a Sinatra classic as the albums centerpiece (brought
forward to the 21st century with a bold, new, orchestral score), ‘I Thought About You’ is a
richly textured, contemporary record, with a modern, emotive approach to songs you
know and love, delivered with conviction by Stewart.

MEMBRAN
JAZZ
The outstanding and internationally renowned vocalist, guitarist and composer Allan Harris
sums up his personal perspective on music in clear and straightforward terms. "There is nothing
that I have found that defines and gives credence to my place in this wild and mysterious
universe than this thing called music."
The album is a bold statement that builds upon the entire breadth of Harris' already esteemed
reputation, demonstrating his enormous versatility within the full scope of his highly creative
musical vision. Swinging jazz, rich R&B, sumptuous balladry, wailing rock, rumbling blues and even
a touch of playful Brazilian are all woven seamlessly into the tapestry of a musical odyssey that is
all Allan Harris. With a deeply resonant baritone/tenor voice that is soulful, richly expressive and
flawless in both intonation and phrasing, Harris displays a total command and fluency in every
context.
Back from the previous album are the GRAMMY® Award-winning producer Brian Bacchus
(Gregory Porter, Norah Jones) and Harris' longtime keyboard cohort Pascal Le Boeuf (on acoustic
and electric pianos, and Hammond B3 organ), whose deep understanding and empathy for Harris'
music creates a marvelous sense of intimacy and shared joy of expression. The delightful
repertoire includes four Harris originals, a couple of American Songbook gems, a pair of jazz
classics, and re-imaginations of hit songs from Jimi Hendrix, Steely Dan and Spiral Staircase.
As he does with every lyric, Harris pays proper homage to those who have provided the
inspiration for his own highly personal sound, specifically here to Ray Charles, Nat 'King' Cole and
Eddie Jefferson on three individual items. The four Harris originals aptly demonstrate that he is as
skilled a composer as a vocalist - and his lyrics are moving, heartfelt and poetic. The album opener
"Mother's Love (Nobody's Gonna Love You)" begins on a poignant, emotive and dramatic note
before morphing into a vibrantly swinging excursion.
Appearing at London Jazz Festival for an entire week in 2016.

The Spirits of Rhythm were aptly named. High-spirited and volatile they were full of joy,
drive and pep; a fun group in the days when jazz could be good-time and thought worthwhile.
And they were more than that, being (as the first groovy tracks confirm) creative and fairly
adventurous.
Peter Tanner wrote up an interview with Teddy Bunn in the Melody Maker of 29th December
1973 in which the guitarist spoke-of his appreciation of some of the then-modern rock groups.
"It's just rhythm-and-blues as we used to call it. It ain't changed that much, not to me anyway. If
the Spirits of Rhythm was playing today that's what we'd be doing. We was ahead of our time and

Enjoying a career which includes key roles with prominent UK symphony orchestras
and big bands, plus recording/touring projects with Aretha Franklin, Quincy Jones,
Tom Jones and Randy Brecker (to name but a few), trumpeter and composer/arranger
Ryan Quigley now unveils his ten-track album What Doesn't Kill You – a quintet release
with Paul Booth (tenor sax, flutes), Steve Hamilton (piano, Fender Rhodes), Michael Janisch
(double bass) and Clarence Penn (drums).
Having worked for a number of years with Scottish band Brass Jaw, as well as releasing his own
album Laphroaig-ian Slip, Quigley's experience shines through in this new set of originals which
suggests the passion of early '60s hard-bop and early '70s fusion, yet is up to date in forwardthinking appeal. Here is music born out of strong compositional melody which, in turn, sparks
honest improvisational freedom. And while it features the leader's assured, incisive trumpet, the
sense of group coequality remains blissfully evident throughout this near hour long session.
The swinging 'Doctor Stage' couldn't be more infectious, Paul Booth's effervescent tenor
imaginings leaping off one of Quigley's memorable, Freddie Hubbard-style unison riffs ahead of
the trumpeter's own, soaring improvisations. Slowly shifting 'Fire Eyes' shimmers broadly to Steve
Hamilton's piano and Clarence Penn's soft-malleted percussion – a towering landscape of
romantic horn textures embellished by distant, stadium-fanfare trumpet.
This release - bookended by lyrical, echoic solo trumpet - finds Ryan Quigley delighting in the
opportunity of working with good friends who share his innate desire for musical integrity, and
whom he also counts amongst his musical heroes. "My hope is that this recording captures
something of that ambition, and that listeners can feel its warmth, depth of feeling… and
friendship" .

MACK AVENUE
JAZZ
"El Viaje" (The Journey), the title track of Cuban pianist and composer Harold López-Nussa's
debut release on Mack Avenue Records, seems to sway gently like a boat in the water - as if
readying for a voyage or returning to port after arrival - trumpet and voices whispering
memories.
This scene aptly describes López-Nussa's experiences of traveling throughout the world, yet
always finding his way back to his hometown of Havana, Cuba. This journey of body and spirit has
led simultaneously to a musical exploration where he visits various genres and ideas while staying
true to his foundational roots.
The release of López-Nussa's music stateside is a significant postscript to President Obama's trip
to Havana in March 2016. The conservatory-trained pianist is the first Cuba-based musician (he
has dual citizenship in both Cuba and France) to release an album internationally since the lifting
of many of the restrictions associated with the longstanding trade embargo. States Mack Avenue
Records President Denny Stilwell, "Harold follows in the modern day tradition of exemplary
Cuban pianists who have recorded and toured internationally. We feel he is an emerging artist
with immense creative potential to break through."
'El Viaje' features The Harold López-Nussa Trio with younger brother Ruy Adrián López-Nussa on
drums and percussion; and from Senegal, Alune Wade on bass and vocals. This trio is augmented
on certain tracks with guests including his father Ruy Francisco López-Nussa on drums, Mayquel
González on trumpet and flugelhorn, and Dreiser Durruthy and Adel González on percussion.

You wouldn't even know they were there… but the minute islands and atolls amidst the
vastness of our world's oceans provide intriguing inspiration for Monocled Man's second
album, 'We Drift Meridian' - a concept devised by trumpeter, multi-instrumentalist and
composer Rory Simmons.
With established colleagues Chris Montague (electric guitar) and Jon Scott (drums/electronics),
plus vocal contributions from Emilia Mårtensson and Ed Begley, Simmons layers-up haunting
electronic and acoustic soundscapes which reflect the remoteness and sometimes curious
histories and characters associated with these far-flung, isolated spaces.
Monocled Man's ethos of through-composition and open improvisation is carried over from their
debut release on Whirlwind, Southern Drawl – but here, a distinctive new dimension is
introduced, emanating from Simmons' predetermined, home-studio-produced sonic
environments. Cinematic beds of sound, carefully crafted with modular synths, sequencers and
chopped audio, are all fashioned into an expansive framework which provides a springboard for
individual artistry. Chris Montague's characteristically oblique guitar style and Jon Scott's hardhitting, sparky drumming – both of which are unwaveringly inventive – join with Simmons'
plaintive trumpet in generating these appropriately drifting, searching panoramas. But, far away
from ambient lifelessness, this is a creative band whose energy also frequently crackles with
filmic urgency as pulsating, electronic textures erupt into industrial, post-prog fervor.
Known widely for his contribution to the UK and international jazz scenes, Rory Simmons'
approach to Monocled Man expresses the broader palette of music which currently inspires him;
and We Drift Meridian embraces conceptual cohesiveness through textures and lyrics which
evoke mystery, solitude and even desperation. As Simmons confirms: "These are instrumental
and electronic explorations which have a meaning and, in context, hang together musically - it's
an exciting, natural progression of the band."

Described as "quietly mesmerising" (The Times) and "startlingly original" (The Observer), Philip
Clemo's unique, multi-layered soundworlds balance on a cusp where many different polarities
meet - the figurative and the abstract; the acoustic and the electronic; the traditional and the
avant-garde; the composed and the improvised.
'Dream Maps', Clemo's sixth album, is a series of journeys or maps where each piece explores a
different space. The shape of these spaces was developed through a process of composition and
extended improvisation over a period of three years with contributions from 21 musicians
including Arve Henriksen, Byron Wallen and Evi Vine.

INTUITION
JAZZ
Volume 7 of the prestigious series "European Jazz Legends", a cooperation between the
German record label Intuition, magazine Jazz Thing, radio station WDR 3 and the theatre of
Gütersloh. It sees the French saxophonist/clarinettist Michel Portal, alongside WDR Bigband
and the American pianist Richie Beirach.
Michel Portals extended improvisations with Beirach were recorded for this CD on March 5th
2016 during a concert in the Theater Gütersloh and mark the first time these musicians ever
played together. They are further proof of the universality of the musical language of jazz and the
fascinating and infectious vitality of improvisation. "I love to play in front of an audience", Portal
said. "It is like a metamorphosis. I feel bad, if I haven’t played live for two weeks.”
The multi-instrumentalist from Bayonne, who had turned eighty just a few days before the
interview, is a master of various clarinets and saxophones as well as the bandoneon, and is also
recognised as a skilled composer. His wit and wisdom, and the youthful energy and curiosity he
brings to his astonishing improvisations are only some of the reasons Portal has enjoyed such a
fruitful and enduring career. It has seen him perform with John Surman, Pierre Favre, Dave
Liebman, Martial Solal, Jack DeJohnette and many others.

UK pianist/composer/producer Dominic J. Marshall strikes gold again with his album ‘The

‘Icaros’, as well as his cassette only release ‘Cave Art’ (Paxico Records) have been critically
acclaimed and have led to him touring with the Cinematic Orchestra.
"You can hear, not only in his playing, but also in his composing, little bits of Duke Ellington and
Thelonious Monk, right up there to Keith Jarrett and Brad Mehldau. You can hear his classical
influences - the tricksy mathematical compositions of Bach for example. But he's also definitely
inspired by the rhythms and offbeat textures of hip-hop producers like J Dilla. He brings together
a great heritage of the past, but also something very fresh and new, all the within the confines of
a simple acoustic piano trio.” -Jamie Cullum

REAL GONE MUSIC
JAZZ
Real Gone Music is proud to present what is probably the rarest album in the voluminous Duke
Ellington discography, his 1963 date with Swedish singer Alice Babs, Serenade to Sweden. That
year, Ellington was hired by the Reprise label as an A&R man, free to sign any artist he wanted
and to record them. His first choice was Babs, who, in Ellington's words, was "the most unique
artist I know…She sings opera, she sings lieder, she sings what we call jazz and blues, she sings
like an instrument, she even yodels, and she can read any and all of it!"
The result of this meeting of legendary musical minds was a sublime cool jazz masterpiece that,
sadly, never received a proper release in the U.S. and appears to be the only Ellington album
never to be reissued on CD or even digitally, having eluded even the most comprehensive
compilers. Needless to say, original copies go for big Swedish krona online, and not just because
it's rare; Babs' wordless vocals and scat singing on "The Boy in My Dreams," "Strange Visitor," and
"Babsie" are positively Ella-worthy, and Ellington's masterful arrangements—at times filigreed
with a French horn section—provide the perfect accompaniment. We've added liner notes by
Scott Yanow, while the album boasts remastering by Aaron Kannowski. Fascinating for any jazz
fan—essential for Ellington enthusiasts!

Ronnie Earl’s Maxwell Street is named in honour of blues pianist and previous member
of the Broadcasters David Maxwell and is a nod to Chicago’s Maxwell Street where blues
musicians gathered to play outside for the Sunday market crowds.
It confirms Ronnie Earl’s status as one of the most soulful blues/soul/jazz guitarists
working today. Earl is a three-time Blues Award winner as Guitarist Of The Year working
with his band of over 25 years.
“This album is dedicated to my big brother David Maxwell. We were born on the same
day ten years apart. His playing was a deep as the ocean, as high as the sky and as bright
as a quasar. When he passed I felt a huge loss as I still do. David was a Broadcaster and he
and I made a few records together. It was always a supreme honor to play with him. He
played blues as well as jazz with incredible expression from Otis Spann to Cecil Taylor. He
knew and loved it all. He became Otis Spann in the later years. Our pianist David Limina
wrote a tune that captures the feeling of the album and we all send our love and respect
to David’s family and all of our love and gratitude for David Maxwell.”
"I feel the respect and affection for him that a father feels for his son. He is one of the
most serious blues guitarists you can find today. He makes me proud." - B. B. King

MIG MUSIC

Re-release of the Klaus Schulze classic “X” (originally released 1978).
Klaus Schulze about “X“
Richard Wagner could also have been part of these musical biographies on "X". Wagner is
particularly close to me because for me he was the first to create a synthesis of the arts.
For instance he demanded for a composition a separate theatre where the orchestra could
disappear in the pit. Therein I see an analogy to the synthesizer. Here the actual
instrument is also disappearing behind a few buttons – you're hearing very much but you
don't see much. But Wagner was a far too tremendous topic because then I would have
had to make "X" a triple album. For this reason I had chosen only authors – except
Friedemann Bach – who had influenced me very much.
Frank Herbert's novel Dune almost was a bible for me at that time! Bavarian king Ludwig II
was, of course, no author but his life is a novel itself. "X" also was film music – Barracuda –
I had the budget so I could afford an orchestra. However, it was really difficult to master
the orchestral score. I can actually write notes – I once took also classical guitar lessons –
but to write such a score is a different kind of thing. All that music I could have played
within a day but on the score I worked for four weeks long. Cellist Wolfgang Tiepold was a
big help since I wasn't that experienced just to say a violin can really play what I had
written in the score. In the middle section of "Ludwig II." We had to make a tape loop for
those repetitions. The loop reached out across the studio and the kitchen, and then we
looped it. Because the musicians dropped their violins when trying to play this passage live
for 15 minutes. The tape loop of course was – typical for my compositions! – 20 meters
long, haha.
The bonus track "Objet d'Louis" is a live verson of "Ludwig II." using a complete orchestra. I
did that in 1978 because I wanted to hear how this track sounds live on stage with an
orchestra. I was on tour and also performed "Ludwig", and in Belgium there was an
opportunity to perform the song in that style. A radio station wanted to broadcast the
concert live. So I asked if we can do that with an orchestra. Then Tiepold rehearsed it a
little bit with the orchestra, and in the evening we played it and it was broadcasted live.
Now you can hear it again on the CD.

CONTINENTAL SONG CITY
AMERICANA
An expatriate New Yorker now living in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Richard Shindell is a
meticulous craftsman of song whose studio albums and 2 live recordings have been revered by
critics and fans alike. Innovative, original and occasionally spiritual, Shindell's songs weave tales
that interchangeably champion the downtrodden, exalt the disaffected or wax empathetic to
those lost to society's fringes.
From his first record, Sparrow's Point (1992) to the most recent solo album Not Far Now (2009),
Shindell has demonstrated a penchant for songwriting at once passionate and profound. His
songs are often slowly and painstakingly crafted until honed to perfection. Conversely, he is also
capable of writing tunes that are simply clever and amusing.
Shindell's songwriting is truly eclectic, ranging from lighthearted ballads and adulterous love
songs, to dirges and diatribes that skillfully skewer politics, prejudice, war and religion. He has a
unique ability to morph into the soul of the many and varied personalities he casts as narrators in
certain songs--songs that are veritable novellas framed in haunting acoustic melodies, sometimes
including cryptic, revelations through the eyes of a woman.
Following a release with Lucy Kaplansky as the Pinehill Project, 2016 marks the release of a brand
new album: Careless which features all the good things we know from Richard with a stellar cast
of musicians including Jerry Marotta, Scott Petitito, David Spinozza, Larry Camplbell, Victor

wizard Russ Pahl (Ray Lamontagne, John Hiatt), and multi-instrumentalist Robbie Crowell
(Deertick, Turbo Fruits).

What the ears have here is a live band kicking it on the studio floor with Easton singing along,
playing mostly electric guitar this time, recorded at the spacious and moody Club Roar with
Patrick Damphier producing. The songwriter elaborated on his intentions: “I am a fan of the
change-up pitch. My aim is to prod a fork in the somewhat predictable Americana format.” Track
2, Killing Time, is an open letter to all armchair non-conformists to stand up and be counted, with
female backing vocals reminiscent of a Leonard Cohen production. Song 3 is Elmore James, a
swampy dedication to the bluesman who could shake a whole room with one groove. Americana
indeed, with no edge lines.
October/November Tour currently being booked
Tracks: Right Before Your Own Eyes / Killing Time / Elmore James / Gatekeeper / Burning Star /
Alaskan Bars, Part 1 / Now vs. Now / On My Way

Bluegrass Hall of Fame member Doyle Lawson is well known for high standards in every aspect
of his musical career. Burden Bearer is the latest example of the exquisite precision in vocals,
harmony and musicianship of Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver.
The album is reminiscent of a traditional “call to a camp meeting.” It is a special music event of
Bluegrass Gospel and A Capella music celebrating the musical legacy of faith, hope, struggle and
victory of the spirit. Old time renderings live alongside newly forged Gospel songs that pay tribute
to the aged, but timeless Gospel convention music tradition.
Lawson’s current lineup is stronger than ever with lead vocals handled by Dustin Pyrtle, Eli
Johnston and Lawson himself. The harmony work on Burden Bearer makes it clear why the group
has won multiple IBMA Vocal Group of the Year Awards.

REAL GONE MUSIC
No one, but no one, painted a picture in song of despair and desolation like the Thin Man
from the West Plains, Porter Wagoner. Forget the Nudie suit and the pompadour;
Waylon Jennings once said that Wagoner couldn't go pop with a mouthful of firecrackers,
and these 40 songs prove it.
Sure, the hits—27 of 'em in all and every Top Ten solo smash—are here, but what elevates this
collection above a mere best-of are the tracks lifted from Wagoner's starkly compelling concept
albums (complete with their amazing album art, some of which we've included here) like
Confessions of a Broken Man, Soul of a Convict and Other Great Prison Songs, and The Bottom of
the Bottle. Grammy-winning writer Colin Escott contributes notes to the package, which is newly
remastered by Vic Anesini at Battery Studios in New York. Country music never got harder than
this…this ain't cry-in-your-beer country, t's more like punch-in-the-gut poetry.

POP
During their original 1965-1970 run, the Turtles led a musical double life, scoring a lengthy run of
unforgettable pop hits — such as "Happy Together," "Elenore," "You Baby" and "She'd Rather Be
With Me" — while making albums that were among the era's most distinctive, inventive and gently
subversive.
With co-frontmen Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman providing heavenly harmonies, infectious sonic
craft and effervescent humour, the Turtles were a ubiquitous presence on Top 40 radio for much of the
'60s, while earning their counterculture credentials with such adventurous LPs as the Ray Daviesproduced Turtle Soup and the wildly eclectic The Turtles Present the Battle of the Bands, on which they
impersonated a different fictional act on each track.
This two-CD All the Singles collects the A and B sides of every original 1965-1970 Turtles 45, with the
tracks presented in the same mono or stereo mixes that were heard on the original singles. All the
Singles also features several tracks that were prepared for singles release but not issued at the time.
After the Turtles disbanded at the end of the decade, Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman maintained
their partnership, serving a five-album stint as members of Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention before
releasing several albums as Flo and Eddie.

POP
The Complete Original Albums Collection is a six-CD box set of the six albums that the Turtles
released between 1965 to 1970, plus a wealth of rare bonus material. Each of the band's first three
albums — It Ain't Me Babe, You Baby and Happy Together — is presented in its original mono and
stereo mixes, while each of the remaining three — The Turtles Present the Battle of the Bands, Turtle
Soup and Wooden Head — provide a generous assortment of rare bonus tracks, including some
previously unreleased material.
Both sets (this and a 2CD complilation) have been meticulously researched and prepared from the
original master tapes by renowned engineer Bill Inglot, and both contain detailed liner notes by noted
writer and archivist Andrew Sandoval. The resulting packages offer a unique insight into one of rock's
most misunderstood bands.
The Turtles, Mark Volman points out, were "making records that made it to the radio, but were still
challenging and adventurous records. Experimental, but at the same time full of commerciality. The
Turtles were really walking on a fine edge. We were only two years out of high school and we were
making some pretty challenging music."

REAL GONE MUSIC
In 1980, Ronald, Rudolph, O'Kelly, Ernie and Marvin Isley and Chris Jasper were riding high with
their electrifying fusion of rock, funk and soul. After having transformed in 1973 from a threeman vocal group to a self-contained six-man band, The Isleys cranked out hit after hit.
They decided to follow in the footsteps of The Commodores, Parliament, and Earth Wind & Fire
to record a live album. Rather than bring a mobile truck to a concert venue, however, The Isley
Brothers chose to cut Groove with You…Live! at Bearsville Sound Studio in Woodstock, New York.
The resulting recordings had all of the incendiary thrills of a live performance, but with pristine
studio fidelity. The band overdubbed an audience's frenzied reception and the energetic
introduction of MC "Gorgeous" George Odell to create an in-studio live album as captivating as
the real thing. It was presented to CBS for release on the band's T-Neck imprint, but the label
opted to wait for an original studio record. Groove with You…Live! was shelved.
Fast forward to 2015, and the Bearsville sessions were remixed, sans crowd ambiance, for
inclusion as one disc of a massive Isleys CD box set. Later that year, Groove with You…Live! was
restored and released in its originally-intended "live" version on limited edition vinyl. Now, this
sizzling, swooning and immersive double-album document of The Isleys at the peak of their
powers comes to CD for the very first time as The Isley Brothers originally intended it!
Featuring classic hits like "Take Me to the Next Phase," "Summer Breeze," and "Livin' n the Life,"
Groove with You…Live! has been remastered by Mark Wilder and Chris Le Monde.

This 40-track set presents the A and B-side of every single that organist Art Neville, guitarist Leo
Nocentelli, bassist George Porter, Jr., and drummer Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste cut for the
Josie, Reprise & Warner Bros. label, virtually their entire singles output save for a few odds 'n'
ends issued mostly overseas.
That means that you not only get every hit along with its hard-to-find B-side but also the rare
single mixes, including the especially rare original mono single mixes of the 1968-1971 Josie sides,
very few of which have appeared on CD (the first CD is all mono; the second, featuring the later
Reprise and Warner Bros. singles, presents all stereo single mixes). These songs represent the
mother lode of New Orleans funk, all but two tracks co-produced by the late, legendary Allen
Toussaint. And, with liner notes by Bill Dahl featuring quotes from Nocentelli, Neville, and Porter,
this 2-CD set offers probably the best retrospective to date of this enormously influential band.

REAL GONE MUSIC
SOUL/R&B
When Dionne Warwick signed to the Warner Bros. label in 1971 (bringing her legendary
songwriting and production team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David with her), success seemed
preordained for probably the greatest pop-soul singer of all time. However, like so many other
'60s superstars, Dionne fell prey to the changing tastes of the '70s marketplace and exited the
label five years later sans her production team or any major chart hits.
Subsequent anthologies have, understandably, focused on the Scepter label hits she recorded
with Bacharach and David during the '60s and the more contemporary smashes she recorded for
Arista during the in the late '70s and '80s, while roundly ignoring her Warner Bros. sides. Now,
with this 2-CD set containing Warwick's complete Warner Bros. singles and previously unreleased
tracks recorded for the label, Real Gone Music is at last shining a light on a body of work that,
despite its lack of commercial prowess, ranks as some of the finest this pop-soul diva's nonpareil
career has to offer. The rarities package, meanwhile, presents 19 tracks that never came out on
LP or as singles, and present Warwick working with such legendary producers as Ashford &
Simpson, Thom Bell, Jerry Ragavoy and Holland-Dozier-Holland.

Krishnanda is an album in the truest sense of the word – a spiritual, psychedelic Brazilian
masterpiece from start to finish – celebrated by everyone from Seu Jorge and Kassin to Floating
Points, Madlib and DJ Nuts. These days, originals change hands for thousands of dollars.
Lovingly re-issued with heavy sleeve and on heavy weight vinyl.
Pedro dos Santos, born in Rio in 1919, was a percussionist virtuoso, composer and inventor of
instruments that apparently included oddities such as the 'Tamba' (electrified bamboo drum) and
the mouth berimbau whistle. Nicknamed Perdo 'Sorongo' after the rhythm he invented, which
features throughout 'Krishnanda'. A highly spiritual man who was regarded as a philosopher by
many.
He worked with greats including Baden Powell, Elis Regina, Maria Bethany, Elza Soares,
Sebastião Tapajós, Roberto Ribeiro, Milton Nascimento, Clara Nunes, Paul Simon and Arthur
Verocai, playing on his legendary self-titled LP. In the same vein as Verocai and his self-titled LP,
'Krishnanda' was Pedro's chance to shine with his own, and only, solo recording.
Krishnanda was produced by Hélcio Milito, the drummer of Tamba Trio, and arranged by
conductor Joppa Lins, and originally released in 1968 on CBS (Brasil). Musically, the album
touches folk, samba, afro-brazilian and psychedelia plus added effects, with a lyrical depth and
diversity to match; themes including morality, perception, existence and ego.
Despite the genius of the record and the influence that it had on musicians at the time of release,
it disappeared into obscurity. Mr Bongo first discovered the record around 2003, through their
friend Julio Dui. Around that time Brazilian funk and bossa was the flavour of the day, so didn't
catch our ear immediately, however it continued improve with age and now they consider it to be
one of the best albums ever made, regardless of genre or origin.

The second ECM New Series album to fully showcase Estonian vocal group Vox Clamantis
is devoted to compositions by their great countryman, Arvo Pärt – whose music has
been the most performed globally of any living composer over the past five years from
his 75th birthday leading up to his 80th last September.
This album – titled ‘The Deer’s Cry’ after its opening track, an incantatory work for a
cappella mixed choir – is also the latest in a long, illustrious line of ECM New Series
releases to feature Pärt’s compositions, the very music that inspired Manfred Eicher to
establish the New Series imprint in 1984. Along with such classic works as Da Pacem
Domine, the new album includes first-time recordings of the a cappella pieces Drei
Hirtenkinder aus Fátima and Habitare Fratres. There is also an a cappella version of
Alleluia-Tropus, which Vox Clamantis previously recorded alongside instruments for the
Grammy Award-winning ECM New Series album ‘Adam’s Lament’.
Rarely recorded material makes up nearly half of this release, which includes three pieces
with subtle instrumental accompaniment: Von Angesicht zu Angesicht, Sei gelobt, du
Baum and Veni Creator.
Personnel: Vox Clamantis, Jaan-Eik Tulve (conductor); Mari Poll (violin); Johanna
Vahermägi (viola); Heikko Remmel, Taavo Remmel (double basses); Robert Staak (lute);

On 'The Sun Most Radiant', their fourth volume of music from the Eton Choirbook,
The Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford and director Stephen Darlington give glorious
performances of 15th-century English sacred music including first recordings of works by
John Browne and William Horwood.
This collection of music from the Eton Choirbook, the vast collection of English sacred music from
the early Renaissance, is the fourth in an acclaimed series by Stephen Darlington and The Choir of
Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford which has proved to be a thrilling encounter with the remarkable
world of the liturgy of Eton College Chapel in the late 15th century. This sumptuous volume
includes two first recordings: John Browne's second setting of the Salve Regina, and William
Horwood's Gaude flore virginali. This music was firmly rooted in the daily devotional life of the
College, appreciated by all and not just a worshipping élite. The boys and men of Christ Church
Cathedral choir maintain this tradition with a special affinity for this glorious repertoire and
deliver performances of unreserved commitment.

Schulhoff's music remained a well-kept secret for many years, due in part to its apparent
eclecticism. Fortunately, that situation has changed over the last twenty years or so. This CD
from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam contains piano works from the period 1920-1931, an
extremely fruitful period during which Schulhoff gave vent to his fascination for the new jazz
and dance music without entirely losing sight of classical tradition.
He was a brilliant pianist himself, making frequent appearances in the concert hall and later in
radio studios, renowned for his immaculate technique, fabulous memory and prowess as an
improviser. The combination of classical foundations and more decorative jazz elements in
Schulhoff's music suits Daahoud Salim Alvarez down to the ground, as he studied both classical
and jazz piano at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Schulhoff constantly faced the dilemma of
respecting traditions while at the same time being keen to distance himself from them. This is
illustrated, for instance, by his Concerto for piano and chamber orchestra - February 1923.

Georg Solti recorded the Beethoven Fourth three times – twice with the Chicago Symphony
Orchestra (1974, 1987) and in 1950 with the London Philharmonic. The LPO recording was
among Solti’s earliest Decca recording sessions and was issued, first on 78rpm and immediately
after on LP using Decca’s then revolutionary FFRR technology.
Fêted by the Victor Talking Machine Company in the early decades of the twentieth century,
Mischa Elman was a considerable presence in the recording world in those years. The arrival of
Jascha Heifetz in 1917 had a considerable impact on violin recordings in general, and public
interest in Elman flagged. Victor was Elman’s company for more than 40 years, but in 1954 he
decided to move to Decca for whom he recorded several concertos (something relatively absent
from his Victor repertoire).
For his recording of the Beethoven concerto he was paired with the young Solti, who allowed him
due elasticity and freedom of interpretation. While there’s no pretending that by 1955 when the
recording was made Elman was past his prime, it remains a fascinating account – a meeting of
two very different minds, with dynamic extremes on Solti’s part and an instinctive nineteenthcentury leaning towards portamento on Elman’s.
‘the flute tone is noticeably sweet […] Tonally and technically this is a wide-ranging record’ (Symphony No. 4) Gramophone, May 1951

Few composers have had their music rearranged with such variety and a high degree of success
as Johann Sebastian Bach. Mozart, Elgar and Webern, Mendelsohn, Brahms and Vaughan
Williams and countless others, not to mention jazz musicians such as Jacques Loussier, Dave
Brubeck, the Swingle Singers and even the rock band Procul Harum all rearranged his music.
This gem of a disc, originally released on ASV, presents more than a dozen of Bach’s pieces
rearranged for the piano, from the familiar (Myra Hess’s arrangement of Jesu, joy of man’s
desiring) to the quirky (Lord Berners’ arrangement of In dulci jubilo) and from the sonorously
imposing (the famous Chaconne from the Second Partita in the Busoni arrangement) to the
vertiginous (Busoni again, with ‘Nun freut euch, lieben Christen’). Most of the composerarrangers on this recording were themselves professional concert pianists and, in most cases,
believed that their function was not to assert their own musical personalities on top of, or
alongside, Bach’s so much as to try to recreate, as well as possible, what Bach might have written
had he been alive at the time when the transcriptions were made.

art of transcription, Rachmaninov’s very free version of movements from the E major Violin
Partita … in which Fergus-Thompson shows delicious delicacy.’ - Gramophone, October 1991

Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms: Violin Sonatas

AUSTRALIAN ELOQUENCE
£9.25
CLASSICAL
Georg Solti’s first recordings were as a pianist – those with the great German violinist Georg
Kulenkampff, here collected in their entirety. The two artists recorded Brahms’s G major sonata
in February 1947 and Beethoven’s ’Kreutzer’ Sonata in June 1947. They completed the Brahms
sonatas in July 1948. Sadly, this would be their only collaboration. Kulenkampff died on 4
October 1948, after a brief illness. He was only 50.
In these recordings with Kulenkampff, Solti’s exceptional abilities as a listener, his
accomplishments as a repetiteur and his instinct as a soloist combine in perfect harmony. He is
discreet but never excessively deferential in accompanimental passages, and bold but never
obtrusive when the piano assumes a soloistic or quasi-orchestral prominence, especially in the
Brahms sonatas and Beethoven’s ‘Kreutzer’. These recordings were made in the days when it was
still standard practice to favour the violin acoustically, perpetuating the invidious idea of the
pianist as mere ‘accompanist’. Yet through the very quality of his tone and impeccable judgement
of his rhythm, Solti redresses the balance despite being somewhat ‘recessed’ by the recording
team.
‘This recording reveals what a magnificent technique [Solti] possessed … his playing is pretty
good, and often remarkable for his very sparing use of the pedal […] [Kulenkampff’s playing] of
the slow movement is exquisitely expressive.’ - (Beethoven) Gramophone, February 1964
‘The great virtues of Kulenkampff were his sweet lyrical tone and his exquisite phrasing … this is
glorious playing [Brahms Op. 78] by both artists. The last page of the slow movement is really
tremendous, and touched with inspiration’ - (Brahms) Gramophone, May 1965

In the 1950s and much of the 60s, the great bass roles in the Italian repertoire, and the title part
in Don Giovanni, were synonymous with the name of Cesare Siepi.
Gifted with a commanding presence on stage and a firm, sonorous, pliant basso cantante – a true
successor to the mantle of Pinza and Pasero, his great Italian forebears – he was in demand in all
the major houses of the world. At the same time Decca used him regularly for complete
recordings of opera; he was a renowned interpreter of Verdi.
Many of these arias come from a recital he committed to disc in 1954, when his voice was at its
sappy best. In 1957 he was the natural choice for the implacable Alvise in La Gioconda, here
telling his unfaithful wife that she is about to die for her adultery. He was also inevitable casting
for the 1958 recording of Boito’s Mefistofele, whose two solos are given with relish and a spirit of
negation just right for the incarnation of the devil so sharply caught in Boito’s writing.
‘resonantly sung’ - (Don Carlo, Nabucco & Ernani arias) Gramophone, April 1955
‘anyone in doubt still of the artistic progress of the present singer might well begin by hearing the
grand, not to say majestic, fashion in which he handles both the minor section and flowers out
into the consoling major theme [of the Boccanegra aria]. It is Verdi most nobly done. […] first

In Portugal, a proliferation of new musical styles has been marked by the output of a notable
group of composers, including Eurico Carrapatoso, Sérgio Azevedo, Nuno Côrte-Real, and Daniel
Davis. These composers aspire to write music which is expressive human, perceptive, free, and
this disc boasts some of their most fascinating chamber music.
Eurico Carrapatoso is one of the most popular living Portuguese composers owing to the wisdom
and clarity of his writing, the subtlety of his orchestration, and the poetic and lyrical qualities of
his music. His piano quartet Espelho da alma ("Mirror of the Soul"), composed in 2009 for
Ensemble Darcos, comprises seven short pieces based on traditional Portuguese melodies,
brilliantly encapsulating different types of Portuguese folk music.
Sérgio Azevedo shows some stylistic affinities with recent composers such as Magnus Lindberg
and the late Sir Peter Maxwell Davies. Yet his music is the result of a synthesis of modernity and
tradition, marrying constructive rigour with clarity of perception. V mlhách…1912 ("In the
mists…1912") refers to a 1912 piano piece by Janácek called In the mists. Azevedo begins with
three short fragments from the Janácek, and through reorganization and metamorphosis,
constructs a new work of profound beauty.
The work of Nuno Côrte-Real is characterised by melodic lyricism, energetic rhythmic writing, and
transparent harmony. Lembras-te, meu amor, das tardes outonais..., for piano quartet (2014) is
inspired by a poem, Elegia do amor, by the Portuguese poet Teixeira de Pascoaes. The intricate
first section evokes the poem's nostalgic atmosphere; the central section is a long, hypnotic
passage, and the finale makes use of rhythmic and motivic play between the strings and the
piano.
The young Daniel Davis has proved himself one of the most notable composers of the younger
generation. His music concentrates on resonance, the exploration of atmospheres, and shows a
refined timbral sensitivity. Viagens, for piano quartet, was composed in 2013 for Ensemble
Darcos. The imaginative and varied writing oscillates between Stravinskyan rhythmic vigour and
lyrical, contemplative landscapes.

Sardinian saxophonist Andrea Mocci, one of the most accomplished musicians of his
generation, and the brilliant Japanese pianist Megumi Nakanomori, form Duo Vagues, and
present their debut album Légende. Their cultural backgrounds and personalities are as distinct
as the contrasting colouristic palettes of their instruments; the saxophone itself straddles the
worlds of classical and jazz.
Yet this CD represents a fusion of all these apparently conflicting elements, highlighting music's
power to unify cultures, timbres and genres.
Florent Schmitt's Légende is at the heart of this disc and their formation as a duo. Its continuous
motion, rising from moments of profound calm to ebullient overflowing crests, suggests "vagues"
- waves, inspiring their choice of name. Schmitt's Légende spans lyricism and impetuosity, the
saxophone's long-breathed, virtuosic flourishes occasionally slipping into the smoky world of jazz,
while the piano's rich harmonies anticipate Messiaen.
Jolivet's Fantaisie-Impromptu reflects his immersion in both atonality and jazz, its sinuous
saxophone line and enigmatic, tonally-ambiguous piano gestures juxtaposed with jaunty, jazzy
material reminiscent of Gershwin. Milhaud, a master of comic irony, takes us on a witty
adventure to South America in Scaramouche - the piece with which Andrea Mocci made his
professional debut, in the prestigious Sala Verdi in Milan, in 2011. In common with Milhaud's
piece, Françaix's 5 Danses Exotiques, dedicated to Marcel Mule (who premiered Schmitt's
Légende) embrace Latin American styles.
Creston's debonair, vivacious Sonata is a piece which Duo Vagues has been playing for years, yet
which always yields something new. Hindemith famously wrote sonatas for almost every
orchestral instrument, although the Sonata recorded on this disc began life as a piece for alto
horn. The saxophonist is called upon to read a poem by Hindemith during the piece, after which
the two instruments are engaged in fascinating dialogue, and it is this sense of dialogue, between
saxophone and piano, between different styles, and between the musicians themselves, that is so
integral to this debut disc from Duo Vagues.

PRIMA FACIE
CLASSICAL
World première recordings of music by Kenneth Hesketh and Richard Causton.
'A Land So Luminous' showcases the exceptional talent of these two British composers,
and is performed by the conductor Philip Headlam with The Continuum Ensemble and
an outstanding array of soloists.
"Kenneth Hesketh composes music of delicate luminosity" - Fiona Maddocks, The Guardian
"Causton is among our most imaginative composers" - Paul Driver, The Sunday Times
Kenneth Hesketh (b. 1968) and Richard Causton (b. 1971) are among the foremost U.K.
composers of their generation. 'A Land So Luminous' features their works for large ensemble, duo
and trio as well as solo flute, cello and piano. A strikingly diverse and atmospheric collection, the
music draws imaginative inspiration from a rich range of sources including Heinrich Hoffman's
nineteenth-century cautionary tales for children, Shock-Headed Peter, a poem by Marina
Tsvetayeva, shamanic ritual, Fats Waller, as well as Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, K. 622.
Conductor Philip Headlam, long-time champion of these composers, sees 'A Land So Luminous' as
an opportunity for Hesketh and Causton to gain recognition from audiences across the U.K. and
beyond, and illustrate their outstanding creativity and craftsmanship.
Containing music never previously recorded, the acclaimed Continuum Ensemble is joined by a
stellar line-up soloists: violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen ('fearless intensity' - The Guardian), soprano
Mary Bevan ('bewitching' - The Independent), flautist Lisa Nelsen ('a flautist and a half' - The
Times), cellist Joseph Spooner ('tremendous musicianship' - Fanfare) and Douglas Finch ('a true
virtuoso' - The Independent).
The Continuum Ensemble, led by co-artistic directors pianist/composer Douglas Finch and
conductor Philip Headlam, is dedicated to performing new and neglected music from the 20th
and 21st centuries in order to enrich audiences' knowledge and enjoyment of modern music. The
ensemble has earned consistent praise for performances in concerts and operas, at festivals and
for radio and television broadcasts as well as CD recordings including numerous world and U.K
premieres.

10 CD box set featuring ten original albums by world-class pianist Clara Haskil, recorded 19341960. Highlights from the history of interpretation, including concertos and solo works by Bach,
Scarlatti, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann and Ravel. Features appearances by such
contemporaries as Igor Markevitch, Ernest Ansermet, Alceo Galliera and Géza Anda.
According to the conductor Gustave Doret, Haskil was "one of those extraordinarily gifted
individuals whose very being is filled with music, who has that wonderful instinct for musical
expression that can be achieved neither by hard work nor by effort of will alone". These 10
original albums with bonus tracks dating from 1934 to 1960 constitute a fine documentation of
the highly cultivated and sensitive playing of an exceptional pianist.
Her legendary reputation as an interpreter of Mozart is in keeping with the large proportion of
excellent Mozart recordings. Further highlights in the history of interpretation, here taken from
the violin repertoire, are the Beethoven sonatas that Haskil and Arthur Grumiaux recorded (a
selection). Concertos as well as solo works by Bach, Scarlatti, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert,
Schumann and Ravel can also be heard, and taking part are several of her great contemporaries,
