In fact, the entire meeting was dedicated to these wonderful people and animals alike. Rotary Club of Point West Founded, April 1985 Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) is located in Santa Rosa, California on an expansive campus/training facility. If you haven’t had the opportunity to By Barry K. Hogan visit the CCI campus, it is open to public visits on Wednesdays and arrangements can be made to visit at other times. Graduations are open to the public and we are told that they are a real tearjerker to attend. Chandler Metcalf, a 14-year old multiple sclerosis sufferer and all around great person, told us of how he got his canine companion dog, Bernice. She knows 30 commands helping Chandler to pick up items, more on 2 J Curious Issue No. 36 – Mar 30 Rotary Club of Point West – 2011-2012 Board of Directors President, Jennifer Curtsinger; Secretary, Doug Weill; Treasurer, Drew Houghton; Administrative Assistant, George Daniels, Past President, Gary Hardesty, President-elect, Mike Cendro 5180 District Governor Directors Club Service I Community Service I International Service Vocational Service I Sergeant at Arms Don Levin Club Service II Trish Harrington Greg Garcia Community Service II Toney Sebra Desiree Wilson Publicity/Membership Lori Curry Jamie Nelson Vocational Service II Mary Lyn Kagan John Koogle, Karl Forste, Justin McWilliams and Bill McIntyre Visit our website for more information Governor Jack Taylor’s newsletter is available at rotary5180.net/my rotary http://pointwest.clubwizard.com Just Last Week continued push buttons and 28 other commands. Chandler says, “She’s awesome.” Lauren Ringel, Training Director of CCI gave us a brief overview of what goes on at CCI. Puppy raising is already known to some PWR club members, such as Walter, Roger and Mary Lyn, who have and are now raising puppies for CCI. After the puppies are raised they return to CCI for further training by the CCI staff. Upon returning to CCI the puppies go through a medical and temperament screening process. CCI makes sure that the puppies don’t have medical problems and have the “right stuff” to become a graduate of the program. The final training of the dogs consists of two semesters of 3 months each where the trainers make sure that the dogs are comfortable with their crates, have the right ambulatory skills, understand and perform the necessary commands. CCI will also categorize the dogs at this time in order to specialize their training. Semester two is the refinement stage where the dogs learn advanced commands, have weekly field trips and learn wheelchair work. After the dogs have passed the two-semester course they are ready to Wise Presidential Words Guy Heilman is doing fine and would appreciate hearing from you. I hope that everyone got a chance to sign the large card provided by Desiree Wilson at our meeting on March 30th. If you get a chance, give him a call, or drop by and see him. meet the clients over a two-week training course. Dogs and clients get to meet for the first time. In the first two days the dogs and the clients are rotated to see what dog and client would be the best match. Placement of a dog with a client is based upon the skills needed by the client and the dog’s ability to meet those skills. CCI has been supported by PWR for many years and provides a wonderful service to very needed people. PWR is lucky to have found such a giving organization providing such a life-saving service. The dogs are provided free to the clients although the cost to train the dogs runs $50K to $60K. Festa di Vino is tomorrow, March 31st. I hope to see many of you at this wonderful event. I am sure that “a good time will be had by all,” and many thanks to the Festa Committee. My apologies to Mark (Markie) Mraule and Rabobank for not making time at our March 30th meeting for the presentation of their sponsors check of $1,000. This is Festa’s largest sponsor this year! Thanks again Mark and Rabobank. 2 J Curious Issue No. 36 – Mar 30 Dyslexics in Action 2 dyslexics run into a bank and shout: “Air in the hands Mother Stickers! This is a _uck up! Selling my stuff if I die and other silly stuff By Anonymous The older you are and the longer you have been married, the funnier this is. One lazy Sunday morning the wife and I were quiet and thoughtful, sitting around the breakfast table. I said to her unexpectedly, “When I die, I want you to sell off all my stuff, immediately.” “Now why would you want me to do that?” she asked. “I figure a women as fine as yourself would eventually remarry and I don’t want some asshole using my stuff.” “She looked at me intently and said, “What makes you think I’d marry another asshole?” Men Who Lack Supervision (continued) 3 J Curious Issue No. 36 – Mar 30 4 J Curious Save the Date Mark Your Calendars!! Issue No. 36 – Mar 30 Shrink Or Bartender? Fireside Chat Ever since I was a child, I've always had a fear of someone under my bed at night. So I went to a shrink and told him: 'I've got problems. Every time I go to bed I think there’s somebody under it. I'm scared. I think I'm going crazy. ''Just put yourself in my hands for one year,” said the shrink. “Come talk to me three times a week and we should be able to get rid of those fears.” ”How much do you charge?” “Eighty dollars per visit,” replied the doctor.“ I'll sleep on it,' I said. Six months later the doctor met me on the street. “Why didn't you come to see me about those fears you were having?” he asked. ”Well, eighty bucks a visit three times a week for a year is an awful lot of money! A bartender cured me for $10. I was so happy to have saved all that money that I went and bought me a new pickup!” ”Is that so?” With a bit of an attitude he said, “and how, may I ask, did a bartender cure you?'' “He told me to cut the legs off the bed! Ain't nobody under there now!!!” FORGET THE SHRINKS. HAVE A DRINK & TALK TO A BARTENDER. By Mike Cendro, PresidentElect Fireside chats are the bread and butter of input into the upcoming president’s term. It helps the president shape and focus the term ahead. Without participation the president is without needed direction. As promised those gentlemen (and Karolina) below did not attend any fireside chats and therefore are subject to fines. Your check and completed questionnaire must be submitted to me as soon as possible so I can tabulate the feedback for the Board and complete this process. The following members were absent at a Fireside Chat resulting in a $25 fine, as long as the check comes with a completed questionnaire; without a questionnaire, the fine goes to $50. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Dan Hall-fine paid, paperwork received Dean Wilkie-fine paid, paperwork received Dennis Wessler Ed Harrington-paperwork received Gary Hardesty Greg Garcia Jim Coulter Jim Fletter Karolina Maluga Mike Barger Paul Adams Randy Kilgore Bob Sieglitz Roger Gilleland Ron Neal Scott Daulton Todd Murray Gary Disher –paperwork received, ($50 fine-defiant insubordination) 5 J Curious Issue No. 36 – Mar 30 Did you know???? • • • You can sign up for electronic delivery of a weekly Rotary International email.
