Taylor Program Coordinator Katie Sonnanstine Administrative Assistant Carol English Event Coordinator Colleen Renner We are a United Way–Funded Agency To the folks of Tipp City and Monroe Township “Knee high by the Fourth of July” (from my husband), “don’t swim for an hour after you eat,” and “it’s so hot you could fry an egg on the sidewalk.” Do these sayings conjure up memories of summers past? My childhood memories are of me and my best friend Donna, begging either my Mama or hers to take us to the pool. Those were the olden days when all the neighbors sat outside on their front lawns in the evening and talked back and forth across the street while the kids played games. Boy, those cement sidewalks were hot on bare feet. But summer these days is not only about hot temperatures. It’s about cool things to do, and TMCS is all about cool things! Get the family together and sign up for the Bicycle Trip on June 24, be seen on the “runway” at the American Girl Tea Party and Style show on July 24, or grab your buddies and “Race Around Tipp” avoiding roadblocks, detours, and completing tasks for your clues. If you’re planning a vacation, that’s great — but don’t forget TMCS Summer Vacation at the Park and TGIF. Kids 4–10 can have mornings filled with crafts, games, and stimulating activities, all without traveling too far and still come home to sleep in their own beds. See page 6&7 for details. Dancers, artists, and theater lovers, we didn’t leave you out. There are two weeks of Art Camp, a theatrical workshop, dancing, tumbling, watercolor, and weaving classes, just to name a few. Put that rake back in the garage and sign up for something fun, learn a new hobby, or just put a “new wrinkle” in your brain. Neither childhood nor summer lasts forever, so don’t squander the long, beautiful days ahead. Kick off your shoes and pretend you’re a kid again . . . but be careful of those hot sidewalks! See you around town!!! We are a Tipp City Foundation–Funded Agency © 2010 Tipp Monroe Community Services. Design and layout by Dragonfly Editorial of Tipp City (www.dragonflyeditorial.com). TMCS has been a part of our community for years . . . promoting health, recreation, and social services for all ages. Take a look at our journey! 1969 Tipp City begins opening school buildings and other public facilities for educational, recreational, and social gatherings. The “Community School Program” is born. 1975 The program expands into the arts with the creation of the Tipp City Players. 1976 The Community School Program is reorganized as “Tipp-Monroe Community Services” and given the green umbrella logo we still use today. Green represents hope; the umbrella represents the pooling of many community needs under one agency. 1977 The people of Tipp City and Monroe Township pass a half-mill levy to provide funding for TMCS for five years. The Mobile Meals program begins serving people confined to their homes. 1983–87 TMCS continues growing. Our Youth Center is remodeled, and we begin advertising our programs in the newspaper. 1988 Our educational, recreational, and cultural programs increase by 25%, and a new youth center director is hired. 1990 The Youth Center closes due to lack of a permanent home. 1992–99 TMCS programs continue to expand to include a Youth Basketball Program, Men’s Softball, and the now-famous Community-Wide Garage Sale. TMCS also provides assistance to the Lions Club for its eyeglass program, Dayton Metro Basketball, and the Mum Festival Committee. 1999–2002 Newspaper ads are replaced by the Community Connection, mailed to all residents of Tipp City and Monroe Township. The Community Relief program and the Christmas Gift Giving program are created to provide temporary relief to families in financial need. 2010 TMCS continues to assess the needs of the community and introduce new programs, workshops, and events. We provide administrative support for activities like SAY Soccer, Tipp City Junior Baseball, and Safety City. And our social service programs help children, adults, and seniors throughout our community.
