- Examples
With a clear understanding of attributes
and skills, as they apply to PVP, it is time to
make a character.
If you plan to specialize your character
early in the game it may be worth spending
some time with the EVE Character Creation
tool. This will enable you to gain a better
understanding of exactly which skills each
path will give you.
19
The Unofficial EVE Online PVP Guide
For attribute points, the best route is usually to mix them up between perception,
memory, and willpower. For general PVP play you balance the points. If you plan to
specialize you may want to add more points to one attribute that will help you learn specific
skills faster.

The simple truth of it is, that when it comes to character creation, the possibilities are
endless. If you do plan to create a new character solely for PVP, you should spend some
time with the Character creation tool mentioned earlier in this chapter. See how your paths
affect your attributes and skills, and then choose a character that fits for the way you intend
to specialize.

The Unofficial EVE Online PVP Guide
A Sample Training Plan
Now that you've started with a character let's take what we have learned about skills and
training and formulate a sample plan. This should help you further your understanding in the
area of training for PVP. The reality of it is that without proper training you'll likely just gimp
your character and PVP play will end up frustrating instead of fun like is should be.
For the purpose of an example lets assume that I choose to create a Minmatar character.
To start out with I choose to specialize my skills in ships (the second character on the
minmatar list). Personally I enjoy flying larger ships so I decide to make my first goal getting
into a battlecruiser. I have flown the cyclone before, and as a PVP ship it served me well, so
that is the ship I will choose.
When training to fly one I want to take into consideration all of the skills I will need to fit
the ship, and not just train the skills to fly one. Let's jump ahead for a moment and look at a
recommended setup for the Cyclone. From the ship setup chapter we get this setup:

This setup includes tech II weapons, heavy missile launchers, and modules for speed,
tackling, and capacitor.
22
The Unofficial EVE Online PVP Guide
You could spend the time and look at all of these modules individually and formulate your
plan for training from there. Of course that would take you a lot of time, and take away from
having fun in the game. Instead lets formulate our plan the ease way.
Important Note Before We Look at a Sample Plan: Some of this plan covers materials that
we have not yet covered in this guide. If any of it seems confusing it will all become clear by
the time you are finished the EVE PVP Guide.
Step 1:
Open up the EVEMon Program and add your character to the software. The software
provides instructions if you need help with this. When you are done the program should look
like this:
The screen displays your character, all of your current skills and other relevant info about
your toon. With your character added its time to begin formulating your plan.
23
The Unofficial EVE Online PVP Guide
Step 2:
Click on the plans menu and then on new to add a new training plan to the software.
After you have done so you will be presented with the main screen for planning. Notice the
tabs for Ship Browser and Item Browser. These tabs allow you to view single items in EVE
and add the training requirements for those items to your plan.
In this case you can see I am viewing the cyclone itself. With my current training I need
to take Minmatar Cruiser to Level III before being able to train Battlecruisers I. To add these
skills to my training plan I simply click the Add All to Plan Button at the bottom of the
screen.
24
The Unofficial EVE Online PVP Guide
Step 3:
Find all of the equipment on the item list in EVEMon and begin adding the required skills
to your training plan. When you are finished click on the Plan Queue tab and you will be
presented with a list of skills that you need to train. You've just formulated a training plan
that will get you into your desired ship, with an excellent setup for PVP. However were not
quite done yet.
With my plan – to equip and fly this ship I would need to train 19 skills that I don't own
yet, and train 18 that I do have to a higher level. The total time to train all of these skills is
66 days with my current learning skills (I really should have trained those learning skills it
would likely cut that time by 15-20 days).
I should also note that I added some repair drone skills to the list which accounts for
about 13 days of training time. The cyclone has a drone bay with a capacity of 40. With this
ship I would use a mix of repair drones for defense, and scout drones to help catch smaller
faster ships.
25
The Unofficial EVE Online PVP Guide
Now 66 days may seem like a long time, however it really isn't. In only a couple days I
will have the required skills to fly a battlecruiser. After a few more I will be able to fit it
decently with tech I guns, and most of the required equipment on my list. So in this case I
would train my skills in that order.
Step 4:
There are some other considerations in your skill training. Skills like engineering, and
electronics are important to being able to fit your ship. If EVEmon doesn't automatically take
these skills up to level 5, you should add them manually to your training plan. There may be
other skills you want to add manually like motion prediction, etc.
For the most part you can always do this later. The important part is that you now have
a goal to work towards and you can begin training accordingly.
Final Thoughts
With a training plan in place you have a goal to work towards. An understanding of the
skills in EVE is paramount to your success, and having something to work towards with your
training will help you to stay on track to becoming a PVP master. With the character
provided in the example I would actually train for a tech I setup first.
To accomplish this I would train the ship skills, medium projectiles to level 4, and then
train the necessary skills to for the other equipment in the setup. Working this way I could
be flying the battlecruiser within a week, and continue to work towards the tech II setup
while enjoying my new ship!
Another important thing to notice is that: Once I am done training this character for this
fairly specialized setup, I can start again with a new training plan. In this case a logical next
step would be to train for a Command Ship, or one of the tech II cruisers (since I will already
have specialization in medium turrets).
26
The Unofficial EVE Online PVP Guide
Conclusion
By now you should have a clear understanding of how attributes, and skills affect your
character. You should also have an idea of how you are going to train your character.
What about the rest of it? A character is no good by itself. Without a ship, all you'll be
able to do is stand around in the space station looking lost, you may even have to take a job
flipping space burgers just to earn a living!
Not to worry. In the next chapter we will help you get a ship, and in the following chapter
we will help you equip it. Ship selection and setup is very important to becoming effective at
PVP.

So far in this guide we have covered
characters, skills, and ships. You should
now be ready to begin setting up for battle.
If you are new to the world of EVE, you
may want to hold off choosing your ship
until you've read a little further. This will
enable you to get an even better idea of
what it takes to fly one, and allow you to
choose a PVP style that works for you.
In the next chapter we will talk about the
basics of ship setup, and then after that we
will give you 120 + ship-specific setups that
will work well for PVP.

About Modules
When choosing how to setup in a group,
look at the roles, the size of your group,
and then factor in your intended targets.
The most important thing to ensure is that
