Kenwasalwaysdeeplypassionateaboutthefilm
whichcausedoutrageintheearlyseventies,andto

scissors.Fordecadeshebelievedthatthematerial
excisedfromTheDevilshadbeenlostordestroyed,
andsoitwaswithahugesenseoftriumphthateditor
MikeBradsellwasabletoreconstructa‘Director’s
Cut’whichpremieredattheNationalFilmTheatrein
2004.ItwasKen’shopethatthismagnificentrestored
versionwouldbemadeavailabletothepublic,butin
thedecadethathaspassedsincethen,thestudiohave
remainedtooalarmedbyitsfierypowertoreleaseit.

designs,ShirleyRussell’sawe-inspiringcostumes,and
PeterMaxwellDavies’sdizzyingscore,TheDevils
providessasensoryassaultwhichoverwhelmsthe
viewer.LikePowellandPressburgerbeforehim,
Russellunderstoodthemagicofcinemaandwasn’t
afraidtopushattheboundariesoftheform.His
magnumopusisasymphonyofsightandsound,
boastingacommandingcareer-bestturnfromOliver
Reed,andaperformanceofsustainedandtwisted
brilliancebyVanessaRedgrave.
ThefactthatTheDevilsstillhasthepowertoshockis
atestamenttoitsbrilliance,butitsrealstrengthslie
intheseriousundercurrentsofstorywhichstillhas
contemporaryresonancetoday.Thisisamasterpiece
