The Hazeldene Gretna Green Wedding Brochure 2016 - 2017 Hello, Welcome to The Hazeldene and thank you for your interest. We are a small family business with an 11 bedroom hotel in the wedding capital of the UK; Gretna Green. There are of course B&B’s and Guest Houses in Gretna Green but there are only 3 actual hotels; the difference being, a hotel offers food, restaurant and a bar. The Hazeldene offers a home from home feel and our locals continually get a mention on TripAdvisor for their welcome and friendliness. We take great pride in what we are good at; namely being a hotel which serves good home cooked food at a reasonable cost, with a well priced bar. Also included in this guide are other specially selected 'wedding suppliers' who, from personal experience, we know are good. We simply put them in touch with you. Unlike many other hotels and accommodation venues, we do not accept commission from these suppliers. We merely ask them to offer their services at the best price for Hazeldene customers. Being a small, dedicated team, we will ensure you receive our personal attention on any planning issues, advice or other queries you may have. Included are some sample menus for you to peruse; you can choose one of our menus or you can personalise the food to reflect your taste and be totally bespoke, if that’s what is required for your day. Throughout this brochure you will find little snippets and nuggets of information which may interest you and assist you in your planning. We hope you find it useful. If you wish to come along and view our rooms, sample our home cooked food or simply have a look around, please do not hesitate to contact us. Some couples prefer to view the local area and services a few times before their big day; if you have booked your wedding with us, we will offer a special discounted room rate for you and provide you with a taster menu for your chosen selections. Please mention this offer when booking your accommodation. 'Your day is our day and we look forward to being a part of it.' A Brief History of Gretna Green Why Flee to Gretna Green? Put simply...it was due to a change in English marriage laws and a happy accident of geography! In the middle of the 18th century, England's Law Lords approved new laws to tighten marriage arrangements. Couples had to reach the age of 21 before they could marry without their parents consent, and the marriage had to take place in a Church. Scottish law however was different; you could marry on the spot, in a simple ‘marriage by declaration’, or ‘handfasting’ ceremony, requiring only two witnesses and assurances from the couple that they were both over the age of 16 and free to marry. With such a relaxed arrangement within easy reach of England, it soon led to the inevitable influx of countless thousands of young couples running away to marry over the border. Gretna Green was the first village in Scotland and conveniently situated on the main route from London into Scotland. With Gretna Green perfectly placed to take advantage of these differences in the two countries marriage laws, and with an angry 'father-of-the-bride' usually in hot pursuit, the runaway couple would waste no time. Therefore as soon as they reached Scottish soil in Gretna Green, they would find a place of security where they could marry in haste! Weddings in Gretna Green today... Nowadays over 1,500 weddings and nearly 200 blessings take place within the Famous Blacksmiths, the original marriage house since 1754 which is directly across from The Hazeldene. One of our preferred partners; Anvil Hall hosted 550 ceremonies in 2015 and they will be doing many more as their 100 year anniversary beckons in 2017. Gretna Green and Gretna continue to break records with around 4,500 weddings taking place every year, which is about 15% of all weddings in Scotland.
