2015 Newsletter PACIFIC HEALTH MINISTRY Providing Spiritual Care and Education INTRODUCING OUR NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Rev. Anke Flohr September 1, 2015 will be a joyful homecoming as Pacific Health Ministry welcomes Rev. Anke Flohr as its new Executive Director. Rev. Flohr is returning to PHM to assume executive leadership after five years as Professional Leader and Education Supervisor at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, Ontario Canada. Rev. Flohr is no stranger to Hawaii or to Pacific Health Ministry (PHM). Her connections to Hawaii and to PHM run deep. Rev. Flohr met Rev. John Moody, the first Director of Interfaith Ministries of Hawaii (now PHM) when he and his wife were visiting Germany in 1992. Rev. Flohr was a campus pastor at the University of Hamburg at the time. Having spent time in the Pacific islands as a counselor in a church sponsored rehabilitation program in Papua New Guinea in the mid-eighties, she was invited to meet these visitors from Hawaii. A year later, Rev. Flohr would begin what she describes as her "Journey of Discovery" as a Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) resident at PHM. Her residency teachers included Rev. Glenn Harada, Dr. Kekuni Blaisdell, Chaplains Clarence Liu, Gail Sugimoto Leong, Al Miles and John Moody who she says taught her to "know what I see, not see what I know"…... "I learned cultural humility; how to be patient; how to embrace ambiguity". At the same time, she became more knowledgeable and skillful. Following the completion of her residency, Rev. Flohr entered PHM's CPE supervisory training. During her years of supervisory training, Rev. Flohr served as chaplain to The Queen's Medical Center, Kapi'olani Medical Center, and Hawaii State Hospital before becoming chaplain to the Good Samaritan Pohai Nani, where she served from July of 1997 to May of 2010. In 2002, Rev. Flohr was certified as a Supervisor by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education and served as PHM's Director of Education until 2010. She was also a 2003 Pacific Century Fellow. John Moody, Anke Flohr and Clarence Liu in 2000 In 2010, Rev. Flohr relocated to Toronto to become the Professional Leader and Education Supervisor at Sunnybrook Health Center. There Rev. Flohr, in addition to supervising the CPE program, facilitated inter-professional education and corporate initiatives such as person/family centered care, quality end of life care, a senior friendly culture, and staff well being and resilience. With a strong interest in validating and improving the effectiveness of spiritual care, she was principal investigator of two practice based research projects. Rev. Flohr also served as adjunct faculty at the University of Toronto. PHM looks forward to the exceptional professional leadership Rev. Anke Flohr will bring. 1245 Young Street, Suite 204, Honolulu, HI 96814 Website: www.phmhawaii.org Administrative Hours of Operation: Telephone: (808)591-6556 Fax: (808)593-9206 Email: [email protected] 7:30am-4:30pm Monday - Friday CHAPLAIN NEWS 2015 Staff Aloha to Chaplain Susy Gaffney who retired on July 31st after serving as chaplain to the VA Center for Community Living and most recently, to Legacy of Life Hawaii. Along with Chaplain Dreflak-Utley were Chaplains Nathan Kohashi and Summer Intern Alfred Guerrero. Before entering the sterile area of the Surgery Department, the chaplains had to suit up in sterile gowns, shoe covers, and caps. After a brief welcome from Chaplain Kohashi, Chaplain Dreflak-Utley explained the Hawaiian elements used for the blessing. She invited the twenty-five surgery and other hospital staff to add a pinch of Hawaiian salt to the water-filled Koa bowl. With the help of the department’s manager, Chaplain Dreflak-Utley blessed the hands of those who wanted with the salt water. “May these hands bring comfort and healing to those they touch,” were the words of blessing over each recipient. The blessing ceremony concluded with a Hawaiian blessing chanted by Chaplain Guerrero. He also sprinkled the sides of the operating room using Ti Leaves and the blessed water. Blessings like this one are part of the clinical experiences of the chaplain students of PHM. Dr. Sergei Petrov, PHM’s Director of CPE and Community Education has been invited to participate in the development and implementation of the Hawaii Inter-professional Training for End of Life Communication Skills (HI-TECS ), directed by Emilio A. Ganitano Jr. M.D. of the John A. Burns School of Medicine and Lorrie Wong PhD, RN, CHSE-A of the School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene. The pilot project will engage University of Hawaii (UH) students of medicine, nursing and social work, as well as PHM’s chaplaincy residents in live simulations of end of life care situations. The UH Drama department will assist by providing actors to create situations like those professionals may encounter in actual work settings. Students will take on the roles of professional caregivers, with their peers and faculty providing observation and feedback using facilitated interactive group discussion. Based on outcomes of previous evidence based professional studies, this project is expected to show improvements in students’ knowledge, skills, confidence and competence. We are excited to be included in this project and to offer this state of the art training experience to PHM’s CPE residents. Rev. Dr. Petrov is currently participating in project planning meetings. Chaplains Al Miles and Nathan Kohashi will participate in the project facilitator training and assist with debriefing of simulations, which will begin on October 13. BOARD OF DIRECTORS Greetings from the Board of Directors. BOARD OF DIRECTORS President Mernie Miyasato Crawford Vice President Ralph Aona Treasurer Ronald Gouveia Secretary Walter Yoshimitsu Members of the Board Joanne Arizumi Patricia Camero Mimi Harris C. Mike Kido Michael Magaoay Scott Makuakane William W. Paty Alice Tucker As summer’s end approaches, PHM is also at a time of transition – into a new era of leadership. As noted, the Rev. Anke Flohr officially begins her tenure as our new Executive Director on September 1 st. We look forward to her ‘homecoming’ to Hawaii and to PHM, having previously served with distinction as a Staff Chaplain and in CPE Supervision. As we welcome Rev. Flohr, we also say a heartfelt Aloha and Mahalo to Ms. Linda Rich, LCSW, our Interim Administrator for the past year – plus. The value of Linda’s contributions cannot be overstated. Not only did she serve much longer than anticipated, she successfully and skillfully steered PHM through multiple Contract renewal negotiations, numerous Chaplain assignment changes, a comprehensive fiscal audit and a reassessment of existing policies, procedures and organizational structures, identifying opportunities for improvement. Above and beyond her organizational and administrative contributions, Linda embodied a ‘Pastor’s spirit’ in her peaceful presence, discerning eyes, ears, mind and heart, creating a calm center of gravity for Staff, the Board and all our constituencies during a time ripe for turmoil. Through her leadership, the PHM to which Rev. Flohr returns is primed for its next chapter of life and growth. Remarkable, and more than anyone could have envisioned possible. At the same time, we are sad to also lose 2 Directors from our Board: Mr. Tom Teson, CFO of Tori Richards, Inc. and a member for over 20 years, and Mr. Ron Gouveia, CPA, our Board Treasurer. Tom has been an indispensable voice of reason throughout PHM’s history, always providing his clear-eyed perspectives to inform our most difficult decisions, and steady oversight of our finances. Ron joined our Board more recently. Building on the foundation Tom laid, Ron continued and completed the effort to update our accounting practices providing the fiscal clarity necessary to support our decisionmaking. Each of these special individuals has left an indelible mark on PHM and its success. I personally express my heartfelt thanks to each and extend the hope they will remain in our circle of support.
