The Autumn programme leading up to
Christmas has a fantastic selection of
shows to brighten up the darker nights.
The Friends of the Caird Hall Organ once
again, stage a brand new event to add to
their portfolio – Come and Sing with highly
acclaimed classical composer Paul Mealor.
You do have the option to participate in the
performance or be a member of the audience,
but don’t delay book your choice now! Also the
Friends repeat the hugely popular Silent Music
Night featuring the comedy Harold Lloyd’s
Safety First, in November.
The Chinese State Circus return with a
spectacular new production, DYNASTY. Watch
the amazing skills and techniques of a troupe
of 30 highly trained acrobats.
The Irish pop sensation – Shane Filan is in solo
concert showcasing all the Westlife favourites
as well as his own recent tracks.
We are delighted to stage Lennon Through a
Glass Onion which celebrates the genius and
music of John Lennon, featuring West End star
Daniel Taylor. This will definitely be a “hot
ticket” for the Autumn so do not delay
in booking.

Singers from all parts of Scotland come
together to perform Gabriel Fauré’s muchloved Requiem, Handel’s majestic Zadok the
Priest and Paul Mealor's jubilate Deo.
Paul Mealor has been described as ‘the most
important composer to have emerged in
Welsh choral music since William Mathias’
(NewYork Times, 2001). Topping the Classical
Charts for six weeks with his bestselling
album, A Tender Light (featuring Tenebrae
Choir and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra)
in November 2011, he also broke records by
being the first classical composer to hold
both the classical and pop chart No1 at the
same time in December 2011, securing the UK
Christmas No 1 with his piece for The Military
Wives Choir and Gareth Malone.
In 2012, Mealor was voted the nation's
favourite living composer during the UK
Classic Hall of Fame.

Emperor Concerto
In the wake of the huge success of his
Right Here tour in early 2016, which follows
on from the release of his hit album ‘Right
Here’ in 2015, Westlife frontman Shane Filan
has announced a second major UK tour in
October 2016.
Con brio means 'with brilliance', and that’s
exactly what British pianist Paul Lewis
will bring to Beethoven’s epic Emperor
Concerto – a stunning start to our Season
in Dundee. First, though, guest conductor
Cristian Măcelaru detonates Jörg Widmann’s
outrageous little spoof of Beethoven, and
unleashes the raw energy of Dvořák’s Seventh
Symphony. This tempestuous portrait of a
nation awakening to freedom packs a serious
emotional punch.
The Irish pop sensation will showcase
Westlife favourites as well as his own recent
tracks. Following Shane’s amazing success as
frontman with Westlife - one of the world’s
most successful bands of the last few decades
- the new tour dates promise to show just
why Shane is well loved in his own right.

Following its Off-Broadway New York success,
this celebration of the genius and music of
John Lennon comes to Dundee.

Inspired by the song Glass Onion, which was
John Lennon’s postscript to The Beatles, this
show peels away the layers of time and myth
to offer clear insight into essence of the life
and astonishing talent of one of the world’s
most treasured icons.
Part-concert and part-biography, this twohander featuring West End star Daniel Taylor
showcases 31 hits of Lennon and Lennon/
McCartney including Imagine, Revolution
and Jealous Guy in a kaleidoscope collage of
song, word and emotion.

Brian Poole & The Tremeloes the band that
broke the Liverpool stranglehold and went on

Deep in the Russian forests, a mysterious
breeze stirs the waters. When guest
conductor Eivind Gullberg Jensen works
his magic anything’s possible: whether
it’s Liadov’s old Russian fairy tales or
Rachmaninov’s glittering Third Symphony – a
song of longing for a lost world, with tunes
to die for and a big-band swing. Or, most
spectacular of all, the great Russian virtuoso
Nikolai Lugansky throwing everything he
has – and then some – at Prokofiev’s showstopping piano concertos.
Controversial, ponytailed P.J. Proby whose
trouser splitting shocked the nation, was
a Melody Maker teen idol award winner in
1964 and spent 91 weeks in the charts.

ultimate, and probably never to be repeated,
line-up. From Liverpool, where it all started,

in the charts.

Silent Movie Night
A unique opportunity to view two classic
silent films with Donald MacKenzie of the
Odeon, Leicester Square, London providing
the improvised organ accompaniment.
Featuring the 1911 film Dundee Courier - The
Production of a Great Daily Newspaper and
one of the most famous comedies of the
period, Harold Lloyd in Safety Last.
The 1911 film shows the complete process
of the daily newspaper with street scenes
of pre-Great War Dundee and sequences
including printing technology that has
since been superseded by the digital age.
September 2016 will mark the 200th
anniversary of the launch of the Courier.
The comedy is the famous Harold Lloyd
in Safety Last, in which our hero attempts
to impress his girlfriend by pretending to
enjoy status far above his lowly position
as a department store sales assistant. This
film includes the well-known scene in which
Lloyd dangles from a clock on the side of a
skyscraper above moving traffic.
Safety Last is recognised as one of the
greatest film comedies of the silent era.

Remembrance 2016
The traditional Festival, staged by the Royal
British Legion Scotland's Angus, Perthshire
and Fife Area, offers an opportunity to
remember and give thanks for the sacrifice of
those lost.
The Parade of National and Ex-Service
Standards and the Muster of Regular and
Reserve Forces, Cadets, Emergency Services
and ex-Service organisations is followed
by a musical programme and an Act of
Remembrance.
Featured are the Central Band of The Royal
British Legion Scotland, The Perth and District
Pipe Band, and vocalists Billy Naismith and
pop and jazz soprano Amy Hawthorn.

‘Beyond the Barricade’ after appearing
in the Manchester and London casts of
Les Misérables.

Beyond the Barricade after playing the lead
role of Eponine in the West End production of
Les Misérables, and Rebecca Vere who played
Cosette in Les Misérables.

Brahms - Symphony No1
Tchaikovsky’s technically demanding and
much-loved violin concerto reunites DSO with
violinist Anna-Liisa Bezrodny in the Caird
Hall. Accompanying this is Wagner’s vivid
and turbulent Flying Dutchman Overture and
Brahms’ first symphony. Brahms struggled in
the shadow of Beethoven for nearly fifteen
years in writing this work. It was worth the
wait: with its lyricism and thematic unity,
this is widely regarded as one of the greatest
symphonies of the Austro-German tradition.

The Elvis Years
The Elvis Years is an outstanding musical
production which brings to the stage the
incredible and compelling story of the ‘king
of rock and roll’ - Elvis Presley.
With a top line-up of actor-musicians,
multiple costume changes and nostalgic film
footage, this glittering two-hour production
charts the musical and emotional highs and
lows of Hollywood and finally the legendary
Las Vegas concerts.
The lead role is perfectly portrayed by
Mario Kombou (from West End production
Jailhouse Rock).

The keyboard plays a major part in the
performance. The University Orchestra are
delighted to welcome back Dr David Mowle
who will be the soloist in Beethoven’s 4th
Piano Concerto, while Andrew Macintosh will
be playing the organ in James Whitbourn’s
Luminosity which also requires solo viola,
performed by the leader of the orchestra,
Lars Robertson.
As well as the unusual instrumentation
(including tam-tam and tambura), the work
also can incorporate dancers and we're
delighted to welcome members of the
University Dance Society.

Deacon Blue return with the much
anticipated follow-up to Top 20 album,
The Hipsters, with their 8th studio album
A New House, released on 8 September.
Alongside over six million album sales,
twelve UK Top 40 singles and two UK
Number One albums, Deacon Blue are also
one of the most passionate live bands around
today. They are taking to the road again for
a national tour, and will be playing tracks
in support of the new album, A New House,
alongside classics such as Dignity, Real Gone
Kid and Fergus Sings The Blues. Ricky Ross
says: “I am more excited about this new
album than any record we've made up until
now. It's going to be great to perform live.
As well as that, we have a huge catalogue
of songs from our other records we will

Choirs Concert
The High School of Dundee presents a
concert celebrating the wide range of music
performed by pupils aged 7 to 18. The
concert will culminate in a performance by
the Symphony Orchestra of Beethoven’s
legendary Symphony No5; this work has had
an inestimable influence since its première in
1808, from standard symphonic and operatic
repertoire to 1970s disco. In addition, there
will be performances by the Symphonic Band,
Concert Band, the Sinfonia, and the school’s
five choirs.
NYCoS Dundee Choir returns to the Caird Hall
for its annual winter concert.
The singers, aged 8-17 years, will showcase a
varied repertoire.
Concert in aid of local charities.

Fair in one venue. The event specialises
in selling rare and collectable vinyl and
CD’s with dealers from all over the UK, and
also thousands of bargains with prices
starting at 50p. There is the opportunity
to sell items and obtain top prices. A free
valuation service is on offer for your rare
and interesting items, ideal for insurance
purposes.

Quartetto di Cremona
The reputation of the Cremona Quartet was
established by a series of performances in
the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome,
followed by an invitation from the Quartet
Society of Milan to play the complete cycle of
Beethoven’s quartets. The quartet regularly
perform in some of Europe’s most famous
venues, including the Konzerthaus of Berlin
and the Wigmore Hall in London.

Katherine Bryan, appointed principal flute
in the RSNO at the age of 21, has been a
concerto soloist with other orchestras and
has broadcast live on radio and television.
Scott Mitchell, who teaches and plays at
the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, has
performed extensively in chamber music in
Europe, South America and the Middle East.
Their programme includes pieces by Dvořák
and his compatriot Drdla, as well as by
Debussy and Poulenc.

Maxwell Quartet
The Maxwell Quartet became the first Artists
in Residence at the Royal Conservatoire of
Scotland, having met there in 2010. Since
then, they have performed throughout the UK
and have been declared by Classical Music
Magazine to be "one of the front-runners in
young chamber music groups in the UK".
