Newsletter Volume 59, Number 4 February 17, 2016 Dear Friends, The season of Lent is a six-week period of preparation and self-examination that is historically a time to prepare ourselves for the right celebration of Easter. Lent began on Feb 10th with our Ash Wednesday Intergenerational Event – “Prepare the Way”. Someone asked me after worship on Sunday, “Am I supposed to give something up for Lent?” I told them that historically some have given up something that is meaningful or valuable to them as a way of creating space and time to remember how dependent we are on God’s love and care. That is to say, giving up chocolate for Lent because you want to lose a pound or two is not exactly a Lenten discipline (maybe a diet discipline). But, giving up something may help you focus more on God. But it could also be that you take on something that will accomplish that purpose. The goal is the same for either - giving up or taking on something - to focus our attention and some time on God’s place in our hearts and lives. Towards that goal, we have begun a sermon series that will go throughout Lent. The theme is “Spiritual Practices for the Storm.” We began this last Sunday by reading the parable that Jesus gives us in Matthew 7:24-27 about the house builders. The foolish house builder built his house on sand, but the wise house builder built his house on rock. When the storm came the house built on sand was destroyed, but the one built on rock withstood the storm. Jesus uses this parable to call all of us to build our lives upon the truth of the Gospel. The goal of the sermon series is to identify spiritual practices (things we can do today) that will help us stand firm when storms come into our lives. We began on February 14th with a focus on Patience and Forbearance. The other spiritual practices we will examine are: February 21 – Prayer February 28 – Generosity March 6 – Simplicity March 13 – Gratitude March 20 – Obedience The goal is to provide some practical ways to practice these spiritual building blocks to ensure that WHEN a storm comes your “house” will stand. Remember also that there are FREE Devotionals for you to take home in the Connecting Point Lobby. And, Staff and Leadership will be writing a Lenten Blog Devotional again as we did in Advent. You can get to the Blog by visiting the front page of our Website – www.flpc.org - and click on the “Blog” button at the very top of the page. Once there you can sign up to have notifications sent to you whenever a new blog is posted. Take time and make space to prepare for Easter. It will deepen your discipleship and your ability to put your head, heart and hands in the service of Jesus Christ. See you in worship! Bring a friend if you can. Ellen Ellen F. Family Promise Volunteers Needed Our next Family Promise host week is March 20-27, Holy Week. This is when we house homeless families in our church in the evenings for the week. Please consider being part of this opportunity as it takes many helpers. We need folks to set up rooms, prepare meals, serve a dinner, spend the night, do laundry, drive folks, and shop for food/supplies. Please stop by the Connecting Point desk to sign up for an opportunity. If you have questions, please contact Jackie Cominotti or Jodi Beckham. IT IS THAT TIME OF YEAR!! The Congregational Nominating Committee is beginning work on identifying members of our congregation who have the spiritual maturity and gifts to serve as Ruling Elders and Deacons. See the next page for a suggestion form that asks you to identify persons you think would serve our congregation wisely and faithfully. You do not need to ask someone if you can suggest them before you do so. But, please prayerfully suggest leadership for the future of FLPC! SALT SHAKERS BEGINS THIS MONTH! WHO? Anyone interested in good food, fellowship, and getting to know more about your church friends! WHAT? Planning Dinner and Covered Dish; WHERE? FLPC Fellowship Hall WHEN? Thursday, February 25, 6:00 PM During the months of March, April, and May the Care & Connections Ministry will be sponsoring dinners for six people, whether singles or couples. Subsequent dinners will be held in the homes of the participants, one dinner each month, or in a restaurant if this is what the group decides. This is an opportunity to meet new friends and fellowship with old ones. If you have any questions, please contact Ward Warren, [email protected] or 318-5145. If you would like to participate, please use the link below, sign-up after worship or call the church office by Tuesday, February 23. https://secure.accessacs.com/access/eventlogin.aspx? id=i26tHp9TTaWdBRZxmcyS0Q==&site=91571&ReturnUrl=events% 2fwz_people.aspx&ChurchID=4607&EventID=103259&sn=91571 Forest Lake Presbyterian Church Congregational Nominating Committee – 2016 Suggestion Form for Elders and Deacons In the Presbyterian form of government, the congregation may suggest to the nominating committee members of the congregation to serve as elders and deacons. Persons suggested should be active members of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church, possess the gift of leadership, be mature in their faith, and be willing to serve to the Glory of God. As you consider whom God is calling to serve, keep in mind the following characteristics, as they are described in the Book of Order of the Presbyterian Church (USA): The Character and Qualifications of Elders “Elders. . . . exercise leadership, government, and discipline and have responsibilities for the life of a particular church as well as the church at large. . . .” (Book of Order G-6.0302) “Elders should be persons of faith, dedication, and good judgment. Their manner of life should be a demonstration of the Christian gospel, both within the church and in the world.” (G-6.0303) Care should be given to nominate persons who are motivated by the calling of God and the desire to glorify God, not as reward for past church service or community service. The Character and Qualifications of Deacons “The office of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of compassion, witness, and service after the example of Jesus Christ. Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, of exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, sincere compassion, and sound judgment should be chosen for this office.” (G-6.0401) “It is the duty of deacons, first of all, to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in dist both within and beyond the community of faith.” (G-6.0402) I recommend that the Nominating Committee consider ___________________________________for the office of _____ Elder _____ Deacon _____ Either I think this person should be nominated to serve as a leader in our church because: All persons suggested for consideration and all members of the church must understand that the nominating committee is responsible for maintaining the balance required by the Book of Order; therefore, some of the worthy people suggested by the membership may not be nominated for office. Once names have been submitted, the committee will prayerfully select six people to nominate as elders and seven people to nominate as deacons, based on the spiritual gifts needed for the current Session and Diaconate. Then the committee will contact these candidates to ask them if they are willing to serve. Lenten Taizé Services @ FLPC Taize Services provide time to worship in a contemplative manner that helps us prepare ourselves for the great celebration of Easter. Come as you are to the Sanctuary at 7pm. Communion is served, and quiet reflection helps us practice waiting for God. This year, these services will take place on February 28, March 6, and March 13, all in the sanctuary starting at 7pm. Maundy Thursday March 24 Maundy Thursday is the day when we remember that Jesus ate his “Last Supper” with the disciples before he was betrayed and arrested. Your own celebration of Easter will be greatly enriched if you participate in both our Maundy Thursday and Good Friday celebrations. On March 24, there are two opportunities to take communion in remembrance of Jesus’ last meal with his disciples. Upper Room Communion First, everyone is invited to take communion in a “Come-and-Go” service between 4:00 and 5:30 in the sanctuary. Feel free to come as you are. Communion will be celebrated in small groups of 12 (think Disciples) in the Sanctuary. You will wait in the Parlor and be escorted into the Sanctuary in small groups. Each group will spend 15 minutes taking communion together and then you will be free to go. There is no cost for this celebration, and reservations are not required. Just come! Seder Supper Second, we are offering again a celebration that includes a partial “Seder Supper” from the Jewish tradition. The celebration of the Seder leads directly into a celebration of Communion. The Seder Supper and Communion will be held in the Fellowship Hall from 6-7 pm. The Christian observance of this ritual meal celebrates not only our tradition of Christ’s last supper but our common Jewish-Christian heritage. Reservations are required for this event, and tickets will be on sale soon. A nursery will be provided from 4:30-7:30 to serve both of these celebrations. Make plans to attend either the Upper Room Communion in the Sanctuary or the Seder Super. Good Friday March 25—6:00 pm This brief service helps us remember the death of Christ as we remember the last words he spoke as they are recorded in Scripture and sing songs of the Lenten and Holy Week season. The service begins in the light of day, but ends in darkness to help us understand the depth of the sacrifice and suffering of our Lord. Nursery provided. This service is relatively brief, but is a powerful preparation for the celebration of Christ’s resurrection on Sunday! Easter Sunday, March 27 Easter Sunrise Service - - 7am—Church Parlor Come informally dressed to the Church Parlor for a more casual and contemporary celebration of Christ’s Resurrection! There will not be a nursery provided for this service. Communion will be served. Easter Sunday School Celebration Breakfast -- 10:00am All Sunday school classes meet together at 10:00am in the Fellowship Hall. Enjoy a delicious breakfast as we celebrate this glorious day. Nursery provided. Worship at 9 & 11—Sanctuary Come ready to celebrate Christ’s Resurrection and to claim the promises of our faith through the celebration Of Communion! This is the day to celebrate the new life that is ours through Jesus Christ! Nursery provided. BOOK SALE RETURNS!
