She wanted to test her physical limits. She wanted to prove her doubters wrong. You might even make the insidious suggestion that she was in it for the money—out to squeeze a few more sponsorship dollars from the drying pulp of her gymnastics career. Maybe so, but what about the reverse? Isn’t it possible the sport wanted one more prime-time payday out of her? It’s certainly seemed that way this past month. Let’s wind the clock back to early June at Visa Nationals. Liukin’s results there were undeniably putrid. Both of her uneven bars routines scored under 14 points. Her beam work was a bit better, but not nearly of the caliber needed to secure a specialist spot on the U.S. team. With two weeks left before Trials, Liukin didn’t look like one of America’s top 15 female gymnasts—much less one of its top five. And yet, she was selected to compete in San Jose for an Olympic berth. Why? It could’ve been because National Team Director Martha Karolyi believed her fitness would improve or that she could add difficulty to her routine. It could’ve been because Karolyi thought Liukin’s experience would fortify her in a big meet—or perhaps even rub off on some of her younger teammates. Or it could’ve been because Nastia Liukin is a star, and her name was going to put people in the seats and keep eyes on the television. continues on page 6 >>> The Military Press July 15, 2012 Publisher Richard T. The Cleveland Cavaliers are no longer willing to be third-team facilitators for a blockbuster trade that would send Orlando Magic All-Star center Dwight Howard to the Brooklyn Nets, severely jeopardizing the Nets’ ability to acquire Howard, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. Dwight Howard has indicated the Nets are the only team he will re-sign with after the season. (Getty Images) The development has pushed the Magic to continue negotiating with several teams, especially two teams in the Western Conference: the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets. This has also been confirmed by SportsCenter via Twitter. So, after reports surfaced, stating Andrew Bynum’s refusal to sign a contract extension with the Orlando Magic, continues on page 31>>> THE first olympic games The Olympic Games were a series of athletic competitions held for representatives of various city-states of Ancient Greece held in honor of Zeus. The exact origins of the Games are shrouded in myth and legend but records indicate that they began in 776 BC in Olympia in Greece. They were celebrated until 394 AD when they were suppressed by Theodosius I as part of the campaign to impose Christianity as a state religion. The Games were usually held every four years, or olympiad, as the unit of time came to be known. During a celebration of the Games, an Olympic Truce was enacted so that athletes could travel from their countries to the Games in safety. The prizes for the victors were wreaths of laurel leaves. The Games became a political tool used by city- continues on page 6 >>> July 15, 2012 THE MILITARY PRESS 3 Commentary By Cal Thomas The ‘Oprahfication’ of America When asked at the close of the Constitutional Convention in 1787 what the Founders had wrought, Benjamin Franklin famously said, “A Republic, if you can keep it.” That question might also be put to the five Supreme Court justices who voted recently to uphold the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act, which mandates health insurance for most Americans, based on twisted logic that it is a tax and thus within the power of the Congress to impose on an already overtaxed people. Even better than the question of what the court has allowed government to do is what its ruling says about us? Rugged individualists founded and helped preserve America through many challenges. They believed we should first take care of ourselves and help our neighbors with government intervening only as a last resort. Today we are rapidly becoming a collective in which government penalizes achievement and subsidizes failure, thus producing less of the former and more of the latter. The USDA pays for the ads, which encourage more people to apply for the program. Among the avalanche of postmortems delivered by “experts” and pundits to the court ruling, one may have gotten closest to answering the question about what was in the mind of Chief Justice John Roberts and how it reflects on what our nation is becoming. Paul Rothstein, a professor at Georgetown Law School, taught Rob- erts when he was a student. In an interview with Washington, D.C., radio station WTOP, Rothstein said it was empathy for the uninsured and disdain for partisanship that swayed Roberts, making his the decisive vote. “It’s a very odd decision,” said Rothstein. “The conservative guy went liberal.” Rothstein further speculated about Roberts’ motives when he said that the chief justice’s experience with his own health issues and working in big business might have contributed to his decision. Rothstein said Roberts had good health care when he needed it and that “He was probably thinking about the millions of people who are less fortunate than he is.” Rothstein said Roberts needed to land on “the right side of history and morality” and these, too, probably influenced his vote. Notice in all of this there is nothing about the Constitution. And what’s this about morality? Whose morality would that be? Is it a fixed morality, or one based on opinion polls and wanting to land on “the right side of history,” whatever that means? Liberal justices regularly decide cases based on such non-constitutional irrelevancies. Why must a conservative? This is the “Oprahfication” of America in which feelings trump truth and personal experience and class guilt rule, not the Constitution. Oprah Winfrey, who endorsed Obama in 2008, might head a new cabinet department should Obama win a second term: the Department of Feelings. The Supreme Court didn’t worry about morality and which side of history it was on when it decided to make prayer and Bible reading illegal in public schools a half-century ago and what about the “morality” of ripping constitutional protection from unborn babies? Whose moral code decided that case? This sounds like selective morality by those academics who will write history. Such reasoning is not based on sound legal principles like the Constitution, much less a moral code created by One more “supreme” than the Supreme Court. Rothstein said, “Roberts wanted to show that the Supreme Court is more responsible to legal principles than they are to partisan principles. He has eyes on his legacy.” Again, what does this have to do with the Constitution? At future confirmation hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee, should senators ask questions about legacy, morality and history in addition to the nominee’s views of the Constitution and individual cases? If the majority on the Supreme Court is to continue with such unsound judgments, maybe we should consider changing our national anthem from “The Star Spangled Banner,” to that irritating ‘70s song “Feelings.” From Our Publisher Rome wasn’t built in a day, nor will “Rebuilding America” back to its lofty position as the number 1 nation in the world. Liukin’s “big comeback” was one of the weekend’s leading storylines. Even after Liukin struggled during Day 1—a performance that would have eliminated any other gymnast from contention—NBC’s Tim Daggett gleefully reported that she was still in the hunt for an Olympic spot according to Karolyi. Of course she was. USA Gymnastics wasn’t going to spike the story now, not when its beloved star was prepared to give one more mustsee performance. And give she did, though not nearly in the manner expected. Spurred on by the inflated possibility of an Olympic return, Liukin performed on Day 2 and fell—hard, face-first, likely causing irreparable damage to her reputation in the process. It should have never gotten that far. Liukin shouldn’t have made Trials and she shouldn’t have been convinced that she still had an outside chance at the Olympic team after her Day 1 failures. But Nastia Liukin is a proud athlete, and she was prepared to go as far as the powers that be would allow. As long as they tempted her with the possibility of an Olympic spot, she was game to give it her all. In turn, USA Gymnastics was all too eager to exploit the competitive drive that once made her great, luring her into a competition she was never fit to enter. Champions deserve better. No federal eNdorsemeNt implied 6 July 15, 2012 THE MILITARY PRESS THE first olympic games states to assert dominance over their rivals. Politicians would announce political alliances at the Games, and in times of war, priests would offer sacrifices to the gods for victory. The Games were also used to help spread Hellenistic culture throughout the Mediterranean. The Olympics also featured religious celebrations and artistic competitions. A great statue of Zeus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world was erected at Olympia to preside over the Games, though it no longer stands. Sculptors and poets would congregate each olympiad to display their works of art to would-be patrons. The ancient Olympics were rather different from the mo- dern Games. There were fewer events, and only free men who spoke Greek could compete (although a woman Bilistiche is also mentioned as a winner). As long as they met the entrance criteria, athletes from any country or citystate were allowed to participate. The Games were always held at Olympia rather than alternating to different locations as is the tradition with the modern Olympic Games. There is one major commonality between the ancient and modern Games, the victorious athletes are honored, feted, and praised. Their deeds were heralded and chronicled so that future generations could appreciate their accomplishments. Health + Fitness Five Tips for Safe Summer Sun By Kevin Ronneberg, M.D. Summer has arrived. As the weather heats up, it’s critical for beachgoers and outdoor fun-seekers to be sunsafe. This begins with choosing the right sunscreen to protect yourself from harmful UV rays. Equally important are these five simple tips from the Skin Cancer Foundation, which also will help you mitigate sun damage and reduce the risk of skin cancer. First, seek the shade. Simply minimizing exposure to UVA and UVB rays can go a long way toward protecting your skin. Taking a break from direct sun is especially important between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when rays are strongest. And remember, clouds don’t block UV rays. Infants under six months should always be kept out of the sun — protected with clothing, an umbrella or a stroller hood. Children and adults should wear protective clothing, including wide-brimmed hats and UVblocking sunglasses. Second, use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher. Regardless of the season, this kind of sun protection should be used on a daily basis. Most people understand the importance of sun safety during the summer months, but many underestimate the need for year- round protection. The temperature may drop, but UV rays remains strong. And the cooler temperatures may actually prevent people from realizing the extent of the damage the sun is doing to their skin. Third, apply 1 ounce of sunscreen to the entire body 30 minutes before going outside. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, for full SPF protection, sunscreen must be applied half an hour before sun exposure. If you are average size, you’ll need a full ounce — or about two tablespoons — to adequately cover your skin. Studies show that most people apply less than half that amount, losing the full benefit of the SPF protection. Reapplication is just as important as putting sunscreen on in the first place, as sunscreens tend to break down with exposure and can be rubbed off or washed off by sweat or water. So sunscreen should be applied every two hours, and immediately after swimming or a set of tennis. During a full day at the beach, one person should expect to use at least a quarter of an 8 oz. bottle of sunscreen. To check yourself for signs of skin damage, inspect your skin from head to toe, looking for spots or sores that heal too slowly, new growths, and any moles or beauty marks that change in color, texture, or size. And once each year, be sure to ask your physician for a skin checkup. Sunscreens are an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. They keep skin looking young and reduce the risk of many skin cancers. They must be used properly, however. These five suggestions will help keep you and your skin safe. Dr. Kevin Ronneberg is the associate medical director at Target. From Our Readers Dear Mr. Matz, I go often to the Navy Field House gym on the “dryside” of the 32nd St. Naval Base where I pick-up free copies of NAVY COMPASS, San Diego Navy/ Marine Corps DISPATCH, and MILITARY PRESS to read at home. I enjoy the publications; except for my strong personal exception to your recent personal political commentary denigrating our President and Commander in Chief.. . I do not remember having ever read any articles in any of those publications to equal the disrespect, attitude and derogatory tone of your personal commentary denigrating our Commander in Chief. James Amos, addresses many of the issues that victims and victim advocates frequently highlight — including an undue focus on victims’ personal life and command climates that foster sexual harassment and discourage reporting. It outlines a three-part campaign plan with a goal of “true zero tolerance, effective sustainment, empowered reporting, effective deterrence, engaged leadership and evolved culture.” Anu Bhagwati, a former Marine officer and current executive director of Service Women’s Action Network, said the plan shows that the Marine Corps “has finally caught up to where the Review: Change Guard, Reserve Pay WASHINGTON — America’s citizen soldiers, who train in their hometowns for a weekend a month and two weeks a year, receive more money for one day of training at home than their fellow National Guard and Reserve members earn for a day serving in the war zone. Pentagon officials defended the pay discrepancy as incentive for National Guard and reservists who give up their weekends and must be ready on a moment’s notice to serve. But it’s one of many problems in the complex Guard and Reserve compensation system detailed in a new Pentagon review that recommends changes to make the salaries and benefits more equitable across the board. Texas College Hacks Drone By Reuters/U.S. Navy There are a lot of cool things you can do with $1,000, but scientists at an Austin, Texas college have come across one that is often overlooked: for less than a grand, how’d you like to hijack a drone? A group of researchers led by Professor Todd Humphreys from the University of Texas at Austin Radionavigation Laboratory recently succeeded in raising the eyebrows of the US government. With just around $1,000 in parts, Humphreys’ team took control of an unmanned aerial vehicle owned by the college, all in front of the US Department of Homeland Security. After being challenged by his lab, the DHS dared Humphreys’ crew to hack into a drone and take command. Much to their chagrin, they did exactly that. Humphrey tells Fox News that for a few hundreds dollar his team was able to “spoof” the GPS system 14 July 15, 2012 THE MILITARY PRESS on board the drone, a technique that involves mimicking the actual signals sent to the global positioning device and then eventually tricking the target into following a new set of commands. And, for just $1,000, Humphreys says the spoofer his team assembled was the most advanced one ever built. “Spoofing a GPS receiver on a UAV is just another way of hijacking a plane,” Hum- phreys tells Fox. The real danger here, however, is that the government is currently considering plans that will allow local law enforcement agencies and other organizations from coast-to-coast to control drones of their own in America’s airspace. “In five or ten years you have 30,000 drones in the airspace,” he tells Fox News. “Each one of these could be a potential missile used against us.” Neighborhood Opposes Veterans Treatment Center A planned 40-bed treatment center for military veterans from the Gulf War has head a roadblock of opposition from neighborhood groups and a nearby school. The center’s purpose is to keep troubled vets from becoming homeless but the danger posed to children from the nearby school by veterans struggled with mental issues is a big issue to opponents. The VA has allocated $30 million for the project, starting with remodeling a former Thomas Jefferson School of Law building on San Diego Avenue in Old Town. The Old Town academy, a free charter school, is located right across the street. The center would provide treatment for veterans who do not need to be hospitalized but could benefit from rehabilitative services. The average stay would be 60 to 120 days. Six of the 40 beds would be reserved for women. Turns out the letters ILVTOFU can be construed to mean more than enjoying bean curd. “When I see T-O-F-U, I see tofu,” says Calk, who requested the so-called vanity plate from the Tennessee Department of Revenue last September. “I can’t control the way anyone else interprets that,” said Calk, 26, an animal rights activist from Murfreesboro, Tennessee. The dilemma faced by Tennessee authorities last year is not unusual, as officials at motor vehicle agencies nationwide consider hundreds of thousands of personalized plate requests each year. There are an estimated 9 million personalized license plates in the United States. The vast majority of the requests are not objectionable, but thousands provide insight not only into the 18 July 15, 2012 THE MILITARY PRESS boundaries of free speech but the amount of human ingenuity expended to display seven and eight character insults, sexual references and descriptions of bodily functions to other motorists. The battle to keep highways free of offensive phrases means state officials must track everything from Internet slang to foreign languages to commands like 3MTA3, which reveals its meaning when read backwards in a rear view mirror. Virginia may be the capital of vanity plate mischief. Personalized plates in the state cost just $10 more than regular license plates — compared with $40 in Texas and $94 in Illinois. One million of the Virginia’s 7.8 mil- lion vehicles have them. In 2009 alone, the state denied more than 700 plate requests including IHAV2P and IAMHIGH along with 100 requests beginning with the letter ‘F’ and myriad proposals involving the number ‘69,’ according to state documents. Questionable formulations are so common that a 20-person committee of motor vehicle staffers meets for an hour each month to review suspicious applications. State guidelines ban deceptive plates such as FBI or confusing configurations like O0O0O and NOTAG as well as excretory, sexual, racial or drug references. “It’s the only time you get to talk like that at DMV, that’s for sure,” said Department of Motor Vehicles spokeswoman Melanie Stokes, who sits on the review panel. Sometimes It’s Upside-Down Some slip through. Pictures have been posted on the Internet of the Virginia-issued 370H55V — which has to be read upside-down to get the full message. In Maryland, a software program checks requests against 4,331 banned license plate formulations, a list that includes WILDPIG, TOILET and GAY. State prisoners who make the plates also help out by identifying drug, gang or sexual references that slip by the computer and the civil servants, said Philip Dacey, a spokesman for the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration. “A lot of these are gray areas,” said Dacey. “TOILET is on the list and if people want to challenge it they can have a hearing.” That’s what one motorist did after Maryland revoked his MIERDA vanity plate following a complaint. Though the Spanish term would seem to embody the state’s ban on “scatological” references, an administrator is currently considering the man’s appeal that the license plate should be interpreted as a non-vulgar reference to a form of fertilizer. In Florida, the state’s motor vehicle agency takes a permissive stance towards celebrations of clothing optional bathing. O2B NUDE, BARE ALL and BE NAKED have all been deemed acceptable by the director of the agency, who nonetheless spiked 4NICK8, CAT BUTT and COW PADY, according to records released by the state. Other states are less permissive. Utah, which faced a lawsuit in the 1990s for issuing plates with the term “Redskins” because it offended Native Americans, has recently denied ‘IH8TBYU,’ ‘MNKYBUM,’ and ‘MYSHRAZ’ for being derogatory, vulgar, and an alcohol reference to a popular wine. the S:12.166” PLUS TAX WHERE APPLICABLE. Faram Navy Times The Navy has had a turbulent relationship with alcohol throughout its 236-year history. The service abolished the grog ration in 1862, but that never diminished a sailor’s desire for a drink after a long day’s work. The Navy’s rules on alcohol continue to evolve, and the latest changes are reflected in OPNAV Instruction 1700.16A, “Alcoholic Beverage Control,” dated June 7. The minor policy changes are intended to bring the instruction in line with the Navy’s existing alcohol and drug abuse instruction, which set new standards in 2009. What you need to know: Drinking Age The Navy changed the drinking age on base to 21 in 2009 when it updated its alcohol and drug abuse instruction. On June 7, the Navy updated its Alcoholic Beverage Control instruction to say the same thing. This applies to all bases in the U.S. and in countries where there is no local law setting a drinking age. If the host country has a lower drinking age, sailors at that age can drink. What Qualifies As Alcohol? The Navy defines “alcoholic beverage” as wines, distilled spirits and malt beverages such as beer. If the drink contains less than 0.5 percent alcohol by volume, it’s considered nonalcoholic. Where Can You Drink On Base? If you are in your own quarters and of legal age, you can drink. That includes Navy Gateway Inns and Suites as well as Navy Lodges. On training bases, drinking in bachelor enlisted quarters must be authorized by the chief of naval personnel. Sale or consumption of alcohol elsewhere on base is generally restricted to messes, clubs and golf course club houses, but base commanders can also authorize it at morale, welfare and recreation events. Beer can also be consumed at Navy exchanges and snack bars as well as bowling alleys. Can You Drink On Ship? It Depends. Generally the answer is no, but there are exceptions: Sherry, wine, and beer can be transported and served on naval vessels or admiral’s barges as part of diplomatic and community relations, with consumption “limited to the wardroom, flag mess, or other area designated by the CO or embarked flag officer.” At sea, beer can be served after 45 consecutive days underway without a port visit. The rules say it must come as part of a one-day stand-down in conjunction with flight deck or fantail cookouts as long as nonalcoholic drinks are available. Each sailor is limited to two 12-ounce cans or bottles. Why Is This Important? Even though the Navy’s new rules on alcohol consumption haven’t changed much, sailors should take note as the service is cracking down on bad behavior while under the influence. This year, the Navy is rolling out fleet wide use of Breathalyzers onboard ships and commands, hoping to reduce the numbers of alcohol-related incidents. Testing will be mandatory for duty sections reporting to work and random for others. Officials say it’s not a punitive measure, but they will use the tests to spot trends in individuals and provide treatment to those with problems. Back when ‘the green thing’ wasn’t an issue Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the older woman that she should bring her own shopping bags because plastic bags weren’t good for the environment. The woman apologized and explained, “We didn’t have this green thing back in my earlier days.” The cashier responded, “That’s our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations.” She was right -- our generation didn’t have the green thing in its day. Back then, we returned milk bottles, pop bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn’t have the green thing back in our day. We walked up stairs, because we didn’t have an escalator in every shop and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn’t climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. 20 July 15, 2012 THE MILITARY PRESS But she was right. We didn’t have the green thing in our day. Back then, we washed the baby’s diapers because we didn’t have the throw-away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right. We didn’t have the green thing back in our day. Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the county of Yorkshire. In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn’t have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the post, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn’t fire up an engine and burn petrol just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn’t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she’s right. We didn’t have the green thing back then. We drank water from a fountain or a tap when we were thirsty instead of demanding a plastic bottle flown in from another country. We accepted that a lot of food was seasonal and didn’t expect that to be bucked by flying it thousands of air miles around the world. We actually cooked food that didn’t come out of a packet, tin or plastic wrap and we could even wash our own vegetables and chop our own salad. But we didn’t have the green thing back then. Back then, people took the tram or a bus, and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their mothers into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a GREEN THING, Cont’d. on Page 33 OPENING JULY 28, 2012 New homes from the $170s–$190s. A real home with your own backyard! I couldn’t tell you what part of Africa my ancestors came from. So I am American, the way jazz and blues are American music. The way peach cobbler is an American dessert. But I didn’t get the big picture until I saw this country from a distance. Traveling in Europe made me understand that America has an island mentality: No one exists except us. There’s a whole other world out there, but most Americans—all they know is America, the marketing plan. When you’re in your house, you don’t know what it smells like. Your friend says, “I walked into Will’s house; it’s got this weird funky fish smell.” Then you step outside, and you say, “Wow, what are these? Daffodils?” Back in your house, you say, “Oh, it smells like fish in here.” We are living in such a great time right now. We should continue to be the light of the world. America has to be not just an idea but a living, breathing thing. We have to open the windows and let some air in. (As told to Dana White. From the May 2009 issue of O magazine.) Throughout the night he watched and looked for our great ensign still waving over Fort McHenry, which protected the city of Baltimore. When the battle was over and the flag was still there, he frantically wrote down the thoughts and feelings that ran through him. What was composed became The Star Spangled Banner. It was later adopted in 1931 as our national anthem. Francis Scott Key did what he wanted to do in his life; he served others and is known today as a true patriot. Like The Star Spangled Banner, we This month, with the celebration of the birth our nation last week, I wanted to touch on the meaning of being a true patriot and share some of the story of how Francis Scott Key had the desire to serve his country and fellowman and make a difference in this great country’s history. Francis Scott Key grew up during the beginning of this land’s story. It was when he was serving during the war of 1812, in the middle of saving a friend’s life from the hands of the enemy British, he was held on his ship to await the attack of the British By Chaplain Ringo, www.yourchappy.com honor our flag and nation with songs, salutes and celebrations. If you think about it, our flag has inspired many to accomplish so many amazing things; from those who honorably stand behind it in battle to defend the freedom it stands for, to one posting it on the dusty surface of the Moon to show how dreams can be realized. Old Glory, The Stars and Stripes, are also flown over the caskets of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve freedom. It is one of the most powerful symbols we have to inspire such devotion and feelings. Those who know me know that most of my personal belongings often display this great inspirational ensign. In fact if you have been in my offices you will find numerous flags, eagles and patriotic symbols. My vehicles fly them proudly and many of my clothes display them. It is not just a nice thing in my mind. It is truly an awe inspiring, meaningful symbol of the great blessings we all enjoy here in this “land of the free and home of the brave.” As with Francis Scott Key and all those who serve their fellowman in the military, servicemen and women are honorably giving of themselves, and willingly bearing other’s burdens. Throughout the scriptures we have been taught to do this. Actually many of us have the opportunity to do similarly for those around us and often give all we have for others. continues on page 32 >>> WE SUPPORT OUR TROOPS NO DOWN PAYMENT 3D/4D SONOGRAMS $89 See your baby like never before! By Joel C. Cordes It's the question that will be endlessly debated for the rest of the 2012 NBA offseason: Do the Los Angeles Lakers have a better starting five than the defending champion Miami Heat? The 2012 NBA free agency period has been an arms race. With the Lakers trading for Steve Nash, and Ray Allen's signing to Miami, two of the league's superpowers just got stronger. Quality teams like the San Antonio Spurs, the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Chicago Bulls have had freakishly quiet offseasons by comparison. Long-time contenders like the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks are scrambling just to keep up and to stop the bleeding, respectively. Yet every single one of those teams have clearly fallen behind the Heat and Lakers. The Heat's starting lineup was already good enough to win the championship. Now they're able to trot out Mario Chalmers, Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Shane Battier (or Udonis Haslem) while adding one of the league's best shooters to their bench. The Lakers have upgraded Ramon Sessions with Steve Nash, and they will flank him with Kobe Bryant, Metta World Peace (or Devin Ebanks), Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum. It's a paper debate for now, but the Heat and Lakers have both positioned themselves to settle this on the court when the 2013 NBA Finals roll around. Cash Quick. Clary, who qualified for his first Olympic team after finishing 1.5 seconds behind Phelps in the 200 fly, says Phelps doesn’t train hard in practice. He resents that Phelps has so much talent but doesn’t have the work ethic to go along with it. He told Jim Alexander of the Press-Enterprise: “The fact that [Phelps] doesn’t have to work as hard to get that done, it’s a real shame. I think it’s too bad. You see that all too often, where you get athletes that are incredibly talented that really take it for granted. I think the things he could have done if he’d worked as hard as I do would have been even more incredible than what he has pulled off.” Phelps has won the most gold medals in Olympic history. He surpassed Mark Spitz for most golds at a single Games. This year, he’s a lock to set the record for most medals ever won. He has 54 gold medals in international competition, will be competing in his fourth Olympics and has set world records for the better part of a decade. But, yeah, he’s left a little bit on the table. What more can he do? Set world records in events he doesn’t swim? Win medals at the Winter Olympics? Race on the moon? You can see why Clary would harbor such bitterness and jealousy of Phelps. Clary’s delusions of grandeur have turned into realities of bronze. His best international finishes -- 400 IM silver medals at the 2009 and 2011 world championships -- were made possible because Phelps chose not to swim the event. Phelps made his 400 IM return at trials and Clary was promptly booted to third place and off the Olympic team. “Basically, he was a swimmer that didn’t want to be [at practice.] They can talk about all of these goals and plans and preparation they have. I saw it. I know. It’s different. And I saw somebody that has basically been asking to get beat for the longest time.” Here’s the thing: Clary isn’t wrong. It’s no secret that Phelps made a conscious decision to take it easy after the 2009 world championships. After nine straight years of international competitive swimming, he probably needed the break. It was a recharging of the batteries. But we’re past that now. Phelps’ performance at the U.S. Olympic tri- Best of PAYMENT PROBLEMS?! It may not be enough to win seven gold medals in London, but it’s going to win him a handful of golds and get him to the podium every time he steps into the pool. These statements coming from any swimmer not named Ryan Lochte are like a chihuahua snipping at a rottweiler. Even from Lochte (who would never say such a thing, regardless of whether he believed it or not) it’d be over the top. Phelps’ results speak for themselves. He hasn’t fallen off -- not that we’ve seen. If Phelps was an example of wasted talent then he’d be ripe for criticism. As it stands now, he’s the poster child for making the most of it. Whether or not he takes every set seriously or shows up early to morning dryland is irrelevant so long as he keeps winning. So, after reports surfaced, stating Andrew Bynum’s refusal to sign a contract extension with the Orlando Magic, how can the Lakers still obtain Howard? Andrew Bynum recently tipped his hand on his preferred destinations should he not sign a max contract with Los Angeles. The Cleveland Cavaliers, Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks were the reported teams. While the absurdity of these choices remains to be another article for another day, there is one team on this list that shares common ground with the Lakers. The Rockets have been reportedly doing everything in their power to obtain Orlando’s disgruntled star. They feature a deal that includes desirable draft picks and loads of cap space they could use to absorb a bad contract or two. On the other hand, the Lakers are stuck at ground zero with Bynum unwilling to move on his “I hate Orlando” stance. This is where strategy comes in. If the Houston Rockets acquired Dwight Howard, it would almost surely be as a rental as Howard has made it clear he has no intentions of resigning with any team besides Brooklyn. While the same is true for the Lakers, they are confident that Howard would resign given their already-winning roster and ability to offer Howard a max contract deal and the spotlight he craves in Los Angeles. Would the Houston Rockets be satisfied with Andrew Bynum as a conso- lation prize? Who could not be satisfied with him? It is almost like he is too good to be considered a silver medal reward. I think it is safe to say we can award Houston with a gold medal while the Lakers would obtain a platinum medal for their efforts. And, there is no risk for Houston here. After all, Bynum clearly listed Houston as a potential destination. The Lakers are left taking all the risks. Houston would strike gold with a win-win scenario. In order for my proposed trade scenario to work, the trade that sent Ryan Anderson to the New Orleans Hornets would have to be revoked. This is possible as trades are not made official until the 11th of July. The Los Angeles Lakers would receive Dwight Howard, Ryan Anderson and Jason Richardson from the Orlando Magic. Andrew Bynum would be sent to the Houston Rockets along with Josh T:7.02” McRoberts, Steve Blake and Hedo Turkoglu. Orlando would receive Pau Gasol and Metta World Peace from Los Angeles. And, to complete the trade, Houston would send Terrence Jones, Jeremy Lamb and Royce White along with 2013 and 2015 first round draft picks. Not only does Orlando gain a cluster of young talent and draft picks, they also receive an all-star power forward in Pau Gasol while shedding two bad contracts. I think this would be a win-win for all teams involved. The Lakers would then resign Jordan Hill and Ramon Sessions to fill the void left by McRoberts and Blake. Grant Hill, who has made it abundantly clear he will not retire and is considering the Lakers, would be added to replace the loss of Metta World Peace. A story that exemplifies this is one about … Bob Butler, “who lost his legs in a 1965 land mine explosion in Vietnam. He returned home a war hero. Twenty years later, he proved once again that heroism comes from the heart. Butler was working in his garage in a small town in Arizona on a hot summer day when he heard a woman’s screams coming from a nearby house. He began rolling his wheelchair toward the house but the dense shrubbery wouldn’t allow him access to the back door. So he got out of his chair and started to crawl through the dirt and bushes. I had to get there, he says. It didn’t matter how much it hurt. When Butler arrived at the pool there was a threeyear-old girl named Stephanie Hanes lying at the bottom. She had been born without arms and had fallen in the water and couldn’t swim. Her mother stood over her baby screaming frantically. Butler dove to the bottom of the pool and brought little Stephanie up to the deck. Her face was blue; she had no pulse and was not breathing. Butler immediately went to work performing CPR to revive her while Stephanie’s mother telephoned the fire department. She was told the paramedics were already out on a call. Helplessly, she sobbed and hugged Butler’s shoulder. As Butler continued with his CPR, he calmly reassured her. Don’t worry, he said. I was her arms to get out of the pool. It’ll be okay. I am now her lungs. Together we can make it. Seconds later the little girl coughed, regained consciousness, and began to cry. As they hugged and rejoiced together, the mother asked Butler how he knew it would be okay. The truth is, I don’t know, he told her. But when my legs were blown off in the war, I was all alone in a field. No one was there to help except a little Vietnamese girl. As she struggled to drag me into her village, she whispered in broken English, “It okay. You can live. I be your legs. Together we make it.” Her kind words brought hope to my soul and I wanted to do the same for Stephanie.” We all have opportunities to assist another, to sometimes be their legs, their arms, and their friend. In a very real sense, we lay our lives down every time we put the interests and needs of another ahead of our own. As Francis Scott Key wanted to be known as a true patriot, we too can be known for our desire to serve. The quiet, non-history making service that we give to others, including those in our own family, is of great value. One day in the future, we may actually be surprised to discover how significant and heaven-like this service really is. May I encourage us all to seek for opportunities to serve our fellowman and find the joy that follows, even when you aren’t expecting it. This month, I hope you please take a moment to remember those who continue to give their all around the world and in our local areas for each of us. Enjoy this patriotic month and please be safe. As always, it is my hope that this message will help you this week to, “mount up as on eagle’s wings”, and renew a little of your strength to keep moving forward and find joy…(Isaiah 40:31) Until next time, may God bless you all and may God continue to bless our great nation… SEMPER FI Chaplain Ringo, is the CA DAV Chaplain holds a Doctorate of Philosophy in Counseling, and is a Certified Trauma Specialist. With the ‘Smart Move Advantage® program you can make the transition, just like Kevin and Terri Ball of Banning. They were among the first buyers to take advantage of the program, after just happening to stop by the LivingSmart® Homes sales office in Beaumont. “The Smart Move Advantage program seemed too good to be true,” said Kevin Ball. “But we were ready for a change and had looked at some resale homes in the area. After 20 years of living in our home we never dreamed we’d own a new home.” The Balls were able to purchase a new Plan 4 home at Living Smart® Homes Tournament Hills and are in the process of using the program to rent their current home in Banning. “The Smart Move Advantage program is excellent, making it easy for us to transition from the old home to a new home. We don’t have to worry about renting or selling it, as the program is underway and will assist us in renting our home for three years,” said Ball. In addition, Pardee Homes will open LivingSmart® Homes Parkside in late July, bringing 73 new homes, priced from the $170,000s to the $190,000s, to the area.
