From The Editor
Welcome to my final Newsletter as I will not be standing for the position of Editor at this
month’s AGM. It has been a labour of love for many years and I have appreciated the
feedback and the many kind comments from members and non-members about the
Newsletter. Many thanks also to friends and members who have made this job easier with
their contribution of articles, photos and of course in those less politically correct days the
Blonde Joke, some of which were not able to be published.
We have come a long way from the days of literal cut and paste and pre email dashes to
Andre’s Printing Service prior to the printing deadline. Those were the days. Of course
these days the vast majority of our members receive their copy electronically, in living
colour. The number of hard copies dispatched by snail mail is relatively small and likely to
be phased out before too long.
Despite the totally false rumour that I live the life of a retired gentleman, I actually do have
a job to do, albeit working for myself, who, I find, is quite a good boss. Not only that but I
do have fixed babysitting duties one day a week and of course my letter writing duties to
The Sydney Morning Herald are seemingly on the increase. The next 12 months will
involve a fair bit of travelling both local and overseas which would have made continuing in
my position difficult.
I look forward to continuing as a member of the best bird club in Australia and I’m sure a
very capable replacement will be elected at the AGM. Once again thank you to all my
friends for their support.
This month will also see our Sale night after the AGM formalities are over. Please no seed
in cages and prices must be displayed on the cage with bird description if more than one
bird in a cage. Please no more than 4 birds in a standard show cage.
Prospective purchasers will draw a number which will decide the order in which they may
choose one bird from those for sale. The next number will then choose a bird and so on
until all have chosen a bird. The order will then be reversed.
Normally we would have the final Table Show Point Scores in this Newsletter and the
presentation made at the meeting. However this has always seemed a bit rushed and not
appropriate in recognising the achievements of the winners over a full year of showing. As
a result, the Committee has decided that the September meeting will be a Presentation
Night. There will also be a BBQ on the night as a special treat following the success of last
month’s Pizza night.

HILLS 2013 SUPER BUDGERIGAR AUCTION REPORT
The Hills Branch held its annual budgerigar auction on Saturday 6 th of July at the Don
Moore Community Centre.
There were a total of 193 birds from the following breeders W Altman, J Barden, T Bevan,
C Buckingham, D & M Campbell, M Capasso, W Capper, P Dodd, M & R Fellows, C & B
Gearing, H George, M Hawke, Lloyd & Sons, I & K Manton, A Reid, J Scoble, Welshman
Family and G. Wood. Buyers from far and wide attended the day and plenty of the birds
sold went interstate.
The auctioneer was our very own Stuart Williams who auctioned 50 birds and hour. The
auction also included new technologies such as a live online feed of the auctions audio of
Stuart and still photos taken of each of the 193 birds on the day. The live feed on the
internet was being viewed by 10 or so people who were interested in the auction and a
couple of the birds were sold to them, one of which was in USA at the time. A large
monitor was also used to show the video of each bird being auctioned allowing bidders to
view the bird in a large screen format. These innovations all contributed to a very
successful auction. A very big thank you for everyone who helped.

Hills District Branch June Table Show
By Varol Tarpis
The June table show marked the end of the 2012 – 2013 table show season for the
branch. The number of birds entered was down as expected as most members were
reluctant to show their birds as it was a very busy month with the STC competition and
National selections. Members were treated to a Pizza night with Harry our Chairman
providing a selection of yummy pizza’s for the members to enjoy for the excellent results
from the STCC and National selections. The Judging was done by Craig Buckingham who
seems to be doing a lot of judging of late at various branch shows. I was invited by Craig
to help on the night to judge and it was a great learning experience. I would recommend it
to ours to consider as another rewarding aspect of the hobby.

Breeding Season Number 2 – Tarpis Family Budgerigars
My first season was 2011-2012 Gold Ring year. I had joined the Hills Branch in July 2011
and started breeding in August. I bred 130 birds in my first season with very good
Spangles and Yellowfaces amongst them. I bred these from birds I had purchased at the
Hills sales night and ones I procured from Ross Selig directly. I liked the style of Ross’s
birds and he was very helpful and I was able to buy 3 spangle cocks, a normal grey hen
and a dominant pied cock from him. I had more cock birds then hens so I also purchased
some normal and a yellowface hen from various auctions. So with 8 breeding cabinets and
less than 20 birds I started. I can tell you I was very excited and when the first eggs started
to appear then hatch in the nest boxes I was a very happy little vegemite.
The first few rounds of breeding was with unrelated birds but with some great results with
the Spangles from Ross producing better birds themselves. My very first bird a Cinnamon
Skyblue Spangle cock and the second bird a grey spangle hen won Champion Novice
Unbroken Cap and Best Opposite Sex in my very first show. One of my Yellowface hens
won Best of Variety at another show. Various spangles from the first season won
numerous best opposite sex and reserve champions and I quickly went from Novice to
intermediate with these results. One of my cock bird was so successful at shows I named
him “Blue Caviar”
My second season started in May 2013. Armed with more breeding cages, 15 in total I
started very late in the green ring season as I went on holidays with the kids and promised
my better half that I would spend more time with the kids and give the birds a good long
rest. Most of my breeding birds were in condition after their major moult. I had purchased 4
more birds from Ross late in 2012, 3 grey greens and a grey spangle, my stud was
building on Ross’s bloodlines and related to my birds I had kept. This season I was very
lucky and had plenty of good hens to choose this time around and put my best cocks and
hens in the same aviary and let them select their own mates. The ones that showed a
bonding I checked their records on their relationship to one another and the ones that were
not brother and sister and the features and variety that I wanted to breed I put down.
Most of my birds I kept are related and majority are cousins and this allowed these
pairings to be pretty straight forward. Birds that were bonding in the aviary and were too
closely related were split up for a week or so and I chose a mate for them myself.
As I am a self-confessed spangleholic my goal is to breed plenty of double factor
spangles, opaline, green and yellow face grey spangles. I know the blue and grey spangle
will no doubt be the majority of the birds bred this second season. Oh yes I also would like
some nice yellowface blues and greys and some dominant pieds would be nice.
Double Factor Whites, Blue and Grey Single Factor Spangles, Normal Grey
Nicely marked Grey Spangle – this is what I am striving for
Another nicely marked Grey Spangle still in the nest
Spangle to Spangle pairing to get some double factors – 8 fertile eggs in nest

Need larger numbers (bidders cards). Make up a set of four bidders cards to an A4 page.
Need a larger number of printed catalogues at the door. That is – print 180 catalogues next
year (to have about 60 at the front desk).
In future, we should allocate first and last couple of lots to new vendors.
We need to look at who we might invite next year
Craig needed paperwork for Interstate freighting
One bird to go interstate may not be well enough to travel
Photo stills of birds shown online, together with audio feed. Next year possibly take a photo of
every bird to be shown as slide show. Then, online bidders can have a preview – then be able
to hear the auction including terms & conditions.
Webinar worked well, but we should be ready to go fully online next year.
Power issue. Need access to the power box and be mindful of how we set up the staging
Moved that we pay Robert Mead $1583.85 for his services and costs in setting up IT, video and
sound gear.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Hills District Branch AGM 2012:
As you are probably aware I will not be standing for the position of Chairman.
Thanks to everyone that has supported me over the years. Your support has been so important to me.
We did not win The State Challenge this year, but we came close. Second ain’t to bad. We will be number
one again in 2013.
Hopefully we will have more members breeding the birds that were missing this year. Namely, Greywings,
Fallows & Clearbodies. Some members have taken up the challenge with Fallows & Clearbodies but we
really need for one or two more members to start breeding the Greywing variety, at present I think we have
only one member breeding this variety.
Once again the Hills Auction was a success & I hope it continues next year. Perhaps we need to replace some
vendors with new people.
It is the workers that make the Branch and one again I thank you & I hope that you give the new Chairman
the same support.
Peter Dodd.
Chairman.
SECRETARY:
It has been quite a difficult year for me this year, with trying to do too much, including the Society Show
Manager role.
I really would like to focus on Hills Branch in the coming year, and if nominated would accept the Secretary
position again.
We have a really great team of capable and hard-working members and I am proud to be a part of the
Branch.
Kathy Manton
Secretary
TREASURER’S REPORT for Year ended 30.06.12:
Thank you. When looking at the financials for year ended 30.6.12, I remind you that it does not include the
moneys raised at the Auction held earlier this month. The report is in a summarised format that shows at a
glance where the money has come from, where it goes and gives a good indication on how this Branch
operates.
As in previous years, the report again illustrates how financially dependent we are on our “Super Budgerigar
Auction” and the members who contributed to its success are congratulated and thanked.
Also the “Mark Chidel Sell-out Auction” contributed greatly to our overall result and we thank Mark for
choosing us to act as his Agents.
Our major expenses were:
Annual Show $ 2,814.44
(compared to 3,977.84 last year)
Social Functions i.e. Christmas Party $ 1,849.76
Newsletter
$ 589.17
($ 641.55 last year0
As at 30 June, 2012 funds held by the Branch was $18,255.25 in a cheque account at Westpac, Castle Hill
and $159.85 in Petty Cash held by myself.
This is certainly a strong financial base and would be the envy of most branches of the Society.
Should you have any questions please feel free to ask at any time.
I thank everyone for their support throughout the past year and look forward to working with you for
another twelve months if reelected.
Ian Manton
Treasurer
SHOW MANAGER: (verbal report).
Thank you to everyone who helped at the Annual Show. Hopefully we can have a few more entries next
year.
Thanks to all the guys who have helped out at Table Shows throughout the year, and for all the paperwork
they do.
Craig Buckingham
Show Manager
PUBLICITY OFFICER: – no report
EDITOR: (verbal report).
Local stories have dried up, and hope to do better with local input in the year to come. Looking for input of
photos etc. from different people that we can use.
For those who are receiving hardcopies of the Newsletter, please let Editor know if you are now on email. It
costs the Branch substantially to print and mail hardcopies - $5-$6 per issue. The fewer we need to post out,
the better it is for the Branch’s finances. If anyone has photos or articles please refer these to Santo.
(Chairman noted that a former Mid North Coast member renewed through Hills due to the great newsletter
that Santo produces).
RING REGISTER: (verbal report)
Ring sales have slowed down. If after rings for the 1st Sept issue, see Graham. Ensure any monies that may
be outstanding are paid as soon as possible. Still plenty of rings for sale.
1500 rings sold out of 2000. Perhaps send back a few 100 rings to the Society Ring Registrar.
Graeme Gordon
Ring Registrar
LIBRARIAN: (verbal report)
During last year, no books were borrowed.
Paul Brett
Librarian
WEBMASTER: (verbal report)
Thanks for the opportunity of being able to take on the webmaster position. We got though a few initial
hurdles and now have the forum up and working. Thanks to those people who are using the forum.
Hopefully we can get some new information up on the site, with more aviary visits and pics, plus other
photos and info in the year to come.
John Halas
