We are excited to launch the Breast Cancer Wellness Summit 2012: Be Fit. Be a Thriver!™
Wellness Project. It is created to support women as they move forward in their healing
experiences.
Sometimes the journey requires that we make lifestyle changes which sometimes can be
overwhelming and even daunting. The Summit will provide monthly support designed to
help make small daily changes that you desire. The online support will provide inspiration
in ways that only can be compassionately understood by those who have walked in similar
shoes.
Thriving not only can begin at diagnosis but at any time. Thriving is a shift of mindset
and personal energy. The energy of thriving helps us to heal and to move forward in our
desired directions. The word itself is a reminder that we are not a powerless victim.
Included will be discussions about core beliefs, personal toxins, mental clarity, and
changing mental thought patterns which may be holding us back, healing agendas, group
dynamics, life purpose and how to connect with the beauty of who you are.
At the BCW Summit, you will not find medicinal advice, eating plans, exercise plans or
calorie counting worksheets. Rather you will learn how to better listen to the wisdom of your
own mind, body, and spirit to guide you. Laughter, fun, beauty therapy and group dynamics
will be discussed. It is our intent you will be inspired, uplifted, and invigorated with new
healing ideas.

After breast surgery, it’s important to visit your
local mastectomy fitter to learn about postmastectomy
solutions available to you. ABC has a wide selection of bras and
breast forms that will help you regain your confidence and feel
feminine again. If you don’t know where to start, start with ABC.

Farrow Medical products empower patients to
manage their swelling themselves with easy to use compression
garments. Elastic garments are easily applied with Velcro®

fight with awkward bandaging. A wide variety of options and
sizes are available. www.farrowmedical.com
It is important that a woman be fitted by a
professional mastectomy fitter after breast
surgery. A properly fitting breast form has been designed to
mimic as closely as possible the shape, weight and denseness
of the natural breast tissue that has been lost. If not properly fit
with the appropriate style, size and weight of breast form and
mastectomy bra, a woman can suffer from “shoulder drop” as
well as neck and back problems long term. Consider visiting your
mastectomy fitter annually. www.nearlyme.com
The Center for Natural Breast Reconstruction
helps you be fit by helping you PUT CANCER AND ITS
PROBLEMS BEHIND YOU so you can once again live life to the
fullest. No worrying about potentially hard & painful implants,
just SOFT, WARM, WONDERFUL YOU, always there, helping you
look and feel your best each and every day.

Some wigs are worn for easier hairstyling for
different looks and for medical reasons. This now
allows those needing wigs for medical reasons to accept them
easier because they are making a fashion statement at the same
time as covering their hair loss needs. They can have fun, feel
more confident and hopefully turn a negative into a positive. No
one needs to have a “bad” hair day.

women feel the same as they did before their diagnosis.

I am a three time breast
cancer survivor, and was first
diagnosed at age 38 with
three children under 7. Now,
my children are ages 15, 14,
and 9 and I still find the same
sense of joy and happiness
when I look into their faces as
I did when they were babies.
It doesn’t matter that they are
now almost taller than me. I can still look into their eyes
and feel an overwhelming sense of calm. I am grateful
for every day that I’m here, spending time with my family,
being able to watch them grow and choose their path in
life. Last November, I finally made the decision to join a
personal training program in my hometown. I have been
going regularly 3 times a week. It took about 7 months, but
I finally got my excess weight off. I feel much stronger, and
my right arm is improving. I find I don’t have to wear my
sleeve or use the Flexi-Touch machine as often. My friends
and family have been telling me that I look great and asking
if I lost weight! This is such an empowering feeling for me.
I still have my low days, but most of the time, I feel good
about myself. For me, staying fit not only changed my body
and the way I feel about my body, but it also helps my mind.
I feel that when I feel good about myself, I can be a better
wife and mom.

When you thrive you have
peace and balance and still
can see
experience joy and happiness
in life, even in the worst of
situations.
A thriver is someone who
flourishes in life. Today, I am
proactive in all areas of my life,
and consistently reach out and
ask for help when needed. I make choices rather than feel
that there is no choice which includes health, relationships
and business. I integrate my values and strengths in every
day living. I recognize that all of my emotions and feelings
are important and have meaning for me, even the ones that
we “perceive” as bad. I am passionate about helping and
empowering cancer patients or anyone whose lives have
been touched by cancer. I partner with organizations who
share my mission.
My mind, my body, and my
spirit; the “trinity of wellness,”
became important not just
to me in these last seven plus
years, but to my children. My
daughters, now 19 and 20,
and my son, 18 live a life in
which they put others before
self. But they fully understand
the importance in making sure
that self can only be helpful when rested and strong and
fit; in mind, in body, and in spirit. I eat organically as often
as possible. I pray and meditate. I go for long walks on the
beach. I do yoga as often as I can. I’m a really, really good
patient. I “make my mess my message!” Everyone’s recipe
for becoming a thriver is different, and the best support we
give each other is to honor and celebrate those successes
together, cheering each other on as we becomes thrivers
and realize our goals despite or because of circumstances.

Despite the pain of my breast
cancer diagnosis and treatment, I gained valuable life
lessons. I kept a daily journal to
examine and to reflect my experience. Breast cancer brings
many intense moments and it’s
easy afterwards to forget, or
even want to forget just how
it was. But the experience is
too important to push out of the conscience. I continued to
reread the journal to make the most of what I had learned
and to go on learning.
Lesson 1: It is not my timetable. My anxiety and my worry
can not change the time table.
Lesson 2: Help comes from the unexpected sources. Although my faith has always been strong, I was startled how
prayer; both my own prayer and prayers of others carried me
though the tough days and calmed and centered me during
times when everything seemed good again. It prepared me
for the next challenge.
Lesson 3: Love comes in different forms. Love came in flowers, cards letters, emails, phone calls. Love came by poem
from a friend. Love came in tears, hugs, soft touch, gentle
words. Love came in a soft bath my husband gave when I
first arrived home in the privacy of our home.
Lesson 4. Receiving heals many: I cried in the joy of being
helped as well the uncomfortable feeling of being unable
to care for myself. I learned to listen and receive information
and insight. I learned the relief of not needing to know all
the answers.
Lesson 5:Everyday has a choice. Choosing attitude. Choosing
how to greet the day. Choosing how to view myself: victim
or survivor?
Lesson 6: Gratitude heals and motivates: New friends, new
ideas, and new opportunities fill my life. I am thankful for
the lessons I learned for know I help others by teaching,
speaking and pay home visits to newly diagnosed. I am
thankful for the journey and the new life unfolding before
me everyday.

Since my original breast cancer
diagnosis, I have been led to
do Mastermind Journaling on
a daily basis; this keeps my
mind focused on what’s most
important. It also alleviates
me from “sweating the small
stuff.” I listen to uplifting
gospel music, this is soothing
for me on many levels. I strive
to minimize stress as much as possible, at home, work,
etc... I accomplish this thru various ways; including “me
time” - spa visits for massage, shopping, or simply reading
a good book! I attend church on a regular basis; this is NOT
optional for me! I also pray without ceasing... mind/body/
soul medicine “free of charge” from the Great Physician! I
am more conscious about my food choices; staying away
from fatty foods, over-indulgence in sweets, making sure to
drink plenty of water daily. I consider each day a “gift” and
I cherish every moment!! I love spending quality time with
my wonderful husband James, a man of God, as well as my
13 year old son, James who I truly adore. Together... we
laugh a lot and enjoy dinner and movie outings as much as
possible. I also talk with my sister by phone at least once a
week, often times more than that, since we have so much
distance between us, but so much in common!

Although I had many questions, fears and concerns for
my daughters during my
illness, because of them my
heart began to sing. I will
forever remember the moment
I sat on the couch staring out
the window watching Macayla
running outside, chasing butterflies, laughing and smiling
with her cousins. The words began to pour out of my mouth
as I began to write a song called, My Butterfly. For at that
moment my daughter was flying for me, unaware and alive,
she flew for me. Over and over as I began to sing the song I
began to feel like I was in a cocoon and I began to see myself
emerging and soon flying. I was fitting myself for song. Another song I wrote and lived, Keep Moving Forward, speaks
volumes about not looking back but heading towards light
and life. I have confidence as I have never had before, and
am sure I empowered to bring joy and life to others.
Gina Cook, Singer • Atlanta GA • [email protected]
A thriver does not wallow in self
pity, but rather takes control
and is empowered to focus on
living, not just existing, and not
dying. A thriver learns and grows
from the cancer experience; she
takes something from the breast
cancer experience and empowers
herself to turn a negative into a
positive. She realizes that cancer
is a wake-up call that all is not well inside the mind and body;
that the body is screaming for help. She learns to embrace life,
love life and to live life. She is empowered to heal body and
soul and to find a new path in life. When I took what I thought
was a short sabbatical from my job to enjoy my babies, I began
to realize that my life lacked purpose, yet I felt paralyzed to
make changes. Having cancer opened the door to a new life
and allowed me to make some much needed changes. I love
my children, and enjoy my time with them, but I realized I
needed to take care of me, to attend to my needs. Just like in
an airplane when they tell you to put your mask on first, in life,
you cannot attend to others if you do not take care of yourself. I
have learned to put me first, to do things that make me happy,
and to savor and nurture all that life has given me. I was a high
stress person who ate pretty well. Relentless, unaddressed stress
and a nutrient deficient diet are cancer supportive. I reflected
on my life, what went wrong and what I could change. While I
still do not meditate, I transcend myself into a state of complete
relaxation by zoning out on the couch, blocking all busy
thoughts, listening to music. I lie prone on the couch, knees supported and before you know it, I can’t get up; I am in a state of
bliss and total relaxation. My boys come in and say “oh, sshhhh,
mommy is doing her thing”. They know that if I am relaxed,
they will have my complete attention and love when I emerge.
Eating well is a loose term, widely interpreted. To some, it
might mean that they eat a few vegetables every day; to some
it might mean choosing pasta over meat, to others it means
being vegan. In my case, I needed to redefine and embrace
healthy eating. I now eat a mostly plant based diet and avoid
sugars and refined grains. I have also learned to avoid difficult
people and situations. I will not allow others to steal my energy
or impose their negative energy on me. I adore my father, but
now when he speaks negatively of the stock market, politicians,
etc., I politely remind him that I do not choose to wallow in what
I cannot change or influence, but rather to distance myself from
negative conversation. Taking action is one thing, wallowing in
the negative is unhealthy. I also came to realize that my former
career did not satisfy my inner passions. I always felt I was
meant to do more, to help others. I began coaching women and
empowering them to take control of their cancer and treatment,
to get past their cancer and into a life of wellness. Today I feel
my life is complete. I have never felt healthier in my life. I have a
wonderful and supportive family who understands I have needs
too, and I have purpose and meaning to my life. I am a thriver.

Real Purity was a dream then became a reality of
Virginia Easterling in the mid 1980’s. Being a well known &
respected aesthetician she grew tired of using skin care and
cosmetic’s with synthetic & chemical ingredients. Many times
she would use herbs from her own garden to concoct masques
or treatments for her clients. The dream still remains, making
products that benefit and not harm us or Mother Nature. Since
then, a whole new world of pure raw materials is available to our
labs so we can offer even better and more effective products.

A Board Certified Mastectomy Fitter is important, as
they have been trained and educated as to the fitting needs of a
woman both pre- and post-mastectomy. A Certified Mastectomy
Fitter’s special training assists women in making the transition
from diagnosis, to patient, to Thriver. The Fitter is able to identify
needs and make certain that the products that she introduces
are specific to those needs. Be as choosy about your mastectomy

Integrative Medicine
According to the Merriam-Webster definition, the word integrate means
to ‘form or blend into a unified whole’. Now more than ever, hospitals and
medical care teams are practicing methods that blend traditional medicinal
standards with what has been termed as nontraditional treatments.
Breast Cancer Wellness Magazine invited
five leading cancer treatment centers in the
United States to share with our readers more
information about integrative medicine and
what they offer the communities they serve.
Today the term integrative medicine
includes the practices and standards of whole
body care with a collaborative focus on mindbody-spirit empowerment.
Patients are usually most interested in
evidence-based research and the highest
standards of practice when seeking healing
methods outside of traditional medicine.
New terms for new methods for mindbody medicine continue to appear regularly.
It is advisable to have the practitioner to explain the procedures and to do your research
as well as asking for referrals. A qualified and
experienced practitioner will understand that
you may have concerns about treatments, and
will patiently answer your questions about
what to expect from the different services.
Not all integrative and complementary
therapies are included in insurance contracts.
There are many qualified integrative
cancer centers across the country. Some are
associated with traditional cancer centers or
university hospitals and others are independently owned centers. BCW does not endorse
one facility or procedure over another.
Thank you to each of the following physicians for taking not only the time to answer
our questions, but also for their steadfast
efforts in the cancer equation.

outcomes. Our services are based on the latest
research that demonstrates the proven effects
of a multi-disciplinary approach to cancer
treatment and chemotherapy and the powerful connection between body and mind:
n Complementary therapies, used as
adjuncts to mainstream cancer care, are
supportive measures that help control
side effects, enhance well-being, and
improve immune function.1
n Mind-body techniques—meditation, hypnosis, relaxation techniques, cognitivebehavior therapy, guided imagery—can
reduce anxiety, depression, chronic pain,
and mood swings in cancer patients and
can enhance their coping skills. 2
n Acupuncture and acupressure help
decrease nausea and vomiting sometimes
associated with chemotherapy.3
n Herbs and other dietary supplements can
enhance immune function and can prove
useful in prevention and management of
cancer.4
n For cancer patients, massage therapy has
been recommended as part of a multipleapproach to treatment to reduce pain
and anxiety.5

In coordination with our patient’s oncologist and other care providers, we work to
help manage the most common side effects of
cancer treatment. We help our patients learn
how stress reduction techniques—meditation, guided imagery, hypnosis—can reduce
pain and anxiety, and can enhance the effects
of treatment; how acupuncture can alleviate

side effects of conventional treatment and of
cancer itself (nausea, pain, tissue inflammation, fatigue, etc); how massage can reduce
swelling, pain, and anxiety, and much more;
and how nutrition can support immune system to ensure vitality during and well beyond
treatment.
Currently, patients at Duke Integrative
Medicine may choose from a wide variety
of services to support them through their
cancer treatment including integrative
medicine physician consultations, acupuncture sessions, massage therapy, nutrition
consultations, individual yoga instruction
and personalized mind-body session (guided
imagery, hypnosis—with a personalized CD
for your ongoing use—or relaxation training). Our plans for the future include a robust
partnership with our colleagues at the Duke
Cancer Institute so that we can provide both
in-patient and treatment room services,
classes, and programs.

the care of each patient. Gaining mutual trust
and respect among healthcare professionals
enhances the care of those who are chronically ill, but often requires learning more
about the unique training and skills each type
of provider possesses. It is also important to
routinely examine the published evidence
and appreciate what research is still required
when evaluating the potential efficacy of any
therapy. Several of our practitioners teach
at the master’s or graduate level, or have
partnered with academic faculty in clinical
research studies that employ their skills. In
2011, JHIMDC hosted a symposium on the
Integrative Medicine Approach to Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), to bring together
the perspectives of experts from diverse
disciplines. Many healthcare providers, and
patients, for the first time were exposed to the
full array of evidence-based approaches that
currently exist to address the nutrition, physical, and psychosocial needs of those with IBD.
Since its inception in September 2008,
JHIMDC has expanded its staff and programs
to include cancer support services for patients,
survivors and caregivers. Through the Road to

and massage therapy is offered routinely to
patients and caregivers who visit the Sidney
Kimmel Cancer Center infusion center;
acupuncture and massage therapy are also
available to inpatients when requested.
While fully embracing the Johns Hopkins
Medical Institution’s rich history of medical research and commitment to the highest

CANCER TREATMENT CENTERS
OF AMERICA
by Theodore Pollock, DO, FACOI
Cancer Treatment Centers of America
(CTCA) provides a model in health care that
combines cutting-edge conventional treatments, such as chemotherapy, radiation and
surgery with scientifically supported integrative services. For almost 30 years, CTCA
has focused on treating the whole-person to
help patients fight their cancer from as many
directions as possible. CTCA believes that
integrative medicine can help keep patients
strong, so that they’re better able to tolerate
the side effects of their treatments. Below
are some integrative services that the center
offers.
Naturopathic Medicine
Naturopathic medicine makes use of
natural methods to strengthen the body’s
ability to heal itself. It focuses on creating a
healthy environment both inside and outside
the body. Naturopathic doctors (NDs) use
techniques such as supplements, homeopathic medicine, hydrotherapy, acupuncture and
the low level energy laser to help keep cancer
side effects at bay. As NDs are not licensed to
practice in every state, it is imperative that
you check your ND’s credentials prior to seeing one.
Nutrition
Maintaining optimal nutrition is essential
to keep you strong, enable you to tolerate
your cancer treatment and help you recuperate faster after treatment. During this time,
your body needs more “fuel” than normal in
order to repair the effects of cancer treatment. Dietitians work in conjunction with

Theodore Pollock, DO, FACOI, is the director of
medical oncology for the Tulsa CTCA hospital and
brings more than 30 years of oncology experience
with him to that role. He has been with CTCA for
more than three years and in that time has fully
embraced the center’s multidisciplinary approach
and focus on patient empowerment.
With cancer mortality changing minimally over the past several decades, it has been
clear for some time that a fresh approach
to the war on cancer is needed. Along with
our clinical and research staff, I have spent
over 30 years at the Block Center evolving an
individualized, integrative treatment model
to address the multiple concerns and complex
biology cancer patients face.
Approaching patients with solo therapies,
such as pharmaceuticals - while essential - is
simply not enough. That is why I have developed a multidimensional and multi-targeted
model of care, individualized to each patient’s
needs, their tumor’s unique molecular
features, as well as the physiological environment that the cancer cells reside within.
Fundamental to my treatment approach are
four cornerstone aspects of care: a thorough
medical workup, a select set of integrative
assessments, the development of a strategic,
personalized treatment plan and hands-on
training for my patients. A new breast cancer patient first coming
to the Block Center will start with a thorough
medical workup. Included in this initial exam
may be a Chemosensitivity Tissue Profile,
which can help with selecting the appropriate
chemotherapy agents for a patient. We also offer innovative molecular tumor tissue testing,
which provides an overall prognostic portrait
of a patient’s tumor. In addition, we do a Nutraceutical - Drug Coupling Profile, matching
nutraceutials to chemotherapy drugs for the
purpose of diminishing toxicity, reducing drug
resistance, improving tolerance, and enhancing conventional treatment efficacy.

A key component of our integrative assessment is testing the cancer “terrain” or internal
biochemical environment, as discussed in my
book Life Over Cancer. Tests of biomarkers
tell us whether your terrain either promotes
the growth of cancer cells or helps thwart
their progression. For instance, an important
biochemical factor in breast cancer is the
glucose-insulin axis. Research demonstrates
that abnormalities in this axis can potentially
double recurrence and triple mortality! Results of terrain testing allow us to prescribe the
best-suited nutritional, lifestyle and nutraceutical strategies for each patient.
Throughout the years, we have found
that lifestyle information without hands-on
training causes patients unnecessary angst
and frustration. Our patients work individually with our dietitians, physical therapist and
counseling staff towards adopting a healthful,
phytochemically-rich diet, daily physical activity, and strategies for stress care. Daily cooking
classes, individual instruction in various exercise modalities and training in deep relaxation,
improving circadian rhythms, and fostering
engagement with life are also provided.
The true promise of integrative cancer
care is realized when all of the needs of the
patient are addressed, and treatment protocols are individualized to these unique needs.
This is what patients at the Block Center
experience every day.

MAYO CLINIC’S COMPLEMENTARY
AND INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE
by Brent A. Bauer M.D.
Mayo Clinic’s Complementary and
Integrative Medicine program was created
to address growing patient interest in
wellness-promoting treatments that are not
typically part of conventional medical care.
Therapeutic interventions such as stress
management techniques, resilience training,
massage therapy and acupuncture are
readily available to our patients to augment
their ability to adapt well and recover
quickly after stress, adversity, physical
trauma or tragedy.
Created in 2001, the Complementary
and Integrative Medicine Program is a
collaborative approach involving every
Department and specialty at Mayo Clinic.
Each year, more than 8,000 patients receive
massage therapy (both in the hospital and in
the outpatient setting), 10,000 acupuncture
treatments are delivered, and over 1500
one-on-one patient/physician consultations
are provided to patients seeking to enhance
their wellness. Classes are provided to
small groups as well as national audiences,
reflecting the focus on education as a key
part of an overall wellness promoting
strategy. Finally, research into the efficacy
of various therapies is also a major focus
of the program, leading to substantial
practice changes across the institution (e.g.
small but positive studies on the efficacy of
massage in the post-operative period led to
incorporation of massage therapy as part of
the routine care of patients receiving surgery
at Mayo Clinic).
The Complementary and Integrative
Medicine cares for patients with a wide
range of diagnoses, but by far the most
common one is cancer. And of those
patients diagnosed with cancer, by far the
most common is breast cancer. Typically,
patients who have experienced breast
cancer and are referred to the CIM Program
will meet with a physician who explores
goals and helps create a wellness strategy.
This typically involves some mind-body
training (e.g. meditation) but can range
from tai chi or yoga to biofeedback-assisted
stress management tools. Many patients
will also find benefit from acupuncture,
again, depending on current symptoms
16

or concerns. And most patients also find
massage to be an effective component of
the overall approach to enhancing wellness,
regardless of the diagnosis or prognosis.
Nurse-led stress management training,
animal-assisted therapy and hypnotherapy
are just a few of the other modalities that are
included in the Program offerings.
All recommendations provided by
CIM staff are discussed in detail with the
referring physician – so that the oncologist,
patient and integrative medicine provider
are all on the same page and working
collaboratively. This allows the patient
to integrate the best of both worlds –
complementary and conventional – yielding
optimal healing for each individual.

worlds together – for the
benefit of the individual
– is a wonderful way to
practice medicine” —

Nourish
THE MEDICINE OF
MOVEMENT: EXERCISE
LOWERS YOUR RISK
by Christine Horner, MD
The right type of activity, at the proper time of the day, produces a
cascade of powerful chemicals and hormones that decrease the risk of
a multitude of disorders, especially breast cancer. For instance, engaging
in activities that elevate your heart rate on a regular basis lowers your risk of
breast cancer in eight major ways.
First, exercise activity lowers the production of estrogen in your body. Breast cancer
is strongly linked to estrogen. The more
estrogen your body produces and that you
are exposed to from other sources over your
lifetime, the higher your risk of breast cancer.
Second, regular vigorous activities have
been found to lengthen the menstrual cycle.
With each menstrual period, your body
produces a surge of estradiol – the strongest
type of estrogen and the one most linked to
breast cancer. The longer your menstrual
cycles are—for example, they occur every
30 days instead of every 28 days—the fewer
the number of menstrual periods you will
have over your lifetime. The fewer menstrual
cycles you have, the lower the amount of
18
Breast Cancer Wellness Magazine | Be a Thriver!®
estrodiol you will produce, and the lower
you risk of breast cancer will be.
Third, when you exercise in the proper
amounts, the strength of your immune
system is boosted. On the other hand, exercising too little, or too much, weakens your
immune defenses. Keeping your immune
system strong is important because it is
composed of cells that provide your body’s
main defense against foreign invaders like
bacteria, viruses and cancer cells. A robust
immune system is crucial for preventing and
fighting breast cancer.
Fourth, aerobic exercise regulates blood
sugar. Sugar is the preferred food for cancer,
so it is best not to eat very much of it. Another important reason to keep your blood
sugar from getting too high has to do with
the hormone insulin. When you eat sugar, especially simple or refined sugars, your blood
sugar zooms up and your pancreas responds
by releasing a lot of insulin – the hormone
that facilitates sugar getting into your cells.
Insulin can cause big problems when it comes
to your risk of breast cancer. Women with
the highest insulin levels are found to have a
283% increased risk of breast cancer. Insulin
is also dangerous for women with breast cancer. Breast cancer cells have insulin receptors
on them, and when insulin attaches to them,
it makes the cancer cells grow faster.
From Rene M. Caisse, RN
Fifth, aerobic exercise lowers blood fat and keeps body fat in check.
Obesity is thought to cause about 20-30% of all post-menopausal breast
cancers.
After menopause, your fat cells are the primary site for estrogen
production in your body. The more fat cells you have, the more estrogen
your body will produce. So keeping your body weight down is a good way
to lower your risk of breast cancer.
Sixth, exercise relieves depression. According to researchers at the
University of Pennsylvania, women who are depressed have a 400%
higher incidence of breast cancer. When you engage in strenuous physical activity, your body releases endorphins and other powerful moodboosting hormones. These chemical changes are extremely effective at
relieving depression. In fact, several studies show that exercise works just
as well at improving this condition as most commonly prescribed antidepressant medications.
Seventh, exercising releases stress. Stress has been linked to 90% of
all illness according to the National Institute of Health. Research shows
that women under severe stress, or that have recently suffered a major
stress, like death of a loved one, or loss of a job, are much more prone to
developing breast cancer.
Finally, regular exercise has been found to lower IGF-1 or insulinlike growth factor. Keeping the amount that our body produces of this
naturally occurring growth factor low is crucially important, because it is
the most powerful stimulator of breast cancer known. It is also imperative
to be aware that excess amounts of this dangerous growth factor can get
into our bodies from consuming dairy products from cows that have been
injected with growth hormones. Since most of the cows on conventional
American farms are given growth hormones, the only way to avoid ingesting dangerous amounts of IGF-1 is to either not eat dairy products, or to
consume only those that are low-fat and have been organically produced.
All of these breast cancer risk-lowering benefits of exercise add up to
a lot of protection. Research shows that if you exercised regularly during your teen years, your risk of breast cancer will be 30% lower for the
rest of your life. But it is never too late to begin exercising. If you start
regularly participating in invigorating movements as an adult and keep it
up, you can drop your risk of breast cancer by 30-50%. If you have breast
cancer and exercise while under going treatment, a study published in the
Journal of the American Medical Association in May 2005 found that your
chances of surviving are twice as high. Just walking briskly for an average
of three to five hours a week makes a significant difference. n

created just for Young Thrivers!™
Heather Jose, a 13 year thriver of
stage IV breast cancer, diagnosed
at age 26, originally had a prognosis of six months to live by her
original doctor, so she immediately changed doctors and found
someone who believed in taking
a proactive approach to her healing possibilities. Joining Heather

Young Thrivers!™ will discuss
mortality, fertility, family, intimacy issues, education resources
for wellness, and the emotional
elephant-in-the-room-issues that
have to be discussed. Their objective is to keep the connection
strong among other breast cancer

W
e have long been called a ‘so-so’ generation. We have been told we will be the
first generation that will not pass their
parents in terms of wealth and status,
that we lack direction and that we expect
everything to be given to us without earning it. We are a generation that will likely contribute to social security and yet not
draw from it. We hear loud and clear that our future is on our
shoulders and that we aren’t going to handle it very well.
While parts of these statements may be true, I also
believe that we are a generation who refuses to live within
the rules that have been set for us. We have fought to
improve working situations so that we can be home more,
stressed less and happier overall. We have chosen to change
the things that we can control and let the rest go. We have
embraced diversity. We have also learned that we can begin
a movement toward change with relative ease when we put
our passion into action.
Bev Vote has passion for our generation. She herself was
diagnosed at the age of 38. She understands all too well the way that breast cancer impacts a woman’s life
just as they are hitting their stride.
We have heard all of the slogans that are out there, and frankly I like a lot of them. I want to livestrong. I
believe I do stand up to cancer. But I am not talking about mere words which people can wear on their wrist
anymore. It is time to be heard. It is time for us to use our energy and passion to end breast cancer. Intuitively, we have the answers. It is within us to start a movement which puts health above dollars, and in doing
so we will actually save money in the long run. We also know that if we join forces we can make a difference.
Young Thrivers™ is an opportunity for change on an individual and sociological level. We want women
to take this journey with us to learn more about themselves and to ultimately change the world. We are not
looking for perfect women, we are looking for passionate ones. We are wanting women who want to embrace
life rather than cancer. Women who get up each morning knowing that they impact the world in which they
live.
If you were to ask me why I am passionate about this, I would tell you this: I want to be able to say that I
HAD cancer and I want my 14 year old daughter to live a life free of this disease. I also want to know that the
things that I have endured and the lessons that I have learned are not in vain. It is so empowering to think
that I have the opportunity to make a change in our world for the better. I have passion and determination
and a fair amount of tenacity that I believe was given to me for a reason. There is a better life out there for
women, and we are the ones to demand it in a way that is thoughtfully heard and by people who are learning
to thrive with or without cancer.
Cancer doesn’t define me. Though it has certainly changed almost every area of my life, I wouldn’t list it
in the top things if I met you on the street. However, it is because of my journey with cancer I have learned
valuable lessons and made choices that promote health and wellness. I deliberately choose not to be angry or
victimized. I don’t want to live in a pink world and celebrate the sisterhood. I want to help women thrive, to
move on from the cancer and pursue that which they were called to do.
If a ticked off 28 year old can get Bank of America to rescind their fee policy, imagine what a united
group of young thrivers could do to be heard in the medical community. The world is ready for this. Now
more than ever. We do not need to keep dying from this disease. Come thrive with us.

young breast cancer patients, my
message would be to live their lives
to the fullest each and every day.
My biggest obstacle in facing this
disease was that I was diagnosed as a stage I
in 2006, just six months after my first child
Theodore was born. My treatment choices
included double mastectomy, oophorectomy
and four rounds of chemotherapy. Four
years, ten months later the cancer returned
aggressively at stage IV. I am in the small
minority of women who get breast cancer
without breasts and of course, it came as
quite a shock. I want to help educate other
women who have been diagnosed with
breast cancer.

February 28, 2006,
two thoughts came to
mind immediately – my
then 3-year old daughter, Noelle and that
I did not want to die. I was terrified of the
future and I felt like a prisoner in my own
body and in my life. What I have come to
learn over the past 5 years is that breast
cancer doesn’t have to be the end of the
road, but the beginning of a wonderful new
journey. Through my breast cancer experience, I learned that I was more beautiful,
stronger and more powerful than I could
have ever imagine. Where I once guessed,
I now knew, where I before took tentative
steps, I now walk steady, and whence I once
merely existed, I now live. I AM ALIVE and
I thrive, every day. This is what I want for
all of you, my fellow thrivers, to open your

beautiful can come from the challenge that
you’re living with right now. I’m looking
forward to loving, living and learning along
with you.

“You have breast cancer...”
Life-altering words women hope and often think they will never hear—especially at a
young age. When a young woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, she can feel isolated and alone. Her psychosocial and medical issues are
fundamentally different than those of older, post-menopausal women, as is the impact of her diagnosis on her family and friends. With the
bulk of medical and psychological resources designed for women over 50, a younger woman may not know where to turn. More aggressive
cancers, fertility, relationship issues, treatment-induced early menopause, living decades with this serious diagnosis—these are just a few
ways a younger woman’s breast cancer experience can be unique. To address these issues, Living Beyond Breast Cancer and Young Survival
Coalition have created C4YW—an annual conference for young women affected by breast cancer and those who support them.

Cancer’s ne west way to g e t fit!
by Christine K. Clifford, CSP
Knowing that Breast Cancer Wellness Magazine is aiding women now
more than ever to Be Fit, Be a Thriver!™, I immediately thought about
sharing with readers the healing power of laughter. Many may not realize,
but laughing out loud takes work and a lot of physical exercise!
Your breathing level changes; blood
flow changes; muscle tension is reduced.
Stress goes down. Physicians such as Lee
Berk, M.D., O. Carl Simonton, M.D., and
Patch Adams have proven that laughter
can provide physiological benefits, such as
increasing natural killer cell activity, which
is the body’s natural fighter for viruses
and tumors; increasing T-cell activity; and
reducing cortisone levels which tend to suppress the immune system.
But not convinced that you can get your
daily dose of exercise along the way? Read

Warning: Humor May Be Hazardous to
Your Illness!
Dear Cancer Club,
When I went for my first chemo treatment, I had to fill out a health questionnaire
about pre-existing problems, such as heart
disease, kidney disease, lung disease and so
on. After completing the form, the nurse said
to the other staff nurses, “Look at this: nothing checked. She is the healthiest person with
cancer we’ve had in a long time!”
Made me feel good. NOT!
I had to cross a parking lot during a
wind storm, and I was concerned about my
wig staying on. It did stay on, but I told my
friend Chris how upset I would have been if
it flew off in front of my co-workers.
Chris suggested I should run after it,
yelling, “Fluffy! Get back here! Bad dog!”She
made me laugh. So now my wig’s name is
Fluffy. I will tell my husband that tonight
Fluffy is getting a bath.

Dear Cancer Club,
I am a double cancer survivor: first colon,
then breast, now eight years behind me. I
was visiting my daughter in Florida. While
there, we were working in her yard: planting,
digging up weeds, and so forth. I was wearing a camp shirt that buttoned down the
front, and a “cool” bra with my prosthesis. I
had worn it before without any problems. It
doesn’t have prosthesis pockets, but I do have
pocket bras that I wear most of the time.
I was weeding around the stone walkway
and came upon a weed that was connected to
lots of off-shoots. I got a little too rambunctious, trying to pull the entire weed, when
my prosthesis fell out on the sidewalk with
a plop. I looked around and reached down,
wiped my “boob” off very carefully and
replaced it in the pocketless bra. I heard the
snickers, but very nonchalantly went about
my weeding chore.
My daughter just about lost it when
she realized what I had just done! We had
some good laughs about it later. We need
good laughter and serious hugs during our
recovery.

Dear Cancer Club,
About four months after my
surgery, I attended a support group meeting
where they displayed prostheses. One woman
spoke up and said she simply used a shoulder
pad in her bra and that helped a lot. I liked
that idea.
The following Saturday night I was invited to a friend’s house and thought this would
be the perfect time to try the shoulder pad. We
played board games, watched a movie, and
then moved to the table to play cards. On his
way over to the table, Jim leaned over to the
floor and said, “Did someone lose a shoulder
pad?” I was laughing so hard that I had to tell
them where it came from. Now I use safety pins.

you get past the unpleasant, manage the

Humor is a perpetual event. It is a way of
looking at things. No two people see things
the same way, so there is a wide range of
what can be defined as humorous. Men’s
perceptions of what is funny tend to be different than women’s.
With regard to illness, humor is the
ability to perceive and find something funny
in the face of adversity. Sometimes, humor
provides us with a way to distance ourselves
just enough from a troublesome experience
to be able to tolerate it.
Laughter is a behavioral event. It is a
physical response to humor that can engage
the entire body and involve most of the
major muscle groups. The extent to which
your body changes is related, in part, to how
comfortable you feel with losing control.
When you first recognize that something is
funny, your breathing pattern changes, then
you develop a smirk which turns into a smile
and is followed by a grin. Next, you begin
to make noises, ranging from controlled
snickers, escaped chortles and giggles to
cackles, hoots, and guffaws. As the noise
grows louder, you may begin to sway back
and forth, slap your knees, stomp your feet
or jab your elbow into someone nearby. As
your laughter peaks, tears may begin to flow
freely. When you are finished laughing, you
may feel weak and exhausted for a while.
Laughter serves as a safety valve to release
worries, relax, and let go.
So next time you’re sitting in your chemo
chair, lying on the radiation therapy table, or
just getting ready to take a nap, don’t forget
to laugh!™ It’s good for your health! n

The Ultimate Food Fight
I was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer in 2007. At that time, I lived in
San Diego with my 8-year-old daughter, and I was in a serious relationship. I
had just started my doctorate degree in Health Psychology (talk about irony!).
In short, I had a lot of living to do—and I intended to fight back and thrive.
I had been learning quite a bit in my doctorate program about nutrition’s affect on
mind, body, and spirit—and I was a healthy
eater overall. But I’ve never been one to kid
myself that I know it all! I did not want to
be a passive victim to breast cancer, so I
decided to learn some ways to kick things up
a notch nutritionally. My plan was to attack
my cancer through food.
My first source of information and
inspiration was my friend, Cindy. At that
time, Cindy was a 3-year thriver of stage 4
lung cancer… despite the fact that she had
been given zero-to-1 month to live. I figured
if Cindy was beating the odds, she must be
30

doing something right! So we had a long
talk about food. She encouraged me to start
juicing daily, and also to eat more fresh vegetables and fruits. She also recommended
that I start reading labels very carefully.
The very next time I went grocery shopping, I began to empower myself by reading
those labels. And I learned something very
important—just because something has
a ‘natural’ or ‘organic’ label on it does not
mean that it’s completely healthy. Many
‘organic’ or ‘natural’ products may have
added sugar, or even some fillers that are
completely unnecessary for the body.
For example, dried apricots are not nec-
by Lisa Grey
essarily a good thing. Apricots are fantastic
for your health—but many dried fruits
have sulfur dioxide added to them to keep
their colors bright. Is it ‘technically’ safe to
eat sulfur dioxide? Well, if by ‘technically’,
you mean the government has approved it,
then… yes. But, if your internal organs could
talk, they would much rather that you eat
dried apricots without any junky stuff added.
Also, store-bought cereals and cereal bars
often contain high amounts of sugars. It may
be cane sugar or brown sugar—but please
note, those are still just ‘sugar’ to your body
once they’re inside of you!
And speaking of sugar, I realized that an
alarming amount of prepared foods contain
sugar—including soups, spaghetti sauce, and
‘healthy’ chips and pretzels. Who knew?
This drove the point home—if I wanted
to fight my cancer with nutrition, then I
had to have some control over what went
into my body. And if I wanted some control
over what went into my body, then I needed
to prepare my own fresh foods at home. In
theory, that was great. But there was just one
huge problem—how?
Let me explain… I already knew how to
cook—I’d gone to culinary high school, and
I’d been an avid foodie for years. But cancer
treatments were draining me of all my energy, time, and money.
One day during treatment, I stared at
the onion on my cutting board. But just
the thought of chopping that onion left me
wanting a nap. And that’s when it really hit
me: Other survivors feel the same way.
After talking to many survivor sisters
(and brothers)—in a nutshell, that is why
they do not make the switch to healthy cooking and eating. The reality is—after cancer
treatment we are all expected to go back to
the daily grind—work, school, parenting, relationships. But our reality is - we are physically, emotionally, and spiritually drained
from our cancer. Why on earth would we
want to add anything to our schedule that
takes more time, energy, or money?
And so, that very day in my kitchen as
I stared with dread at that onion, I made a
vow. I vowed that when my treatment was
done, I would do everything in my power to
come to the rescue of my fellow survivors.
Rescue? Yes. Because let’s be honest, none
of us is brave all the time, nor should we
be. There is a time to be strong and power
through things—and a time to let others
help you to power through. We were not
meant to walk (or crawl) alone in this world,
whether it be through cancer or any other
hurdle.
My heart was full with the longing to
help as many people as I could
to eat healthy, and to keep it as
simple and cost-effective as I
could. I wanted to make just one
thing a bit easier on their list of
Conquering-The-Daily-Grind-After-Cancer. And I wanted them
to thrive while doing it. I wanted
to empower them not just to
avoid cancer, but to sleep well…
gain energy… look better… but
most of all, feel better.
And so, when I finished my
treatment, I started to blog for all my survivor sisters and brothers. I called the blog
Pink Kitchen. I figured if I could help just a
few people to see that healthy eating did not
have to be tricky, expensive, or bland—then
the blog would be worth it. I also added
some nutrition information that survivors
could relate to their specific needs—foods
to help during radiation, foods to help with
chemo-brain, cancer-battling foods, and—
occasionally—even foods to help survivors to
feel sexy again. (Well, why not? If we must
jump back into The-Daily-Grind-AfterCancer, then we should be able to enjoy
The-Perks-in-Life-Before-Cancer!)
Never in my wildest dreams did I expect
the response that I got to Pink Kitchen!
The emails came flooding in—not just from
breast cancer survivors, but from people of
all walks of life.
People with other diseases, inspired by
the concept of fighting back with food.
People who wanted to learn how to cook
health foods.
People who wanted to prevent cancer
from entering their lives in the first place.
I was so touched by all of the people out

there who were just waiting for someone
to encourage them that they could do it…
someone who cared that they were already
tired, broke, or even unmotivated… someone
who, while wielding a spoon in their hand to
fight back, just needed a virtual hand to hold
the bowl.
Fast-forward a few years and 3 cookbooks later. I’m still cooking, blogging, and
thriving at Pink Kitchen… and helping others to cook and thrive. Hopefully, that will
continue each day. Take that, cancer. Now

Valarie Thornton-Willoughby,
Pioneer
by LAURIE BENNETT
Don’t ask God to order your steps, if you aren’t willing to move your feet.
— Jewel Diamond Taylor
“Many people in my family have died from
various types of cancer and I am the first
person in my family to survive it.” says Valarie
Thornton-Willoughby, Durham, NC.
Diagnosed with stage two breast cancer at
the age of thirty, this young African American
woman faced fears that many women never
had courage to voice. In 1980, few women
discussed breast cancer and African American women rarely talked about the disease.
Valarie believes her committed plan of action
and steps that her changed lifestyle helped
her to be the first in her family to not only
survive cancer but to thrive.
Valerie graduated from college at age sixty
from Emmanuel Bible Institute in Durham,
NC with a Bachelor’s Degree in Religious

Education. She is now working towards her
Masters Degree in Christian Counseling.
Such actions only validate and articulate the
tenacity and standard that Valarie Willoughby lives by.
Pursuing knowledge has always been a
keen goal for Valarie and she has more to
show for it than just a framed diploma hung
in her office. She has a fuller life.
“In 1980 I took it upon myself to learn
how to prioritize the many doctors appointments and how to manage my treatment
plans. I pondered the whole process of diagnosis to healing to full recovery. I knew that
it was a distinct impossibility that I was the
only African American woman who had ever
had this disease so I went on the quest of my
life. Being the nerd that I am, after my initial
diagnosis I started researching breast cancer,
stages, mastectomy and anything else I could
locate. Every day I went to the library after I
dropped my children at school and spent the
most of the day reading and taking notes and
writing down questions I wanted to ask my
doctor. I spent the rest of the time seeking
other doctors’ opinions in hopes of having
a different diagnosis. Frighteningly they all
gave me the same diagnosis and treatment
plans.”
“One day, I was in the library going
through stacks of books and research looking
for information on moles because I had read
that when a mole on your body changes, it
can be a health warning signal. Since my
body had many moles, it seemed like a good
idea to research more about moles.” With
research books piled in her arms, she bumped
into a woman as she was leaving. The woman
assumed Valarie was a medical student and
proceeded to ask about her school. When
Valarie shared that she was a breast cancer
patient seeking more information about her
disease and attempting to educate herself on
treatment plans, a strange look crossed the
woman’s face. Valarie believes that this accidental meeting was one of life’s serendipity
moments.
Valarie had just met the head of radiology, Dr. Moore from the Philadelphia College
of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Moore’s goal
was to locate twenty women diagnosed with
breast cancer to try a new experimental treatment called a lumpectomy as an option to
mastectomy. The day they bumped into each
other, Dr. Moore had 19 of the 20 women
needed to be the first for the new lumpectomy trial. Valarie was her 20th.
Shortly thereafter Valarie was introduced
to the surgeon who would perform the
lumpectomy and the the following week she
underwent the new procedure and stayed
a week in the hospital. Two weeks after her
lumpectomy surgery, Valarie began the prescribed radiation treatments. For 24 weeks,
seven days a week, Valarie reported to the
radiologist at 7 a.m. Valarie continues, “But
what I kept telling myself during that time
was what every mother of two young children
says to herself, “let me get this done because
I have a lot to do. I’m busy and I don’t have
time for this.”
Valarie states that she does not regret the
experimental treatments because she believes
they helped save her life.
When it was time to see an oncologist
to discuss further treatment, she refused.
Several times doctors tried to convince her.
They reported that she was being very foolish
and that her type of stage two cancer was only
seen in women over 60 years old. She was
told that she had approximately two years to
live. Still she refused any further treatment
and was labeled ‘non-compliant’.
“I looked like a piece of burnt toast. I
was more tired than the word implies. I had
no appetite. I alternated between nausea
and constipation daily. I had no eyelashes,
no hair under my arms. My fingernails and
toenails felt like rubber, and my ears rang
constantly. Furthermore, I had a body that I
didn’t recognize any longer. I had had enough
as far as I was concerned,” shares Valarie. “I
believe God was telling me I did not need any
more treatment. I heard the Holy Spirit tell
me I was not going to die from breast cancer
and this gave me the faith to end my medical
treatments.”
“Because women were not encouraged
to discuss breast cancer, we didn’t know
what was available to us. We didn’t know
what coping methods might be available to
us. We didn’t know what treatment options
there were. We did what we were told to do.
African American women were silenced even
more. We were told to stuff some pink foam
in our bra and be on our merry way and all
would be fine. I immediately rejected the
pink molds and asked for brown. The looks
I received were enough to tell me that there
were little options for me and even less support,” states Valarie.
The 168 treatments of radiation in 1980
left some side effects that linger today, 31
years later. “My fingernails still won’t grow
and I am allergic to the acrylic they use in
false nails so I can’t get my nails done. The
hair under my right arm never grew back but
I don’t consider that a problem. I still suffer
from lymphedema on my right hand and
shoulder but I feel grateful that God used me

to make me sit outside on our front steps
when the weather was nice so that I would
get fresh air. If I started a book that interested me, I’d keep reading until I finished it.
My cousin now teases me and says that I will
read the phone book but I don’t go that far.
I have always been nosy and researched and
asked a millions questions about everything
and anything. The word curious does not
begin to describe me.”
She still felt she was incomplete after
dealing with cancer and treatment based
only on research, education and information. Valarie had not yet dealt with the
emotional issues that a breast cancer
diagnosis brings. “I was suffering from post
trauma stress disorder because I had never
dealt with any of my emotions during
breast cancer. I had repressed my feelings
about the cancer so that I could focus
solely on getting physically well. Later
while I was recovering from anemia and
a hysterectomy, I realized these unhealed
issues were taking a toll on me. I sought help
from a professional counselor. She helped me
to see that dealing emotionally with a situation is just as important as doing something
about it. Using the tools she gave me, I began
to deal with these unhealed emotions day by
day,” Valarie said.
“I am still not very emotional, my daughters tease me about it all the time. But today
I understand better that emotion has its
place and if I feel it, I go with the feeling even
though it seems my intellect kicks in first. I
believe God gave me the gift of being able to
emotionally detach myself from a situation so
that I can look at it objectively and figure out
what to do for myself and for others”, Valarie
continued.
Yet, Valarie, a woman who did not know
how to handle her own emotions, went on to
school to study counseling and how to help
others with their circumstances and emotions. Not only is she an activist and advocate
for breast health, Valarie serves as a Health &
Wellness ministry leader at Antioch Baptist
Church. She coordinates health fairs, seminars, and programs that pertain to the health
issues that are plaguing African Americans.
Today she is studying to be a Chaplain at her
local hospital to assist women and families.
This is in addition to singing in her church
choir, serving as a Sunday School teacher and
being ordained as a minister at her local com-
munity church.
Valarie indeed chose a life that portrays
one of her favorite quotes, “Don’t ask God to
order your steps, if you aren’t willing to move
your feet.”
A wife, mother and a grandmother to
six, Valarie Thornton-Willoughby at age 61
thrives. She learned at a young age about
breast cancer, and was determined to be
proactive in her healing. She researched her
body from head to mole. She formulated her
wellness plan. She agreed to a lumpectomy at
a time when the new procedure was unheard
of. She listened to her body and at age 31 said
no to chemotherapy against the professional
advice from the medical staff. She learned
how to better manage her emotions and how
to heal more deeply on other levels of her life.
Today she counsels women and families
for their mental, physical, emotional and
spiritual well-being. “I am able to help people
because I understand their fears, doubts and
concerns about situations in their life. I am
able to help them because I can lead them
through their emotions with truths and facts
about their circumstances. I help people because I listen to them and help them see past
what they are facing in the present moments,”
Valarie said.
Valarie serves many breast cancer support
groups that are mission minded to wellness
and healthy well-being. n

Thriver Profile
Day by Day
by LAURIE BENNETT
“When a mother contacts me asking for help because her daughter has been
diagnosed with breast cancer, my first bit of advice is this:
let the patient be in charge. Have her tell you and others what she needs.
Otherwise, there will be a great deal of lost energy,
but by having the patient in charge, everyone will benefit.” — Charmayne Dierker
Charmayne is the mother of Lillie Shockney. Together Charmayne and Lillie founded the
Mothers of Daughters with Breast Cancer, a non for profit organization assisting mothers. mothersdaughters.org
Wanda Knight, a woman in her seventies, lives with a sassy vigor and a vitalized
lifestyle that represents the class of her heart
and her beauty. Wanda has been married
to her husband Gerald for fifty two years.
Together they raised four children, Kim,
Michele, Steve and Jeff and have eight
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
To this day Wanda remains close with her
lifelong girlfriends. Every year since high
school they continue to meet annually for a
weekend getaway.
Together these women have shared their
life’s experiences and challenges and have
learned to support each other.
In 1995 Wanda’s oldest daughter Kim
was diagnosed with life threatening breast
cancer at the age of 35.
As a mother it was difficult to witness
my daughter endure the attempted cancer
treatments that were severe and long lasting.
Because Kim lived only an hour away, I
traveled to be with her as much as possible.
Kim’s breast cancer was so progressive that
she required chemotherapy before the surgery

treatments and breast surgery followed by a
bone marrow transplant. In the fall of 1995
Michele and I took Kim to Barnes Hospital
in St Louis for her bone marrow transplant.
For six weeks I never left her side.
Following the transplant Kim demonstrated what she wanted to do in her life by
spending time with her new nephew Mitchell, orchestrating to have family photos with
her nieces and nephews, and taking a vacation together with her sister, her girlfriends
and me.
Even though Kim was dealing with her
own health issues and mortality concerns,
Kim encouraged and gently pushed me to
start my own business. Although I have
worked most of my adult life with our successful family business, Knight Auction
Service, I took her advice.
I now believe Kim knew I would need
something to busy myself with after her passing. Even though I never talked or believed
she would pass. A mother always has hope to
the end. I never did not have hope. But Kim
knew. And Kim’s nudging to me opening the
store was Kim’s way of taking care of me.
With help from Steve, my oldest son, I opened
Knights Men’s Wear in downtown Lebanon,
Missouri prior to the time of Kim’s passing
in October 1997.
Ten years later Michele, my second
daughter was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Although a different type of cancer, the news
to me was more than frightening and overwhelming, at first it was paralyzing.
“I remember the day that my younger
brother and I told Mom and Dad about Michele’s diagnosis. I watched Mom catch her
breath and just absorb what we had just told
them. Days and weeks later I continued to
watch my mom focus on Michele’s wellness
and to keep life going for all of us. She never
stopped, she continued every day moving
forward with her life which helped each of
us to do the same in our lives. She gathered
information, educated herself and helped all
of us. She might have had tears, or silence
in her day, but she kept all of us in a hopeful
attitude,” said Steve.
I handled the news of Michele the same
as I handled the news of Kim. I continued
to care for my family and to move forward
the best I could. When my fears arose and
gripped me, I willed for hope and strength.
Thankfully Michele was treated successfully for her cancer. Michele continued
to operate the day to day activities of her
business and alongside her husband, they
focused on raising my grandson Mitchell.
During Kim’s treatment, and before her own
breast cancer diagnosis Michele assisted her
local breast cancer foundation, The Breast
Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks. Today, she
continues her service to the foundation as a
board director.
A mother of two daughters who both had
breast cancer makes one ask, how do one
handle such crisis as you bury your oldest
daughter and then face the disease with your
remaining daughter? Wanda Knight will tell
you day by day and always with a resolve of
will to be strong and with a hopeful attitude
about life.
One of the first employees of Knight’s
Men’s Wear was Lori Appleby. “Steve hired
me the day before Kim’s passing because the
family needed someone to keep the store
open while they grieved. I had never met
Wanda until the day after Kim’s funeral. I
worked for her for the next ten years while
the store remained open. I was there in the
days following Kim’s passing and through
Michele’s diagnosis and treatment. In one of
the store rooms, we always had a fresh pot
of coffee brewing. Wanda’s friends would
stop by unannounced and meet Wanda in
the backroom and just talk with her, listen to
her and love her. I watched her many friends
support and love her in that backroom with
nothing more than two chairs and a coffeepot. Having known Wanda for the past
seventeen years, I admire how she lives her
life with strength and a gracious attitude.”
It is by choice that I continue to move forward in living. I get up everyday. I work. I
love and care for my children and grandchildren and husband. I have my faith to get me
through the days. Things that I endured and
faced made me a stronger person because I
allowed them to strengthen me. n

Your Body, Your
Mind and Their Link
to Your Health
by SANDY JOST, PH.D.
The explanation for why a rare individual recovers from extraordinary
circumstances lies somewhere within the complex workings of the body
and mind. Scientists are now aware that these are not so much spontaneous
healings as the result of hard work and events that somehow bring about a
change from the individuals’ original way of thinking.
Guided imagery is one valuable tool that
can help you prepare your mind and body for
such change.
Guided imagery has been studied rather
extensively in various areas of health. It has
been shown to:
• Reduce difficult emotions like fear,
powerlessness, and depression
• Instill confidence
• Create optimism
• Reduce physical tension and stress
• Decrease panic and anxiety attacks
• Help to manage pain and thereby reduce
unwanted suffering
• Diminish unwanted side effects of
conventional medical treatments
• Improve sleep and sleep patterns
• Enhance the immune response
• Deepen one’s “will to live”
• Evaluate and change unhealthy beliefs
• Transform an experience into once that is
positive
• Help to attain a higher quality of life
This is only a partial overview of what
scientists have found when adding guided
imagery to medical treatment.
So how does this relate to you and your
health?
If you think this could only be a minor ad-
38
Breast Cancer Wellness Magazine | Be a Thriver!®
dition to your particular case, believing your
specific health issue to be totally unrelated to
your mind, read on.
The most up-to-date medical systems
now attempt to incorporate a more three-dimensional look at treatment rather than just
trying to determine what repairs need to be
made on a malfunctioning body of organs.
The mind plays an incredible role in the
workings of the body. We have come to learn
that the body and mind can no longer be
separated out as two physically distinct units,
for they are completely interwoven with
biological fluids and electrical responses. This
complex two-way communications system is
in constant contact with each and every cell
of your body as well as the deepest regions of
your mind.
Be sure to always include a doctor in
your search for health! Doctors have many
tools of their own that are very important.
Please keep in mind, however, that the tools
you bring to this quest have equal value, for
it does not take any college degree to learn
how to interpret this communication system
between your body and mind effectively.
If your particular doctor does not offer
such a three-dimensional look into your
treatment, do not wait to add some of the
easier methods such as the ones that are
included in my book, Your Body, Your
Our give
back pledge:
Mind, and Their Link to Your Health – How
GUIDED IMAGERY can bring extraordinary
results to your life. These easy methods are
designed to give you a simply entry into the
more all-inclusive approach.
But do not be discouraged with the medical community. Understand what your doctor
is trying to do.
First of all, our culture trains doctors to
announce every negative outcome possible
in order to protect themselves against legal
implications. But once it is more widely recognized that those same negative pronouncements put their patients into mindsets that
are not conducive for healing, the patients
will be asking for change and we will begin to
see a more well-rounded approach.
Secondly, patients and caregivers have
been known to get angry when doctors are
unable to give a definite answer about an
unknown situation. Our doctors are NOT capable of prophetic information, although we
might wish we could give them that power.
Never rely on anyone’s quoting of statistics to determine your particular situation – whether it concerns your outcome to
a life-threatening illness or the simple cold
that “appears to be going around.” Even if the
person quoting the “facts” is someone with
authority, it is only ever you (and your God)
who can determine your path.
Just as Olympic athletes add imagery to
their workout for peak performance no matter what the sport, so too should you consider
the addition of guided imagery to your treatment plan – no matter what the health issue.
But remember, just as an Olympic athlete
is never guaranteed a particular win yet still
chooses to compete, so too can you choose to
recognize that there is no guarantee for the
type of outcome you will find as you pursue
healing.
Healing takes different forms for different
people at different times of their lives. Without a predetermined view of the “cure” you
currently wish for yourself, trust that guided
imagery will help you to find a balance that
will allow you to more peaceably communicate your true nature to the world. For no
matter what form your own “healing” may
take, it is only when your mind can find this
peace that your body will then be free for the
real healing to begin.

What is GUIDED IMAGERY?
Guided imagery is the process of using a
person’s voice to guide you to a deeper state
of relaxation, where an imaginary experience feels so real that it can include sight,
sound, smell, taste, touch, and emotion. It
often uses images that are symbolic so that
interpretation can take place at a very deep,
emotional level. Guided imagery often relies
on a recorded voice. Customized sessions held
one-on-one with a professional are another
option; just as is the use of your own inner
voice accompanied by nothing more than
a creative imagination. But no matter what
the venue, guided imagery is delivered with
the intention of creating a desired outcome,
which in this case, is for an improvement in
health.

But, if your mind is already affecting your
body’s health and you want that effect to be
more positive, then how do you CHANGE
what your mind is thinking enough so that
you can have a different outcome associated
with your health?
Guided imagery is one of the easiest tools
you can use to help change what your mind
is communicating to your body as well as to
help you listen to whatever your body is trying to communicate to your mind.
If your body is “expressing” a state
of un-health that you would like to
change....so that you can heal, or cope,
or even simply learn from your body
as you would a wise old friend....then
guided imagery is for you and is also
very simple to do.
You body is an incredible sponge for
the words you hear over and over again,
as well as those highly charged emotional
word you may have heard only once. Your
body takes in all these words as pictures,
translating them quite easily into various
emotions and images that you associate with
each picture.
Your body is also incredibly adept at
expressing these emotions to the rest of your
body through a physical translation that
occurs in the form of various neurochemical signals that travel through the cells. Just
as a blush is the physical expression of an
embarrassing thought and “butterflies in the
stomach” are the physical expression of fear,
some of these neurochemical messages are
easier for us to interpret than others.
This two-way communication between
body and mind is constant. Since it is occurring anyway, learning more about this language can help you to tap into it and become
more aware of what your body is expressing
to your mind and what you are expressing to
your body.
Over time, you can become quite adept
at speaking your body’s language and begin
to direct it more intentionally toward all that
you want it to be expressing. Subsequently, if
it is at all feasible for your body to give what
you are asking, it will comply; for your body
is always trying to give you what it thinks is
“best” at any given moment.
Everyone can learn to speak this language
of the bodymind. It is very easy to learn. Use
the same mind you once used as a child – one
with a natural inclination toward a creative
imagination!
Lean on whatever images “speak your
language” by using the senses that are
strongest in your enjoyment of life’s various
touches, sights, smells, or sounds.
Listen to a guided imagery CD over
and over again, just as you would a favorite
song on a CD, and learn to
experience a healing exchange
through a luxurious twenty
minute session of intentional
and complete relaxation.

How GUIDED IMAGERY can
bring extraordinary results to your life, written by Sandy Jost, Ph.D. Included with the
book is the CD: ONE guided imagery session
designed to assist you in the management of
your health issues. Dr Jost recommends:
• Play the CD with headphones whenever
possible.
• Find a quiet spot where no attention is necessary – NEVER while driving a vehicle!
• Journal to clear your mind and write down
everything occupying your thoughts.
• Keep your journal private to encourage
freedome of expression
• Sit in a position not likely to put you to
sleep; relax; and then listen to the CD.
• Journal again to process all that you experience in each imagery session.
• Repeat daily – or more if necessary – to
achieve relief and encourage the changes
that are more likely to occur with practice. n
