For the sixteenth consecutive year, the University of Portland received a top-10 ranking by U.S. News & World Report in their “2011
America’s Best Colleges” publication. The University is ranked 9th
out of 125 institutions listed in the “Regional Universities – West”
classification. The University experienced unprecedented growth in
the past year, dedicating four buildings including two new residence halls, a landmark campus belltower, and an expanded and
renovated engineering building. Also expanded was the campus
dining facility to nearly double its former size. The University also
welcomed its largest incoming freshman class to date, a record 816
students, in the fall of 2009 and received an all-time high of 11,382
applications for fall 2010 enrollment.
University Named One of Top U.S. Green Colleges
The University of Portland is one of the most environmentally responsible colleges in the United States and Canada, according to
The Princeton Review ( www.PrincetonReview.com ). The University
was selected for inclusion in the just-released second annual edition of The Princeton Review’s Guide to 311 Green Colleges: 2011 Edition.
The University was also recognized in the inaugural 2010 edition.
Created by The Princeton Review in partnership with the U.S.
Green Building Council (USGBC). The University of Portland, one of
the only schools in the country with a LEED Platinum certified
building and the first college in the West to ban the sale of disposable plastic water bottles, joins the ranks of outstanding universities and colleges nationwide that are leading the green movement
through special programs and initiatives.
University Ranks First in Fulbrights
The University of Portland ranks first nationally among “master’s
institutions” in a listing of top producers of Fulbright Awards for
U.S. students in 2010-11, according to a study released by The Chronicle of Higher Education. Six University of Portland students were
awarded the prestigious Fulbright scholarships in 2010, with five
accepting. That places the University of Portland atop the rankings,
ahead of such schools as Villanova University, St. Edwards University,
Seattle University and Santa Clara University. The University of Portland has been a leader among its peer institutions for several years
in producing Fulbright scholars, ranking first nationally in 2007-08
and second nationally in 2006-07, 2008-09 and 2009-10. A total of
24 students from the University of Portland have won Fulbrights.
Bloomburg Businessweek Ranks U.P. Tops In Oregon
Bloomberg Businessweek has named the University of Portland as
the top school in Oregon for “return on investment.” In a state-bystate ranking of schools providing graduates with the most return
for the price of their education, the University of Portland came out
on top among all colleges and universities in Oregon. Bloomberg
Businessweek estimates that the 30-year net return on investment
for graduates of University of Portland is $779,600.

1995 to 2001 she was a tenured faculty member at Rose Hulman Institute of Technology.
University Ranks Third for Peace Corps Volunteers
The University of Portland is ranked third nationally among its peer
institutions in producing Peace Corps volunteers, according to a
study released on October 25, 2010. This marks the second consecutive year the University has been ranked among the Top 5 nationally –
last year the University placed fourth. Currently, 23 undergraduate
alumni and two graduate alumni are serving in the Peace Corps.
Since the Peace Corps was founded in 1961, 190 alumni have served
as volunteers. The University, along with Lewis & Clark College (tied
for third with UP), is one of two Oregon schools to rank among the
Top 5 nationally in any of the three classification groups – ‘small
schools’ with less than 5,000 undergraduates, ‘medium schools’
with between 5,000 and 15,000 undergraduates and ‘large schools’
with more than 15,000 undergraduates.

School of Engineering Renamed for Donald E. Shiley
The University of Portland’s school of engineering will now be
known as the Donald P. Shiley School of Engineering in recognition
of the late Donald Shiley, a 1951 graduate who was an engineer, inventor, entrepreneur, businessman, philanthropist and loving husband and father. Among his many groundbreaking inventions was
the Bjork-Shiley heart valve, an innovative medical device that has
been credited with saving more than a half million lives. The announcement was made at a dedication ceremony on December 3,
2010. Donald and Darlene Shiley’s generosity and commitment to

for Earth Science educators. These notices are “Teachable Moments”
that provide a short summary of major earthquakes that can be
used by educators to incorporate discussions of earthquakes in the
news and seismic hazards into their classrooms. An earthquake notice PDF is developed within 12 hours of any M7+ earthquake worldwide. For earthquakes that have substantial human impact, a fiveto-twelve-slide PowerPoint presentation and a QuickTime animation of seismic wave paths are developed within 24 hours. These
earthquake education products are posted on the IRIS “Recent Earthquakes Teachable Moments” web page (www.iris.edu/hq/retm) and
are featured on the IRIS Home Page. These earthquake notices have
a large audience, especially with K-12 Earth Science teachers across
