Weekly Message
Our parish held a Volunteer Appreciation Dinner for all volunteers on May 28th in the Family Life
Center. It was well-attended, even though there were some volunteers who were not able to attend
the event. I am so grateful to every parishioner who gives of their time, talent and treasure in service
to the spreading of the gospel. Your generosity and service is what makes St. Mary Magdalene a community of faith and service in Humble and its environs. Special thanks to the Stewardship Committee
for organizing the dinner.
With the graduations all done and students out of school for summer vacation, I would like to wish
safe travels to all those who will be traveling during this period. No matter where you go, find time to
fulfill your obligation to God and his Church.
With the summer vacation comes our annual CCE summer study program for children who would like to do their religious education at this time. This program will be held in our parish Monday through Friday, June 20th to June 24th,
and also from June 27th to July 1st. The time is from 6:30pm to 9pm daily. We are expecting over 300 children for this
program this year. We need more volunteers to help as catechists and aides in the classrooms during the summer program. If you are a Catholic who desires to share your faith with the young, please contact Mike Smith or Carissa Bull in
our Faith Formation for Children and Youth department for more information. We really need you to serve to make
this program a success.
In the last five weeks, we have run articles in the bulletin regarding the parish Pastoral Council. The Pastoral Council is
a consultative body that works closely with the pastor in meeting the pastoral needs and challenges of our parish. Pray
for the process of discerning new additions to the Pastoral Council members of the parish. Three current members are
ending their three-year term, and new ones will be added at 2:30pm this Sunday, June 5th.
Today’s first reading and gospel both tell stories of widows whose only child died but were brought back to life. In the
first reading, the prophet Elijah prayed to God for the dead son of the widow who provided shelter for him. In the gospel, Jesus brought back to life the dead son of the widow of Nain. The death of a loved one is always a sad thing. The
worst is to lose an only child. The prophet Elijah and Jesus knew what this could cause the mothers, who had already
lost so much in the death of their husbands. At a time and in a society where the husbands were often the only income
earner in the family, the death of such husbands meant loss of livelihood for the woman and the family. Widows were
poor and marginalized. The remaining hope of the widows in today’s readings was their sons, whom they had thought
would be able to take care of them. The death of these sons meant the death of their hope and their lives. The intervention of God in both instances restored these sons to life, thereby restoring the hope of the widows.
In the gospel story, it seems the neighbors of the widow offered the support they could for her as they comforted her on
the loss of her son. They accompanied her as the dead son was being carried in procession for burial, and then came
Jesus with his disciples, entering the town of Nain. They saw the procession. Jesus noticed the sorrow in the eyes of the
widow. Did Jesus know he was the only son of the widow? It is likely that Jesus recognized her as a widow by the way
she dressed. More importantly, Jesus saw a woman in distress and sorrow and was moved to assist her. Jesus was not
asked to help; he took the initiative. He was moved with pity to meet this woman in her time of need. What a joy for
this widow whose dead son came back to life and was given back to her by Jesus. The story did not relate the drama as
much, but one can only imagine what many felt about this experience. A dead son on his way to being buried was restored to life!
The miracle in today’s gospel is not about faith. The widow did not express faith in any way. This story is about the
compassion of Jesus. He was deeply moved by the sight of this grieving widow, and he intervened. The story is also
about the power of Jesus over death. The raising of this young man from the dead points to what Jesus wants to do in
the life of every human person. He longs to restore us to life, and more importantly, to offer us the gift of eternal life.

Jubilee Year of Mercy
Half the liturgical year 2016 is completed after six months of extraordinary celebrations: the Incarnation mystery: Jesus’s advent, nativity, epiphany; the Paschal mystery: Jesus’s passion, death, resurrection, Pentecost’s Holy Spirit; the solemnities of
Holy Trinity and Jesus’s Body and Blood. Today the Church resumes Sundays in Ordinary Time but with a Gospel of extraordinary mercy: Jesus raises a dead man to life. Yet, the one who benefits most from his extraordinary mercy is not the dead son
but his widowed mother. With her husband and only son deceased, this woman’s material support, in that patriarchal society,
had vanished. So had her emotional support, leaving her helpless, abandoned, on society’s “peripheries.” One of Pope Francis’s
hopes in calling this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy is to transform us into more extraordinary Christians, by making our
caring outreach to just such vulnerable people, and our practical self-sacrificing love for them, our ordinary, daily, Christian
way of life!

Word of Life
“When a patient says, ‘I don’t want to be a burden,’ it
may really be a question: ‘Am I a burden?’ …When a patient
says, ‘I might as well be dead,’ he may really be saying, ‘No one
cares about me.’ Many studies show that assisted suicide requests
are almost always for such psychological or social reasons.”

Community Food Fair—Saturday, June 11th, 2016
Hunger is not only an affliction of the poor, but also
the victims of natural disasters, those unable to work,
the oppressed, and the displaced. To feed the hungry
is the first corporal work of mercy. It was given by Jesus when he spoke to his disciples about the Judgment of the Nations (Mt 25:31-46), and it stands at
the top of his list. On June 11th, 2016, St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church has partnered with the Houston Food Bank to host a Community Food Fair. We
will distribute food to needy families within our community starting after 10:00 A.M. and lasting until 1:00
P.M. in the north parking lot.
Parishioners interested in volunteering their time
should e-mail Wanda Conley at
[email protected].

PRAYER WARRIORS NEEDED FOR THE 1 CHURCH
1 DAY PRAYER VIGIL PROGRAM
This program provides prayer for our community
and the communities around us 24 hours a day,
365 days a year. Think of it as a canopy or umbrella of continuous prayer that protects us from evil
and temptations. KSBJ Radio is the program sponsor, and the Humble, Kingwood, and Atascocita
areas are the pilot cities for this program which is
rapidly expanding to many other cities. Eventually,
it is hoped to have our entire nation and, indeed,
the entire world covered with continuous prayer.
This program can only be successful if two major
points are observed:
1. Churches of all denominations and faiths must
unite in a common cause in prayer. So far, we
have 38 churches participating in the Kingwood, Humble, and Atascocita area.
2. Prayer warriors must keep their commitment to
pray during their assigned hour and must do
their very best to pray the intentions distributed
to them while praying for an entire hour. Satan
will find and take advantage of any hour that is
not prayed to disrupt and potentially cause our
“umbrella” to fail. We can only be as strong as
our weakest link, and each of us is a link in the
chain of continuous prayer.
Many of you already know the power of prayer
and find it easy and in fact find renew faith during
prayer. The Rosary, Adoration, Novenas, and the
like are examples of prayer times and are easily
adapted when praying the 1 Church 1 Day
intentions.
Just one hour a month from every member of our
dedicated and committed team of prayer warriors
is all that is required for this program. Each
Church has been assigned a specific day for prayer. St. Mary Magdalene has the 3rd Friday of every
month for our 24-hour period.
Please consider if you are willing and able to join
the St. Mary 1 Church 1 Day prayer warriors in
this incredibly challenging and rewarding program. Our Lady has said that prayer can save the
world, so let us begin by saving one community at
a time by each of us praying for one of the hours
during our 3rd Friday 24-hour vigil every month!

2017 Mass Intention Record Book
Our Mass Intention Record Book for 2017 is now open. One of
the spiritual works of mercy is to pray for the living and the
dead, and the greatest and most powerful prayer of the Church is
the sacrifice of the Mass, since the fruits of the Mass are the very
fruits of Jesus's redemption. For that reason, all are encouraged
to have Masses offered for loved ones who have died, for the
living who have some need, and in thanksgiving for benefits received. This practice of requesting a Mass is a beautiful and wonderful part of our Catholic tradition.

Guidelines for Mass Intentions:
Requests for Mass reservations will be taken on a "firstcome, first-served" basis
People are requested to come in person to reserve the Mass
dates, not over the phone
Please, no more than 10 Mass intentions reserved in one
visit; you must wait six months to make another request if
you reach the maximum in one visit
You may also bring no more than 10 Mass intentions on
behalf of one other person who is unable to come in person
$5.00 is the minimum offering for each Mass intention
We will allow two (2) intentions for each Mass to allow
more parishioners to be able to offer Masses for their loved
ones.
We appreciate your observance of these guidelines.

Birthright Humble Thank-You Letter for
Mother’s Day Baby Shower
Dear Father Felix and Parishioners,
Birthright of Humble was overwhelmed with your generosity of wonderful new items for our moms on Mother’s
Day. Our clients that have made the decision to have their
baby—even though it may be without family support,
support from the father of the baby, or financial means—
are so pleased to have these items. It is a blessing to
them to have support from us. It is such a simple way to
encourage the moms that the decision they made during
a difficult time was the right decision. After the birth of
the baby, we give the mothers a large bag filled with
items to help them get started.
Birthright Humble has been established for 30 years. This
year, we are celebrating a milestone. We are here to support our clients any way we can, and with the support of
so many churches, agencies, and individuals, we are able
to do that.
Thank you!
Yours for life,
Nadine Patterson, Director

Opportunity for Young Adult Catholics to
Travel to Rome and Assisi
Shannon Deitz of St. Martha’s parish in Porter is or‐
ganizing a young adult Catholic travel program to
Assisi, Florence, and Rome in May of 2017 and invites
you to join her and Fr. Richard McNeillie. This is a
program that weaves together visits to places of great
historical and religious significance with opportuni‐
ties to enjoy the warm hospitality, food, and culture
of the Italians. We will walk in the footsteps of earlier
generations of Christians who have traveled to Rome
to visit the tombs of the great apostles Peter and Paul,
who have wandered through the mystical streets of
Assisi to learn from St. Francis and St. Clare, and who
journeyed to Florence to see the masterpieces of Mi‐
chelangelo, Brunelleschi, and other Renaissance vi‐
sionary artists.
Our accommodations are centrally located so that
during the built‐in free time, we will have a chance to
explore the piazzas, cafés, shops, and restaurants that
make Italy such a satisfying destination. Join us as we
travel across borders to make new friends, connect
with our faith heritage, and learn from the men and
women who have made Rome, Florence, and Assisi
the great art and cultural capitals of the world.

an inability to pay… All you need to do is talk to Fr. Felix before August 27th, and he can approve a tuition
waiver. For those who miss the August 27th event, we
will accept “late registrations” on Sunday, October 2nd…
Absences will accrue for students who miss classes due
to late registration.
Summer Study CCE: We will
launch our popular two-week summer
intensive program, better known as
“Summer Study,” in two short weeks!

we still need 12 catechists… You do not have to be a

a heart for young people and a desire to share the faith
God has already put in your heart. Completion of the
archdiocesan-mandated VIRTUS training course is
also required. Please contact Mike or Carissa for
more information about serving as a catechist.

The Year of Mercy
“Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful” (Luke 6:36)
For Fathers and Grandfathers Learn more about how you can make a difference in the world by
making a difference in your own family life. During this month of June, as we celebrate Father’s Day,
visit the websites of the National Center for Fathering (www.fathers.com) and the National Fatherhood
Initiative (www.fatherhood.org) More than 20 million children live in a home without the physical presence of a father. Millions more have dads who are physically present but emotionally absent. If it were
classified as a disease, fatherlessness would be an epidemic worthy of attention as a national emergency. Fathers need our encouragement and support. Thank a father today; help a father today; be a
better father yourself!
“Little Dresses for Africa”: Update on Progress: We have more than 100 dresses and more than 30
pairs of boy shorts ready to ship this summer. In addition, thanks to donations and loving hands working, we prepared over fifty dress kits and more than 25 shorts kits for people to take and sew. To our
parishioners, we say “thank you!” We commend you for your efforts to "clothe the naked!” May God
continue to bless us all, especially in our social service efforts.
AFF Summer Gathering Anyone who has been in any way connected to Adult Faith Formation (RCIA, Bible
Study, sacrament prep, etc.) in the past year is invited to join us for a little food, conversation and fun as we gather at
Spring Creek Bar-B-Que on Thursday, June 9, 2016, 6:30-8:30 pm (or until they kick us out…). We just want to
thank God for our year, meet up with old friends, and maybe make some new ones! Texas theme—come as you are or

Catholic Mass Etiquette, Part 4 of 5 (encore edition)
Ivana T. Meshell
Director of Adult Faith Formation, St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church
As summer approaches, this is the time of year when Catholics generally become more lax about Mass attendance, and those who do sometimes need a little reminder to continue to give Mass the best they’ve got. Over
the next several weeks, I will be re-running a slightly-updated series of articles which I have received much feedback on.
For comments and questions, or if you would like the entire text in one document, write me at [email protected]. Hope
to hear from you!
So much that we associate with appropriate Mass etiquette has to do with our interior attitude toward Mass. What we
believe shows in the way we act, the way we present ourselves, and what we choose to do or not do. We live in a society that overly-emphasizes a “me-centered” lifestyle. Most people do what’s convenient for them. Mass is not about us as
individuals; it’s about all of us who are called by God himself to be his people.
10. Genuflecting and Bowing Catholics genuflect to the tabernacle, in which is held the sacred Body of the
Lord. Properly, genuflecting is done by touching one knee to the floor (though some people may find this difficult due to
age, bad knees, etc.) Do the best you can. The tabernacle was kept in our chapel for 22 years; a few months ago, it was
moved to the main church, so it is proper to genuflect there. You can always locate the tabernacle in any Catholic parish
by looking for the red sanctuary lamp, in which there always burns a candle. When entering a Catholic Church in which
the tabernacle is not present behind the altar, one should bow to show reverence to the altar, which is both the altar of
sacrifice and table from which we share the Body and Blood of Christ. We are not bowing to the crucifix but to the altar.
One may bow before exiting the pew so as to not block the flow of traffic out of the building. People should always either
bow or genuflect (whichever is appropriate) before leaving the church. If you are able to genuflect, it is only necessary to
do so as you come into the church and when you leave. A simple, reverent bow is best if you are passing in front of the
altar & tabernacle numerous times while you are in the church building.
11. Being on Time Why do this? Because it’s worth it--for your family and for God’s family. We take time for things
that are important. Of course, people are going to be late from time to time. It’s unavoidable! Children take longer to get
dressed than you had hoped, automobiles malfunction, unpleasant things happen. If you are occasionally late for Mass,
please come anyway. You are still a part of God’s people! Woe to those of us who glare at our latecomers! However,
there are two sides of this story. For people who are chronically, habitually and routinely late—to put it bluntly, that’s just
plain rude! Throngs of people flooding in ten minutes after Mass has begun interrupting our sacred liturgy and is inconsiderate of everyone present. If anything, Catholics should plan on arriving and being seated ten minutes before Mass
begins. It gives us a chance to catch our breath and focus on the awesome thing we are about to do. Stemming the tide
of constant tardiness makes the quality of our worship better; it helps us give our best to God. Shaking this bad habit
can only be done one Sunday at a time. Acknowledge any past failures, let it go, and make a fresh start. Know your limitations and strive to leave home early enough to park and be seated before Mass begins. Making the effort shows that
Mass is important, isn’t it?
12. Holding Hands During the Our Father Nothing in the rubrics (directions for worship) tells us that we must
hold hands during the Our Father. In other words, it’s not in the script! It rather spontaneously grew up among the people around the 1970s, and many parishes are still doing it. In addition, people also started the practice of raising each
other’s hands up higher and higher during the benediction: “For the Kingdom, the power and the glory are yours…” As
an artificial insertion, hand raising doesn’t have any theological significance whatsoever, and the mere act of holding
hands suggests a unity that might more properly be emphasized during the Creed, not the Our Father. The Holy See
has not spoken out about this practice one way or the other, and though the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has discussed it, they have not agreed nor obtained permission to either enforce or deny the practice. While holding
hands usually works in small groups, it can feel like an imposition on some people who really don’t have much of an option when the persons on either side of them grab hands, or if you’d rather not instigate it but feel it would be rude not to,
since that’s the common practice. No one really knows what the protocol should be. Awkward! Some (including US bishops) have suggested that praying with upturned hands (called the "orantes" posture) during the Our Father, praying like
the priest, with hands extended, might be a way of settling this. Normally, the orantes position is reserved for priests only
during public worship, though it is an approved posture in Italy. For now, we are free do to whatever we are comfortable
with—hold hands or not hold hands, unless and until our bishops direct otherwise.
Holy Father, the Mass is your greatest gift to us. In remembering your Son and the sacrifice he made for us, help us to
treasure the Mass and treat it with the reverence and respect it deserves. Help us to treat one another with respect and
reverence when we come to Mass by the way we act, what we wear, and how we worship together. Make us, your people, holy in the proclaiming of your word and in sharing the Eucharist, and in doing so, let us become for you Christ’s gift
of love to all the world. We pray in Jesus’s name. Amen.
