weather, excellent student participation and many displays of house spirit. The highlight of the day
was witnessing 11 school records being set by the following students: Leanna Ryan, Christina Ryan,
James Sandilands, Jacob Matson and Laura Dorgan. Please refer to the sports section of this
newsletter for further details.

Our annual Swimming Sports was held at the C-Bay on 8 February. The day started out cool but
soon warmed up to provide ideal swimming conditions. There were seven school records broken on
the day, six by Korlina Volkov. If you would like to see a clip of Korlina in action go to
www.r2.co.nz/20130226. For further details on the swimming sports, please see the sports section
of the newsletter.

The Roncalli rowers are off to a very good start this year as they prepare for Maadi Cup at Lake
Karapiro in late March. At the recent South Canterbury Schools Rowing Competition, our rowers
won 12 medals. We wish them all the best for the upcoming South Island Championships this
coming weekend.

James Faulkner, a year 12 student, competed in this year’s
Speight’s Coast to Coast as the youngest competitor. James
finished the race in just under 15 hours. We are extremely
proud of James for his amazing achievement and look forward
to his upcoming presentation at assembly.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge and thank all the parents and friends of the college who give so
generously of their time to enable us to provide so many opportunities to our students – coaching,
managing, transporting, supporting, feeding, etc. We couldn’t do it without you.
Until next time,

Caritas Lenten Appeal
This week 10 year 12 students took part in a Caritas Social Justice day in Christchurch. They met with
Christchurch Catholic secondary schools to look at the work of Caritas especially in this time of Lent.
Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand is the Catholic Agency for Justice, Peace and Development. Only with our
help can they support development and relief for poor communities around the world, and work for justice
at home. Their programmes address the causes of poverty and injustice, wherever they exist.
Please remember that Lent is a time of Almsgiving and if you would like to contribute to the Lenten appeal
there is a Koha box in the school office.

Aoraki Secondary Schools Senior Qualifying Tennis Tournament
The Aoraki Secondary Schools Senior Qualifying Tennis Tournament was played at the ASB Tennis Centre
on Tuesday 12 February. Roncalli was represented with three teams:Girls
Boys
Mixed
Amelia Race, Shannon Wallace, Libby Taylor, Laura Dorgan
Adam Beck, Damian Tarrant, Liam Beck, Michael Lees
Luke Elsen, Daniel Kelliher, Emily Gilchrist, Akena Frisby
The girl’s competition consisted of six teams. Roncalli played Craighead in round one and for the first
time in a number of years Roncalli won the match 25 games to 20. In round two Roncalli caused an upset
beating Waitaki Girls by four games. These two wins qualified Roncalli to the final against a strong team
from Mt Hutt College. After some hard fought battles and long rallies Mt Hutt went onto win the final 4-2.
Congratulations to the girl’s team for finishing runners-up.
The mixed grade had three teams contesting the title, Roncalli, St Kevin’s and Ashburton. Roncalli beat St
Kevins 6-0, but lost to a strong Ashburton College team 4-2. This was a great team effort with both our girls
from year 9 playing at a senior tournament!
The boys team played some great tennis against tough opposition, finishing 4th in the boys grade.
Many thanks to the parents who came along to watch throughout the day, we certainly were the best
represented school at the tournament.
Weekly Secondary Schools Tennis League
Roncalli is represented with four teams in the Aoraki Secondary Schools weekly tennis league. Games are
played each Friday afterschool at the ASB Tennis Centre starting at 4pm. The competition runs for six
weeks, good luck to the students involved.
TOUCH - Aoraki Secondary Schools Touch Championships
Roncalli had four teams compete in the Aoraki Touch tournament on Sunday 17 February. It was a great
day and the students displayed some great skills and results for the day.
A special thank you to Les Cosgrove, Phil Lees, Vaughan O’Shaughnessy and Craig Dorgan for giving their
time to coach and manage the Roncalli teams on the day your time was very much appreciated. Also thank
you to the many parents and family members who came along with great support.
 The senior girls team played some great games beating Waitaki Girls, Timaru Girls High School and
Geraldine in the round robin, they lost to Craighead and finished 2nd place overall. Great job girls!
 We had two teams in the senior boy’s grade. This was closely contested between Roncalli and
Timaru Boys High. The Roncalli A team drew to TBHS A in the round robin game 2-3. The Roncalli B
team also showed some good skills and speed scoring first against the Roncalli A boys and narrowly
lost 4-2.
 Roncalli A boys faced TBHS A in the final, this was a very fast exciting game. Our boys lost 3-2
finishing runners up.
 The junior boys played TBHS in the final, this was a close game and Roncalli finished runners up
losing 3-2. Congratulations to all our players on a very successful day.

Keyboards wanted
A staff member, Anthony Whelan, has a request to purchase a second hand digital keyboard or an older
free-standing unit with weighted keys.
He would be interested if it provided a reasonable piano sound as he plays at St Thomas’s Church on
Saturday evenings.
The keyboard would be used in a studio situation as Anthony uses it for piano-files and with sequences as
well. Anthony’s intention is to extend the effects to provide a more Classical programme including Mozart,
Haydn and Bach over time. Thank you.
