RONCALLI COLLEGE NEWSLETTER ‘TO SEEK TRUTH AND PEACE ’ KIMIHIA TE PONO ME TE RANGIMARIE 1 March 2013 - Issue 2, Term 1 Dear Parents/Caregivers and students We have had an excellent start to the school year and I would like to take the opportunity in this newsletter to highlight some significant student achievements: We held our first academic assembly on 21 February to acknowledge students who were awarded Merit and Excellence Endorsements in 2012. The following students were awarded Academic Colours for achieving 50 or more credits at excellence level. Level 1 Excellence: Thomas Anderson, Chante Cooper, Lukas Elsen, Lauren Kelly, Bethany Lambourne, Honor Mills, Sophie Newmarch, Dane Oates, Lauren Waite & Shannon Wallace. Level 2 Excellence: Reani Ferrer, Mathhew Geach, Madison Hamel, Lisa-Sophie Keupper, Daniel Musson, Emily Newmarch, Georgina Rarity, Morgan Stevenson, Therese Styles & Stephanie Workman. Four Roncalli students, Louise Cody, Erin Broughton, Genevieve Cockburn and Samantha Isaacs, all achieved Scholarship English in 2012. In addition, Louise gained Excellence in three English externals, Genevieve gained Excellence in three French externals, Samantha gained Excellence in two Classics externals and Erin gained Excellence in Art Painting. We had fine weather, excellent student participation and many displays of house spirit. The highlight of the day was witnessing 11 school records being set by the following students: Leanna Ryan, Christina Ryan, James Sandilands, Jacob Matson and Laura Dorgan. Please refer to the sports section of this newsletter for further details. Our annual Swimming Sports was held at the C-Bay on 8 February. The day started out cool but soon warmed up to provide ideal swimming conditions. There were seven school records broken on the day, six by Korlina Volkov. The Roncalli rowers are off to a very good start this year as they prepare for Maadi Cup at Lake Karapiro in late March. At the recent South Canterbury Schools Rowing Competition, our rowers won 12 medals. We wish them all the best for the upcoming South Island Championships this coming weekend. James Faulkner, a year 12 student, competed in this year’s Speight’s Coast to Coast as the youngest competitor. James finished the race in just under 15 hours. We are extremely proud of James for his amazing achievement and look forward to his upcoming presentation at assembly. Finally, I would like to acknowledge and thank all the parents and friends of the college who give so generously of their time to enable us to provide so many opportunities to our students – coaching, managing, transporting, supporting, feeding, etc. We couldn’t do it without you. They met with Christchurch Catholic secondary schools to look at the work of Caritas especially in this time of Lent. Caritas Aotearoa New Zealand is the Catholic Agency for Justice, Peace and Development. Only with our help can they support development and relief for poor communities around the world, and work for justice at home. Their programmes address the causes of poverty and injustice, wherever they exist. Please remember that Lent is a time of Almsgiving and if you would like to contribute to the Lenten appeal there is a Koha box in the school office. “Let justice roll down like a river” AMOS 5:24 HPV Vaccination The SCDHB Primary and Community Services have provided us with some information on the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination. If you would like a copy of this information please ask at the office. Music Department Vocal tutor Mr Tim McLeod, works with Lisa-Sophie Kuepper during her singing lesson in the Annex. Mr McLeod is one of several itinerant music teachers who come into Roncalli College to take students for instruction in vocal and instrumental lessons. Lessons for 2013 are well under way with many students taking advantage of this opportunity at our school. Roncalli was represented with three teams:Girls Boys Mixed Amelia Race, Shannon Wallace, Libby Taylor, Laura Dorgan Adam Beck, Damian Tarrant, Liam Beck, Michael Lees Luke Elsen, Daniel Kelliher, Emily Gilchrist, Akena Frisby The girl’s competition consisted of six teams. Roncalli played Craighead in round one and for the first time in a number of years Roncalli won the match 25 games to 20. In round two Roncalli caused an upset beating Waitaki Girls by four games. These two wins qualified Roncalli to the final against a strong team from Mt Hutt College. After some hard fought battles and long rallies Mt Hutt went onto win the final 4-2. Congratulations to the girl’s team for finishing runners-up. The mixed grade had three teams contesting the title, Roncalli, St Kevin’s and Ashburton. Roncalli beat St Kevins 6-0, but lost to a strong Ashburton College team 4-2. This was a great team effort with both our girls from year 9 playing at a senior tournament! The boys team played some great tennis against tough opposition, finishing 4th in the boys grade. Many thanks to the parents who came along to watch throughout the day, we certainly were the best represented school at the tournament. Weekly Secondary Schools Tennis League Roncalli is represented with four teams in the Aoraki Secondary Schools weekly tennis league. Games are played each Friday afterschool at the ASB Tennis Centre starting at 4pm. The competition runs for six weeks, good luck to the students involved. TOUCH - Aoraki Secondary Schools Touch Championships Roncalli had four teams compete in the Aoraki Touch tournament on Sunday 17 February. It was a great day and the students displayed some great skills and results for the day. A special thank you to Les Cosgrove, Phil Lees, Vaughan O’Shaughnessy and Craig Dorgan for giving their time to coach and manage the Roncalli teams on the day your time was very much appreciated. Also thank you to the many parents and family members who came along with great support. The senior girls team played some great games beating Waitaki Girls, Timaru Girls High School and Geraldine in the round robin, they lost to Craighead and finished 2nd place overall. Great job girls! We had two teams in the senior boy’s grade. This was closely contested between Roncalli and Timaru Boys High. The Roncalli A team drew to TBHS A in the round robin game 2-3. The Roncalli B team also showed some good skills and speed scoring first against the Roncalli A boys and narrowly lost 4-2. Roncalli A boys faced TBHS A in the final, this was a very fast exciting game. Our boys lost 3-2 finishing runners up. The junior boys played TBHS in the final, this was a close game and Roncalli finished runners up losing 3-2. Key highlights were: Roncalli achieving a clean sweep of the four double sculls events in the boys and girls Under 15 & 16 categories. Jonny Rush and Caleb Stephenson having the perfect of three gold medals from three events, impressively winning both the Boys U15 and U16 Double along with the Boys U16 Quad with fellow crew members Justin Dovestone, Tim Coughlan and Cameron Moffat (cox). Novice Girls Rower Abby McIIroy also performed well winning a medal of each colour in her three races; Gold – Girls U15 Double with Bridget Cody, Silver – Girls U18 Lightweight Double with Libby Davenport and Bronze – Girls U15 Quad with Bridget Cody, Lily Simpson, Devaney Forbes and Olivia Cockroft (cox). Rowers are now focussed on performing well at this weekend’s South Island Secondary Schools Champs the last regatta before heading up to Maadi (NZ Secondary Schools Champs) mid March. St Kevin’s Cricket Exchange – Oamaru Roncalli had three teams travel to Oamaru for the annual cricket exchange with St Kevin’s on Wednesday 20 February. Girls 1st XI Roncalli lost the toss and were put into bat. Gretchen McAleer (9) and Jaimee Gilbert (13) got the team off to a solid start. Laura Dorgan top scored with 52 taking the team to 171. St Kevins were never in contention being bowled all out in the 19th over for 64. Kate Arscott three wickets for 6 off 5, Kasie Skyes-Beynon three wickets for 12 off 4 overs. Roncalli Girls 1st XI Roncalli Junior Boys Junior Boys Roncalli won the toss and elected to bat. Adam Hamel scored 29 and Burns Mills scoring 26. Aidan Barnes-Webber scored a fast 24 of 10 balls Jacob Mulholland opened the bowling and took 2 wickets off 3 overs. Matthew Holgate took 3 wickets off 4 overs and Bryan Ryan 2 wickets off 4 overs. Roncalli bowled and batted well with Roncalli winning by 107 runs. Well done boys. Boys 1st XI St Kevin’s won the toss and chose to bowl. Roncalli started off well with opener Tristan Cooper scoring 58 which was well backed up with some quick fire 20’s by Liam Beck (20), Henry Race (21) then our middle order collapsed losing 5 wickets in the space of about 20 runs, leaving us all out on 159. The Roncalli bowlers struggled to take wickets and St Kevin’s built a good partnership and eventually got the runs after 35 overs. Michael Lees was the best Roncalli bowler with 1-24 off his 8 overs. We were very fortunate that Robbie travelled to Timaru along with fellow Canterbury team-mate Telusa Veainu. The students involved thoroughly enjoyed the experience and learnt a lot from the drills and skills Robbie and Telusa taught them. South Island Secondary School Tennis Championships Roncalli College has been invited to enter a tennis team in the mixed grade at the South Island Secondary School Tennis Championships. This invitation at short notice was due to an out of town team withdrawing from the competition, and Aoraki as hosts, had the right to fill the spot. This is a great opportunity for Roncalli to enter with the event being held locally. Good luck to Luke Elsen, Daniel Kelliher, Amelia Race and Libby Taylor who will be representing the school this Friday and Saturday at the ASB Tennis Centre, Benvenue Avenue. Supporters Welcome!! Rowing - South Island Secondary Schools Rowing Regatta Good luck to the Roncalli Rowing Crews competing this weekend (2 & 3 March) at the South Island Secondary Schools Rowing regatta at Lake Ruataniwha. This is the last regatta before Maadi Cup. St Thomas Cricket Exchange – Christchurch St Thomas’s of Canterbury are hosting the annual cricket exchange in Christchurch on Wednesday 6 March. The 1st XI and Junior boys team will be representing the College. Students are to meet at the Roncalli Wellington Street entrance at 7.20am; we will be departing at 7.30am. All students involved will receive a letter with all relevant information and cost. **Please ensure the money is paid to the school office prior to departure** Athletics - Aoraki Secondary Schools Athletic Champs When: Wednesday 13 March 2013 (postponement Thursday 14, Friday 15 March) Where: Alpine Energy All Weather Track – Morgans Road Time: 8.30am – 4.00pm Students must bring a packed lunch, drink bottle, sun protection and warm clothing. Hurstpierpoint Rugby Scholarship 2013 This scholarship is for a Senior boy who is interested in applying for a playing opportunity at Hurstpierpoint in England. This Scholarship is available for: High Quality Elite players - Mid August – Mid December 2013. They are looking for a front rower, lock, number eight, fly half or centre. Keyboards wanted A staff member, Anthony Whelan, has a request to purchase a second hand digital keyboard or an older free-standing unit with weighted keys. He would be interested if it provided a reasonable piano sound as he plays at St Thomas’s Church on Saturday evenings. The keyboard would be used in a studio situation as Anthony uses it for piano-files and with sequences as well.
