The hot summer days have given way to the arrival of fall colors, and we’re enjoying crisp autumn days touring in our wonderful Italian machines. Wherever you are today, the year 2003 will be remembered as a landmark year for Fiat Lancia Unlimited. We’ve seen an incredible series of FLU events hosted all over North America, culminating with the 20th annual Fiat Freak Out in Asheville North Carolina. All agree that Freak Out 2003 in Asheville was special for many reasons; but those who attended witnessed real automotive history. It WAS the largest gathering of Fiat Lancia cars ever in North America. Perhaps more importantly for the future, you also witnessed the first fruits of the complete renaissance of our car club. And one more thing… Have you noticed, there’s virtually no downside or social stigma to owning a Fiat anymore? The world finally views our great Fiat and Lancia sports cars as an incredible automotive value with a fun quotient that’s off the scale. The enthusiasm in the eyes of our members proves it. FLU members; there’s no turning back, no excuses and no shame. As your club president since 2001 and one of this year’s FFO organizers, it was a tremendous moment in my life to see all of our cars and our membership standing with pride in front of Biltmore Estate for the spectacular panoramic photo. We did it… actually pulled it off; a stunning early morning photo of the largest group of cars ever assembled in front of Biltmore in its 107-year history. It’s never been tried, and never been done…how we could get that many cars from Sunspree Resort to the front lawn at Biltmore and snap a photo in one hour! It’s impossible! Ah, but take my advice…Never, ever say the word “impossible to a Fiat or Lancia owner. This club, like the US Marine Corps, leads from the front. Just like our Fiats; we set trends, rather than follow them. This year’s the Fiat Freak Out shattered virtually every record. The number of cars, members in attendance, number of meals served, number of raffle tickets sold and amount of raffle prizes donated by our wonderful vendors! Even the FFO 20th anniversary cake (which See a complete list of Concours winners on FLU’s website at www.flu.org served 300) had to be delivered to the banquet on a trailer! For the first time, FFO registration was possible over the www.flu.org internet website. The FLU staff working the show was incredible, and I wish to thank them once again for making it possible. There is so much to say about this year’s Fiat Freak Out, but I thought it would be best described by our membership. Jody Farr, our webmaster, set up a post FFO comment site to get the membership’s take on the 20th anniversary event. So instead of me telling you about it, listen to the comments posted by the FLU membership: This was my first Fiat event and I cannot imagine a more perfect weekend. I haven’t been able to decide what I liked most about it. The setting was perfect, the people were beyond friendly and so many Fiats in one place at one time. Best breakfast of any FFO! Good showfield location. Good hotel. The hotel, facilities and meals were top notch. The Biltmore was fantastic! Heck! I had to vote for my competition! It was just continued on page 22 photo by Brett Melancon www.flu.org 2 FLU is spreading, if you would like to start a FLU chapter in your area, please contact John Montgomery for information on how to become an official FLU chapter. As summer fades into autumn, I’m that “nothing is more constant than change.” With the change of seasons upon us, I’ve been contemplating the many changes relating to those of us who cherish our wonderful Italian cars. Fiat’s corporate situation, Freak-Out’s changes in venue and scope, and even the quality and values of our beloved cars have all been moving in some significant new directions over the past several months. Most of it, I’m pleased to say, seems to be for the better. THE NEWS After being absent from the US market for the past twenty years, one might think that Fiat’s current corporate woes would have little significance to enthusiasts in North America. Wrong! If things continue to improve, the return of Fiat’s Alfa Romeo marque…delayed three times in past few years…will take place sometime in the year 2007. This target launch date may be flexible in light of the continuing crisis at Fiat, but make no mistake about it: the good intentions are there. Perhaps the USA and Canada will once-again be able to affordably experience the delight of Italian automotive verve on a daily basis! Originally, Alfa had intended to re-enter the US market with a coupe, a Spider, and a four-door sedan and wagon on a front-drive platform which was to have been co-developed with Saab (which is wholly-owned by General Motors, Fiat’s current partner and possible future owner). Saab pulled out of the venture a while ago, but Alfa is continuing to set its sights on North American shores. While Fiat’s much-publicized problems have brought the once-mighty 104-year-old company to its knees, a concerted effort has continued to restructure the firm with an eye toward future prosperity. After courting a former president of Ford of Europe, Fiat has announced that an Austrian by the name of Herbert Demel will take over as Chief Executive Officer of Fiat Auto sometime in November 2003. Demel will be the first non-Italian ever to lead the company, and brings with him a wealth of experience in the automotive industry which belies his relatively young fifty years of age. He appears to have a great vision of the future and carries a fresh set of ideas which are quite unlike those of the “inbred” Italian Piedmont leadership Fiat has had in the past. He’ll have to face the challenge of learning Italian, but as we Fiat Freaks all know, that’s nothing compare to the challenge of simply fixing an Italian car! While Fiat’s much-publicized problems have brought the once-mighty 104-year-old company to its knees, a concerted effort has continued to restructure the firm with an eye toward future prosperity. Meanwhile, Fiat and General Motors are achieving huge cost savings by sharing parts. Interestingly, GM’s share of Fiat dropped from twenty percent to ten percent last April, and may actually dwindle down to nothing by the fall of 2004 if they don’t choose to contribute to Fiat’s recapitalization efforts. One of Fiat’s biggest problems stems from its dependence on the domestic Italian market. However, huge incursions by foreign automakers, particularly the Japanese, have deeply cut into Fiat’s home-market share. Hmmm...sounds a bit like what the American manufacturers have dealt with in the past decades, does it by Bobb Rayner not? Fiat grabbed just over twenty-seven percent of new vehicle sales in its home country for September 2003, which is its second-lowest share ever. Any American automaker would be overwhelmed with joy to capture that kind of market share in the USA, but in Fiat’s case…where it relies on the home market for almost forty percent of unit sales….they’re looking at nearly half the sales volume to which they are traditionally accustomed! On the upside, the new crop of corporate movers and shakers appear to have the mettle to turn things around within the next few years. The result, we hope, will be affordable Fiat-based Italian cars in North American showrooms. Plans have already been made to sell Brazilian-made Fiats in Mexico, so perhaps a jump across the border will not be far behind! In other Italian car news, Maserati unveiled its sexy new Quattroporte sedan at the Frankfurt auto show in September, and we should see it in North America sometime next summer. Meanwhile, even if the thought of an SUV make your cringe, be forewarned that Pininfarina is now working on an SUV design. Best-known for designing Ferraris and our revered Fiat Spider, Pininfarina has simply faced the fact that they’ve ignored the hot-selling SUV market for too long. Chairman Sergio Pininfarina hasn’t revealed details about the vehicle, but claims it will hit the streets in the not-too-distant future. It could be the ideal tow vehicle for pulling your Spider to the next Fiat Freak Out! THE VIEWS I began this column with comments on change. I’ve noticed that there appears to be an upturn…however slight…in how Fiats and Lancias are perceived amongst contemporary car enthusiasts and in the collector car marketplace. At last May’s continued on page 28 www.flu.org 4 FLU Presents a Sizzling Mid-Summer Show What goes best with Italian food? Italian wine, perhaps, but this past August, Italian CARS were the featured complement to the Italian food and festivities at the annual Automobili Italiane show in Reading, Pennsylvania, USA. This annual FLUsponsored show, open to all Italian marques, began over fifteen years ago as an added attraction alongside the Italian Heritage Festival in Berks County, PA. Scott Hill, a past president of FLU and it’s current treasurer, created this relaxed gathering to give Italian car owners a chance to show off their machines to people who really appreciate them. Despite some sporadic 5 www.flu.org gaps in past year, Automobili Italiane has regained its appeal and participation due to Scott’s unselfish revival efforts. The mid-summer weather of the third weekend in August brought beautiful sunshine and the usual large crowd of festival attendees. While the owners and drivers of nearly fifty show cars were understandably pleased with each other’s company, it was a particular delight to see the faces of and hear comments from people of Italian descent who were visiting the adjoining festival’s celebration of Italian art and culture. Many were former residents and/or citizens of the mother country, and by Bobb Rayner were absolutely thrilled to stroll among the show field covered with cars that brought back memories and a sense of pride in their Italian heritage. While the somewhat usual collection of late-model Spiders and X1/9s dominated the Fiats on the show field, there were also quite a number of rare and unusual Fiat cars as well. Vladimir Pisch drove (at a very leisurely pace, we’re told!) a nicely-restored 1971 Fiat 500L from his home in northern New Jersey, and past FLU president Jim Aitken came all the way from Virginia to display his famous black ‘74 Fiat Spider. As an amazing example of the Italian automotive art, Jim Hendry offered his stunning Fiat 1200 Cabriolet, a car of 1962 vintage that was as perfect in its scarlet color as any of its ilk could have been. The Lancia contingent was represented by a race-prepped Lancia Fulvia owned by Mark Wolff, and a most unusual 1961 Lancia Flaminia sedan was shown by its new owner, Mike Space. This remarkable car, totally un-restored, was purchased by Mike from the original owner, and included most all of the original paperwork such as the owner and shop manuals (featuring hand-drawn illustrations!), and promotional materials from its original date of sale. Among the numerous oddities on this car are the six...count ‘em...six window wipers: two on the front windshield, and four on the backlight, two of which are on the inside of the glass to keep it fog-free in damp weather! Rounding out the unusual Lancias was an un-restored 1971 Lancia Flavia Vignale cabrio presented by Joe Bevacqua. Not to be left out, several Alfa Romeos were in attendance, along with three Ferraris which included a 1998 F355 Spider, a Ferrari Daytona, and a 1969 365GT4 belonging to Sr. Pietro Castiglioni, one of the principal figures on the Italian Heritage Council which conducts the festival each year. Pietro’s car is one of only three of its kind in the world equipped with an automatic transmission. Fans of two-wheeled vehicles were treated to the sight of a Moto-Guzzi motorcycle and a Vespa scooter thrown into the mix! While the car owners found the admiring glances and words of praise rewarding enough, there was also a nice assortment of trophies awarded to the cars featured that day, with winners having been judged by popular vote. Their names appear below, and judging by the reactions of both participants and observers, it’s a safe guess that many others will join these winners when Automobili Italiane returns next summer in a new location! A total of 160,000 units were produced. Autobianchi Runabout (1969) The design project for the Runabout took its inspiration from the motor boat world. As in the case of other prototypes inspired by the design concepts and styling applied to other fields, here once more Bertone took his inspiration from outside the motoring world. The Runabout was in fact inspired by the racing speed boats around at the end of the 1960’s. Despite its unusual look and evident dream car status, the prototype was used as the starting point for the design of the future Fiat X1/9, which was launched a couple of years later. The engine itself was that of the 128, even though the car was presented under the Autobianchi marque. With its pointed shape, generous rollbars hosting the headlamps and the colours chosen by its designer, the car was aimed at a young market. The Runabout is an invitation to fun, stress-free travelling, evoking the sheer joy of driving in places where traffic is no more than a distant memory. The Runabout was presented at the 1969 Turin Motor Show: an original vision of the future which once more attracted the attention of more than a few curious on-lookers. 7 www.flu.org 4 8 7 Fiat X 1/9 (1972-1976) The Fiat X1/9 debuted at the Turin Motor Show in November 1972, immediately earning critical acclaim. The Fiat X1/9 came about to replace the Fiat 850 Spider. On a Fiat 128 base, but with an entirely innovative feature for a Fiat car: a centrally-mounted engine. Nuccio Bertone pressed Fiat management to accept this very sporty solution, and eventually managed to convince them. The Fiat X1/9 reworked the Runabout concept, an innovative Bertone design inspired by the wedge shape of racing speed boats. The Fiat X1/9 is the natural continuation of this concept, with its penetrative wedge shape. The two ridges running along the wings lighten the overall look, and the low bonnet features disappearing headlights, while the rear is cut off. But the most interesting aspect lies in the design of the cockpit, framed by the light front pillar and the rear pillar which functions as a roll-bar. With the hard-top down, the X1/9 goes from coupé to spider, and the top folds away and stows into a front compartment 12 above the luggage. The chassis, derived from the Stratos chassis, is a supporting structure which is particularly robust and safe enough to pass the new safety tests which were about to be introduced in the States. The first version had a 74 Hp 1290 cc. engine (170 km/h). Emerson Fittipaldi, who test-drove it for the magazine Quattroruote, wrote that the X1/9 drives like a Formula One car. The Fiat X1/9 was a hit, and went on to be successful on the American market too. Fiat X 1/9 “Abarth” (1973) As a special rarity, Abarth in 1973 modified an X 1/9 with an 1840 cc 16V engine with 200 Hp, The car was supposed to be used for Rally - unfortunately Fiat’s plans were different, and the Fiat 131 became the Fiat groups Rally car. Apart from the wide arch wings concealing the wide 235/55x13 tires, the Car was equipped with a colossal air intake, to feed the 2 44mm Weber IDF carbs’. 5 1- Autobianchi Runabout (1969) 2- Fiat X 1/9 (1972-1976) 3- Fiat X 1/9 “Abarth” (1973) 4- Fiat X 1/9 US model (1974-1978) 5- Fiat X 1/9, 1300 “Corsa” (1975) 6- Fiat X 1/9 Dallara Silhoutte racer (1975) 7- Fiat X 1/9 “Serie Speciale I” (1976-1978) 8- Fiat X 1/9 “Lido” (1977-1978) 9- Fiat X 1/9 “Five-Speed” (1978-1982) 10- Bertone X1/9 “IN” (1982-1983) 11- Bertone X1/9 “VS” (1983-1987) 12- Bertone X1/9 “S” (1984-1986) 13- Fiat X 1/9 “Sunshine” (1985-1986) 14- Bertone X1/9 “S” (1986-1988) 15- Bertone X1/9 “Special Edition” (1988-1989) 16- Bertone X1/9 “Gran Finale” (1987-1988) 6 9 10 13 Fiat X 1/9 US model (1974-1978) 11 14 In 1974 the Fiat X 1/9 was introduced to the American market, the model was identical with the European model, apart from the slightly larger horns on the bumpers. In 1975 the Fiat X 1/9 was latered on a number of points, to comply with the strict emission regulations, this brought a number of engine changes, as a result the engined now only performed 65 Hp and a top speed at 155 km/h. Most characteristic was though the change from the small wrap-around bumpers, to 2 large - less esthetics - bumpers (2 horizontal bars, connected to the body by 2 hydraulic dampers). In spite of the loss of power, success on the American marked was immediate. Fiat X 1/9, 1300 “Corsa” (1975) In 1975 the model “X 1/9 Corsa” was introduced on the “Salon Automobile de Bruxelles”. It was proposed as a limited 15 edition series for the European market. The cars main characteristic were a large spoiler on the rear trunk, widened wings, hardtop in the body colour, and it was fitted with magnesium rims with Bertone logo. On the doors the writing said “X1/9 CORSA” in capitals and “FIAT BERTONE” in small capitals. The car was nevertheless equipped as the standard series, despite the sporty race design. Fiat X 1/9 Dallara Silhouette racer (1975) The Fiat X1/9 Dallara went on show at the 1975 “Paris Motor Show” The Fiat X1/9 Dallara was the Turin company’s answer to the race car market, destined for 16 a packed sporting schedule in Group 5 (Silhouette) of the World Sportscar Championships, with its creator behind the wheel. Dallara, an internationally known, highly experienced engineer, opted for the X1/9, in the belief that, for both its design and economic characteristics, it would be capable of turning in an impressive sporting performance. In fact the X1/9 Dallara retains the same layout as the original model, apart from a few modifications to the suspensions and engine. The engine is a four-cylinder - 16 v - 192 Hp, 1289 cc. The design of the body visually accentuates the sporty character continued on page 21 www.flu.org 8 Fun Had at Bruce’s Anuual Spook Out by Thad Kirk Bruce’s Parts Bin opened up shop and held it’s annual “Spook Out” in support of the Delaware Valley Chapter of FLU. It’s a chance for people to get together and enjoy each other’s company and their cars. Bruce ordered up some excellent weather! Sunny mid 70’s with beautiful fall foliage colors. Bruce, and staff (wife and daughter), had a nice setup of food at the ‘Bin’ for those who were hungry. Lots of great people and cars. Cars from NJ, DE, NY, MD, PA, etc. We had a great turn out! If you’ve never visited Bruce’s Bin, then you’re missing a treasure. Bruce has parts scattered all over the place that even he doesn’t know about. Saturday was sort of like a self serve Fiat parts store. Half the fun is finding the stuff Bruce doesn’t even know he has! Look for his annual open house in the spring held about April 1. This event is referred to as ‘Fools Out’. They speak to us softly in a world that shouts the cold reality of routine. Perhaps it is simply the foolish that dare to dream anymore? Can we actually reach beyond the ordinary to the extraordinary? (Say yes.) If not, check your pulse. This summer we made the choice to follow our hearts in pursuit of a closely held dream. Italian cars from your garage and mine vacated their quiet sanctuary, rolling cross-town or cross-country toward an appointment with automotive history. Some drove west, others went east, still others headed south while a few took flight north. Most of us had little to say to those who didn’t understand; we simply walked out of our daily schedule and got into that special Italian car. We pressed onward from all points to a special meeting place, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. It was a long journey that cost a a fair amount of money, time and trouble. The uninitiated and ignorant shake their heads all the while, never understanding what’s the big deal about the “sweet song of an overhead cam engine, wind in the hair, top down I don’t give a damn what you think” great adventure of Italian motoring. We’re going to the big 20th anniversary show; come hell or high water. Lifelong Fiat enthusiasts leave behind decades of misspent youth, dogged perseverance, setbacks and heartbreaks, for the ultimate triumph to arrive at a special car show with a beloved Italian car. For every hour of pleasure behind the wheel, there was 10 times more hours devoted to engine work, brake work, paint-work and restoration work. Dreams often leave behind a trail of trouble, tears, red ribbons of receipts, and the incredibly slow progress over time, only yielding to resounding victory by shear resolve. This July, the joy of the Italian motoring experience was once again validated from the wheels beneath the driver’s seat. Every car that arrived in Asheville was a show winner because they rose to the challenge to be present for this record breaking event. Through it all, we never complained about the distance of the journey… there was but one destination and one dream… Fiat Freak Out 2003 in Asheville. The largest gathering of it’s kind, featuring classic Fiat, Lancia, Alfa and other Italian sports cars. Once again it’s time to elect three new club members to the FLU Board of Directors. The FLU Board consists of 11 members, each serving a three-year term. Every year, one third of the Board is up for re-election. This year, we have three positions and five new challengers. The membership may choose to vote for three of the following candidates: Evan Statman, Sam Germana, Mike Greer, Woody Woodson, or John Erskine. In addition, all FLU officer positions are voted on yearly, however, the call for nominations was not returned, so no challengers for these positions have made their intentions known. Therefore, you will have a choice of either the incumbent or a write-in candidate of your choice. Spaces will be provided below. In order to vote, you must be a FLU member in good standing. You can identify yourself by providing your membership ID number and postal/zip code. Your ID number can be found on the Ricambi mailing label, or you may look it up online at www.flu.org . Please note that your identity is only used to ensure that the ballot box is not stuffed. This data will not be disseminated to anyone within the club and your vote will remain anonymous. All of the nominated board candidates have had the opportunity to respond to the following three questions. Please read the responses in order to get to know the candidate so you may make a good choice for FLU Board participation. 1. Why do you want to dedicate three years as a member of the FLU Board? 2. What are the top three ideas (or issues) that you intend to cover during your service to the membership? 3. What sets you apart from other candidates? 19 www.flu.org Name: Evan J Statman Chapter affiliation: FLO-FLU Founder Email address: [email protected] FLU Member since: May 2003 Italian Car(s) Owned: 1984 Pininfarina Azzurra Spider, 1988 Bertone (RIP 1996) 1. I would like to dedicate the next three years to the FLU Board to provide more structure and resources for individual chapters by using state of the art technologies. I believe that the three years is an appropriate term length to enable change but maintain continuity. 2. 1) Improved internal structure with more defined roles for the board of directors, officers and chapters. 2) Additional chapter development activities and materials for new chapters. 3) A complete marketing plan to showcase the organization outside the current membership to the Italian car owners of North America. 3. My qualification that sets me apart from other candidates is that I am new. I started the newest FLU Chapter FLO FLU. My perspective is fresh and excited and I rely on technology to achieve my goals at minimal actual dollar cost. I also think we should remember that we are doing this for the love the cars and the fun of it all. ___________________________ Name: John R Erskine National Capitol Area FLU (Wash DC, MD, VA) [email protected] FLU Member since 1999 Owned (or own): 124TC Estate, 1979 Mirafiori wagon, two 1973 124 Spiders, two 1979 Spider 2000’s, and a 1971 124 Spider 1. I would like to serve on the FLU board to actively promote the organization, work collectively with the other directors, and expand FLU membership and activities. 2. Three ideas I am interested in promoting are: working with other Fiat regional groups to ensure FLU’s expansion/coordination in a greater national presence; creating a framework of guidance, organization and direction for local FLU clubs; and bringing more Fiat owners into Fiat Lancia Unlimited. 3. (My qualifications are no different than those of other candidates) Creative, enthusiastic, fair-minded and interested in FLU. Love all things Italian; especially Fiat Spiders. Professional sports car restoration specialist; hobby is the restoration and repair of Spiders. Co-organizer of the Fiat Rescue League, chartered to keep Fiats out of the crusher. Able to dedicate time to this endeavor. ___________________________ Name: Sam Germana Chapter affiliation: Northeast Coast Email address: [email protected] FLU Member since: 5/1/1987 Italian Car(s) Owned: 1981 Fiat Spider (Original Owner) 1982 Ferrari Mondial 1. I have had the benefits of membership for over 15 years. For the Fiat Freak Out alone it was worth joining. It was through the hard work of others that I was able to enjoy club membership. I am ready to make my own contribution. 2. 1) Expand membership. To do so would bring in diversity of owners, continual fresh ideas, and help ensure a thriving club. Use Fiat Freak Out (FFO) and the newsletter as a platform. At FFO, for example, I think board members and officers should make efforts to reach out to the membership, welcoming them and listening to what they say. 2) Bring in ALL Italian Marques. FLU is already the least elitist, and most inclusive of groups. Let’s build upon that, having events with other Italian Marques. Ideas include local rallies and gatherings. We could team up with charities, raising money for agreed upon causes via rallies and shows. This would raise the club’s profile in a positive way. Even informal “runs” are good social gatherings. 3) Delegate. Spectators watch, participants make things happen. The accomplishments thus far of the officers & board have been amazing. Let’s assign help to the membership committee, and expand roles such as those organizing FFO. Have greeters for “newbies” at FFO. For every idea, I bet there are people who could jump in to help make them happen, and improve upon them. 3. A FLU member since 1987, I have owned a total of 5 Italian cars: Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Ferrari. I have been an administrator for 20 years with a degree in management, and a lawyer for 7. I have the training and experience to motivate people and make things happen. These attributes combine to make for a useful contributor to FLU. ___________________________ Name: Mike Greer Chapter Affiliation: Roamin’ Chariots Email address: [email protected] home or [email protected] work FLU member since: 1999 Italian Car(s) owned: 1979 Spider 2000 1) Dedicating three years to the FLU board is important to me because I feel very strongly about the need for a strong national organization for Fiat/Lancia automobiles. It’s important in my opinion that FLU continues to grow and expand, and to do that means representation from chapters that can provide a different perspective to the FLU Board. I enjoy the club and want to share the views of new chapters. 2) My top three issues are: 1- FLU as a national organization. 2- The need of the national organization to help and provide guidance to old and new chapters alike. This would include guidelines for “club” events, guidelines or suggestions for chapter organization, services for local chapters, and lists of potential members for local chapters. 3) Better communication across the network of chapters. 3. My qualifications include owning a Fiat Spider for the past 30 years, beyond that, I have been active in other national organizations such as the Catalina National Sailing Association, where I served as fleet captain. I can use this experience and knowledge to help reach the goals mentioned above and the goals of FLU and it’s member chapters and individuals. I’ve also been active with my chapter of FLU, organizing and helping with a number of events such as MOFLO and the Fall FIAT. ___________________________ Name: Woody Woodson Chapter affiliation: Detroit Chapter Founder, 1978 Email address: [email protected] FLU Member since: 1978 Italian Car(s) Owned: Many over 33 years. 1. As a previous Board member, I would like to return to the Board to continue my push in helping FLU to maintain it’s position as a pipeline to Fiat ownership, and it’s continued climb to the return of popularity. 2. (A.) Make sure that all chapters have a voice in their concerns of the club, seeing all chapters have a liaison to be heard by the National. (B.) To find more ways to restore a higher membership level. (C.) To maintain or achieve a better relationship with other Italian Car Clubs. 3. The items that set me apart from the other candidates is, I had formed the Detroit Club in 1978. Promoted the Detroit Chapter to become the first Chapter to become part of FLU. Have been the President of the Detroit Chapter, and the Detroit AROC Chapter during the same periods for two years running. Have also maintained a Board position with FLU National and he Detroit AROC Chapter during the same periods. Have owned and driven Italian cars for the last 33 years. Have been a Board member of the Detroit AROC for the last six years, and was just elected to the AROC Board for the 2004 year. Have been a liaison for the support of each club for and during club activities. I am well aware of both local chapter and National operations. The knowledge I have gained at the local level applies equally at the National level. This knowledge makes me better prepared to see both sides of the deliberation and make the best decisions. And last, I have head on-the challenge of maintaining a Fiat Club in the Motor City for 25 years; with Detroit being the headquarters of the big three auto makers. Official FFO voting ballot on back page of this issue of RICAMBI www.flu.org 20 continued from page 8 of the model, while inside the car is an entirely new safety feature: upholstery in F.P.T., the same fire-retardant material used for the suits of the Formula 1 drivers. Fiat X 1/9 “Series Speciale I” (1976-1978) In 1976 the “Serie Speciale I” was launched, it was characterized by a “ladder pattern” decor alongside, this together with a large PU-plastic front spoiler. Internal it was fitted with new higher back seats, with a striped design fabric. 1976 was also the year when it officially was introduced as a right hand driven version to the market in United Kingdom, till then only a number (approximately 30) had been converted to right hand drive by Radbourne Racing. Fiat X 1/9 “Lido” (1977-1978) As the last of the 1300 series the “Lido” was launched in 1978, it was only available in black. The Lido model had a theme of black and white, therefore it had chromed bumpers, and white interior. Fiat X 1/9 “Five-Speed” (1978-1982) With the end of the 1300 series, the X 1/9 “Five-Speed” was introduced on the 1978 “Autosalon Birmingham”. The Introduction of the X 1/9 “Five-Speed”” was the most significant change ever done in the history of the X 1/9. The most significant changes was - as the name says - the introduction of the Fait Ritmo/Strada known power train consisting of the 1498 cc engine performing 86 Hp, and the 5 speed transmission. Visually it was changed with large allow bumpers in the full width of the car, along with a higher engine lid for the new higher engine. Inside the interior also had a make over with new dash, and seats. 21 www.flu.org Bertone X1/9 “IN” (1982-1983) Bertone X1/9 “S” (1986-1988) As the first model after Bertone took over the entire production of the X 1/9 “IN” model was introduced to the market in the spring of 1982. The model was characterized by the two-tone paintwork, and the “IN” decor on the roll-bar. The interior had gone trough a make over in this fase as well, and better fabric gave it a quality boost, a special characteristic inside, was that the carpet was bright red! In the spring of 1986 the new “S”, model was introduced to the market, this model had sideskirts and Speedline SP 116A rims with 185/60x13 low profile tires, another significant change to this model was that the engine lid was in the body colour instead of the usual black. The model came in two variants, a carb’ model, and an injection model, the latter was lowered some 40mm. Bertone X1/9 “VS” (1983-1987) Bertone X1/9 “Special Edition” (1988-1989) In the spring of 1983 the “VS” model was introduced to the market as the replacement of the “In” model, the only significant change was new Speedline SL 082 rims, and new colour schemes where the lower color always was metallic Charcoal #900, the roll-bar decor now wrote “X 1-9” vertically. In 1988 the last official series hit the continental European market - Bertone X1/9 1500 “Special Edition”, the car were built in 1985 - 1986 and was US models, rebuilt to the the continental Europe, the last model were sold as late as in 1989. Bertone X1/9 “S” (1984-1986) In the spring of 1984 the “S” model was introduced to the market, the only significant change was new Cromodora CD 179 rims, and new colour schemes where the vertically divider between the two colours now was moved up to just under the window line, another feature was that now it had mirrors on both sides. Fiat X 1/9 “Sunshine” (1985-1986) In the spring of 1985 the “Sunshine” model was introduced to the market, and again this time only minor changes in equipment, like new materials in the interior, other rims, and new colour schemes. Bertone X1/9 “Gran Finale” (1987-1988) In the spring of 1987 the last model ever hits the British market, as the “Gran Finale” is introduced. This model had a carb’ engine, and the rims were now from O.Z., the bumpers were not black as on the previous models, and it had a rear spoiler. This model was available in just two different colours, Mica Red or Mica Blue. Aircondition was standard in the model, as well as Alcantara fabric interior. WOW! It made me proud to be a Fiat owner that day! OK, everyday! It was our first FFO and we loved it! The silent auction was great. The location was perfect and the cars were beautiful. Congratulations on an excellent turn-out. And you got Dwight Varnes to speak! FFO03 was great. Good Friends, Good Location, Good Food, Lots to do! WORKERBEES, WORKER BEES; MY HATS OFF TO THE WORKER BEES! What a great job they did to put on one really great Freak Out! THANK YOU, THANK YOU! I don’t recall ever going to a better organized car club event. I’m looking forward to 2004 and I am sure another great get together with the nicest car club people around. It was really well done. I had a wonderful time and it seemed like everyone else was on cloud 9 too. I will certainly attend the next one, which I understand may again be in Asheville. Please let the club that put on the autocross know that they did a perfect job. It was very well organized. This was my first FFO and I hope to return next year. Completely amazing! We had a great time and were very happy to have attended. Everyone who organized it did an outstanding job. Kudos to Bob Rayner for keeping his speech short! LOL! Raffle took too long. The Freak Out was fabulous. It was the biggest and best ever. Organizers, be proud. I was knocked out by the large number of first timers. This bodes well for the future of the club. I met some great people and can’t wait till next year. Great location offering more than a show. Thanks for making my wife and I welcome. We both felt that everyone was friendly and helpful. We made some new friends while there. I was on the organizing committee for FFO 2001 so I know what goes into it. You guys did a super job and the event ran seamlessly which tells me your prep was excellent! The Biltmore venue and mountains as a backdrop made for a scenic and relaxing locale. I recommend to any Fiat Lancia owners I meet that they join FLU and experience the one of a kind event. Fiat and Lancia forever! Should repeat another year at same location. We are going back to Asheville on Friday, July 16th thru Sunday, July 18th, 2004! Last year, we had to share the hotel with other groups, next year we are going to book the ENTIRE Sunspree Resort, all 250 rooms! This will be the largest Fiat Freak Out ever. We will pull out all the stops for this one! The hotel will be 100% Italian Car heaven! Don’t dare miss it! Book rooms now at last year’s rates ($93/night)! Call Sunspree’s at 1-800-733-3211 or visit web at www.sunspree.com Counterpoints: Please consider making nametags FLU logo and the name tags bigger, since many of us are wanting to meet people we’ve talked to but never met. I didn’t get ballots for the concourse judging... Is it because I did not bring a car? (Answer: Yes.) Don’t apologize for having lots of raffle prizes. People wouldn’t buy the tickets if there wasn’t a lot to be won. I miss the small club atmosphere of a few years back though. These $20.00 dinners, etc. are too expensive for my budget. What’s wrong with burgers and beer? My only disappointment was in winning second place. Just wait until next year! Parking areas should be dedicated to FLU members. Would like to see the incorporation of at least one “hands-on” tech session or more than one so people could choose one or the other. My thought was that some sort of badge or patch be given to every autocross participant and would provide some tangible recognition and a momento of the event. Who would have thought a vintage Fiat would ever be offered as a coveted prize? In checking internet price guides and collector car publications, values seem to be rising a bit for Fiats and Lancias IF they are in pristine condition. At FLU enthusiast events like Fiat Freak Out, I’ve also noticed a definite improvement in the variety, condition. and quality of cars brought to the various events. Even our fellow Fiat Freaks are looking better than ever, despite the fact that we’re aging as quickly as our cars! In 2003, no part of FLU’s operation has seen bigger changes than this past summer’s edition of Fiat Freak Out. In its twentieth year, FFO2003 brought not only a change of venue, but also a change in record numbers of participants, quality and scope You may also register online at www.flu.org of cars presented, and variety of activities. As a life-long enthusiast, I have had the good fortune to attend some of the top automotive events in the world. I’ve been to the famous Pebble Beach concourse d’Elegance, Concorso Italiano in Monterrey, the Club Nazionale X1/9 “Raduno” in Italy, and various other top-flight car enthusiast events the world over. However, NONE of them have been any better in quality and organization than what our fellow club officers have accomplished in administering and conducting Fiat Freak Out 2003. Witness the last mega-issue of RICAMBI, the much-admired FLU internet website, and all of the other remarkable aspects of Club Fiat-Lancia Unlimited, and you’ll see that this is truly one of the finest organizations of its kind in the world. It’s all due to the selfless dedication of volunteer members in both official and supporting positions. Even amongst the rank-and-file membership, certain individuals are continuing to form local FLU chapters and contribute to the mutual enjoyment of our cherished Fiat and Lancia automobiles. With such dedication and manifest enthusiasm, club FLU can look forward to a fun-filled and enriching future. Mille Grazie to all! Love you….love your show! (Note: Bobb Rayner will once-again be appearing in the following cities as a product specialist/presenter on the North American International Auto Show circuit for the 2003-2004 season: Greensboro NC, Miami, Hartford CT, Washington DC, Detroit, Harrisburg PA, Chicago, Raleigh NC, Cleveland, New Orleans, and New York. FLU membersattending auto shows in these cities are encouraged to stop by the Lincoln-Mercury exhibit to say “Ciao” in person to the “Fiat Freak!”) ✄ COPY OR CLIP AND MAIL WITH CHECK PAYABLE TO FLU ✄ FIAT LANCIA UNLIMITED (FLU) MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION Name______________________________________________ Spouse_______________________________________________ Address_________________________________________________________________________________________________ City/State/Zip_____________________________________________________________________________________________ Telephone (H) ______________________ (W) ______________________ ITALIAN AUTOS OWNED (Year, Make, Model) _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________e-mail address____________________________ How did you hear about FLU?____________________________________Please indicate your interests:______________________ ____________________________________________❐ Technical Dues: $29.00 per year (Canadian members $35.00 US).
