Runaway Intervention Program
Ten years ago, Laurel Edinburgh, a nurse practitioner at Midwest Children’s
Resource Center, began to see a number of girls who had been sexually exploited.
The girls were runaways and were quickly slipping through the cracks. Half of
them were not attending school and their truancies went unreported. Many were
staying with gang members and being used in exchange for drug money. The
majority of these girls were only 12-14 years old.
In 2003, Laurel decided to do something about it and applied for a small grant
from CHA. By 2005, the program she founded, known as the Ramsey County
Runaway Intervention Program, began to operate within the clinic itself.
Fast forward to today and Laurel has amazing stories to tell and statistics to prove
the success of the program.
The pregnancy rate for the girls who are in the program is 2.5% - lower than
Minnesota’s average rate of 9% - and significantly lower than the average rate for
girls who have been sexually exploited. In addition, the rate of substance abuse
has gone down while school attendance has risen. These girls are more open to
participating in job opportunities.
Although it is a very hard story to tell, and a painful one to hear, it is even more
difficult to imagine the reality of this happening within our own communities.
CHA decided to make the Runaway Intervention Program its Fund-A-Need for
2014. We are proud to say that we have raised over $65,000 to date and know
that we can now save even more children and their families from being victims of
their past. By working together we can create a brighter future.

Thank you! It was another magical night at the Storyland Gala! Peggy Radio and
Shelley Palmquist, co-chairs of this year’s event, along with the Gala Committee
created an enchanted evening. The Charitable Giving Committee planned a
beautiful VIP Reception and brought us all of our wonderful sponsors. The Silent
Auction Committee worked tirelessly and presented us with a record number of
items! Thank you to each member of the 2014 Gala Committee! We are sorry if you
missed it because it was a wonderful way to raise funds for our programs and we all
had a great time!
This annual event allows us to continue to fund programs that might not otherwise
exist. As I told our guests at the Gala, there would be no programs if not for all of our
loyal and generous supporters.
Let me again say thank you from those families who would not otherwise be able
to afford medical attention for the children, from runaways who find someone does
care. Thank you from those who have the comfort of a Chaplain on weekends
and evenings, and those who find solace on our rooftop garden. Thank you from
researchers, teenage moms and emotionally vulnerable children who could not
otherwise afford treatment for their mental health needs. Thank you from those
calmed by the sound of music therapy and the companionship of animal assisted
therapy.
Our Fund-A-Need this year, the Runaway Intervention Program was a huge success.
You have helped save the children who are victims of sexual abuse. Your support
will bring hope to these children and their families and save them from leading lives
of pain and neglect. Thank you. For all these things and more we thank you.
We proudly awarded Dr. Alan L. Goldbloom our “Making a Difference” award. His
unwavering, longstanding support has allowed CHA to continue and thrive as his
years of service unfolded. Mayor Chris Coleman proclaimed October 25, 2014 “Dr.
Alan L. Goldbloom Day” for his contributions to Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of
Minnesota.
As we start to wind down this 81st year of Children’s Hospital Association we are
gearing up for the future. The Finance Committee is hard at work planning budgets
and program selections for next year, our Nominating Committee is bringing in new
members and planning committees for 2015! We begin again in the new year to
raise funds for the programs that make it possible to CHAnge kids’ lives.

Swing for the Children
North Oaks Guild II
On Monday, September 29th the Woodbury guild
hosted it’s tenth annual “Swing for the Children” golf
tournament at Oak Marsh Golf Course.
The event was attended by 113 golfers, and 4 more
joined for the dinner and live/silent auction part of the
evening. Total proceeds raised from the event was
$10,428.43! It was the largest turnout to date and a
very successful and fantastic day raising funds and
awareness for CHA.
North Oaks Guild II members are pictured as they
anticipated the start of their September 2014
Rummage Sale that generated income over $140,000
during the two-day sale. Proceeds will help support
programs at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of
Minnesota. The next sale will be September 19 & 20,
2015. There will be a spring donation drop-off with date
to be determined. The Guild is grateful for its many
volunteers, donors and financial supporters. For more
information about North Oaks Guild II go to

Soup’s on for Kids
The Night Owls Guild held their annual “Soup’s On
For Kids” dinner on September 25th at Incarnation
Lutheran Church in Shoreview. Approximately 120
people were in attendance to enjoy the delicious
soups and homemade desserts. A
silent auction was held and our
famous homemade caramels were a
sell out. We wish to thank the many
people who attended. It was a fun
evening which provided money for
a wonderful cause!
In September, the Mahtomedi Guild of CHA took a tour
of the hospital. Included in the tour was a walk through
of the CHA Storyland Rooftop Garden.

2014 Home Tour and Boutique
Making a list and checking it twice, we want to take
this opportunity to thank those who helped make the
North Oaks Home Tour & Boutique a great success!
A heartfelt thank you to the homeowners who opened
their homes for this year’s theme “Home for the
Holidays.” Motivated by their compassion for sick kids
and their families; they agreed to the hustle and bustle
of decorators, designers and volunteers in their home
for 3 days. Thank you.
Hammerschlagen was a crowd favorite, but there was
also bag toss and a
wonderful silent auction
that attracted many. The
event was a sellout, yet
again!
CHA office Staff, Sue and
Natalie were also there!
Guild President’s and Treasurer’s Brunch
Guild 1 members successfully hosted the 2014 annual
fund raising event for Children’s Hospitals, working with
community designers, vendors and artisans at both
the boutique and the house tour. With the help of
many Guild 2 volunteers and countless other helpers,
we pulled together for a great community cause
benefiting the Children’s Hospital Association. Thank
you to everyone who helped to make this event
successful!
CHA Guild Council hosted the annual President’s and
Treasurer’s Brunch on November 15th at Midland Hills
Country Club.
Guilds officers came together to share ideas and discuss
how to attract new members and continue the legacy of
raising funds for the children in our community.
The morning concluded with a slideshow of photos from
various Guild events throughout the past year.
