teaching better dentistry
since 1985
Teaching better dentistry is at the forefront of all
we do. It permeates our people, and it characterizes
our relationships with our customers. Call us with
any product or technique question, and a friendly
technical sales representative will walk you through
a solution. Read any communication from us – a flyer,
a catalogue, a newsletter, a technique or product
article – and you’ll find clinically proven techniques
and tips. At tradeshows, you can participate in the
demonstration of how a product solves a clinical
challenge. At seminars and hands-on courses, you’ll
find at the helm, well-respected clinicians who share
our vision of better dentistry.

WINTER CLINIC PROGRAM
WHO WE ARE – THE TORONTO ACADEMY OF DENTISTRY
As early as 1890 Toronto dentists had formed as a group called the Toronto Dental Society. This
organization would reinvent themselves in 1906 to “form a society on a basis more suited to the demands of a
profession of busy men and women in the most progressive city in a progressive country”. This group continued
to thrive over the years and would subsequently become the Toronto Academy of Dentistry on May 8, 1922.
They shared office space and staff with the RCDS and the annual fee for membership was $5.00. What was once
called Clinic Night was formally changed to Winter Clinic for the meeting on December 8, 1937. The Academy
had in fact been holding spring and winter clinics for many years before this, attracting several hundred dentists
to each meeting.
As an ODA member who practices in Toronto and belongs to: North Toronto Dental Society, Toronto East
Dental Society, Toronto Central Dental Society, or the West Toronto Dental Society you are automatically a
member of the Toronto Academy of Dentistry and part of this long heritage.
The Toronto Academy of Dentistry draws from the four Toronto component societies for its Board members
and Committee members. The Toronto Academy of Dentistry is the four Toronto component societies and all that
it does is on behalf of these societies.

WINTER CLINIC PROGRAM
GREETINGS FROM…
Welcome from the Association of
Dental Technologists of Ontario
(ADTO)
Lisa Citton Battel President
Jason Robson, RDT President
On behalf of Association of Dental Technologists of Ontario,
its board of directors and members, I am pleased to welcome
you to the Toronto Academy of Dentistry 78th Annual Winter
Clinic.
At industry events, the discussion inevitably comes
around to where dentistry is headed. How are the rapid
strides in technology impacting us as dental professionals? As
technology continues to advance, it will continue to assists
us in creating a better product, however every restoration is
still unique. Certain criteria must still be met to ensure the
success and safety of the patient -- this is something that
only a registered dental technologist (RDT) can provide. As
regulated health professionals, the RDT has a very important
role in protecting the public in their oral health needs.
I look forward to meeting you and encourage you to stop
by our booth to better understand how an RDT is an integral
part of the oral health puzzle.
Welcome from the Ontario Dental
Hygienists’ Association (ODHA)
Sheniza Blackburn, RDH President
On behalf of the Ontario Dental Hygienists` Association, it
is my pleasure to welcome you to the Toronto Academy of
Dentistry’s 78th Annual Winter Clinic. The Academy and
the 2015 Winter Clinic Committee have brought together a
remarkable selection of speakers and learning opportunities
for all oral health practitioners to enjoy.
As primary health care professionals, dental hygienists
value the principles of lifelong learning and continuous
improvement. Winter Clinic provides an opportunity to learn,
network and socialize with colleagues.
While visiting the exhibit floor, please drop by the ODHA
booth to share your thoughts. Enjoy the conference.

Welcome from the Dental Industry
Association of Canada (DIAC)
Toronto Academy of Dentistry | 78th Annual Winter Clinic
The Dental Industry Association of Canada, its Board of
Directors and Members, would like to congratulate you on
your 78th Annual Winter Clinic!
DIAC is proud to be part of your history, and excited to
represent the industry in creating a future that meets the
common goals of the academy and our members. I will take
a moment to share two of DIAC’s priorities, and how they are
relevant to the Winter Clinic:
1 Convention Success – The way we connect and learn in the
dental industry continues to evolve, and we need to evolve
with it to foster education and relationships to help the
industry thrive. By working together with the Winter Clinic,
DIAC will continue to ensure we are ready for the future
together.
2P
rogress against eliminating non compliant product We continue to see this product every day and must work
together to ensure only product that has been safely
produced and distributed makes its way into Canadian
trade shows and dental offices. We share a common desire
to protect Canadian patients and dentists so they never
need to question their safety when it comes to dentistry.
DIAC continues to be a growing voice in dentistry and we
invite you to visit the DIAC booth and the booths of all our
member companies. Our members work hard on education,
demonstrations and promotions to make the time spent with
us informative and valuable for the profession.
On behalf of the entire Board, I wish everyone a very
successful meeting and we look forward to seeing you on
the floor!
Welcome from Toronto Central
Dental Society

GREETINGS FROM…
Welcome from North Toronto
Component Society
Welcome from Toronto East
Dental Society
Dr. Sheldon Cooper President
On behalf of the North Toronto Dental Society , welcome
to the Toronto Academy of Dentistry’s annual Winter Clinic.
The Winter Clinic is an outstanding venue for continuing
education, looking at new products and socializing with
other professionals like yourself.
Your North Toronto Dental Society Executive recognizes
the value of the annual Winter Clinic and encourages your
participation in its exceptional program. This year NTDS
dentists who attend the Winter Clinic will be entitled to
a free registration for our annual Honours and Awards
June dinner. This event is heavily subsidized and the value
of this subsidy is almost double the fifty dollar subsidy which
we have provided to Winter Clinic attendees in the past.
Dinner attendees will receive a free emergency drug / refill kit
for their offices.
Dentists from north Toronto are welcomed to participate
at our society meetings, our continuing education evenings
and at our annual Honours and Awards Night in June. Our
Oral Health Month Initiative, whereby dentists are invited to
visit schools to discuss oral health with the students, is a very
enjoyable way to present dentistry to our community.
We had a Raptors evening this past January and
hope to arrange it again for 2016. As well, we had a CPR
recertification this past March and hope to arrange this again
for 2016. This event, as well as many of our other continuing
education events and meetings offer significant subsidies to
encourage participation of North Toronto dentists.
More programs are anticipated for the future and we
welcome your suggestions and input. There will be e mails
promoting our programs so check your emails and e blasts
from the ODA. If you would like more information about
the North Toronto Dental Society or would like to attend a
meeting please contact me at [email protected]

to welcome you to the Toronto Academy of Dentistry’s 78’th
Annual Winter Clinic. After playing host to the nations of
North and South America for the Pan Am Games of 2015,
Toronto continues to roll out the red carpet for another
world class event. As one of the largest single day dental

Managing Temporomandibular Disorders
in the Dental Office
Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a term that describes
the manifestation of pain and/or dysfunction of the
temporomandibular joint and its associated structures.
Clinically-significant TMD affects approximately five percent
of the population and can be treated using non-surgical and/
or surgical techniques. Dental professionals are integral in
the diagnosis and management of TMD and should have
an appreciation for the available techniques (and their
limitations) so as to know when and how to properly treat
TMD. The purpose of this lecture is to review diagnostic
criteria and current conservative, medical and surgical
therapies in order to help guide attendees in managing the
challenging TMD patient in the dental office.

Synopsis
Though a common phrase in the business vernacular,
clinician Annette Poizner suggests that those familiar words
– sign here – point to a hidden truth: embedded within
any given signature are signs – symbols and marks – that
potentially reveal personality style, interests or behavioural
patterns of the writer. Right here, as close as the nearest
signed consent form, is a source of information about
patients that can promote better understanding and rapport.
By analyzing signatures of prominent celebrities, participants
will learn easily recognizable graphic features and their
interpretations, acquiring entry-level graphology skills.
Learning Objectives
Participants will learn relevant interpretive principles, will
recognize meaningful graphic features in handwriting
and acquire an ability to apply graphological interpretive
principles, thereby generating tentative conclusions about
writers on the basis of handwriting.
About the Speaker
Annette Poizner, MSW, Ed.D., RSW, is a Columbia-trained
psychotherapist in private practice, a community educator
and author of Clinical Graphology: An Interpretive Manual
for Mental Health Practitioners. Her doctoral dissertation,
completed at the University of Toronto, explored the use of
graphology (handwriting analysis) within psychotherapy.
She has presented on the psychology of handwriting at the
annual conference of the Canadian Psychological Association
and in a range of other academic and professional contexts.
She is a cofounder of the Milton H. Erickson Institute of
Toronto and specializes in projective personality assessment,
Ericksonian psychotherapy and hypnosis. Her work has been

Synopsis
Conventional cementation of implant-supported prostheses
has been popular for many years. Proponents of this
methodology have long held that this approach has several
important advantages to alternative techniques. This
presentation will provide an in-depth discussion of these
advantages – and demonstrate their inaccuracy with specific
reference to modern peer-reviewed literature. The purpose
of this lecture is to provide an evidence-based starting
point for the clinical restoration of implant-supported
prostheses. Recommendations will be made regarding
current alternatives to cementation when the implant
position presents a challenge to simple screw-retention. Examples of these techniques will be discussed, specifically
including the dental laboratory’s role.
Learning Objectives
1Understand the historical background underlying the
longstanding controversy regarding screw- vs. cementretention of implant supported prostheses;
2Recognize the clinical presentations of patients whose
dental implants require an alternative approach to
straightforward screw retention; and,
3Become familiar with these alternative approaches to
cementation and how to employ them clinically.

CLINICAL ORAL
PATHOLOGY REVIEW
AFTERNOON SESSION
Synopsis
The current landscape of psychiatric illness reveals that one
in five adult North Americans will suffer from some form of
mental illness during their lifetime. A far greater percentage
will not receive treatment until many years after the onset
of illness. A recent W.H.O. report has now stated that
depression will become the leading cause of health
impairment worldwide by the year 2020. What really
separates mental illness from other diseases is that it does
not discriminate on the basis of age, race, economic status
or gender. As dental health care practitioners, it is incumbent
upon us to improve and enhance our knowledge of this often
complex yet “silent” aspect of a patient’s medical history and
acquire an appreciation and understanding of our patient’s
overall psychological health as it impacts and influences
our ability to provide optimal oral health care. Medications
used to treat various forms of mental illness can interact with
drugs used in dentistry. Oral health problems can arise as
manifestations of mental illness as well as being side effects
(e.g. xerostomia) of numerous psychiatric medications. Finally,
psychiatric disorders often lead to decreased compliance and/
or consent for preventive oral care and decreased ability to
obtain or tolerate oral health treatment. The end result can
be truly devastating, particularly for younger patients. This
presentation will enhance the knowledge and understanding
of chronic mental illness on the part of the entire dental
treatment team and be directly relevant to on-going daily
front-line patient care.
Learning Objectives
1Demonstrate how mental health and oral health are closely
intertwined and how one can directly impact the other.
2Comprehend how medications used to treat various forms of
mental illness can interact with other drugs used in dentistry.
3Understand how oral health problems can arise as
manifestations of mental illness as well as being side
effects of numerous psychiatric medications.
4Understand the disabilities and stigma associated with
mental illness as well as enhancing one’s knowledge of the
various psychiatric disorders so as to be better prepared to
provide dental treatment on a highly individualized basis.

Synopsis
Clinicians are faced with making treatment decisions for
millions of people with diabetes every day. Successful
medical management of people with diabetes requires
optimal oral health and diabetes is a significant risk factor for
periodontitis and other oral complications. This session will
review the available clinical, epidemiologic and basic science
evidence supporting this bi-directional relationship. Clinical
strategies paramount to successful dental management
of people with diabetes will be developed based on an
improved understanding of diabetes and its medical
management. The impact of poor oral health on people with
pre-diabetes and diabetes will be discussed. The results of
periodontal intervention studies will be reviewed.
Synopsis
The links between oral and overall health in women will be
reviewed. Women are more susceptible to certain dental
and medical conditions throughout their life. Oral changes
that occur during puberty, pregnancy and menopause will
be discussed. This presentation will summarize the evidence
relating periodontal disease to systemic conditions that are
prevalent in females such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease,
and osteopenia/osteoporosis. In addition, the link between
periodontal disease and adverse pregnancy outcomes will be
presented with the results of recent intervention trials.
Learning Objectives
1Understand the epidemiologic and clinical evidence
supporting the connections between the adverse effects
of periodontitis and diabetes mellitus.
2Understand the biological mechanisms thought to
contribute to the bi-directional link between diabetes and

Synopsis
About the Speaker
If your career path were a clear and straight path to a
rewarding retirement, travelling it would be pretty easy. But
life isn’t like that - it’s more like a winding road with lots of
forks to choose from, and more than a few detours. Major life
events- good or bad-including opening a practice…getting
married …being sued...inheriting money...or retiring, can all
change your financial needs in ways that aren’t obvious.
As a Professional Advisor at CDSPI Advisory Services
Inc. exclusively serving the dental community, Renata
Whiteman is an expert in providing insurance solutions
specific to the needs of dental professionals across Canada.
By understanding clients’ unique situations, she helps
them determine what types and amounts of insurance are
appropriate for both their personal and business needs.
Renata has completed numerous industry courses relevant
to insurance, and has over a decade of experience in the
industry. She is licensed as a general insurance broker and a
life, accident and sickness insurance agent.
Fortunately, it is possible to plan for better financial
outcomes in advance of such life events. At this seminar
you’ll learn ways to do so, including planning tips to save you
money and worry, and helpful facts such as:
• How office renovations can put your practice at risk without
you knowing
• When earning less on your investments may be your best
choice
• Why dentists without practices may want to incorporate
and buy office insurance
• How investments that defer tax can be ideal for your
practice
• When you can cut insurance coverage without reducing
protection
• Why stress reduction is necessary when life changes- even
for happy events
And much more

Time: 1:30pm-4:30pm | Room: Huron
Session Chair: Dr. Sheldon Cooper
CATEGORY 2 COURSE
Martin D. Levin
DMD
Synopsis
Endodontic treatment offers diagnostic and anatomical
challenges in daily practice. Clinicians are familiar with
normal variants of the teeth and supporting structures, but
treatment of unusual cases, medically complex patients
and diagnosis of neuropathic pain may require additional
resources. This evidence-based program will explain how
new technologies, such as limited field of view (FOV) highresolution CBCT, will allow three-dimensional assessment
of simple and complex odontogenic and non-odontogenic
lesions, root canal morphology, revision treatment, root and
alveolar fractures, resorptive lesions and anatomy prior to
surgery. Numerous case studies demonstrating the benefits
of CBCT will be presented.
Learning Objectives
1Learn how to use best clinical practices for diagnosis
and management of simple and complex endodontic
cases.
2Describe the benefits of limited FOV, high-resolution
CBCT in identification of complex dental morphology
and lesions of the supporting structures.
3 Understand how volumetric analysis can aid in the
diagnosis of periapical pathosis when contradictory
clinical signs and symptoms are present.
About the Speaker
Dr. Martin D. Levin is in private practice limited to endodontics
in Chevy Chase, Maryland, Adjunct Associate Professor
of Endodontics at the University of Pennsylvania, School
of Dental Medicine and Adjunct Associate Professor,

Peter Selby
DDS, PhD, FRCD(C)

Synopsis
Pain management is an integral part of dental practice
and dental practitioners are amongst the best educated
health professions in this area. Still, the dentist must exercise
reasonable professional judgment in determining whether to,
and when to prescribe any controlled substance, including
opioids. Prescriptions should be tailored to each patient
and condition, not follow a predetermined, routine practice.
A non-pharmacological approach, an OTC medication or
a non-opioid should be used when it will satisfy the need.
When prescribing opioids, dentists must be alert for behaviour
that suggests patients are experiencing problems with the
appropriate use of opioids or have an opioid use disorder.
Learning Objectives
1
Learn appropriate prescribing practices for pain
management, including how to advise patients on the use,
storage and discarding of prescription medication
2
Learn to identify patients who are susceptible to
problematic drug use/abuse
3
Become aware of resources to support your dental
practice around patients with pain

AFTERNOON SESSION
Synopsis
We’ve all heard the phrase, “It takes a village”. Even if your
dental practice does not routinely treat prenatal or pediatric
patients, everyone has a role in providing mothers and
children the healthiest start possible. Research suggests
that pregnancy can be one of the most motivating times
for parents to change habits. Therefore, it is an ideal time
to begin counselling the parent about the benefits of
oral health. This evidence based seminar nurtures your
knowledge of prenatal and pediatric oral health. It also
provides resources on how to integrate a formalized risk
assessment model and new strategies to implement that
assessment. Embrace prenatal and pediatric patients in your
practice. Be a part of the solution in ending one of the most
serious health concerns in this country.
Synopsis
The current and sometimes shocking health behaviours
and trends in the younger generation can influence
their oral and systemic health. The dental professional
has an opportunity during the dental visit to identify risk
behaviours and intervene with the teenager to make
positive health choices.
Participants will engage in a lively discussion on timely
topics relating to teens. Dialogue may include oral and
overall health issues associated with cola/sports drink
consumption, eating disorders, obesity and substance
abuse (Meth Mouth). Examining high risk behaviors and
gender differences prepare the dental professional to
initiate conversations that will provide guidance with the
health decisions that face the youth of today.
Learning Objectives
1Recognize the need for prenatal intervention and
prevention
2Implement initial and continuing age-appropriate risk
assessment
3Explore the impact of creating parents and physicians as
partners in treating children

SERVICE AWARD RECIPIENT 2015
In January of 1987 Dianne joined the dental industry, and has progressed
through various sales and management positions over the past 28 years. She has been with Premier Dental Products since 1996, had has been their
Canadian Manager for the last 15yrs
For over a century Premier has developed and manufactured innovative
technologies for dental professionals worldwide.
Dianne takes great pride in the fact that Premier is now in its’ 102nd year,
and has stayed true to their core beliefs for business and their employees,
since its founding in 1913. It is a rare breed in our industry, as it is still
family owned, and the current president, Ms. Julie Charlestein, is the greatgranddaughter of the company’s founder Julius Charlestein.
Premier understands the value of giving back to the industry and the
importance of charity and has been recognized in the industry for their
generosity for decades. Recently Dianne guided Premier Canada to donate 10,000 units of Fluoride varnish
to the Nunavut early intervention program and over 1,200 of units to the Niagara region primary care givers
(pediatrician) program. Dianne insures the company donates regularly to dental professionals going on local
and worldwide missions.
Dianne Grassie
Dianne is a member of Niagara College’s Program advisory committee and since 2006 she has served on the
DIAC board as the Director of the Convention portfolio, where she initiated the very first joint meeting between
DIAC and the education committees of the three largest
Canadian conventions. This now annual event has
resulted in industry suggestions implemented, and DIAC
being recognized as a contributor. Now, Dianne is DIACs
president elect, and will take over the presidential role in
2017 when David Marks’ Presidency is completed.
Mr. Joseph Brian Douglas

PAST SERVICE AWARD RECIPIENTS
Dianne is also very involved with her community. She is
the executive secretary of her Neighbourhood’s Rate Payers
Association, and canvasses yearly for the Canadian Cancer
society. When her children went through the programs, Dianne
was very active volunteering with both the Canadian girl guides
and Boy Scouts of Canada.
When she can find some free time, in the winter months, Dianne
enjoys playing ice hockey, snowboarding, cross country skiing
and snow shoeing. In the summer, she slows down a bit, and
you may find her playing ball hockey, riding her bicycle, wake
boarding, water skiing, kayaking on the Key River/Georgian Bay,
picking blueberries, or lying on the dock. Her current interest, is
working on her motorcycle license and finding twisting roads.

HONOURARY LIFE MEMBERSHIP 2015
William John Jenkins was born in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia in 1943. His
father died when John was only five years old, and he subsequently received
most of his elementary school education at boarding school.
While at school organized sports played a large part of John’s early life.
At St. Joseph’s Sunday School in Brisbane, John majored in rugby, tennis and
cricket. At the University of Queensland, John began to settle down focusing
his talents on squash as well as dentistry.
Dr. William John Jenkins
Upon graduation from dental school in 1964 John worked for a short while
as a dental technician as his young age did not allow him to be registered as
a dentist in Australia. As a result, John departed for London in 1964 and was
successful in completing studies in Oral Surgery and Orthodontics.
Seeking further training, John arrived in Toronto in 1968 and enrolled at the
Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Toronto completing his diploma in
Orthodontics in 1969 and his Master’s degree in 1974.
John enjoyed a thriving private practice in Orthodontics in midtown Toronto
which lasted until 2014 when he joined forces with Dr. Emad Arat so that he would have greater opportunities
at enjoying life away from the “fast lane”.
John has retained his teaching affiliation with the Orthodontic department at the Faculty which he continues
to this day. However, organized dentistry is perhaps his greatest passion. He is a current member of the
Central Toronto Dental Society, the Toronto Academy of Dentistry (1996-1997 president), the Canadian Dental
Association, the Toronto Orthodontic Study Club and the Ontario, Canadian and European Associations of
Orthodontics. He is a current and long-term chair of the Ontario Dental Association Benevolence Committee
and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Royal Australian College of Dental Surgeons, the
International College of Dentists, the American College of Dentists, the Academy of Dentistry International and
the Pierre Fauchard Academy. To this day, the man remains one connected individual.
For all his accomplishments, Dr. Jenkins has a weakness for wooden sailboats, which for the uninitiated means
that he likes boats that are difficult to keep afloat. Although he staunchly believes that if God wanted us to sail
fiberglass boats he would have created fiberglass trees. One can sincerely hope that he will someday see the
error of his ways and actually get out on the water. And because he is so busy trying to keep his classic Dragon
sailboat afloat, he has little time for his other interests that include photography and travel that to this day
remain sadly neglected.
John continues to reside in Toronto with his partner Laura who he met when she was working on her PhD in
English literature at U of T. They have two boys: Kevin, who is a medical doctor at the Princess Alexandra Hospital
in Brisbane, Australia and Nathan who is a city and regional planner in Toronto.
The Toronto Academy of Dentistry is delighted to convey Honourary Life Membership on William John Jenkins.
