Catch these videos and more at VEVO.com Q: Tell us how the Michael Jackson song “Man in the Mirror” originated. A: “In every way there was just an angel on our shoulder with this song... and the work of a great producer, Quincy Jones. Michael loved the kind of gospel influence of [the song]. One of the things that was fun and really great about Michael was his musicality... [for example] on the key phrase, “If you wanna make the world a better place, you better look at yourself and make a change,” it’s a really unusual cluster. It’s like a car horn — C, D, F, G — and I had it laid out like that on the demo and Michael just nailed it. This is a very complicated chord and there was just no problem… and that was just his genius musicality with it.” Q: Tell us about “The Way I Are.” A: When you’re working with Timbaland, he kind of “scats” the melody...he was doing, “I ain’t got no money,” and that became the blueprint. As he was saying that, I was thinking “Wow, you have a concept about being broke and about dating someone not for their exterior.” I’ve always had this concept about “taking your chain off ” — you don’t have to flaunt for me. That’s when I’ll see the real you...All that is icing...it’s great, but it’s icing. It was something I had to say. It was a really conquering moment to have that song take off around the world. Fox hit the jackpot this year with the Golden Globe award-winning musical comedy “Glee.” While nobody had a crystal ball, Fox TV music executive, Geoff Bywater, had the vision and passion to reach out early and I was fortunate to work closely with Geoff and Ward at Fox along with music supervisor PJ Bloom. As a result, UMPG ended up with 26 songs in the first 13 episodes of Season 1. We also had 7 songs on Volume 1 of the Glee soundtrack and 4 songs on the follow up Volume 2 (which have cumulatively sold over 1.3 million units to date). We’re already off to a great start on the back nine episodes of Season 1 which begin airing on April 13th following “American Idol.” This kind of show, and “Glee” in particular, has been great for the music publishing world because it serves as a great outlet for catalog songs regardless of who originally recorded them. For example, when the Glee cast covered “Lean On Me” (Withers) in Episode 10, the song hit Top 100 on the UK charts 38 years after its original release.
