Glen Oak Country Club
JULY 2016
President’s Message
After the conclusion of the Maddock Memorial Member-Member Tournament, I realized that this was a perfect
time to reflect on the Glen Oak experience and underscore why I feel that Glen Oak is the premiere club in the
area, and why its membership is second to none. Beginning with the Par 3 Tournament on Friday night,
Bob Sedlak, with input from Tom Lucas and Dave Maddock, devised an interesting loop around the front nine
holes, creating distances of anywhere from 90 to 150 yards. Who would have ever expected to have to hit the first
shot on hole #1 with a club of your choosing, but using the opposite handed club? Needless to say, no one even
made the green on that shot. Or who could have imagined having to hit a tee shot on another hole using junior
clubs? Probably the most fun was the captain-and-mate format hole where your fellow competitors got to pick
which shot was used, so instead of picking the best shot between you and your partner, your competitors
inevitably picked the worst shot for you to hit. I am sure that you can imagine the gentle, and sometimes not so
gentle, ribbing and bantering that occurred in that environment. Most importantly, the Par 3 Tournament provided
a lighthearted environment and an endless opportunity for laughs before the segue into the more serious
competition that began on Saturday. The most skillful demonstrations during the Par 3 Tournament were provided by Ron Yanoski and Jim Egan, both of whom had holes-in-one. Although Ron’s was a traditional hole-in-one,
somehow Jim managed to hit his tee shot on #9 behind a mannequin that was guarding the hole, and spun it back
into the hole for his ace. Due to the distances involved, the holes-in-one didn’t count as official holes-in-one, but
Ron and Jim wanted me to let you know that they are still gladly accepting individual $5 donations. They really
didn’t say that, but I am sure that they would still accept any $5 contributions thrown their way.
During the tournament, participants were treated to a golf course that was in pristine condition. Gino Marchetti,
Pat Moran, and the entire grounds-keeping staff have been working diligently to get the course into the best shape
possible. Also, the weather was spectacular for the entire tournament, which was quite a difference from a year
ago. After the first day’s results were in, nobody got too excited about the scoring, because everyone knew that
the tournament really didn’t kick in until the back nine on Sunday, when an aggregate score is posted for the team
and when the term “sorry partner” is uttered more than at any other time of the year. On Saturday evening,
participants, spouses, significant others and guests were treated to a fabulous dinner dance, with the entertainment
provided by the incredible Flaxy Morgan Band. Our General Manager Jeff Spagna had the house staff in high
gear to accommodate the approximately 200 attendees, assisted by Helayna Szescila, Allison LaRue, and a very
attentive wait staff. Our Executive Chef Pat Williamson and his entire kitchen staff wowed the crowd with a
top-notch menu. Our bar manager Bill Nicholls and his supporting staff did a great job keeping up with demand,
while lending a sympathetic ear to an endless litany of discussions of great shots and missed shots.
Once the tournament wrapped up on Sunday, and the top two winners in each flight were announced, it was off to
three separate shoot-outs. What was most exciting to see was the throng of GOCC fans supporting their favorite
players. One-by-one, the competition eliminated all but the teams of Gary Sebastianelli/Anthony Sebastianelli and
Gary Urnoski/Nick Urnoski, who were later tied after a subsequent aggregate shoot-out on holes 7 through 9. A
separate marathon shoot-out then ensued with the Sebastianelli’s outlasting the Urnoski’s after the 9th hole had
been replayed 5 times! It was refreshing to see just how many Glen Oak members stuck around and cheered the
final two groups on to the conclusion. Bob Sedlak, Justin Alunni, and the rest of the pro shop staff had a marathon
Glen Oak Country Club
session of their own with the scoring and logistics of the tournament and did a fantastic job.
What also made the event extra special was seeing Anthony Sebastianelli’s development from the time he began
our junior program until now, and remembering just a few short years ago when he was just taking up the game.
We certainly have a lot more success stories from our Junior program, and it is exciting to be part of a club that
supports the involvement of Junior members.
Equally exciting was seeing the number of family teams that were entered in the Maddock Memorial MemberMember tournament, and it reminds me of the larger Glen Oak Family, which is the crown jewel of Glen Oak
Country Club, which I made note of when I first assumed office. Having seen the phenomenal success of the
Maddock Memorial tournament this past weekend, and the enjoyable participation of so many of our members,
only reinforces that sentiment. Finally, let us not forget the namesake for whom the tournament was named. Gwil
Maddock was a mentor, a friend, and a legend. He would be extremely proud to have been honored by Glen Oak in
this annual tournament….

LADIES GOLF ASSOCIATION NEWS
Our Non-NEP member guest tournament, Green is the New Black, was a huge success! A field of 80 women
started the day with a breakfast of the standard fruit, coffee, tea and juice as well as a spread of sumptuous
delicious breads, muffins and scones baked by co chair Anne Silverman. After carbo-loading the golfers were
ready to go. Though it looked like it might rain at shot-gun it passed us by and ended up being a lovely day for
golf. A delicious lunch was served by the club... REALLY a stellar job by our Executive Chef, Patrick Williamson,
and Helayna Szescila, Dining Room Manager. A great time was had by one and all.

Green Report…Gino Marchetti, Superintendent
The weather has been hot and dry and thus, our crew has been out watering all day keeping the greens cool.
We will continue to do this until the weather cools down. Don’t see much rain coming our way in the next
two weeks. We have replaced most of the weak areas of bent grass over the past few weeks with our own
sod. It’s healthier grass and we shouldn’t have any problems with it. These areas should heal quickly.
• Please remember to fix your ball marks on greens. The sooner they are repaired the faster they will
heal. Be sure to twist into the center of the ball mark, don't lift. Lifting tears roots. Copy the link
below to watch a short video from the USGA on how to fix your ball mark correctly.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=myOTf1wuZoA
• Be sure to fill your divots on fairways and when we are on “cart paths only” please
take the divot bottle with you to fill your divots.
• I’d like to remind everyone we have walking
divot bottles located under the divot bottle refill
station near the cart shed on #6. So please be sure to grab one if you are walking.

Answer
Rule 15-3b required A to replace his ball. A played from a wrong place, incurring a penalty of two strokes when he made a stroke
with his ball from the spot to which it had been played by B. Since B did not get the ball out of the bunker, and A did not gain significant advantage in playing from a wrong place he does not have to correct the error by replacing the ball. B is penalized two
strokes for playing a wrong ball.
