Glen Oak Country Club
August 2016
General Manager’s Report… Jeffrey Spagna, CCM
The month of August
has burst onto the scene and
with it comes the Club’s most
exciting and prestigious event of
the year… the Irving Jackman
Memorial Golf Tournament.
This season’s edition will take
place from Friday, August 5th,
through Sunday, August 7th, and
will again feature three days and
nights of fantastic food, spectacular entertainment,
premier beverages and the usual endless excitement on
the golf course.
The gentlemen will get everything underway
with 18 holes of competitive golf Friday morning and
afternoon and will stick around that evening to enjoy the
infamous display of assorted gourmet seafood presented
by Executive Chef Patrick Williams and his talented
culinary team. Saturday’s golf activity will be followed
by our annual Jackman Memorial Dinner Dance and will
mark the return of Bill Lombardi and his fantastic
“Group du Jour” band, featuring the dynamic Ms. Josette
Miles. Many of those who attended last year’s Saturday
night event called it the best ever of its kind and I assure
you we are doing everything possible to make sure that
happens again this year. The menu has been carefully
crafted so that there will
be something to please
everyone from start to
finish. Another huge
crowd approaching 300
or more members and
guests is anticipated and
with a little assistance
from Mother Nature, we
will surely provide a
spectacular night at your
club both inside and out.
And while the Jackman event may take top billing on
the August social calendar, we’ve put together a
supporting cast of other activities that will hopefully
keep everyone entertained. The “Wade Preston Dinner
Show” originally scheduled
for August 20th, has been
postponed until Saturday,
September 3rd, due to a
conflict of events on his very
busy calendar. For those of
you who love the music of
Billy Joel and those who
have been fortunate enough
to see the Broadway Show
“Movin Out”, you’ll be delighted to know that Wade Preston was featured in the
band on many occasions in New York City. I’m thrilled
to have been able to book him for a ninety-minute
show, which will be preceded by cocktails,
hors doeuvres and dinner. Please watch for a special
flyer with all of the pertinent details for this great
evening.
The month’s Happy Hour
will be offered on Friday, August
26th, and a date will be announced
shortly for this summer’s
“Dive-In Theater” at the Club
Pool. The second “Summer Family Cookout & BBQ”
will take place on
Sunday, August 28th,
with a special flyer
included with this
mailing. And don’t
forget to circle
Wednesday, August 31st, when we will present this
year’s President’s Day Golf Tournament and dinner.

FAMILY SUMMER COOK-OUT & BARBECUE
SUNDAY, AUGUST 28th
5:00-9:00pm
What promises to be a very enjoyable event for all Glen Oak members will take place on
Sunday afternoon August 28th, at the Club when our second "Family Summer Cookout and
Barbecue" is presented beginning at 5:00 pm. Hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs and
sausage will be served hot off the grill and will be accompanied by a delicious buffet featuring BBQ spare ribs and chicken, steamed clams, corn on the cob, pierogies, mac n' cheese,
potato, pasta, mixed garden and Caesar salads, a build-your-own sundae bar, home-baked
cookies and brownies will be available until 9:00 pm.
DJ Mark Colarossi will be on hand to provide the musical entertainment and there will be
special activities for all of the children including a moonwalk castle, face-painting and
balloon sculptures. What better way is there to finish off your day following a relaxing visit
to the pool, a round of golf or simply a lazy afternoon of doing nothing?
Seating will be available on both patios and in the dining rooms, if necessary, and
reservations will be taken on a first come first serve basis, so call as soon as possible to
arrange for your tables. Simply dial 570-587-7632 or email to [email protected]
I'm hoping you will be able to join us for a great
late summer afternoon and evening at your club!

News from the Superintendent… Gino Marchetti
Someone turn down the heat!!! The crew has been working hard keeping the greens cool by syringing. We will
connue this process unl the weather cools down or we get some much needed rain.
With the Jackman coming up next weekend my crew is working very hard geng the course in awesome shape for
the 3 day tournament. Please be paent and allow any employee some extra me to move out of the way. Thank
you.
As a reminder, fall aerificaon will begin the week of Monday August 8th. The golf course will be closed Monday,
August 8th & Tuesday, August 9th. The golf course will re-open Wednesday, August 10th at 10:00am.
Some things that I would like to address with members:
—Now that summer is upon us there is no need to replace your divot. Just refill it with the soil that is provided on all
the golf carts. The replaced divot will die due to the sheared roots. Also, remember to take the bo1le with you
when we are cart paths only. Don't forget we have walking divot bo1les as well, which are located next to the divot
bo1le refill staon next to the cart shed.
—Please fix ball marks on greens. The faster they are fixed and fixed correctly the faster they will heal. Remember
to twist, don't li5 the ball mark. Li5ing shears roots and the ball mark will die.
We are pung out stakes and ropes on the green surrounds to control traffic in these areas. Please walk around
them.

News from the Golf Pro… Bob Sedlak
This year’s Irving Jackman Memorial Tournament will be contested Friday – Sunday, August 5th – 7th. For those not participating this is an excellent opportunity to come out and see some of the best players in the club and the region negotiate the quick
greens and challenging conditions our course has to offer. The always exciting Round-Robin Shootout will start around 5:30 on
Sunday, and spectators are encouraged! The professional staff will secure tee times from area clubs for members who are not
participating in the event.
The golf course and golf shop will be closed on Monday, August 8th, though the bag room will be staffed for anyone who needs
to drop off or pick up clubs. The golf course will be closed on Tuesday as well, but the golf shop will be open from 10-6. The
