H. Poole Middle School December 2012 Gregory O. Daniel Robert A. Bingham Rosina Raines Principal Assistant Principal Assistant Principal Dear Mustang Family, We were pleased to see so many of you come out for Parent Conference Night. We had a total of 484 conferences scheduled. Thank you for your continued support of our students and teachers at H. H. Poole Middle School. The month of November delivered all that it promised. It marked the end of the first marking period which was very successful for many of our students. Our first State of the Mustang Address was held to provide students with an update about what is happening in our school. This event will be held at the end of each marking period. It gives us an opportunity to recognize students for academic and other outstanding achievements such as Honor Roll, Perfect Attendance, and All-County performances. We had over half the students at each grade level recognized for their achievements. Additionally, we celebrated “A” Day and Perfect Attendance with prize drawings featuring gift cards valued at $25. Congratulations to all students and families! We are extremely proud of their accomplishments. The word of the month for December is “Kindness”. As part of the mission of H. H. Poole, we strive to bestow acts of kindness to our greater community. Last year more than 350 Stafford families along with several community food banks and other service organizations received food baskets via this food drive. Throughout the school year, especially during the holiday season, specific initiatives are sponsored by the staff, students, and clubs to reach out to local families in need. Members of our NJHS provided Holiday meals for three area families through their donations of nonperishable food items along with grocery store gift cards. Our SCA will be collecting food items for the American Legion (Post 290) Annual Food Drive. Additionally, over half our staff members participated and raised approximately $2,000 and contributed to the 2012 United Way Campaign. We are requesting nominations for the 2012 – 2013 H. H. Poole Teacher and Service Employee of the Year Award. Parents, staff, and students may nominate a teacher or service employee that exemplifies the qualities of a master teacher or service person. Please visit our school web-site: http://www.stafford.poole.schoolfusion.us/ . Click on the links to cast your nomination. We have begun our winter sports (Boys Basketball and Wrestling) and activities season, and we hope to see you in the stands. If the stands aren’t inviting enough, we have lots of wonderful fine and performing arts events during the month to kick of the holiday season. Here are a few upcoming events and dates for you to add to your calendars. Please be sure to check the school’s website for other dates and events. December 5: Orchestra Winter Concert @ NSHS; 7:30 p.m. December 17: Band Winter Concert @ NSHS; 7:00 p.m. December 18: Chorus Winter Concert @ HHPMS; 7:30 p.m. December 24– January 1: Holiday Break - No School for Students January 2: School Resumes We want to continue to encourage every parent, family, and community member to become a part of the Mustang Family by joining the PTO, becoming a Parent Volunteer (Library, School-Level committees, etc…), participating in the Adopt-a- Classroom program, and/or any other way possible. We thank you for your commitment to and involvement in all that is going on here at H. H. Poole. I WISH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY A HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON AND NEW YEAR! Sincerely, Gregory O. Daniel Principal SCHOOL HOURS: ABSENT OR TARDY POLICY SCHOOL DELAYS & CLOSINGS TRANSPORTATION CHANGES VISITING DURING SCHOOL HOURS Please remember the school day begins at 8:20 am and ends at 2:50 pm. Your student’s education begins promptly at 8:20 and continues throughout the day. They learn best when in their classroom environment. Please contact the school by 10:00 am if your child is going to be late or absent. A written note should be given to the attendance office on the day your student returns to school to justify the absence from school. The absence will remain unexcused until a written note is received. In cases of inclement weather, please listen to the radio/television stations, visit www.staffordschools.net, register on www.schoolsout.com and/or www.staffordalert.com for postings on school delays and closings. Should a two hour delay be placed into effect, school will begin at 10:20 am Your student will be picked up from their normal bus stop exactly two hours from the normally scheduled time. Please do not bring your student to school before 9:45 AM as teachers will not be in the building to supervise them before that time. Should you need to change your student’s transportation for a short term, whether it be a walker, bus or car rider, please send a written note (in your handwriting). Please instruct your student to bring it to the main office directly after reporting to home room. Should your student wish to ride a different bus with a friend, both students must have written parental consent from both sets of parents before a bus pass may be issued. Without written permission, your student will be sent home in their regular routine of transportation. Visiting is permitted, but certain procedures must be followed. If you wish to meet with your student’s teacher, please make arrangements and an appointment prior to coming to school. Teachers cannot be disturbed during instructional time. All teachers may be reached through their email which can be found on the web site http://stafford.poole.schoolfusion.us. Also, all visitors must sign in and out in the main office and wear a visitor’s badge while they are in the building. Please note that a Photo ID is required. ARRANGING EARLY DISMISSALS If you must pick your student up prior to regular dismissal time, please send in a written note for your student to bring to the office after reporting to their home room teacher. An early dismissal slip will be given to your student and noted on the attendance record. This should allow your student to quietly leave their classroom with little interruption, and be waiting in the main office for you to pick them up at the pre-arranged time. TELEPHONE USAGE: CELL PHONES Cell phones are not allowed to be on the student’s person during school hours. Cell phones must remain turned off in the student’s locker. There is a telephone in the main office that students may use. Students must obtain a phone pass from their classroom teacher to use this phone and must log the purpose of the call plus leave a full message if they reach an answering machine so the main office staff may assist the person calling back to the school. They ran a very successful candy gram sale. All students had the opportunity to buy candy grams for friends they are thankful for. SCA members then delivered these treats to the appropriate homeroom teachers for distribution. The Candy Sale was such a success that SCA members will be running another candy gram sale December 13th through December 19th. Candy grams will be sold during the student lunch time. SCA will also be working with the American Legion to run a food drive here at HH Poole. Each classroom will get a box to decorate and there will be a prize for one homeroom per grade level for the best box! Hopefully these boxes will be filled with donated can goods and other non perishable food items. These items will help to make up holiday food baskets and will be given to less fortunate families in our County. Happy Holidays from the SCA!!!! H.H. TECHNOLOGY TOPICS Enhancing Students with Technology Miss Goll in our library used Skype to communicate with Tom Angleberger, author of the popular Origami Yoda series. Because his home is 5-6 hours away in Virginia, it was not practical for him to travel here on the school's budget, but thanks to the technology available to us, Skyping enabled all of HH Poole's 6th graders to chat live with a successful author. The students got a peek into his home, and asked lots of great questions. They also learned what inspired Mr. Angleberger to start writing the series; and as an entire group, the 6th graders received expert instructions for making their own origami Yoda - step by step! Everyone loved it! If you have any questions regarding our school’s technology, you are encouraged to contact Mr. Flath, our TRT, at [email protected] Charity from National Junior Honor Society The National Junior Honor Society members are working on their annual Christmas project. Each year, NJHS members adopt a family in need of gifts for the children. This year’s adopted family has four children ranging in age from infant to teen. At our November meeting, members organized themselves into groups that took responsibility for each of the children. The members are joining together to purchase age-appropriate gifts. Members will bring the gifts to our December meeting, where they will wrap and label the gifts while enjoying holiday treats. The meeting date is December 11 from 3:15 – 5:00 PM. The NJHS was busy at Thanksgiving as well. Members brought in canned goods and other nonperishable items to provide Thanksgiving meals for two families. The families also received $25 Giant gift cards, so they could purchase turkeys and other essential items. The gift cards were purchased with NJHS member dues. Congratulations to the NJHS officers for 2012-2013. They are: President, Logan Zlotnick; Vice President, Thomas Branstetter; Treasurer, Molly Murray; and Secretary, Josh Chapple. BO K FAIR!
