Together, we make college possible.
Together, we change lives.
Message from the President
Dear Friends,
The Chemeketa Foundation makes college possible for deserving students who are
committed to creating a better life through education.
In 2014 –
• 2,052 students applied for Chemeketa Foundation
scholarships
• 492 scholarships were awarded
• $4,227 was the estimated cost of attending Chemeketa
for one term (tuition, fees, books, rent, transportation,
personal expenses, etc.)
• $1,200 was our average scholarship award
Each year, we see the need continue to grow. Each year, your generosity makes college
a reality. Your support transforms the lives of our students and our region.
Thank you for keeping the Chemeketa Foundation on your list of giving priorities.
Sincerely,
Julie Huckestein
President
“From 2004–2010 I worked with a
team to improve the life of village
people in a remote part of India.
We taught them how to garden, the
importance of hygiene and helped
them to build toilets. During that
period, I learned of teenage girls
being targeted by human traffickers.
In some cases, they would approach
teenage girls offering jobs with
high salaries or modeling. Poverty
in the village made it easy for these
human predators. After completing
my work in the village, I came to the
United States to pursue my degree
in psychology in hopes of helping
end this modern day slavery. Your
support enables me to go after my
dream.”
—Binu, Gretchen S. Schuette Strength in Diversity
Scholarship and Vista Masonic Scholarship
The Vista Masonic Lodge #215 established this
scholarship to assist two full-time Chemeketa
students annually in reaching their academic
goals. The lodge hosts an annual dinner to meet
their student recipients and celebrate their
academic accomplishments.
“Being part of the nursing program
at Chemeketa has helped me grow
both academically and personally.
The confidence and skills I have
gained will help me be a better
nurse and provide quality patient
care. Advocating for others and
helping to alleviate their pain is
what I want to do with my life. I
would like to explore all fields of
nursing, but my ultimate goal is
to work in labor and delivery. This
support will enable me to be able to
focus more on learning and alleviate
the added stress of the financial
burden. Your help means the world
to me.”
—Cassandra, Jeanette Rustin Memorial Scholarship
During her end-of-life care, Jeanette Rustin was
deeply moved by the warmth and compassion
she received from the nurses in charge of her
care. After discovering they had graduated
from Chemeketa’s Nursing Program, she
established a planned gift from her estate
to assist nursing students in the program.
The Jeanette Rustin Memorial Scholarship
represents Jeanette’s spirit of generosity while
providing 20 students scholarships in 2014.
“Child care has always been a tough
patch in my journey, even with my
husband working more than 40
hours a week and my part-time job.
Because of the generous support of
donors, I now have a plan and there
is nothing in the way of achieving
my academic goals. For that I thank
you with all of my heart. I appreciate
not only for what you’ve done for
my family, but for all of the parents
you are helping who are trying
to make a better future for their
families.”
—Michelle, Child Care Scholarship
The average cost of child care ranges from
$200-$1,000 per month for just one child. For
many of our students, this is a major deterrent
to attending and completing college. In 2014,
more than 440 eligible student-parents applied
for our child care scholarships. This remains
our area of greatest need and a focus of the
Chemeketa Foundation since 1973. Education
is important to the success and future of our
student-parents and their families.
“After graduating from the
automotive technology program, I
plan to work on my transfer degree
with the hope of one day working
on law enforcement vehicles for the
City of Salem. These scholarships
have lightened my financial burden,
which allows me to focus more
on the most important aspect of
school: learning. Your generosity has
inspired me to help others and give
back to the community. I hope one
day I will be able to help students
achieve their goals just as you have
helped me.”
—Oscar, Auto Technology Obsolete Fleet Chevys
Scholarship and Model A Ford Club-Willamette
Valley Chapter Scholarship
The Willamette Valley Chapter of the Model
A Ford Club of America gives back to the
community and provides assistance to students
enrolled full-time in the Automotive Technology
Program at Chemeketa. This award is for
deserving students pursuing a degree or
certificate.
“When I received this scholarship, I
looked for articles regarding Nate’s
accident and found much more than
expected. Every article I found spoke
to Nate’s great character, of his
humility, his honesty, and determination
to help those around him. For me,
this scholarship is so much more than
financial support. It inspires me to
embrace each day and do my best to
carry on his values and beliefs. I would
like to thank Nate for his service and
I hope to be his brother in the fire
service one day.”
—Brian, Nathan Turner Memorial Scholarship
Nate Turner was a remarkable young man working
as a firefighter and paramedic. His passion for
service and calming presence made him a valuable
team member and a thoughtful caregiver. During
his last five years, he volunteered with Medical
Teams International, combining his wanderlust and
stewardship to care for people affected by disaster,
conflict and poverty around the world. After Nate’s
tragic death from a climbing accident in 2011,
his family and friends honored his love of life and
commitment to service with a memorial scholarship
supporting students in his name.
“I grew up in extreme poverty and am
the first in my family to attend college.
I am currently dual enrolled at Pacific
University, pursuing an education
degree. Once I’m finished with school,
my dream is to open a school to create
opportunities for children that are in
poverty. I want every child to have the
opportunity to become educated and
follow their dreams.”
—Najma, Betty Gray Early Childhood Scholarship
John and Betty Gray strived to improve the quality
of early childhood development by promoting the
education of professionals working with children.
This scholarship was made possible through grants
since 2004 from the Betty Gray Early Childhood
Development Endowment Fund at the Oregon
Community Foundation.

“This scholarship gives me an
opportunity to learn skills that will

“Being the oldest of four children
and coming from a single parent
household, this scholarship means
a lot to me. Not only am I the first
in my family to go to college, I am
the first in my family to graduate
high school. Being accepted into
the highly-competitive dental
assisting program at Chemeketa is
a dream come true, but affording
tuition and additional program fees
was a challenge. I am extremely
grateful for the scholarships I
received and the donors who
allowed my education to be

40 years of transformed lives
In 1973 a small group of community members joined together, offering small loans to
support student-parents trying to earn their degree. Forty years later, the Chemeketa
Foundation has evolved to support hundreds of students each year through more than
100 unique scholarship funds and awards. From its inception, the Foundation’s budget
has grown from $3,000 to awarding more than $400,000 each year.

Chemeketa’s community
of caring
In 2014, the Chemeketa Foundation
sought to gain 40 new monthly
employee givers in 40 days for our
40th anniversary. More than 53 college
employees signed up to support
Chemeketa scholarships and student
relief funds. We are honored to be
a part of an organization who so
generously invests in the lives of our
students.

“I personally feel that enabling
student-parents to further their
education, via child support, is a
win/win for our community. Giving

valuable way for our organization
to pass along the support we
receive from the community.”
—Jay Hansen, CJ Hansen Heating

“Our Willamette Valley Model A
Club has been closely involved with
Chemeketa Community College for
decades. Over the years we have
had instructors from the college
in our club, we have had regular
Model A workshops in their shops
spaces, and we have conducted
our annual Father’s day Swap meet
at the College. This has been a
wonderful relationship for many
years, and our club has always felt
a responsibility to return some
of the good will the College has
shown us. It has been more than 20
years that our club has offered an
annual scholarship to a Chemeketa
student in the automotive field.
We believe our scholarship has
helped many students in their
quest for developing careers in the
automotive industry. We have been
extremely pleased with the success
of our scholarship recipients, and
we are proud to continue this
tradition.”
