NO HIGHER CALLING
A NEWSLETTER OF THE KENTUCKY TENNESSEE LITERATURE EVANGELISTS
“There is no higher work than evangelistic canvassing, for it involves the performance of the highest moral duties.
Those who engage in this work need always to be under the control of the Spirit of God.” - CM 12
Show Me Your Library
The Earl Nightingale Program “Our Changing World” - #101
Here’s a question for you: Let’s suppose a leading University in your area decided to make a survey for the purpose of publishing a report on the home
libraries of the country. A young, sincere student knocks on your door and when you answer, says: “How do you do, I’m Charlie Smith from Noncollapsible University. We’re conducting a survey on the reading habits of this area. May I come in and, on this form, make a list of the books you own?”
Well, would you let him in? Your answer to that question will determine the kind of future you, and possibly your children, can look forward to.
Builders say that with few exceptions libraries are no longer being built into new homes. For the most part those that are are used as repositories for
knick-knacks and little planters. I guess if the people living in these homes were surveyed they’d have to answer: “Library, what are you talking about,
library? The library’s down on the corner of Fifth and Maple! What are you—some kind of a nut or something?”
Somebody once wrote: “If we graduate today but stop learning tomorrow we will be uneducated the next day. How many kids today who get their high
school or college diploma have the vague notion that it is now over and that they are prepared for life and its problems? How many businessmen who
have attained a certain goal in life feel that now we can coast on in? Or what about the salesman who thinks he has mastered his product knowledge, his
company policies, his sales tools and sales talk and can now “get by” with this information for the rest of his life?”
Fred Sharpe, Director of the National Independent Meat Packers Association, wrote in a bulletin: “I believe there is one thing most of us adults are overlooking: we must not only keep pace for ourselves but we MUST project ourselves into the future for the sake of our younger generation who cannot think
for themselves yet. Continued learning carries us beyond the judgments and immaturity of our yesterdays and keeps us face to face with all the perplexing changes in our fast moving world. It is not enough to hold ground or keep what we’ve got. Our business will not wait until the new generation takes
charge. No, it is we, the adults, who must determine what tomorrow will bring to our children. We will get tomorrow for them what we have destined for
them by our ability to keep abreast of events and assist in shaping the policies under which they must perform tomorrow. In other words, what we do
today will be what the coming generations inherit tomorrow.
“Now with this certainty facing us, what are we doing about it? Well, frankly, there are all too many people closing their eyes to reality—by ignoring the
signs of the times; by an attitude of condescension, by the very thought of re-investing some time and money in any future process of learning After all—
aren’t we all adults? Another stumbling block is a new image thrust upon us which finds most of us enmeshed in a mood of the age which worships leisure. Many of us indulge ourselves in the conceit that we are making good use of our spare time by many devious methods designed only to kill it.”

If you would slam the door in the face of the young man taking the home library survey—you’ve got a problem. But it’s a problem you can solve.
“The church must give her attention to the canvassing work. This is one way in which she is to shine in the world.
Then she will go forth, fair as the moon, clear as the sun and terrible as an army with banners.” RH Jan. 1, 1901
