2017 Maintenance Fees
At the May 25th meeting of the Board, the 2017 Budgets were approved
with increases to the maintenance fees.
The increases vary from 2.4% to 3% and are necessary due to increases in the cost of insurance, propane gas, payroll and anticipated
capital expenditures. Every effort has been made to control these increases, and we are careful to continually insure that we remain
competitive with other timeshare communities. An example of our sound budgeting ability is the fact that no increase is used to offset
budget shortfalls from the preceding year, as there are virtually no such shortfalls. Our aim is to maintain the standards you have come
to expect of your home away from home, and to plan ahead for needs and improvements of the Resort to avoid special assessments,
unpleasant surprises, or a lessened experience.
As a reminder, accounts must be paid in full no later than October 1st. Late payment fees are levied thereafter ($50 per week), and
finance charges of 1 1/2% per month are also assessed. Payments may be made by check or by VISA and MasterCard. A convenience
fee of 2% of the total is assessed if VISA or MasterCard are used.

Nominations are now being accepted through September 23, 2016.
Lawai Beach Resort Timeshare Association has three positions
(one representative for each building) for a three year term up for
election. You must be an owner in the building you wish to
represent and you may not represent more than one building.
Lika Lani Timeshare Owners Association has one position for a
three year term up for election.
Elections will be held at the annual meeting on January 25, 2017.

The 2017 maintenance fee statement was mailed the 1st week of July. If you haven't received your
statement by the end of July, please contact Malia Freitas at [email protected]
the upper and lower lobby. We are working with the contractor to
have this project scheduled within the next couple of months.
In August, projects scheduled to date are the retiling of the Coral
spa and renovation of the Alii pool restroom. If you have not been
home recently, a pool wristband policy was instituted on May
19th due to the many instances of outside guest(s) at our pools;
this will easily identify our registered owners and guests.

Here is a few of the projects completed in the recent five years
without special assessment:
Aloha from Sunny Kaua’i! Summer is here, you can feel the change in
the air (hot and humid). The ocean swells moved from the north back
to the south, so SURF’s up!
2007 to present: We continue to have Spalling concerns. These
repair costs have been in excess of $800,000.
2010: Purchased Genie Lift for $15,650 – this is used for tree
trimming, high cleaning and painting by our staff. In the past, we
rented one for 4 to 6 weeks annually at a cost of $1,200 per week.
Our vendors also use it when needed, thereby decreasing our
overall cost of the project. Savings to date is $81,500.
2011: PPA for photovoltaic solar with no out of pocket cost $5.5
million. Lika Lani was just completed. Energy savings since it
came on line in August 2013 is $219,000.
2011: New roofs on all buildings included in the photovoltaic
solar project, savings $1.6 million.
2011 – 2014: Completed a $3.1 million renovation to Alii
timeshare units.

I want to highlight new projects coming up shortly. But don’t
forget to check the progress of current projects on the website,
www.lawaibeach.org.
In the Alii units, we removed the area rugs as it was stained and could
not be cleaned. A sample has been installed in a unit to measure how
well it wears. At the September meeting, the Board members will make
a decision based on the condition.
The Executive Suites in the Banyan building will be getting new
entertainment centers in July. The existing center will be removed from
the wall; followed with repair and painting. The new center will then
be installed with larger TV sets mounted on the wall. Later this year,
these units will also have the tile replaced in the entry through to the
kitchen and in the bathrooms. Bathroom renovation will include a walk
in shower in the master bath (removing the Jacuzzi), new counter top
with under mount sink, comfort level low flow toilet and new
plumbing fixtures throughout. In the guest bath, tub and tile
surround is also being replaced, new counter top with under mount
sink, comfort level low flow toilet and plumbing fixtures throughout.
Over at the Coral building, the units are getting new drapes and sheers
soon. The Board members chose a Papaya color scheme, which works
well in both the living room and bedroom(s).
The lobby will be refreshed with the removal of the wall paper behind
the registration desk. A new color scheme will be painted throughout

I am confirmed for a one bedroom unit, can I upgrade to a
two bedroom upon arrival?
No. We are a sold out property and do not have excess inventory.
You should check with your exchange company if their inventory
has this availability. You may also check if another one bedroom
is available for rent through HTSE as another option.
How many people can sleep in a one bedroom?
And a two bedroom? The maximum occupancy for a one
bedroom is 4 people and 6 people in a two bedroom.

30 Years
of Dedication
With great honor at the May 2016 Board of
Directors meeting we were able to acknowledge
three of our long term associates for their
continuous service of thirty years. It was our
privilege to present Noe Ho'okano, Patsy Shafer
and Helenda Bueno with a plaque that displays
their many years of dedication. It is our intention
to display this plaque showing varying years of
service for all our long term associates.
This beautiful plaque will be proudly displayed
in the main lobby of the Banyan building. It is
unusual to have long term employment at the
same resort in the time sharing industry.

The Visitor Industry Charity Walk was held on May 14, 2016.
This 2.9-mile walk is a wonderful way to stay healthy and
kokua (help) the community. Once again, Lawai Beach Resort
sponsored an Aid Station handing out bottled water and
homemade candy pretzels wrapped in ti leaf. With a total of 16
associates, their family members and board members, we cheered
the walkers towards the finish line, where they enjoyed an ono
(delicious) breakfast!
All funds raised go toward 40 not-for-profit agencies on
the Island of Kauai. Owners and Guests are encouraged to
participate next May and can earn a Charity Walk tee-shirt with
a $35 pledge. If you’re interested in walking, please contact
Deborah Crippen in the spring.

HNALEI BAY SWIM CHALLENGE
The Swim Challenge was named one of
the Top 100 Open Water Swims in the
United States. The only race of its kind on Kauai! Join 300 other
swimmers from all the other Hawaiian islands as well as the
mainland and international visitors, in one of four open-water races.
In addition to two races held for the Keiki (kids) there will also be
a 1,000 and 3,000 meter courses. Tradition of this race honors each
Keiki who finishes the race with a ribbon, while in the adult races the
top three swimmers in each category receive a medal. 7:00 AM to

Contest (Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall) - Celebrating
its 32nd anniversary as a founding event of the Kaua`i Mokihana Festival, this event encourages
the composition of new music through its various categories including: Hawaiian (must be in the
Hawaiian language), Contemporary Hawaiian, Open, Professional and Youth (13-15 years old).
Trophies and cash prizes are awarded. Participants in this contest are inspired by sharing their
personal musical creations with the Island’s people and visitors.
Tuesday, September 20th, 9:00 AM - EŌ, E LILIʻU (Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall) A growing and exciting event that allows students in the Hawaiian immersion school programs on Kauaʻi to compete
musically by grades with songs in the Hawaiian language.
Tuesday, September 20th, 6:00 PM - Under The Palms at Wailua (Hilton Garden Inn Kauai) - Enjoy the rich culture of
Hawaiʻi through sweet Hawaiian music and hula. Featuring Lady Ipo Kahaunaele-Ferreira
and friends with hula performances from select hālau hula from Kauaʻi and elsewhere.
Wednesday, September 21st, - Cultural Presentation (Location and Time: TBA)
A cultural event related to this year's theme - The Year of Hawaiian Hospitality.
Thursday, September 22nd, 6:00 PM - Hula Competition: Solo/Group Kahiko
Nei (Location: TBA) - This event demonstrates a creative and unique idea in hula in
the ancient style (kahiko) with a slight twist of Kaua'i flavor. Newer chants are
encouraged by judges. Chants that are 10 years old or less get five bonus points.
Bonus points are given to chants 20 years or younger.
Friday, September 23rd, 6:00 PM - Hula Competition: Group `Auana (Location: TBA) - This is the second evening of
hula competition and features hula ʻauana, or modern hula. This group competition allows the hula school (halau) to use traditional, borrowed or newly created implements to add a "contemporary" flavor to hula. This event encourages the ingenuity and
creativeness of our kumu hula. Categories include: Kaikamāhine, Keikikāne, Wāhine, Kāne, Kūpuna and Hui/ʻOhana. Come
early, as Kauaʻi's Aloha Festival's Royal Court will attend this event in full regalia with ceremonial entrance.
Saturday, September 24th 12:00 Noon. - Hula Competition Solo 'Auana Finale (Location: TBA) - The finale cannot be
missed. First, solo competition enchants the audience. Then, all the competing hālau and audience wait breathlessly to see the
winners announced by the judges. This year, special solo awards are offered by Hawaiʻi Community Foundation.

THE COCONUT FESTIVAL at Kapaa Beach Park. This popular community festival provides demonstrations about the
many uses, by-products and history surrounding coconut, a vital staple among Polynesian cultures. The festival also provides
continual entertainment, cooking demonstrations by Kauai’s signature chefs, a large gathering of Kauai artisans (featuring
certified Kauai Made vendors), crafters and Polynesian products. In addition there will be kooky coconut games, pie-eating

EO E EMALANI I ALAKAI Festival Kanaloahuluhulu Meadow fronting the Kokee
Museum. This is a free commemorative event honoring Queen Emma's ascent into Kokee
in 1871. Day long hula and Hawaiian music, chant and oli. A royal procession on horseback
