Note: Some ancestors of Cynthia Sickler
31 MASON, Dorothy
and Melissa Miller were clearly “Descendants
of Dutchess County, New York.” For the Sicklers
of Beekman Patent, Dutchess, they could only lease land there, All these families would be motivated to migrate to Wyoming Valley, PA
after 1766 in order to own their own land. Dutchess County, NY, is the area shown in red on the map. It borders Connecticut. Some
immigrants were from the Palatinate (such as the Sicklers) and others (Millers, Phillips, and Whites) were English who from RI, MA, VT
or CT. Beekman named after Henry Beekman, who received grant for the land from the British Crown in 1697. That Susannah Phillips
was born in Vermont may indicate her family retreated from war-torn Wyoming County temporarily. In a book called "Settlers of the
Beekman Patent" by renowned Beekman historian Frank J. Doherty it is stated Mary’s (13) parents were Joshua Burtch and Anna
Champlin. Both buried in Beekman Cemetery, Poughquag. It is also known the Burtches lived near the Sicklers in Beekman.
b. in Pawling,
Dutchess Co, NY

** “traditions” that someone was “born in Holland” can be
misleading. Immigrants from the Palatinate usually docked in
ports in the Netherlands, and babies were of course born there.
People “sailed from Rotterdam” along the routes. Yet, they are
of German or Swiss or even English ancestry and not Dutch.

Previously the Franklin (Francklyne) families were of Ecton, Northamptonshire,

* Note: John “Deacon”Phillips (2), born 1751, was a Revolutionary War veteran.
He saw service in the battle of Wyoming and served in the Vermont Continental Line.
Enrolled as Pvt Jan 10, 1776 in Pownal, VT with Col. Seth Warner's Green Mountain Boys. Marched to Quebec and served 4 months and 17 days. Re-enlisted Nov
1, 1776, in David Goff's Co. in Col. Merrick's Reg. Re-enlisted June, 1777 for 27 days. Later served in Capt. Blanchard's PA Co. Also enlisted Dutchess Co. NY, June,
1779 with Capt. Head's New York troops. Placed on the pension roll of Luzerne Co., Pa. 1834 for service in the Vermont militia. • The tradition that Mary Franklin
(11) was an Aunt of Benjamin Franklin comes in part from Mary and Arthur’s grandson Abel Aylsworth (variant spelling), who, when 79 years of age, stated that he
"was named Abel by his grandmother, called Aunt Mary, the wife of Arthur, and was so named for her brother, Abel Franklin, the uncle of Benjamin Franklin."
Arthur Aylesworth or Ayyworth Sr (20) settled in Quidnesset Neck, North King's Towne, Washington Co., RI, where he was appointed an inspector Feb. 6, 1699;
elected a Ratemaker in May 1699; and a Viewer of Fences and Supervisor of Highways on Jun. 5, 1699.

Lincoln was first circulated by his political
opponents during his nomination for president in
1860. In Lincoln’s time a total of 16 individuals
were claimed to be his actual father. Among these
was Abraham Enloe. The Enloe claims have been
disproved by Edward Steers, Jr. Steers writes
“The legend that a man named Abraham Enloe
fathered a boy whose mother was named Nancy
Hanks may be true, but the woman clearly was
not the Nancy Hanks who married Thomas Lincoln
and the baby was not Abraham Lincoln who
became the 16th President.” Steers adds, “The
North Carolina tradition has no documentation
(primary records) of any sort, and fails when
challenged by all the existing documentation that
does exist. It is based exclusively on one man’s
writings decades after Lincoln’s death, and to
nothing more.”

King Philip's War. On 14 Apr 1665 he had
a license from the government of New
York which had jurisdiction at that time, to
purchase the island called No Man's Land,
500 acres in size, southwest of Martha's
Vineyard. He went before the Warden's
Court at New Shoreham, the town on
Block Island, on 13 Dec. 1681 and 31
August 1682 with Nathaniel Briggs, on
charges of stealing. He declared he was
of "very brittle memory," and, as Moriarty
put it, the case was settled.

Providence was founded in 1636. In 1730, the
Town of Providence was divided into four towns:
Providence, Smithfield, Scituate and Glocester.
Newport, Rhode Island, was founded in 1639.
Land was first granted to 47 people in place to
be called East Greenwich, RI on Oct. 31, 1677.
Many of these settlers to East Greenwich were
from the Newport area. Land in area of West
Greenwich first purchased June 30, 1709. The
Town of West Greenwich was set off from East
Greenwich and incorporated by the General
Assembly on April 6, 1741.
OUR FAMILIES’ MOVEMENTS
Our Rhode Island branches, the PHILLIPS and
related families in our line, migrated from England
during the Great Puritan Migration of the 1630s.
That was to the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
Eventually, these “Rhode Island ancestors”
became dissidents to the Massachusetts Bay
Colony’s religious doctrines. They went with
leaders such as Anne Hutchinson, Obadiah
Holmes and Roger Williams to Rhode Island. Our
specific line seems to have gone first to Newport.
Then north to East Greenwich and then to West
Greenwich. There they met with other branches
who had come to Providence from Massachusetts
Bay colony. After this many traveled to Pownal, VT
and Dutchess Co. New York, and eventually to
eastern Pennsylvania. This pattern of migration is
consistent with other families the PHILLIPS family
was long associated with, such as MOWRY,
INMAN, LATHAM, CLARKE, CRANDALL,
MATTESON, etc. and families in our line such
as WEST, AYLESWORTH, BURDICK, PIERCE
and HOLMES.

The mother of Nicholas de St. Lawrence (16) was Joan de
Beaufort Plantagenet (about 1433-1518). His father was
Gilbert (aka John) Talbot, Knight. So Nicholas was the first
to bear the name “de St. Lawrence.” Joan de Beaufort
Plantagenet, was daughter of Edmund de Beaufort
Plantagenet and Eleanor de Beauchamp. Her ancestors
included Ralph, Baron and Sire de Neville and Henry IV.
30
15
31
The name Barnwell is Norman-Irish and appears to
have been derived from “Berneval” (or Barneval or
Barneville) during the 11th century or much earlier.
During the 12th Century Sir Michael de Berneval or
Barneval was the first of the family who settled in
Ireland landing at Beerhaven in the county of Cork.
This was during the period of conquest of Ireland
by Strongbow, in the reign of Henry II. According to
records, Berneval landed in Beerhaven, Cork,
before Strongbow landed in Leinster. He is also
mentioned in the records of the Tower of London,
London, England as one of the chief captains of the
expedition to Ireland in 1172. Sir Michael was a
direct descendant to Alanus de Berneval, who was
a successful soldier and “Companion in Arms” to
the famous Norman Invader, William the Conqueror.
“In 1078 the Conqueror, having pursued the
insurgent Saxons to the Roman wall, returned to
York in triumph, and there bestowed upon Roger
de Barneville the manor of Newton in Cleveland,
and various other lands which his immediate
descendants possessed until the 14th century.”

ORIGIN OF THE NAME SPENCER
The patronymic Spencer it is said, had its origin in the
title of the office of "dispensator," so called in Latin and
"le dispenser" in Norman French, by historians and
antiquarians generally rendered Steward. This office
was attached to the Court or household of William the
Conqueror and was held by Robert who accompanied
the Conqueror in his invasion of England and hence he
was called in the Latin records, "Robert le dispensator."
So the name does not mean “of Spencer.”
