NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO
Like many little girls, I often dreamed of becoming a ballerina when I grew up.
I started taking ballet when I was about 11 at the Davis Arts Center in Davis,
CA, and I fell in love. After much hard work and years of grueling after-school
and weekend rehearsals, I eventually made it to the American Ballet Theatre
(ABT) School where I found that ABT’s style and approach to dance was very
comfortable for me and consistent with my training. For me, ABT would be my
ideal place to dance, if I could make that happen. Fortunately, a combination of
passion, dedication and the drive it takes to succeed in any artistic endeavor
helped me realize my dream, when ABT offered me an opportunity to dance with the company. I was
a member of ABT’s Corps de Ballet from 1984-1988, and what an experience it was! While it was
both demanding and exhilarating to be a member of ABT’s Corps, the opportunity to experience
performances by some of the greatest dancers, such as Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gelsey Kirkland,
made it all worthwhile.
Later, after an injury led me to pursue my college degree and a masters in arts administration, I
returned to ABT in a leadership capacity, serving as executive director and later CEO. While I now
had a different vantage point, I treasured the time I spent with the company in these roles, working
alongside some of our country’s most innovative choreographers and exceedingly talented dancers.
It is with much pride and delight that I now welcome ABT, “my” ballet company, as it returns to The
Music Center for what I know will be a weekend of incredible performances. We are so fortunate that the
company will perform a program choreographed entirely by ABT Artist in Residence Alexei Ratmansky,
including the west coast premiere of a new piece set to Leonard Bernstein's Serenade (after Plato's
Symposium). And, of course, we are excited to welcome home two L.A. natives and ABT Principal Dancers
Misty Copeland and Stella Abrera. Misty’s accomplishments are near and dear to our hearts since The
Music Center shares a part of her journey. As a young ballet dancer, Misty participated in The Music
Center’s Spotlight arts training and scholarship program in which she received one-on-one training from
distinguished teaching artists, the opportunity to dance on The Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion
stage in front of a live audience, and a cash award to pursue her artistic dreams.
I can think of no better way to conclude what has been a wonderful dance season at The Music Center.
We thank all of our supporters, notably Glorya Kaufman and Center Dance Arts, not only for helping
make this dance season possible, but also for helping to ensure that Glorya Kaufman Presents Dance
at The Music Center continues as the leading presenter of dance on the West Coast.
I look forward to welcoming you back to The Music Center this fall as we launch our 14th season of
Dance at The Music Center with Celebrate Forsythe on October 21, as three of America’s finest ballet
companies – Houston Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet and San Francisco Ballet – perform in one
program in a never-before-seen approach to salute one of America’s top choreographers, William
Forsythe. The upcoming dance season has many more wonderful performances. Be sure to join us!
I value your support and welcome your ideas.
Warmly,
Rachel Moore

SERENADE AFTER
PLATO’S SYMPOSIUM
FIREBIRD
lighting by Brad Fields
choreography by Alexei Ratmansky
staged by Nancy Raffa
music by Igor Stravinsky
scenery by Simon Pastukh
costumes by Galina Solovyeva
lighting by Brad Fields
projections designed by Wendall Harrington
This ballet is an abstract exploration
of some of the themes that Plato
investigated within his Symposium.
In Plato's original text, a group of
men convene and deliver speeches
on the topic of love, with each man
bringing a unique perspective to the
proceedings. They explore how love
can help the soul to understand truth
in the pursuit of wisdom and beauty.
SYNOPSIS
Searching for his lost love, Ivan finds himself
in a mysterious and ominous place. A flock of
firebirds descend. Ivan hides and watches
the mythical creatures in their nightly ritual.
He starts to chase one and captures her as
the rest scatter in fear. The captive Firebird
struggles to free herself and finally breaks
away, leaving him with a magical feather
which will summon her in times of danger.
Serenade after Plato’s Symposium was
given its World Premiere by
American Ballet Theatre on May 16,
2016 at The Metropolitan Opera
House, New York.
A group of maidens suddenly appears. Ivan
wonders if his love is among them but cannot
be sure as they are transformed under a spell.
He reveals himself to the maidens who seem
to resent his intrusion. Slowly, they accept his
presence. He is drawn to one particular
Maiden, and she too seems taken with him.
They come together but are interrupted by the
arrival of Kaschei, the evil sorcerer who
controls the maidens with his magical power.
As the group greets their master with blind
adoration, the Maiden attempts to hide Ivan
but is unsuccessful. Angered by Ivan’s
presence, Kaschei exerts his power and
initiates a deadly game. Ivan uses the feather
to summon the Firebird to his rescue.

INTERMISSION
The Firebird arrives and begins an infectious
dance, compelling everyone to participate
until they collapse from exhaustion. She lulls
the maidens to sleep, and she and Kaschei
struggle over the fates of Ivan and the
Maiden. In a trance, the Maiden is unable to
recognize Ivan as her true love and allows
herself to be seduced by Kaschei. Ivan feels
lost and betrayed, but the Firebird shows
him a way to break the spell. He shatters an
egg containing Kaschei’s soul and power,
killing him. Kaschei’s kingdom disintegrates,
and the maidens awake from his spell as
victims of his past curses are liberated, free
to reunite with their lost loves.

YOUR IMPACT
Proceeds from the Summer Soirée benefit The Music Center’s arts education, dance and community outreach
programs, including The Music Center’s Spotlight and Moves After Dark. These programs provide access and exposure
to the performing arts and make an impact on the lives of thousands of local students and families.
Recognizing that Misty Copeland participated in Spotlight, Summer Soirée outreach initiatives include hosting Spotlight
students at this special performance. In addition, The Music Center partnered with Boys and Girls Clubs and YMCA summer
camps to bring more than 1,000 children to experience an afternoon rehearsal of Firebird with an educational lecture.

That’s what dance is all about. As an
audience member, we hope that you are
inspired by our dance series and all of
our dance programs. But, did you know
that The Music Center brings students
to our theaters so that young audiences
can experience the same companies you
enjoy throughout the season?
We also bring dance directly into schools with
performances that highlight artistic traditions from
around the world—Spanish Flamenco, Irish Jigs,
traditional Korean Dance and Brazilian Capoeira to name
a few. It is our mission to inspire students with dance, give
students the opportunity to express themselves through
dance and encourage students to explore the possibilities
of dance.
This season alone we’ve reached nearly 35,000 students
through our dance outreach programs thanks to the
generosity of so many supporters!
STUDENTS REACHED DURING THE 2015/16 SCHOOL YEAR
• 30,000 students attended dance school assemblies as part
of our Music Center on Tour program
• 4,500 students attended Student Outreach Performances
of Hubbard Street 2, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre and
Complexions Contemporary Ballet
• Hundreds of students experienced one-of-a-kind training
through our master classes, giving young people the
opportunity to learn from renowned dancers from our
visiting dance companies
