NZ ACCORDION SPECIAL !
ACCORDITORIAL
Only a smattering of reports this week. Sure,it’s going to
take a week or two before we get into the swing of the
season but there’s not much footy in this issue and still
lots of space to fill. So, in another first for the Wrap - let’s
honour the accordion ! NZ style !
But wait. First, the ever reliable 6s have sent in a
report….
U6 Whites v U6 Blacks
report: Gerard Pignatelli
The much anticipated clash between the blacks and
whites took place on Saturday much to the delight of the
coaches and parents. After some hesitation from the
whites when asked to turn the jumpers inside out... It was a
‘real buzz’ to see the excitement on the kids faces when they realised they were actually opposing each
other.
From the word go the 2 teams were evenly matched with both teams scoring early tries in the first half. The
blacks defence was rock solid as always with Jaiden Marshall, Ben Pignatelli and Harry Greenberg stopping
many forward thrusts but the whites little rabbitoh recruit ‘Jack Willey’ managed to step his way around the
defence to score a couple of
impressive tries in the first half. The
support from Will Richards, Ethan
Epstein, Billy Nye, Ben Collison,
Cian Bligh, Rahul Ridling, Anthony
and Dominic Rutter was fantastic to
see. Great team work boys! For the
blacks the super speedy Will
Pickthall found the line as did the
always excited Max Rachel, look out
when Max gets a gallop up, while still
RAW he looks like a real
thoroughbred in the making! The
black’s team work was also on
display with the ‘dynamic duo’ of
Darby Willamson and Darcy Wood
teaming up to take control of the
centre pitch, running circles around
their oppsition. Freddie Fullerton
worked as hard as ever assisting all over the pitch.. At half time the score was all tied up at 3-3.
After some well earned oranges kindly supplied by the parents (thanks to Ian/Natalie Rachel + Jodi/Alan
Epstein) the boys continued to impress with the whites scoring 2 quick tries thanks to some sensational
moves from Billy ‘The Kid’ Nye and Ethan Epstein who both found the line. Just when it looked like the whites
would run away to a convincing win and with only minutes to spare the blacks hit back with some sensational
passing to score two quick tries and tie up the game 5-5..The BIG winners on the day were the spectators,
It’s truly amazing to see the improvement from all players in both teams after only 3 weeks .

WHAT’S
Before the arguments start, let’s find out what an accordion will cost.
This (obviously) is a Serenelli, made in Italy. Currently on NZ’s Trademe for
$NZ150.
Including the suitcase is a nice touch. You’d be able to fit a few belongings
in it if you were suddenly asked to leave your current address and when
empty, it could hold a few tossed pennies while you were on Auckland’s
Queen Street, busking. Or begging.
The current owner is in Fielding, Manawatu. He says he’s selling it for ‘a
friend’, although that is quite a usual tag line for these sorts of items.
You’ve got until Friday to place a bid but there hasn’t been any action so far.
So no rush.

NEW ZEALAND ACCORDION ASSOCIATION
The invention of the accordion can be blamed on the Chinese who cobbled
one together about 4000 years ago. The rest of the world was accordion free
until a pair made their way to Europe in the 1600s. Settling first in Italy, they
found very weak musical opposition at the time and soon overwhelmed native
instruments. Or was that Cane Toads? Anyway, they ‘re everywhere now ,
including New Zealand. The NZAA hosts the 2013 New Zealand National and
South Pacific International Accordion Championships and Festival on Queen's
Birthday Weekend.
So head to Auckland on the 2nd June.
U7 Greys v Clovelly
report: Kate ‘Pips’ Tibbetts
The weather cleared to a lovely morning at Nagle for the Under 7 Greys to come up against the much
talked about Clovelly team.
The players did a great job of listening to Huw’s directions on the field and all the boys tried really hard
to work as a team to score those tries – we even saw an amazing Wallaby style dive and slide at one
point towards the try line but he sadly slid about 2 inches short. Half Time was a little underwhelming
due to the absence of oranges (the fault of a very slack mother…lets leave her nameless(!)) but
regardless they managed to muster enough energy and play a strong second half.
Man of the Match was awarded to Gus and was very well deserved.

THE MOST EXPENSIVE ACCORDION IN THE WORLD
The Pigini Mythos. Made by hand and reputed to have perfect tone, for an accordion, the Pigini will set you back
over $40,000. The Pigini is what’s known as a ‘classical’ accordion
and its notes are arranged chromatically, unlike a standard
accordion which has its notes organised chaotically. On one drunken
night, famous classical composer Rostropovich mused ,
“If cellists want to discover all the possibilities of the
cello, they should play with accordion and not piano”
“
Just as a comparison, Keith Moon’s drum kit was sold by Christie’s in
London 2004 for over $252,000.
INTERESTING FACT
The only accordion Museum exhibition in the Southern
Hemisphere is in DARGAVILLE!
U8 Blacks v South Coogee White
report: Leigh McCleery
Word around was that Sth Coogee Whites were the team to beat this year & they certainly didn't .
Our boys knew many of the opposition from Oz Tag & Rugby League, making the tackling & clean outs all the
more fun. Even though we were up against an experienced team, the Blacks certainly made the opposition
work for their many tries. We never took a backward step during the game. An admirable performance for
young boys, especially when they were beaten convincingly
They gave their all till the final whistle, which as parents and coaches, is all we can ask for.
Us: Loads of Effort Them : Many Disappointingly
INTERESTING FACT
John Lennon learnt the accordion as a child, long before he
picked up the guitar. Imagine.
U9 Whites v Bays Green
report: Adrian Janschek
Parents often get uptight about their young boys’ memories. But being able to effortlessly forget things (like
their Dads) is actually a good thing in rugby, particularly when the last game was less than close.
Coming back from a well–earned school holiday break, armed with an arsenal of tackling and mauling
drills, the Whites didn’t just lift the bar early, they held it aloft, raising expectations of a thrilling encounter.
No sooner had the starting whistle set off Rocky III music inside the parents’ heads, little Robbie was over
for a try and it was game-on.
Bays replied immediately, but Robbie then added a further three tries to his tally, running from halfway
here, scooping on loose balls there, and then dancing everywhere to put Whites up 4-1.
Bays tried hard to turn the scoreboard around, but the White’s defence was superb, putting pressure on
Bays and snuffing out any promising raids. But as the half wore on, they managed to cross for a couple of
tries before a blistering run down the sideline by Riley enabled to Declan to leap across the stripe, followed
by a weaving run by Hugo to score.
A late try to Bays had the half-time score 6-4, and it was anyone’s game.
Bays narrowed the gap early in the 2nd half, but Declan took it back out to two tries before Orlando, the
man of the match who had defended resolutely through the first half, and would go on to make a couple of
try-savers in the 2nd, broke away to extend the lead.
Joshy almost reaped the rewards of a long run up the sideline, but was pushed out at the last minute. His
effort was indicative of all the forwards, who all made a super effort to lay a platform for the backs and
tighten up the middle of the park.
After a few late tries were swapped, and Whites were unlucky not to score more, the game finished at
10-6, which was indicative of the match, and a testament to the boys’ resilience and quick learning. A very
brave performance by the lads. See you all next weekend.

U10 Greys v Wests
report: Lisa Ranson
Week Three and lesson number Three - travelling to the away game. It can be a logistical nightmare to
arrange to reach Concord by 5.30 on a Friday afternoon, but the gods were smiling on us and Parramatta
Road played ball. Everyone arrived on time, albeit one player (Alex) sitting on the sidelines green and feverish.
Of course, with no reserves and watching his team from the sideline, he found the strength to run onto the field
very quickly.
It was a stunning night, clear and cool. The boys kicked off and before the referee could work out who was in
which black jersey, Dylan had reached the line and scored a try. This kid has the speediest legs, just a blur
when they get going. Dylan and Jack Harms managed to find the line 3 times each and Kyle also forced his
way over the line. Well done boys!
The opposition had a well deserved try in the second half which gave them a renewed gusto. The Greys kept
their cool and their defence line worked well to limit any further attack.
The Greys continue to grow as a team and learn. Again the smallest kid on the team, Jack Harms was the
MVP.

U10 Blacks v Burraneer
report: Susan Stoll
Two weeks of holidays and the promise of our boys defending their undefeated record for the season saw
Coogee U10 Blacks take to the field with enthusiasm against Burraneer. Dare we say the boys had a hunger
not seen before, there was not the “politeness” the team has been known for. The boys worked successfully
as a team, talking to each other. Iggy started the walkover with two try’s in a row, with his teammates
sprinting to follow. A quick break with our ever insightful coach talking about oxygen!! And moving the ball
forward. The blacks came back to do more damage to the confidence of the opposition leaving them unable
to make a try. Contributing to the tally were Tom, Will, William, Miller and Patrick. This of course couldn’t
have been accomplished without the rest of the team adding great back up and defence, there looks to be
nothing but growth in all the boys. Makes for exciting watching, well done to all.

ACCORDIONS ON NZ FILM
Even during the boom years, the NZ film industry didn’t
embrace the accordion as a viable prop. For a while, the
script ‘Once Were Accordionists’ was in development but it
was considered too violent for Kiwi tastes.
U11 Blacks v Burraneer Blues
report: Mack McGeechan
After a few weeks off for holidays, the Blacks were up against the well matched Buraneer Blues who always
provided a great forward battle combined with a well drilled back line. With Josh captain for the night it was
expected to always be a tight game. With injured player Ben (thumbs up) Smith cheering from the sideline
the boys marched onto the Latham battle ground.
The boys traded blows try for try throughout the game with some great wide ball feeding Boris into open
space being a highlight. Try of the match went to Luke Hennesey who ran 95 metres on his dodgy ankle to
lock the score with two minutes to go 33 all!!! Followed by ice... What determination!
Buraneer unfortunately weren't going away and managed a quick try in the dying minutes to thieve the win
40-33. The word from the coaches was "inconsistent"... The boys played some of their best and some of
their not so best in this game... If they can get the consistency right then watch out!!!

U14 Coogee v Mosman
report: Andrew Whatson
Finally some rugby after three weeks chomping at the bit......After a Round 2 forfeit from Burraneer the
boys have been waiting patiently to get back on the paddock. As we ventured again across the bridge to
the leafy suburbs of Balmoral to meet up against Mosman. These Mosmanites have been a dark horse with
trial form patchy and a forfeit against our neighbours from Clovelly we didn't really know what to expect.
With the opposition looking like they had a team sitting on the side line it was going to be a hard day for the
Coogee boys with only ONE reserve available (8 registered boys missing or injured). The first half was not
long when Mosman went over to take the lead. The game was one of those that was hard to get a gauge
on even when Liam Cornish and Johnie Mitsias had scored converted tries it felt that Coogee didn't have
the upper hand but could in the second half. With the halftime scoreline at 14-10 to the good guys (US) and
the wind up our clacker it was going to be interesting how the game would pan out. Well it didnt pan out
how we expected with Mosman coming out blazing and going over a couple of times to take the lead. The Coogee boys took some wrong options at times and with pressure from Mosman (who seemed to run on
fresh legs every stoppage??!!) they seemed to be a little put off their game. After a while the Coogee boys
took stock and with a smart backline movement which had Billy Ryan scooting down the left wing to score
a great wingers try. A quick sideline conversion from Ryley Angles-Corke and we had a 22-21 scoreline.
Again the boys came flying home and with the ball spun wide we still had time but another lost opportunity
and the referee blew time. Final scoreline Mosman 22 Coogee 21. The Sunday 14 A grade competition this
year seems stronger than last year and the boys need to be prepared for a grand final like game week in
week out.
