Perhaps you’ve captured a building from an unusual perspective, or maybe an exquisite architectural detail has caught your eye. Doors Open Days form Scotland’s contribution to European Heritage Days. This joint initiative between the Council of Europe and the European Union aims to give people a greater understanding of each other through sharing and exploring cultural heritage. 48 countries across Europe hold similar celebrations- involving over 20 million people. S he t lan d Doors Open Da y s 2012 Saturday and Sunday 5th and 6th September Historically Lerwick’s most important 19th Century building, a gift of Arthur Anderson to the community and opened in 1862. The former Anderson Institute now serves the School’s English Department and library. Visitors will be able to see the original chapel and an impressive collection of stuffed birds. Teas and coffees available with donations to the school fund. Entry is by the main door off Lover’s Loan Open: Saturday and Sunday, 12.00 – 16.00 2 BBC Radio Shetland Pitt Lane Lerwick Visit Shetland’s local BBC Radio Station. Situated in Pitt Lane the building houses the offices and recording studio of the teatime radio show ‘Good Evening Shetland.’ Your chance to get behind the scenes and learn more about the world of radio. Open: Saturday, 13.00 – 17.00 3 Coastguard Station Knab Road Lerwick A modern hill-top station which is the nerve-centre for Shetland’s Coastguard operations. Come and see how they protect our seas. Visitors should note that access may be denied in some operational circumstances. Open: Saturday and Sunday, 11.00 – 16.00 4 Sheriff Court County Buildings Lerwick Ever wondered what goes on inside the Sheriff Court? This Doors Open Days, come along, see inside the building, meet the players and see the court in action. After witnessing a mock trial you will get a tour around the grade B listed building and learn even more about the judicial system. Open: Saturday, tours from 10.00 (BOOKING ESSENTIAL) Swan- fishing boat Harbour Lerwick © www.austintaylorphotography.com Anderson High School, Lerwick 5 A Smack Rigged “Fifie” fishing boat originally launched in 1900, the Swan was purchased in 1991 by the Swan Trust and brought back to her original Shetland home. Since her re-launch the fully restored Swan has worked primarily as a sail training boat. The Swan will be berthed in Lerwick, near the Tolbooth for the open day, phone 07712557801 for further info. Open: Saturday & Sunday, 11.00 – 17.00 Award winning restoration of listed 18C former town jail, customs house and post office. Now with the original clock tower and stone steps reinstated. This striking pink harled building now houses one of Britain’s busiest lifeboat stations. Wheelchair access limited to ground floor only. Open: Saturday and Sunday, 10.00 – 16.00 This A listed, classical laird’s house was built in 1754 for Sir Andrew Mitchell of Westshore, the stone work, including that of the garden walls encompasses free stones torn from Scalloway Castle. Original wooden panelling still survives within the house. The house and grounds are at present in a state of disrepair so there may be work going on. Open: Sunday Tours from 11.00 (BOOKING ESSENTIAL) Isle of Vaila - Splendid house with island isolation. Fine 16th century Haa with parallel Georgian North wing added 1895, both linked by the grand baronial hall. Stunning period interiors and detailing; 19th century lookout tower, farmhouse, garden and contemporary shore base on mainland. Open: Sunday, tour at 10.00 (meet at shore station) (weather-dependent, 20 people max, pack lunch required, BOOKING ESSENTIAL) 11 7 Busta House Busta Brae Sumburgh Lighthouse Sumburgh Head Designed by Robert Stevenson, this was Shetland’s first lighthouse built in 1821 with additional buildings in the 19th century and 1905, perched atop the cliffs of Shetland’s most southerly point, on a vital yet dangerous shipping route. The light tower rises from a podium between two pedimented pavilions, stunning views and a wealth of seabirds. Open: Saturday and Sunday, 12.00 – 16.00 Easthouse Croft Duncansclate Burra Sand Haa Sand Vaila Hall Vaila Isle Tolbooth (RNLI Station) Lerwick 8 9 10 6 © www.austintaylorphotography.com 1 Star of the BBC’s Restoration programe, the listed Easthouse Croft is a now rare example of a crofting settlement with its various outbuildings and thatched roofs surviving. Recently restored as premises for the Burra History Group. Open: Sunday, 14.00 – 17.00 Country house (now hotel) dating from 1714 with additions in the late 18th century, 1980 and 1983. Parts of the original 18th century panelling surviving, matching the panelling in Haa of Sand and Gardie House. The outside grounds include a boat house, harbour and slipway, doocot and even Gargoyles brought to Busta from the House of Commons in the 18th century. Open: Sunday, 10.00 – 20.00 12 The Booth Hillswick Late 18th Century house with earlier adjoining böd, a scene of trade between Shetlanders and the Hanseatic fleet as long ago as 1684. More recently the building achieved fame as Shetland’s oldest pub. Now home to Da Bod Café and the Hillswick Wildlife Sanctuary for sick, injured and abandoned seals and otters. The café will be open. Donations to Sanctuary. Open: Saturday and Sunday, 11.00 – 18.00 13 Valhalla Brewery Baltasound Unst Britain’s most Northerly brewery is named after the home of the Norse gods where warriors were revived after drinking ale. There is a total of 6 different ales, from the first stage (mashing) to the last (packaging) you can learn how these different ales are produced. Tours for 20 people lasting half an hour Open: Saturday and Sunday, Tours from 14.00 (BOOKING ESSENTIAL) 14 Zero Carbon House Uyeasound Unst A “zero carbon” home, built on Britain’s most northerly island. Designed by Michael and Dorothy Rea, the house has become a test-bed for living “off-grid”. The couple generate their power from renewable sources, run an electric car, and intend to grow most of their food at home in hi-tech greenhouses using a hydroponic growing system. Open: Saturday, tours from 10.00 (BOOKING ESSENTIAL) 15 Lunna House Lunna Stunning hill-top Laird’s house with fine period interiors, detailing and views. The house is famed as the first base of The Shetland Bus, pivotal in the Norwegian Resistance. Memorabilia relating to the above, combined with fine interiors, detailing and vistas, will make this a memorable visit. Cream teas in aid of MacMillan Cancer Relief from 2pm. Open: Sunday, 13.00 – 17.00 (Cream teas from 14.00) 16 Midden Court Symbister House Whalsay Listed formal farm steading, comprising two interlocking U-plan single storey ranges enclosing a central courtyard. Contemporary with the adjacent Symbister House (now School). The North Range has been restored by Shetland Amenity Trust for the Whalsay History Group. Open: Saturday and Sunday, 14.00 – 17.00
