Once again we ask all organisers of events in Kemnay & District to give details for publication in the newsletter.
It is much better if events do not clash, for in a small community such as ours, these clashes can result in
divided loyalties and maybe a lower financial return for those who are raising funds for charity or their clubs
expenditure.
The Newsletter is produced by Kemnay & District Community Association for and by the people of
Kemnay. It is distributed each month to approximately 2250 homes in and around Kemnay. If you
would like anything included please note that the closing date for both articles and advertisements
is 9am on the 23rd of the month.
All inclusions to: Kemnay Newsletter, Kemnay Village Hall, 8 Aquithie Road, Kemnay AB51 5SS
(The letterbox for the Village Hall is located half way down the right hand side of the Hall).
Tel 01467 641120 (leave a message on answer phone)
or email your inclusion to: [email protected] or [email protected]
If you have any queries about delivery, please ring 01467 642167 or email

DEVELOPMENT OF THE VILLAGE, PART 12
CHURCH LANE
This lane is shown in Henderson's plan of the development of the village
in 1860 and was originally intended to run right down to Aquithie Road.
It provided a rear entrance for the properties fronting on to High Street,
thus giving access, away from the prying eyes of Victorian society, for the
lower class of citizen and also for the pony and all the trappings that went
along with that hierarchy. Oh yes! Ponies were certainly kept and the
stabling arrangements may still be seen at some of the properties. For
those more mature in the community, Sophia Adam of Greenfield used to
keep a cow.
Across the lane, leases were granted from 1889, the first being for the
present day Dunvegan (see February 2016). The plot adjacent to this was
leased to William McDonald, baker, and his spouse Mrs Annie Campbell
or Guthrie or McDonald in February 1890. William was the son of John
McDonald who started a bakery in what became the bar of the Gushet
Neuk bar, but he developed a skin disorder and had to give up the baking
trade. He became an insurance agent.

On the same day the adjacent plot (Dunniekeir Cottage) was leased to
William Alexander Diack, who was termed as a mason in Kemnay:
Despite the fact that he was a mason, he was also tenant farmer at
Pictillum Farm and in February 1890 (the same day as he leased the land
for Dunniekeir Cottage) he leased land at Pictillum and erected the house
known as Essie Cottage. During his tenancy at Pictillum he built a new
farmhouse (1895) and also replaced parts of the steading.
The plot of land at the top of the lane was leased to Allan Bruce,
carpenter, Kemnay and his wife Christina Cran Low on 17th February
1890. Bruce obtained a mortgage of £50 from Aberdeen Property
Investment Building Society (which he paid off in 1904) and proceeded to
build the property known as Nithsdale.
It will be remembered that Allan Bruce was one of the group of people
who moved from Old Deer to work at the quarries and who all left their
mark on the village. In March 1899 he leased the plot of land across
Church Lane from the Free Church and built the Clifton (Kinkellian) for
his own use. Sadly, Allan died quite suddenly on 13th November 1915
while out canvassing for Lord Derby's Scheme, this was an attempt to
increase recruitment for WW1 and avoid the need for conscription by
allowing men to voluntarily attest for service at a later date.

Fundraising Dart’s Event - Past & Future
CHRISTIAN AID UPDATE
First results for our Christian Aid fundraising are as follows:
The estimate for the JOG/WALK is £3244.
Look out for a full report later.
Graham Watson held a fundraising darts exhibition in aid of the
flood victims of Inverurie Kemnay and Kintore. He is absolutely
delighted to be able to say that all monies are in and a magnificent
sum of £15,150 has been handed over to the Inverurie Round
Table to distribute to the flood victims. Graham would like to thank
everyone for supporting the event.
As it was such a success he has teamed up with Sandy Elrick to
bring Ross Montgomery back to Kemnay for another exhibition at
Kemnay Bowling Club on Saturday 23rd July
1st Kemnay Rainbows meet every Monday and at
the moment we have a full complement of 18 girls.
This term we are busy getting out and about to enjoy the lovely spring
weather. We have been to Kemnay House for a nature hunt and up to
Alford to the Tubing at the Dry Ski Slope which was enjoyed by everyone,
including the leaders and some parents. Earlier in the term we made
pancakes and really enjoyed eating them - far better than Tesco ones!
We are also managing to fit in some craft too.
to raise funds for Defibrillators for Kemnay Village and
Gordon Dementia Services.
Tickets are £10 each and can be ordered from Graham on
07999213599 or Sandy on 07980173906.
The main sponsors of the event are Bliss Cleaning Services and
Kirkstyle Garage Kemnay.
In June we are inviting Dads along for an evening of fun and adventure
where a little friendly competition will be expected. We are also joining
with Rainbows, Brownies and Guides from Kemnay and Kinellar to
celebrate the Queen's 90th Birthday with a Garden Party at Kemnay
House. The term will be finished with a barbeque for the girls.
4 of our Rainbows recently took part in the County Outdoor Shield at
Haughton Park where they were Superheroes for the day. Unfortunately
we were not in the winning but enjoyed the experience.
Last term the Rainbows kept their Promise to be kind and helpful by
raising £117 by doing good deeds to raise money for the Flood Relief
Fund.
We are always on the lookout for new members and helpers so if you this
is a group you could get involved with, please go to
www.girlguiding.org.uk/interested to register your interest.

Friday Morning Coffee Shop
The Coffee Shop will be open every Friday during June and we will have
a special session on June 10th “A Spa Day” with Kelly. There will be a
small charge for the materials used. Sounds interesting!
We also plan to be open throughout the summer apart from 15th and 22nd
July when we will be closed.
However to enable us to do all of this we are looking for some more
volunteers. No experience is required, just a friendly face and a
willingness to help.
School holidays will mean that there will be school children around in
July and August so any suggestions and help for suitable activities would
be most welcome.
KEMNAY BARGAIN BOX
We sell good quality goods on Fridays from 9.30 to 11.30am in the
Wainman Room of the Village Hall (side entrance).
Please drop off items at the Bargain Box or call in to make other
arrangements.
Due to new recycling regulations from
Aberdeenshire Council which effect what can
and cannot be put in the outside bin at Kemnay
Village Hall, we need to be very careful of the
items we can accept as donations.
If you are unsure please contact us on a Friday
morning in the Wainman Room.
Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

Kemnay Community Bee Group - June Meetings
10.30am on Sunday 5th June
7pm on Thursday 16th June
At the Apiary Site, Kemnay
Kemnay Community Bee Group was established in 2014 to enable local
people aspiring to keep honeybees to learn and refine the mystical art of
beekeeping from more established beekeepers.
Founder members have set up a small demonstration apiary where
novice beekeepers can gain hands on experience. A series of
training/practical sessions takes place in the summer on the 1st Sunday
of the month at 10.30am (weather permitting) and the 3rd Thursday of
the month at 7pm at the Apiary Site. Anyone interested in honeybees
and beekeeping is welcome to attend. There will be a small charge of £2
to cover refreshments.
The Group has recently set up a website with information about bees
and beekeeping and also details of meetings and workshops which may
be of interest.

Earth Hour
On 19th March Family and friends took part in Earth Hour,
when those who want to get involved were asked to think of
the earth for one hour and turn off your non essential lights
from 8.30 to 9.30pm. Earth Hour has been going since 2007
where it started in Sydney Australia, it now has grown to
172 countries taking part and an example of this was lights
on public buildings are turned off for this hour.
Those with primary school children might have them coming
back from school with information about Earth Hour, ours
did and I thought this was a great idea. So we decided to,
invite friends around over that hour and have a party. We
did not want to use any electricity over the time, switching it
off at the mains and lighting a fire and relying on candles for
our light. We also decided not to allow the use of batteries,
so no tablets or phones.
We turned off the electricity at 7.30, at first the children
found it funny not having wi fi, having to actually entertain
themselves and interact with each other. We had warned
our children, they had come up with a game that didn’t need
a lot of light. They came up with a descriptive game, then
music instruments came out and lots of talking went on.
We did not turn the electricity back on until 10.30, it was
great to see the children enjoying the novelty of having an
electricity free evening and having fun. My daughter who is
14, opted to come to the party against going to a sleepover
and said that she really enjoyed the evening and much
preferred doing the Earth Hour over the sleepover.
Yes I would do this again, I would recommend others to do
the same and it would be great to see the whole village get
involved. Next year I hope the community council will get
involved and see if the street lights could be turned off for
the hour.
