Gift Giving
The Community Gift Giving is
an annual project organised by
Jesus Is Lord Church Victoria.
This is a great opportunity to
serve the Laverton community.
There were free activities for
the children. The Fairy Floss,
Jumping castle and face
painting brought smiles to our
local kids. They also gave away
toys and clothes for the
families. 200 hampers were
distributed and free health
screening test was performed
by medical professionals.
Thank you to all the businesses,
organisations and individuals
who donated money towards
this project.
Fun and laughter from the children at the gift giving
Christmas Lunch at the Hub
Laverton Community Integrated Services Inc
(LCIS), supported by The Laverton Hub and
local churches, put on a traditional Christmas
Day Lunch.
We have been told that the food was delicious
and there was plenty of it. The Turkey and
Ham with vegetables was cooked to
perfection.
After the main meal there was plum
pudding and/or Cheesecake for desert,
with a choice of fresh cream or yoghurt. Yum, what more could a person ask for!
Each person present received an
unexpected gift from Santa, who arrived
on a Fire Truck, however the person I
was talking to informed me that she did
decline the customary kiss from Santa.

2014 Carols in Laverton
This event was well attended by
the community and Councillors
alike (see photos below)
We were entertained by a variety
of local performers, which
included the Hobsons Bay Band
and the Laverton Choir. Even
Colleen was persuaded to have a
sing along.

BBQ for the community and of
course, you can’t have a
Christmas celebration without
Santa! Who delighted the kids.

2014 Laverton Festival
Once again the sun shone on the Festival Day and the locals flocked to the
event. The local stage acts kept the crowd entertained and the rides
attracted the children. Santa’s arrival was greeted with squeals of delight.
The Bendigo Bank handed out gifts. The Scouts had their usual sausage
sizzle and many more groups provide food and goods to buy. It was a good
place to pick up that special gift for Christmas.

wonderful Christmas and New Year with
many reconnections with families and
friends, even if it was only by card.
This is the start of our 36th Year. This paper is
put together and delivered by residents of the
Laverton area all working voluntary. Some
have been with us since the start in 1979.
Most don't miss a delivery and if away or in
hospital they often make arrangements for a
friend to cover for them. We are very lucky
and privileged to have such a loyal band of
volunteers, but as happens most months

The Community Garden in Bladin St has
become very productive with the
enthusiastic new members. They hold plant
& veggie swaps on the first Sat of each
month. These are becoming very popular
also. Our Mayor Cr. Colleen Gates attended
the one in Feb and was very pleased to see
the progress. In case you were not aware the
garden had to be moved from the rear of the
school to the front when the school
expansion happened and it has taken a while
to get it back up and running.

The Revd Chris Lancaster was
commissioned as Priest in Charge of
the Anglican parish of St Eanswythe's
Altona and St Clement's
Laverton/Altona Meadows on
Wednesday, 11 February 2015, filling
the vacancy created by the retirement
of The Ven. Liam Matthews.
A packed church of locals with support
from Chris's former parish of Brighton,
and many supporting clergy, shared in
welcoming Chris, his wife Anna, and
baby Gemma and in the formalities of
commissioning him in the manner of
the Anglican Church, led by the Rt.
Rev. Philip Huggins, Regional Bishop
of North and West Melbourne. Bishop
Huggins is noted for his warmth, and
for his strong support of humanitarian
causes. Baby Gemma clearly already
knows her name – each time she was
mentioned she answered with a hearty
roar!
The supper which followed was
enjoyable, and all in all a pleasant
occasion.
Fr Chris grew up in Canberra,
completing his music studies in
Newcastle, with two years there as
O r g a n S c h o l a r. A f t e r w o r k i n g
overseas for some years in youth

in Great Britain and Asia he returned
to Australia to study for the ministry at
Trinity College [Melbourne] leading to
placements as Assistant Curate at
Sorrento and Rye, and St Andrew's
Brighton.
He married Anna in 2010; Gemma
arrived in August 2013.
Fr Chris is a keen supporter of
ecumenical partnerships. He is
presently Secretary-Treasurer of the
Australian Academy of Liturgy.
We welcome this pleasant family

The Hon Robert Clark MP,
Attorney-General, under the
current Government's law reform
agenda, has introduced a new Bill
into Parliament, which is hoped to
become law in the near future.
This will give much greater
security for people who lose the
capacity to look after their own
affairs and will ensure, that
person/s appointed to act for and
on their behalf, are much more
accountable for their actions. If
the person so appointed does not
act in the best interests of the
person they represent, it may
result in imprisonment for up to 5
years, with substantial fines or
both.
The new Powers of Attorney Bill
2014 consolidates legislative
provisions for powers of attorney
and embraces supportive decision
making.
On 24 June 2014 the Powers of
Attorney Bill 2014 was introduced
in the Legislative Assembly. If
enacted, it would consolidate
legislative provisions for powers of
attorney, which currently fall within
the Instruments Act 1958, and
enduring powers of guardianship,
currently covered by the
Guardianship and Administration
Act 1986. The proposed Act
comprehensively covers the scope,
making and revocation of:

attorney

· supportive attorney
appointments
It does not cover the appointment of
an agent for the purposes of making
medical treatment decisions. This
remains covered by section 5A of
the Medical Treatment Act 1988. It

will occur in the same way that any
non-enduring power of attorney
would be revoked under the
proposed Act.
While much of the proposed Act is a
consolidation of existing
legislation, the inclusion of
'supportive attorney' appointments
is a new development. Recognising
that some people require support in
making decisions, the proposed Act
would allow a person to appoint a
'supportive attorney' who is able to
assist their decision making, by
accessing or obtaining information,
communicating information or a
supported decision, or giving effect
to supported decisions. The
'supportive attorney' is not a
substitute decision maker - they
would not make decisions on behalf
of the person they are supporting and they cannot be a care worker,
health provider or accommodation
provider for the person.
The Bill also details more robust
enforcement mechanisms, which

News from
Cr Carl Marsich
In this month's message I thought we could
go on a journey to see what's scheduled for
the coming months. Let's start at Pipeline
Reserve in Seabrook. You can now walk
along the 2.5 metre wide concrete path,
running along the south side of the reserve.
The only works that remain involve joining
the path up to the three courts. We're
currently replacing the fencing around the
access paths to these courts and once this is
complete, the extra few metres of path will
be constructed.
Now, let's go across the freeway and turn
right onto Railway Avenue. The remaining
sugar gums (Eucalyptus cladocalyx)
between Donald and Grace Streets,
earmarked for removal due to old age, are
coming out late March. They will be
replaced in the autumn planting season by
lightwoods (Acacia implexa), more suited
to the location. We are also in the process of
revitalising the busy precinct from High
Street to Grace Street with extensive
planting of new street trees on both sides.
Improvements to this strip will include a
full upgrade of the pedestrian area of the
shopping strip near Donald Street with new
paving, furniture, trees and garden bed
planting, expected to begin in June.
Crossing the railway line, we get to Lohse
Street Reserve which will receive a
makeover between now and May. The
play equipment will remain and it will
be accompanied by improved street
lighting, new toilets and a sensory
garden. The trunk of one of the sugar
gums mentioned earlier will cross the
tracks and find itself a new home in the
reserve as a climbing log.
The tender for construction of the A B
Shaw Reserve playspace went out
recently and construction should start by
April.
Finally, if we turn left onto Central
Avenue and head east we get to the
Altona Meadows Skate Park at H D
Graham Reserve. The concept plan for
the new junior skate park went out for
public consultation last month and
construction should begin in April.
And here our journey ends: from
Seabrook to the skate park. Which
reminds me – there's a big event taking
place at Altona Meadows Skate Park on
21 March. It's Summer Sounds meets
the skate series. Heat three of the Skate,
BMX and Scooter series will be taking
place on the ramps, while next door
there's Summer Sounds entertainment
courtesy of food vans and DJs.

of the Multicultural Advisory Committe,
delegate on the Hobsons Bay Community
Fund, and proxy delegate on the
Association of Bayside Municipalities,
Laverton Community Association, and
Metropolitan Waste and Resource Group.

Dear Resident
For a Prime Minister who promised
he would help families with the cost of
living, Tony Abbott's first Budget was
a cruel one for Australian families.
It is also clear that low and middle
income families will bear the brunt of
his cuts.
Not only are they going to have their
Family Tax Benefits cut but they are
also going to pay for new taxes every
time they take their sick child to see
the doctor or fill up the car at the
petrol pump.
Before the last election Tony Abbott
made a promise to families that
there would be no cuts to health, no
cuts to education and no new taxes.
However,
it is families that will now

pay for his broken promises.
For instance, a typical family

single income of $65,000 and two
school aged children will be up to
$6,000 worse off each year.
That's around 10 per cent of their
entire family budget gone.

The children’s centre has returned for 2015! Our early
childhood
educators
have
been
transforming and upgrading the play
spaces. The yard rejuvenation project is in
full swing with vegetable gardens and tree
planning soon to commence to provide
children with sustainable and adventurous learning
environments. How cool to sit in the shade of a tree!
The children’s centre offers a variety of educational
programs for children aged 0 - 5 years including Alternative
Care, Kindergarten and Long Day Care. We encourage

back at school it feels like summer is well
and truly over, but there are some
fantastic local events scheduled and I
hope you get a chance to go along.
It is forecast to be a month of warmer
temperatures, so I do want to share some
quick tips about staying healthy in the
heat.
Extreme heat is a real health risk for our
community, so please keep an eye out for
each other, especially your elderly
neighbours and friends.
Make sure your family is drinking lots of
water and stay indoors. Young children in
particular need lots of protection from the
heat, as their body temperatures rise
quickly and they are at more risk of
d e h y d r a t i o n .

Cohealth, a leading provider of

in and around Melbourne's northern and
western suburbs, is set to open services
in the purpose built clinic here at the
Laverton Community Hub late April.
According to cohealth's Director of
Clinical Services, Jane Canaway, the
new Cohealth clinic will have GPs,
counselling, and a range of other
specialist health professionals.
“We are very excited to be setting up this
clinic at the Laverton Hub. The services
at the clinic will develop over time in
response to the needs of the local
community”.

Points to Ponder
Why are we Waiting? Just a couple of
questions!
Does anyone else find it frustrating to wait at
the Aircraft level crossing while the train is
still at Williams Landing?
I know of a local resident who was feeling
extremely ill and was being taken to Werribee
Hospital. this person was having an allergic
reaction (we now believe to antibiotics) and
was having trouble breathing and was
extremely red, amongst other symptoms.
They had to wait for the train to arrive at
Aircraft and then leave before they could
cross the railway line. In this instance it didnt
end badly, but what about the next time?
Another issue is the buses which travel, or in
this case do not travel, from Bladin Street to
Aircraft Shopping Centre. Again, it is
difficult for a person who has limited
mobility and does not drive to get to the
doctors surgery or any of the shops in that
precinct. In fact, it is extremely difficult to
get to Central Square! If you were to look up
the PTV directions you would be advised to
catch a bus to Laverton station, then catch a
train to Westona and then catch a bus back to
Altona Meadows! When will things become
easier for those of us who do not drive

Doesn't time fly, as I sit here typing for
this the March addition I realise just
how quick the year is going. In the
Laverton Response Zone which
covers the Laverton, Altona Meadow
and Seabrook we are still plagued by
people who break into our Cars and
Houses. This is a Regional priority
and as such we will be conducting
operations both overt and covert in
order to attack these two particular
crime themes. I am asking you to be
extra vigilant in the coming weeks and
months.
Please focus on simple
preventative measures like locking up,
not leaving items of value in plain
sight and reporting suspicious
behaviour if you see it or know who's
doing it. This will help to make our
community safer place to live, simply

Cats and Crystals!
Cats are quite prone to crystals in
the bladder. There are several
types of crystals that can form, but
by far the most common is
struvite, which is made up of
magnesium, ammonium, and
phosphate.
A certain amount of these are
found in urine and can be
considered normal, but when
there is an excessive amount,
they can cause irritation of the
bladder, or urethra (the passage
from the bladder to the outside) or,
in male cats, they can block up the
urethra at the tip of the penis so
the poor cat cannot urinate at all.
This becomes an emergency.
The signs of a cat with an inflamed
bladder are usually a cat that may
appear restless, anxious, and
constantly trying to urinate, and
only passing a small amount. The
urine may be bloodstained. They
will often urinate in more obvious
places almost as if trying to get
your attention.
When a cats bladder is blocked,
the early symptoms can be very
similar. A male cat will usually be
licking at his penis excessively.
With time the cat becomes more
uncomfortable, and distressed or
painful. Eventually the black
pressure on the kidneys leads to
electrolytes abnormalities in the
blood, which can affect among
other things the heart, so that
severely affected cats are an
increased anaesthetic risk. If left
untreated and the cat cannot pass
any urine, it will die.
The treatment of a blocked
bladder is to unblock the urethra,
insert a catheter, and empty the
bladder, and flush out as many
crystals as possible. Usually the
catheter is left in for a few days
with the cat on a drip to flush out
the urinalysis tract as much as
possible. A common complication
if the bladder has been very
stretched, is that the bladder loses

although it is no longer blocked, it
may need to be manually
expressed for days, often
complicated by a swollen urethra.
Female cats rarely block, as their
urethra doesn't have the narrow
tip.
The causes can be multifactorial.
Cats can form quite concentrated
urine that encourages crystal
formation. Bacterial infection,
which may be obvious, or
chronic, low grade. Stress
seems to play a part - cats in
multi-cat households seem to
have a higher incidence.
Control is by diet - in the short
term, moist foods only, to keep
the urine dilute. There are many
brands of prescription diets to
reduce crystals, in both canned
and dry. Once a cat has had an
episode of urolithiasis (crystals in
the bladder) we consider them as
a permanent increased risk, and
would keep them on a crystal
preventing diet long term,
possibly forever.
