summary
W
ith manufacturing becoming ever more advanced, ceramic materials are more and
more often turned to as the material of choice, and this was more than evident at the
world-first Ceramics Expo USA held in Cleveland April 28 through 30.
Over 170 exhibitors participated in the first show, 40% more than originally anticipated,
with over 20% of the exhibitors coming from outside the USA. 2,117 professionals from the
technical ceramics industry attended the free three-day event, which included an expansive
exhibit hall, presentations, product launches, keynote speakers, panel discussions and
workshops, and more.
Among the manufacturing giants in attendance were Boeing, Apple, Ford and Honda. Also
in attendance were professionals from NASA’s Glenn Research Center; several schools
of ceramics affiliated with major universities in the USA, including Case Western Reserve
University in Cleveland; industry scientists, researchers and more.
A two-track conference program featuring over 50 expert speakers from NASA, Morgan,
Federal-Mogul Powertrain, Boeing, Corning, GE Aviation and more discussed critical issues
impacting advanced ceramics, composites and glass manufacturing and applications.
This report documents the pre-show marketing campaign in the run-up to the launch of the
expo and conference in April 2015.
“This is an excellent show. I’ve been able to
meet with buyers and customers to learn about
new applications and directions we can go in.
It’s a great place to bring everyone together”
Tony Finoli, Senior Research Engineer,
McDanel Advanced Ceramic Technologies

Ceramics Expo Cleveland rocks advanced
materials
and glasses. Expert viewpoints will be
shared through a combination of panel
discussions, case studies and keynote
presentations.
Conference topics in both tracks
will primarily focus on four themes:
transportation, energy, sustainability,
and specialty ceramic and glass manufacturing. In the transportation arena,
manufacturers are seeing the advantages
of using advanced ceramic materials to
respond to consumer demands and regulations that require increased energy
efficiency. Key topics in this theme will
cover engine materials, ceramic brakes,
sensors and more.
Similar types of ceramic materials
are also used in the generation, storage
and delivery of energy. Energy-intensive
industries are turning to ceramics and
additive manufacturing processes to
achieve stricter emissions targets, reduce
energy and maintenance costs, and
improve sustainability. Topics relating
to the specialty ceramic and glass theme
will feature growing industries that use
advanced ceramics and glasses, such as
mobile communications and biomedical
materials.

M
anufacturing is a major industry in the Midwest, and Ohio is nationally recognized as a burgeoning center of science and industry. Consequently, it makes sense to host the inaugural Ceramics Expo tradeshow for professionals involved with the ceramic manufacturing supply chain in Cleveland, Ohio. From April 28-30, industry leaders, technical directors,
buyers and executives will experience the debut of Ceramics Expo, which will be
held at Cleveland’s I-X Center and is free to attend.
Exhibition and Networking
The new show will feature a comprehensive exhibition for industry professionals to
connect with other experts, source customized solutions, and learn about the most
recent technologies. The exhibition will showcase technical products and services
from a range of industries, including aerospace, automotive, energy, medical, military and many others. The exhibition floor will be open during the day Tuesday
through Thursday.

Ceramics are
Everywhere
I
was talking to someone who is quite new to the industry the other day. During
the course of our conversation, she said, “Ceramics are really kind of everywhere, aren’t they?” Yes, they are! From the bowls we use to eat our morning cereal and the windows that keep us warm within our homes, to our cell
phones, cars and computers—not to mention planes and even spacecraft—the products produced in this industry touch every part of our lives.
Attendees to the inaugural Ceramics Expo event, which will be held this month in
Cleveland, will have the opportunity to see a vast array of the industry’s technological
achievements. I spoke recently with Adam Moore, the event director, regarding what
we can expect to see during the free-to-attend technical sessions and exhibition. You
can listen to our conversation at www.ceramicindustry.com/pods. Be sure to also read
Adam’s article entitled “Ceramics Expo Explores the Next Dimension” on pp. 12-15
in this issue for a sneak peek regarding additive manufacturing technologies that will
be represented at the show.
One area of our lives that we’re probably not terribly enthusiastic about is dentistry. No one likes going to the dentist, but ceramics can provide results that make the
trip worthwhile. “Ceramics are ideal candidates to replace damaged dentition due to
their hardness, biocompatability and appearance,” writes 3M’s Geoffrey Morris in this
issue. “This challenging application requires strong, inert materials that can be fabricated with the desired anatomy and coloration, resulting in restorations that appear
natural.” Turn to pp. 20-22 to learn more.
Will you be attending Ceramics Expo? Please don’t hesitate to contact me at (248)
786-1704 or [email protected] to schedule a time to talk about your company
and its technologies. I hope to see you there!

ust a few years ago, “robot-based 3D printing” would have been something
you would encounter only in a work of science fiction. Now it’s a fact of everyday business in the additive manufacturing industry—and one of the areas of
focus of the inaugural Ceramics Expo and Conference, which will take place
April 28-30 in Cleveland, Ohio (see Exhibitor List and Floor Plan on pp. 14-15).
Exhibitor Preview
One of the conference exhibitors will be Viridis3D, a Woburn, Mass.-based company
that does not run its own service bureau. As Will Shambley, the company’s president
and CEO, explains, that means it does not print parts as a service to others. “Our
biggest ceramics customers over the past couple years have been a pair of bureaus—
Figulo Corp. (recently acquired by 3DS) and Eagle Engineered Solutions,” he says.
“Figulo served many of the online shops making glazed 3D-printed ceramics for sale
to end consumers. Eagle provides a similar service, but the focus is on the investment
casting market.
“We anticipate that both of these
sectors will continue to grow, both in
the U.S. and abroad. I think that supply,
demand, and awareness will increase,
as new machines enter the market, new
materials are released, and the experience of the service providers increase.
There’s still a lot of people who haven’t
heard of Ponoko, Shapeways or
Sculpteo. The word about those entities
will continue to spread, especially as
product quality improves and lead times
drop under two weeks.”
The luxury and biomedical industries are driving growth at 3DCeram,
a Limoges, France-based exhibitor that
launched its CERAMAKER last year.
Both industries have “very high expectations in terms of quality products,”
says Richard Gaignon, publication
director.
The company helps its customers to
use ceramic applications of 3D technology: it provides training and maintains
a hotline to optimize use of the CERAMAKER process line. As the market
continues to grow rapidly, one of the
company’s challenges is how, as a small
business, to develop a worldwide customer base.
Another European exhibitor is
Vienna, Austria-based Lithoz GmbH.
The company is working closely with
the powder injection molding industry, which requires complex parts in
small quantities. “This is still the major
foundation for our success,” says CEO
Monika Homa. “We have also started
to look into new applications, and two

Ceramics Manufacturing Thriving in Cleveland
Ceramics Expo prepares to fuel growth of the ceramics manufacturing supply chain
Cleveland, Ohio February 4, 2015 - Over 2,000 advanced ceramics industry leaders and
manufacturers, technicians, scientists and developers – along with buyers, executives and other
corporate decision makers worldwide – will come together in Cleveland, Ohio April 28-30, 2015
at the first US Ceramics Expo. The event is organized by Smarter Shows in Brighton, UK, on
behalf of the expo’s founding partner, the American Ceramic Society in Columbus, Ohio.
According to the Freedonia Group, an international market research firm based in Cleveland,
demand for advanced ceramics manufacturing will grow 6% in the USA this year, with many
factors driving that growth: increased motor vehicle and electrical equipment manufacturing, as
well as changing technologies in the environmental, medical, aerospace and energy markets.
Furthermore, Cleveland+ Business/Team NEO predicts that by 2020, manufacturing in
Cleveland will increase 40%, surpassing the national rate and creating an optimum environment
for the fast-growing ceramics industry.
Holding the expo in Cleveland is a natural fit for the industry because of the city’s strong
manufacturing presence, especially in polymers and materials, said Adam Moore, Event Director
with Smarter Shows. “The ceramics industry in North America is set for huge growth as the range
and depth of applications for advanced ceramic and glass materials increases. Ceramics Expo will
be a catalyst for that growth, and the uptake in booth space from some of the biggest players in
the industry is testament to that.”
Ohio ranks fifth in the top manufacturing states (Industry Week) with more than 400 of the
state’s companies serving the polymer and materials industries. Northeast Ohio is home to 10
polymer and materials world headquarters and operations, including Saint-Gobain, a leader in
advanced ceramics, and an exhibitor at Ceramics Expo.
There is an increased commitment among top executives to return manufacturing to the USA
from China, as indicated in a survey conducted by the Boston Consulting Group in 2013 and
reported on ceramicindustry.com, citing 54% considering reshoring of production back to the
USA – and 21% already doing so.
The Ceramics Expo trade show will connect ceramics makers and users in a wide range of
applications that serve modern life and technology today, including transportation, automotive,
aerospace, oil and gas, biomedical and medical devices, instruments and electronics, military,
environmental, household and more.

Industry Debut in Cleveland, OH at Ceramics Expo 2015
Innovative tool expected to take ceramics manufacturing to faster and more profitable heights!
Cleveland, Ohio March 20, 2015 - Two industry leaders making a unique mark in ceramics
manufacturing joined with experts in engineering design and development of automated
machinery to develop and manufacture the revolutionary new ceramics cutting/grinding tool,
iMachining for Ceramics.
An international leader in integrated computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), SolidCAM of
Newton, PA, together with G.W. Schultz Tool of Tavares, FL – recognized as an innovator in
vertically integrated design and highly engineered custom, standard and modified carbide cutting
tools – will jointly debut the tool. The exclusive launch of iMachining for Ceramics will be at
the Ceramics Expo 2015 in Cleveland, Ohio April 28-30, 2015. This one-of-a-kind technology
will be presented at the international expo and is expected to take ceramics manufacturing by
storm, with high utilization anticipated in the aerospace and aviation, automotive, electronics and

The effect of this state-of-the-art technology is expected to be felt immediately throughout the
global ceramics industry, said SolidCAM Founder and CEO, Dr Emil Somekh. “iMachining
for Ceramics will have a significant impact on the ceramics industry worldwide. This tool
offers ceramics cutters volumetric material machining removal rates never seen before, while
maintaining optimal structural integrity and geometric accuracy,” he stated. Simply put, Somekh
added, the ceramics iMachining tool works on “first cut”, with increased efficiencies that result in
reduced cycle time, longer tool life and significant cost savings.
SolidCAM and G.W. Schultz Tool partnered with Blurry Customs of Hendersonville, TN,
in creating this innovative product that will significantly enhance a growing and vital ceramics
manufacturing and production environment. All three partners will be present at the tool’s
worldwide unveiling during the Ceramics Expo at Cleveland’s International Exposition Center;
SolidCAM is also an expo sponsor. Each partner brought unique and specific expertise to the
production process. SolidCAM developed the CAM software to enable cutting of fully sintered
ceramics with the efficiencies and attributes stated above. G.W. Schultz Tool created and
manufactured the custom, high-performance ceramic cutting and grinding tool for the product.
Blurry Customs designed the first customized application-specific computer numerical control
(CNC) machine to be used for ceramics cutting.
The excitement surrounding this new technology is sure to be front and center of the Ceramics

Ceramics Expo Hails Midwest Manufacturing Renaissance
as Destination Cleveland unveils $3.3m Economic Impact
from Inaugural Show Week
Organizers’ expect show to double in size as momentum grows for 2nd annual Ceramics Expo in
Cleveland April 26 - 28 2016
Manufacturing relies heavily on technical ceramic materials. From steel and glass for architecture
to semiconductors, jet engines, teeth and prosthetic limbs, the application areas are virtually
endless. With manufacturing becoming ever more advanced, ceramic materials are more and
more often turned to as the materials of choice, and this was more than evidenced at the worldfirst Ceramics Expo USA held in Cleveland April 28 through 30.
Manufacturing giants in industries highly dependent on the technical ceramics industry were in
attendance, including Boeing, Apple, Ford and Honda. Also in attendance were professionals
from NASA’s Glenn Research Center; several schools of ceramics affiliated with major
universities in the USA, including Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland; industry
scientists, researchers and more.
2,117 professionals from the technical ceramics industry attended the free three-day event, which
included an expansive exhibit hall, presentations, product launches, keynote speakers, panel
discussions and workshops, and more.

171 exhibitors participated in the first show, 40% more than originally anticipated, with over 20%
of the exhibitors coming from outside the USA. In addition, there were 1,368 total room nights
at a value of $168,602 at five hotels near the Cleveland I-X Center where the expo was held.
There’s a formula to the economic impact such events can have on their host cities, and
according to information provided by Destination Cleveland, the economic impact of the 2015
Ceramics Expo on the city of Cleveland was $3,304,657. This figure calculates the influx of
business dollars into Cleveland’s economy, and was arrived at using the standard Destination
Marketing Association International Event Impact Calculator, which takes into account
the number of attendees and hotel nights used, and per diem attendee spending across the
destination, among other factors.
By the close of the 2015 Ceramics Expo, the excitement and appetite for this event was palpable.
‘Ceramics Expo Turns Hype into Reality,’ reported Ceramic Tech Today, with one of the show’s
feature exhibitors, SolidCAM, commenting, “I’ve been attending trade shows since 1997, and this
has been absolutely one of the best trade shows I’ve EVER been to.”
“This show has been outstanding,” said Mark Mecklenborg, Director of Membership, Meetings
and Technical Publications with the American Ceramic Society, founding partner of the expo.
“People are happy. The industry has come out in great numbers. It has been busy and the
exhibitors here have been extremely happy with the traffic they have gotten and the quality of the
people that have come around. It really is a great representation of the ceramic and glass industry,
not only in the United States but throughout the world,” he said.
Event Director Adam Moore said, “We had high hopes for the first show, but this has enabled
us to accelerate our plans for Ceramics Expo. We may well be able to accomplish our five-year
plan in three years as we aim to make this the most important exhibition for the ceramic industry
worldwide.”
The 2016 Ceramics Expo will be held in Cleveland April 26-28, 2016.
