River Lighthouse on Umpqua Lighthouse
Loop near Winchester Bay. This is a
prime spot for observing whales passing
by during spring and winter migrations.
Lakeside is the gateway to beautiful Tenmile Lakes, among the largest
lakes on the coast. The easygoing town
extends from the highway to the lakes
and is an ideal location for recreation,
relaxation, and retirement. Services
available in town include a lodge, motels,
RV parks, marinas, restaurants, a market,
and on Hwy 101 a gas station, mini-mart,
deli plus espresso and sweets nearby.
Every July, Lakeside presents a festival,
car show, and spectacular fireworks display on South Tenmile Lake; the third
weekend in August the town hosts the
annual Drag Boat Races.
Lakeside was a resort favored by
Hollywood stars in the 1930s. Tenmile
Lake and North Tenmile Lake both touch
the town, with narrow arms snaking inland
for miles. Tenmile Lake County Park features a picnic area, swimming/wading area,
boat ramps, and 45 new RV sites.

center for art galleries, shops, and great
dining places. More great dining is along
Beach Loop Drive. The chamber office
and visitor information center are at
the entrance to Old Town in the little
red building (bandon.com). Bandon
is known as the Cranberry Capital of
Oregon, and the annual Cranberry
Festival in September brings many people
to town. The Sprague Theatre is the
venue for live theater productions.

Ill-fated Lakeport, a community born
from the belief that Floras Lake could be
a major shipping point for Oregon Coast
products, disappeared after the discovery
that the lake could have ocean access
only through expensive locks that would
have drained the lake. Today there is
access to a boat launch and the lake is
popular with windsurfers. Boice–Cope
County Park has camping sites.

Small, friendly, and quirky, Port
Orford feels a lot like California’s Big
Sur 20 years ago with its awe-inspiring
panoramic vistas and active artistic community that supports eight galleries. Port
Orford was established in 1851 and is the
oldest town on the South Coast. Today
Port Orford is the northern gateway to
America’s Wild Rivers Coast. The area
is a haven for the outdoors enthusiast:
scuba dive in the ocean, windsurf the
coves of Floras Lake, hike and fly fish the
Elk and Sixes rivers. The dock here is
the only open-water port on the Oregon
Coast and is one of six “dolly” ports in
the world where recreational and commercial fishing boats are hoisted into and
out of the water daily. This town of 1200
offers lodging at state and RV parks and
motels and dining at a variety of cafes.
Port Orford Heads State Park’s historic
Lifeboat Station museum is open to the
public, and visitor information is provided at Battle Rock Park.
Take a scenic walk on the Port Orford
Wetland Interpretive Walkway, located
near 17th and Idaho Streets. This boardwalk has several viewing platforms to see
wood ducks and hooded mergansers.

Famous for its fishing, the Rogue

extending from Lobster Creek, about

Jet boats travel upstream and rafts head

located near Agness. Most fishing is
done within the lower 10 miles. I.L.
Patterson Memorial Bridge was the
first in the country to be built with
prestressed concrete in 1931. With its
seven arches of reinforced concrete, this

339.7 - Pistol River to Carpenterville Road
Start here for a driving adventure on
a paved road that runs roughly parallel to
Hwy 101 and rejoins it north of Brookings
at milepost 354.7. Not advisable for RVs.
343–353 - Samuel H. Boardman SSC
Boardman is a long, narrow park
consisting of about 12 miles of rugged
coastline and pocket beaches. Several
viewpoint waysides have picnic tables.
The principal ones are 344.6 Arch Rock
Point, 346.0 Thunder Rock Cove,
346.1 Natural Bridges Cove, 347.5
North Island Trail, 348.5 Indian Sands
Trail, 349.3 Whalehead Trail, 351.3
House Rock, 351.9 Cape Ferrelo, 352.6
Lone Ranch, and 353.8 Rainbow Rock.
The beach at Thunder Rock Cove
is considered one of the best of the sheltered beaches on the coast. Look for wild
goats. The portion of the Oregon Coast
Trail that runs through Curry County
begins at Cape Ferrelo and ends at
Humbug Mountain State Park.
347.9 - Thomas Creek Bridge
The highest bridge in Oregon, built
in 1964, crosses 345 feet above creek bottom. To appreciate the structure’s magnitude, pull into the parking area at the
bridge’s south end. Follow a short trail
west for the best look at the gigantic geometric steel legs supporting the bridge.

This is a paved back-road adventure
that loops back to milepost 339.7.
355.6 - Harris Beach SRA
Named for George Harris, a pioneer
from Scotland who raised sheep and cattle here. Just offshore is the largest island
along the Oregon Coast, Bird Island,
where breeding takes place for a variety
of birds, including tufted puffins. 
357.0 - Brookings–Harbor
(ZIP 97415)
Brookings–Harbor is located on
America’s Wild Rivers Coast and basks
in weather patterns that foster some of
the warmest temperatures on the coast.
Considered the gateway to the Oregon
Coast and recreation on the Chetco River,
Brookings is a center for commercial flower
growing and tourism and has become home
to a growing number of retirees. The city
celebrates its annual Azalea Festival on
Memorial Day weekend.
357.0 - Central Mall
The Oregon and California Lumber
Company (O&C) ran Brookings as a
company town in the early part of the
20th century. The Central Building,
constructed in 1915 by O&C, is listed on
the National Register of Historic Places.
A small museum of local history is in the
basement. 

The Chetco River divides Brookings
from its unincorporated neighbor Harbor.
The North Bank Road goes up the Chetco
River to nearby Azalea Park and 8 miles
farther to Alfred A. Loeb State Park. The
state park is near a trail through a redwood
grove. On the south side, South Bank Road
leads inland to Salmon Run Golf Course.
The 18-hole course was constructed to
preserve the environment as much as possible. A meandering stream has numerous
bridges and is the biggest hazard for golfers.
Salmon actually do inhabit the golf course.
Lower Harbor Road reaches the Port of
Brookings–Harbor. Port facilities include
a marina, port-operated RV park, a boardwalk, and shops. The chamber of commerce building is well marked and offers
advice and brochures for visitors.
360.7 - Chetco Valley Museum
The museum is home to the state’s
largest Monterey cypress, which was
planted in the 1850s. Open mid-April
through October, Thursdays through
Sundays (541-469-6657).
363.0 - Winchuck Ponds/Peavine Rd
Five miles past Chetco River bridge,
turn east on Winchuck River Road and
continue 1.5 miles to graveled Peavine

At 1-mile point, park at pullout to see
freshwater wetlands that harbor marsh
birds and ducks.

SMITH RIVER
From the historic town of Smith
River, with its miles of lily fields, to the
Klamath area with its majestic redwoods,
Del Norte County has only one sizable
town: Crescent City, located on a tongue
of land that juts into the ocean.
The town is the gateway to the Smith
River National Recreation Area, famous
for its redwoods and its miles of scenic rivers. Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park
along Hwy 199 and Del Norte Coast
Redwoods State Park along Hwy 101
between Crescent City and the Klamath
area also create awesome scenic corridors.
While driving along the Del Norte
coast, notice the tidal lagoons, favorites of
fishermen and birders. And you can’t miss
the incomparable Trees of Mystery that has
been attracting sightseers since the 1940s.

is worth a stop. The nearby Smith River
Scenic Byway provides a glimpse into
one of the largest Wild and Scenic River

St. George’s Reef Lighthouse lies 6
miles off Point St. George at the northeast
corner of Crescent City. A scenic drive
extends along the oceanfront all the way
into the city. The namesake Crescent
Beach extends in a broad crescent to the
south.
A tsunami struck Crescent City after
the great Alaska earthquake of 1964 and
destroyed the business district. Evidence of
it can still be seen.
Visit the Historical Society Museum
from May through September, with its
Tolowa and Yurok Indian artifacts and
original lens from the St. George Reef
Lighthouse, and the Marine Mammal
Center, one of three rescue and rehabilitation centers in California. Del Norte
