Stephen Thompson Small, friendly, and quirky, Port Orford feels a lot like California’s Big Sur 20 years ago with its awe-inspiring panoramic vistas and active artistic community that supports eight galleries. Port Orford was established in 1851 and is the oldest town on the South Coast. Today Port Orford is the northern gateway to America’s Wild Rivers Coast. The area is a haven for the outdoors enthusiast: scuba dive in the ocean, windsurf the coves of Floras Lake, hike and fly fish the Elk and Sixes rivers. The dock here is the only open-water port on the Oregon Coast and is one of six “dolly” ports in the world where recreational and commercial fishing boats are hoisted into and out of the water daily. This town of 1200 offers lodging at state and RV parks and motels and dining at a variety of cafes. Port Orford Heads State Park’s historic Lifeboat Station museum is open to the public, and visitor information is provided at Battle Rock Park. Take a scenic walk on the Port Orford Wetland Interpretive Walkway, located near 17th and Idaho Streets.
