Regulations and Standards for Head Protection
Types of Hard Hats
Type I/1 – Conventional hard hats that
are designed to reduce the force of
impact to the top of the head, neck
and spine.
Head/Face
Type II/2 – New designs that offer additional impact protection to the front,
sides, and back, as well as the top of
the head.
Information
Classes of Hard Hats
Class E (electrical) are tested to withstand 20,000 volts.
Class G (general) helmets are tested
at 2200 volts.
Class C (conductive) provides no
electrical protection.
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.135 requires
head protection if any aspect of the
work environment presents a risk of
head injury.
ANSI Z89.1-2003 developed requirements for industrial head protection
relating to 1) Impact Protection; 2)
Penetration Protection and 3) Electrical Insulation Protection.

This fifth revision of the standard
provides performance and testing
requirements for industrial helmets,
commonly known as hard hats, and is
a revision of ANSI Z89.1-1997, which
established the types and classes of
protective helmets, depending on the
type of hazard encountered. The 1997
version included specifications for helmets designed to offer protection from
lateral impact, or top-only impact, giving employers and users the flexibility
to specify the helmet that best meets
the needs of their specific workplace.
Industrial head protective helmets
meeting the requirements of the 2003
standard are classified as Type I for
top protection or Type II for top and
lateral impact protection. Both types
are tested for impact attenuation and
penetration resistance. Type II helmet
performance requirements include
criteria for impact energy attenuation
from impacts from the front, back and
sides, as well as the top, off-center
penetration resistance and chin strap
retention. The three classes indicate
the helmet’s electrical insulation rating, and is unchanged from 1997.
WARNING
Hard hats are designed to provide
limited protection to the head by reducing the force of falling objects
striking the top of the hard hat shell.
While limited protection is provided in
other parts of the shell, this hard hat
was not designed to provide front,
side or rear impact protection. Avoid
contact with electrical wires. NEVER
ALTER OR MODIFY THE SHELL OR
SUSPENSION SYSTEM. ALWAYS USE
BULLARD REPLACEMENT PARTS.
Inspect your hard hat shell and suspension regularly. Check for cracks,
frayed straps and any signs of damage before each use. Replace the
hard hat immediately if you notice
any signs of wear, damage, abuse
or environmental degradation. If the
hard hat has sustained a forcible blow
(impact), dispose of it immediately,
even if damage is not visible. Failure
to follow these warnings could result
in death or serious injury.
CAN/CSA Z94.1-2005 National
Standard for Canada
This is the fifth edition of CSA Z94.1,
Industrial Protective Headwear - Performance, selection, care and use.
It supersedes the previous editions
published in 1992, 1977 and 1966
under the title Industrial Protective
Headwear. It also supersedes the Preliminary Standard, published in 1965,
and replaces the protective headwear
requirements specified in CSA Z941948, Code for Head and Eye Protection.

Model F-300 is for light duty, general purpose face protection. Exceptionally lightweight and
comfortable. Fits easily over today’s spectacles with space for air circulation to prevent fogging. Accommodates a 4118 standard size (11-1/2” x 8”) window. Model F-400 has a deep
crown protector and wider windows for extended face protection. Deeper 4” crown protector
extends protection without increasing weight. Incorporates wide-vision (17” x 8”) wraparound
windows and screens which provide 40% more protective area than standard size faceshields.
Fits easily over required spectacles or respirators. Available with choice of three protective cap
mounting mechanisms. High Performance protective faceshields can be equipped with model

B. Cap Peak Mounted Faceshields
Lightweight, dielectric faceshield protective cap mounting bracket mounts on the front peak
of the cap. Dual channel mounting system uses one channel to anchor the bracket to the cap
while the other channel holds the window so it can lock into the work position and pivot up
and out of the way when not needed. The locked channels form a positive seal to keep debris
from filtering between the cap and faceshield. Molded from strong, heat-resistant Noryl, ideal
for extended outdoor use.

These Universal Foldback Faceshield Frames are designed to fit on any of MSA’s protective
hats. When properly positioned, they will securely hold faceshields, visors and welding shields.
A durable ring of rubber tubing holds the plastic adapters securely on the hat while a metal
spring holds the metal brackets in place. The plastic adapters are non-conducting, and can be
