FOUNDATION MISSION STATEMENT
The GSF Foundation’s mission is to improve the
quality of life of children and families in need in the areas where
GSF associates live and work through personal involvement
and contributions.
MESSAGE FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
It’s hard to believe that it’s been eight years since we started the GSF
Foundation. From an idealistic dream to a thriving reality, this special Foundation
has brought so many good-hearted people together to help thousands of
children in need each year. From our GSF associates who drive the Foundation,
to our supportive customers, supplier partners, business associates, charity
partners, friends and family, together, we really have been able to “improve the
quality of life of children and families in need in the areas where our associates
live and work” throughout the U.S.
Thanks to your support, this improvement came through a number of
multifaceted efforts such as: providing food, clothing, shelter and the basic
necessities of life to kids who would otherwise go without; offering relief and
support to children and women who have been abused or neglected; supplying
medical and health solutions to those in need; serving meals to families of
hospitalized children and maintaining the nearby houses where they stay
during treatment; providing educational and cultural opportunities along with
school supplies to disadvantaged kids; and supporting programs for children
with disabilities.
These numerous, ongoing efforts were made possible through the personal
involvement of thousands of GSF associates, who not only donate financially to
the Foundation, but who personally volunteer to spend time with the children
whenever possible. Last year, these selfless volunteers helped run dozens of
camps and programs for the disabled, like Special Olympics, Make-A-Wish and
Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times. They served hundreds of meals and
provided activities at local Ronald McDonald Houses, soup kitchens and
hospitals. They supported local food banks like Second Harvest and San Antonio
Food Bank. They personally delivered thousands of pairs of shoes, clothes,
coats, and more than 5,000 backpacks and school supplies to needy kids through
programs like Shoes That Fit and Operation Warm. They organized fundraisers
such as golf tournaments, galas, runs, rides and raffles. They also held regular
Foundation committee meetings and served in other charitable
leadership positions throughout the community.

In 2009, approximately 75% of GSF’s associates participated in the Foundation in
some form. The Foundation grew to 21 local committees throughout the U.S.,
which help determine how the organization’s money and time is spent and with
whom it partners. Thanks to your partnership, the Foundation raised more than
$3.1 million last year. From its launch in 2002 through 2009, the Foundation has
raised more than $12.6 million to help those in need.
Though the Foundation has made substantial progress since its inception, we still
have a long way to go. Unfortunately, the needs are greater than ever, but we
can continue to meet those needs with your support. We are blessed to have so
many generous community partners who help us bless the lives of others. We
work diligently to effectively leverage our funds and use them judiciously.
We are proud to say that because of the Foundation’s unique volunteer structure
and support from Golden State Foods, 100% of donated funds go directly to
those in need.
The GSF Creed states that “only by working together can the ultimate success of
all partners be assured.” And thanks to your valued partnership in the GSF
Foundation, we can assure you that 2009 was indeed, a heartfelt success.

In 2009, GSF associates organized hundreds of volunteer service activities
throughout the U.S., hosted dozens of effective fundraisers, and conducted local,
regional and national board and committee meetings on a regular basis. They

welcomed new committees in Kent and Spokane Washington and held
leadership training sessions for new committee members. Some were
recognized for their exceptional leadership, such as Portland, Ore., which
received the RMHC award for their contributions and support to the House. And
as the economy continued to be sluggish, the 2009 annual associate campaign
drew record support from GSF employees. Many associates doubled their gifts
and recommitted their volunteer efforts.

CORPORATE GIVING
In 2009, Golden State Foods, Corp., donated nearly a million dollars to charitable causes such as the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, Big Brothers/Big
Sisters, the Ronald McDonald House Charities as well as the GSF Foundation. The corporation covers 100% of all operation expenses for the Foundation. This
enables 100% of donations to go directly to those in need. Since the mid-1970s, GSF has donated tens of millions of dollars to help their communities.
