Note that there will be pointers indicating the different destinations during the workshop. 4 How to reach us From Airports From Chhatrapati Shivaji Interanational OR Domestic Airport - 60-120 mins by taxi Airport terminals are located at Sahar, east of the suburb of Andheri. It takes about 60-120 minutes (depending on rush hour) by road to reach TIFR. Transport facilities from airports: Pre-paid taxis One is Mumbai's famous "black and yellow" cab and other is "Cool cab". There is a counter just inside the arrival hall. Specify your destination as 'Navy Nagar'. The rates are posted prominently behind the counter. You will be given a receipt for your payment. Retain this till the end of your ride; then hand it over to the taxi driver. At the exit from the airport, the police may want to look at this slip. There are radio cabs also available in the airport premises. You will have to book the cab before exiting the airport building. The cost will be about Rs. 700-800/- from International airport and less than that from the domestic airport. This service is by tariff meter. Meter taxis These are private AC-cooled luxury meter taxis like Meru Taxis (022-4422-4422), Mega Cabs (022-4242-4242) or Easy Cabs (022-4343-4343). There is a free phone counter inside the arrival hall to book these cabs. Once you reach Navy Nagar, it is easy to find TIFR. It lies at the far end of Homi Bhabha Road (one of Navy Nagar's principal roads), beyond the Navy Nagar bus terminus, on the left side. Most passersby on the street will know where it is, but remember that it is commonly referred to as 'TIFR' rather than 'Tata Institute'. From Railway Stations From Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) - 20-30 mins by taxi Taxis are available from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. Alternatively, buses (routes 3, 6 Ltd, 136) come to Navy Nagar from outside the local station at CST. TIFR is on the same road as the Navy Nagar bus terminus, which is where you should get off. From Mumbai Central - 30-45 mins by taxi Taxis are available from the ranks outside the station. Alternatively, you could cross over to the local station and board a Churchgate bound local. You have to buy a separate ticket for the local train. From Churchgate - 15-30 mins by taxi Taxis are available from outside Churchgate. Alternately, a bus (route 137) comes from Churchgate to the Navy Nagar terminus, down the road from TIFR. An alternative mode to reaching from CST and Churchgate Railway stations is to take free TIFR bus service. The bus follows a circular route first reaching CST and then Churchgate station. Cab booking from TIFR reception Cabs from TIFR can be booked directly from TIFR reception at the number: +91-22-2278-3636. 5 Rooms for the conference All the main talks will be held at the Lecture Theatre AG-66 (ground floor). Parallel sessions in the evening will be held simultaneously at AG-66, AG-69 and AG-80 (all in ground floor). The Colloquium will be held at AG-66. If participants want to hold additional group discussions, they can book the room A-269 (2nd floor, DAA seminar room) from the Helpdesk in advance, on an hourly basis. If any participant wants some place to sit and work, he/she can do so in the West Canteen Lounge (anytime during the workshop), or in AG-80 (except during parallel sessions). Workshop WiFi will be available in these places. The history of this cosmopolitan city dates back to the 16th century, when Vasco da Gama, a Portuguese explorer christened the city Bom Baia, denoting ‘Good Bay’. The Portuguese ruler gifted this group of seven islands to Charles II of England, who subsequently leased these to the East India Company in the 18th century. The British made the city their headquarters for trading and renamed it as Bombay. This era saw the development of monuments, offices, railways and the famous Bombay Stock Exchange came into existence. The British ruled India for over 200 years, finally setting sail for Europe on 15th August, 1947; and the Government of India made Bombay the capital of Maharashtra. The 19th and early 20th century, saw an increase in small scale craftsmanship and very soon Bombay became famous for its flourishing textile industry. With the event of modernization, in the 21st century, railways, airports, malls, banquet halls, theatres all wove their way into Bombay, now popularly known as Mumbai. 11 Mumbai is currently the most populour city in India, home to people of diverse religious and cultural backgrounds. The latest historic additions are the ‘Bandra Worli Sea-link’ and the ‘Eastern Freeway’ which stretches 16.8km long, linking the Northern suburbs to the island city. The city is renowned for its unique, one of a kind ‘Queen’s necklace’ that dots the city’s skyline at night; besides several historic landmarks such as the ‘Gateway of India’, ‘Prince of Wales Museum’, ‘Chowpatty’, ‘Hanging Gardens’ and ‘Juhu beach’. The incredible city of Mumbai is a true melting pot, bringing together people from all parts of the country, as well as from the subcontinent and expatriate communities from across the world. It is the city that never sleeps, and the entertainment and financial hub of the county. In Mumbai one sees the many faceted aspects of India- the cultural diversity, the heritage precincts, the abiding love-affair with food, the passion for festivals and cricket in equal measure, bazaars and markets spanning from the largest flea market to the swish malls, skyscrapers and slums sitting cheek by jowl. Come and explore Mumbai’s madness in its truest hues!! We have listed some suggestions below for a 2-3 day trip. 13 AJANTA AND ELLORA CAVES: Located near Aurangabad in Maharashtra are designated as World Heritage sites and have Buddhist and Hindu rock paintings that date as far back as the 2nd Century B.C. These caves are a must see and are carved into the side of a cliff. The elaborate architectural carving and murals in these caves represent an era of Indian history that is best preserved and represented at these sites. Ways to reach Ajanta/Ellora: A slower but probably more interesting way to get to these sites involves a luxury rail journey with the Indian railways: http://www.indiarailtours.com/ajanta-ellora-tour.html Alternatively, a flight to Aurangabad from Mumbai and then transfer by car to the cave sites. SEASIDE RESORTS NEAR MUMBAI: ALIBAUG, MANDWA AND MURUD JANJIRA Just a 45 minute ferry ride away from the Gateway of India in Mumbai are the sleepy, fishing villages of Mandwa, Alibaug and Murud Janjira. Recently these have also been invaded by harried city folk seeking a break from the fastpaced life of hustling and bustling Mumbai. Murud Janjira is a fort located on an island off the coast of Murud. These locations would be ideal for an overnight or 2-3 day trip. Below are links for Ferry information and possible locations to book a stay. It is pretty easy to go to the Gateway of India and book a ferry seat right at location on the PNP Catamarans. Ferry Time Tables: http://alibagtourism.com/ferry-time-table Suggested place to stay: Ccaza Commodore: A lovely little Bungalow rented out by Commodore Nitin Mongia. The speciality of this place is the exceptional food from Mongia’s catering company. A perfect base to explore the Raigad district and the sleepy fishing villages of the Konkan Coast. A car with driver can be rented out by contacting Commodore Mongia. http://www.ccazaccomodore.com Mango resorts: Boutique hotels/homestays near the Kihim beach and Alibaug beach. http://www.mangoalibaug.com Radisson Spa at Alibaug: A Spa experience par excellence http://radisson.hotelgroup.in/radisson-blu-resort-alibaug.html 14 Tropicana resorts: A Boutique hotel with rooms and villa bookings. http://www.alibaugbeachresort.com/tropicanahotel/tariffs.html. KHANDALA/LONAVALA: A two hour drive from Mumbai are the hill stations of Khandala and Lonavala. From here one can explore the beauty of the Sahyadri Mountain range and also hop over to Pune, the Cultural capital of Maharashtra, for a tour of its oldfashioned streets, markets and homes (wadas). Suggested place to stay: Machan- a luxury eco-resort with tree houses that gives you a live experience of the rich canopy of the Sahyadri. It is located in a biological hotspot, Jambuline, a 2.5 hour drive from Mumbai. It also serves as an excellent base from which to trek to the forts that nestle atop the glorious Sahyadri peaks and represent the history of the Maratha rulers of the state. 15 GOA: The state of Goa is a tourist paradise with its unique history, scenic beauty, beaches and architectural splendors. It can be reached by a short 45 min flight from Mumbai. http://www.goa-tourism.com MAHABALESHWAR: It is Maharashtra’s most popular hill station with soaring peaks and breath-taking valleys. A short drive from the town brings you to the beautiful Venna lake and Panchgani hills. http://www.tripadvisor.in/Tourism-g635749-Mahabaleshwar_Maharashtra-Vacations.html. 16
