TRANSFORMING
EDUCATION
There’s no doubt that Georgia’s educational system
needs a positive dose of transformation. Roughly,
only half of those that start high school, graduate.
In this session we’ll explore disruptive innovations in
the classroom, and ask questions like “why school?”
and “why doesn’t school look more like real life?”
and “what skills are we really teaching our students?”
After hearing from stellar experts in education, we’ll
turn inward, allowing local leaders in education to
respond to the challenges, and talk about how we as
a region can truly transform education.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
SIR KEN ROBINSON
Author, Speaker, Advisor in Education Transformation
Sir Ken Robinson, PhD is an internationally recognized leader in the
development of education, creativity and innovation. He speaks to audiences throughout the world on the creative challenges facing business
and education in the new global economies. The videos of his famous

NOTES
WILL RICHARDSON
Co-founder, Modern Learner Media; Author of Why School?
Mr. Richardson – a veteran public school educator of 22 years – is an outspoken advocate for change in schools and classrooms in the context of the
diverse new learning opportunities that the Web and other technologies now
offer. He has authored four books, most recently Why School? How Education
Must Change When Learning and Information are Everywhere.
ROBERT AVOSSA
Superintendent of Fulton County Public Schools
Dr. Avossa established the Learning Communities model for Fulton County
Schools. Organized geographically — Northwest, Northeast, Central and
South — the four learning communities allow a decentralized approach to
school management and provide schools the opportunity to work more
closely together and align resources. He also has been successful in driving
the school system forward in its quest for charter system status, which was
granted by the Georgia Department of Education in 2012.
ALVETTA THOMAS
President, Atlanta Technical College
Understanding that workforce training is critical in today’s business environment, Dr. Thomas has made great strides in increasing the number of highly-qualified, work-ready graduates in the city. Under her leadership, the college
has achieved a 98 percent job placement rate, an increase in college enrollment
of more than 40 percent, and the development of the Atlanta Technical College
Institute for Males, which was designed to increase the recruitment, retention,
and graduation rates of African-American males.
MICHAEL THURMOND
Superintendent of DeKalb County School District
Mr. Thurmond earned his JD from the University of South Carolina School
of Law. In 1986, he became the first African-American elected to the Georgia
General Assembly from Clarke County since Reconstruction. Mr. Thurmond
has served as a motivational speaker to state school board associations in
nine Southern states on issues regarding leadership, diversity and public
education advocacy in the 21st century. His latest book, Freedom: Georgia’s
Antislavery Heritage, 1733-1865, was awarded the Georgia Historical Society’s Lilla Hawes Award.

ALLIANCE THEATRE
In today’s fluid driven economy, people in
fields like technology, design, architecture,
marketing, arts and entertainment can
help make a city more innovative and
competitive. Some call these people the
Creative Class. Others call them creators
and innovators. We simply like to call them
talented. And one of the biggest questions
facing Atlanta’s future is how do we attract
and retain more talented people?

In order to thrive in the global economy, cities and
regions must attract and retain talent from outside
their usual walls. This requires investments in
infrastructure, quality of life, transportation (beyond

ages. In this session, we’ll explore the future of
cities, from retrofitting suburbia to what attracts the
Millennial generation, to the ideal transportation plan
and structure. We’ll also sit with local developers and
ask how their plans help attract talent.

LOCAL INNOVATORS
Atlanta has all the makings for a successful
world class innovation hub, right here
in our own backyard. For example, the
Advanced Technology Development
Center (ATDC) located at Georgia
Tech is considered one of the top 10
incubators in the world. Atlanta is home
to thousands of entrepreneurs, yet we still
condemn failure instead of supporting risktaking. How do we change our culture to
celebrate a “try, fail, try again” approach?

ORGANIZING SPONSOR
LEADERSHIP ATLANTA STAFF
LEADERSHIP ATLANTA’S MISSION:
It is the mission of Leadership Atlanta to build a
better community for everyone in the Atlanta region
through education about the key issues facing the
region and inspiring members and others to take on
and exercise real leadership committed to serving
the common good. More on our mission.
LEADERSHIP ATLANTA’S HISTORY:
Celebrating 44 years of developing leaders,
Leadership Atlanta operates the oldest sustained
community program of its type in the country.
Leadership Atlanta was built upon this conviction:
the early selection, nurturing and training of leaders
was too important to be left to chance. The founders
envisioned an organization that would serve as a
training ground and a conduit through which people
could pass and make a difference in how Atlanta
worked. The model leveraged one of Atlanta’s
strongest assets — the tradition of cooperation
among its businesses, community organizations and
public officials.
54
Today, through both its Leadership Atlanta and
LEAD Atlanta programs, the organization continues
that proud tradition of connecting and inspiring
leaders to strengthen Metro Atlanta’s communities.
The organization’s influence is apparent throughout
the region, as its programs have helped educate
and connect many of Metro Atlanta’s top CEO’s,
educators, judges, elected officials, entrepreneurs,
community organizers and nonprofit leaders. More
information on the history of Leadership Atlanta.
WHY (CO)LAB?
As a result of its strategic review process, Leadership
Atlanta adopted an initiative that would expand
its reach beyond its alumni network and current
program participants and engage the broader
community in conversations on how to create a
better Atlanta. That initiative became known as
(co)lab, which is designed to foster collaboration,
connections and community amongst Atlantans
and generate innovative ideas on how to solve our
region’s problems and maximize its potential as well.
